Honestly, not being immediately booted into NG+ after beating the final boss of the main game is my favorite QOL improvement. I missed most of the Artorias of the Abyss content on my first playthrough of DS1 for that reason.
Another thing that’s pretty huge is how Dark Souls 2 introduced the 70% equip load breakpoint. Been used in every game since besides Bloodborne obviously.
Ng+ adding new enemies is definitely an interesting concept as well. On top of that, ng+ bosses rewarding different souls for even better weapons and spells was cool. New game plus actually feels like it adds more content instead of just replaying the game with your old equipment.
Now that you mention it, the Bonfire Ascetic is actually a better mechanic than Elden Ring's mausoleum system. And wearing 4 rings at once blew my little mind when I first encountered it.
Oh man! I completely forgot about the RINGS! I always thought it did not make sense that you got 10 fingers and can only hold two rings in dark souls one 😂
@@BigBadBalrog Oh, yeahhh. I have rarely used those, and when I did, it was mostly for quick souls (or whatever the equivalent is, I don't remember anymore. Runes?) Thamk for the info lol
Honestly, the enemy spam is much worse in ds3 than in ds2. I’m tired of when people play badly to make ds2 look worse than it is. You wouldn’t normally be running around aggroing every hollow in the Forest of Fallen Giants lmao. My favorite innovation is bonfire aesthetics. I loved being able to just immediately refight Gank Squad, Sinh, and Fume Knight. Yes, I genuinely love gank squad. I love figuring out how to kite them around the arena to get free hits, and it was an awesome feeling when I figured out that I could stand behind stalagmites and cheese the melee dudes. When I went behind them, I was just trying to heal with dragon charm lol.
I've always said that Dark Souls II is one of those games where they had a lot of ideas, they were just badly implemented. Without watching the video, I'll say that some of those are: 1. Power Stancing -- Without a doubt the best feature that was actually really good and later came back in Elden Ring and kinda in DS3 (in the form of paired weapons) 2. Multiple ways you can heal -- DS2 introduced lots of new consumables (life crystals) that you could use as a substitute for healing besides your main flask (yes I know DS1 also had the Elizabeth mushroom but that was something that you'd not really have regularly). Granted, they were a bit OP in DS2 (you could carry an unlimited number pretty much); they did come back in Sekiro albeit being limited to fewer uses. Turns out having more healing does in fact serve as a nice QoL without completely breaking the game 3. Pharros Lockstones -- I loved these things even though most of em were in fact, pointless. They came back for Elden Ring via the guise of Stonesword Keys and they were improved substantially. Still a nice feature nonetheless 4. Probably my favourite, OPTIONAL HARD MODES!!! -- Covenant of Champions if you want a difficult time with the game. Just go for it. Sekiro had two of these as well; The Bell Demon Blessing and Kuro's Charm. I wish we had more of these tbh :) 5. BOSS WEAPON ACQUISITION IS SO MUCH BETTER LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - In DS1 It was cool in concept but it was rather tedious gameplay wise. DS2 revolutionized it and now you just exchange the soul, no middle-man crafting BS. It was great. Anyway just wanted to get some of my own thoughts out.
I did a video for funsies like 8 months ago about this because I was kinda pissed at all the hate DS2 was getting even after so many years, lol -- if I could go back I'd re-do it since it does suck, but god damn I'm just happy whenever I see people giving DS2 some love :)
I've played them all except #2 (like many, I'm sure) and the power stance is so cool sounding! That's why I love using the Hunter Axe and Ludwig's Holy Blade in Bloodborne, getting those unique L2 combos is rad.
Dark souls 2 is amazing. It's incredible how it came out as well as it did since they had to scrap everything halfway through development and start over on a brand new engine
I have more than twice as many hours in DS2 than I have in 1 and 3 combined. I adore that game and never subscribed to the hate for it. Bonfire Ascetics, power stancing, insane amount of weapons, armor and spells/hexes/miracles, the aesthetic beauty of some of the areas (Shrine of Amana, Dragon Aerie, Brume Tower, Majula), the majestic soundtrack, boss fights full of spectacle (Sir Alonne, the Giant Lord, Fume Knight, the Looking Glass Knight), secret weapons like the Santiers Spear, the Creighton vs. Pate questline, Soul Vessels, the Rat and Bell covenants, the PvE covenant that culminates in the Darklurker, the no death and no bonfire rings, etc. These are some reasons I dig DS2. It’s just an awesome game. Loved the video man. Fun stuff and I dig your commentary and writing.
Well, first of all, thank you so much. I’m really happy you enjoyed the video! Also, I knew I was gonna get a lot of hate for making this video so I appreciate you having a mature stance on it and appreciating the good aspects of it as well! I think a lot of the heat for dark souls two can be a bit hyperbolic, and I think that not appreciating the interesting things that they tried to do would be to reject originality and new ideas. It’s some point I know I’m gonna do another Playthru of it! I worked really hard on this video and tried to take my time with it so I’m really glad you liked it brother 😀❤️
Time - our most precious consumable 😂 so true. As a full time Dark Souls II apologist I love the vid! The game had so many brilliant ideas and I’m glad they brought a lot of them back for Elden Ring (aka Dark Souls II 2)
I really do see Elden ring as a remake almost of dark souls 2. Taking everything that they know now and applying it. From the focus on magic and build diversity, returning power stances, bringing back diffrent pathing from the start (amazing aspect of ds2), letting more than just helmets have various effects making armor more than just fashion. Just a lot of stuff that got dropped in ds3 that was elated to see return, along with adding weapon arts, better animations and just more modern designs.
I hate despawning enemies so much... sure, it's not a 'problem', but because you have to buy Lifegems it makes the money you earn feel more limited. After all, I'm not just getting a set amount of Souls to max out the right stats and get the right weapons upgraded, I'm also paying a ton throughout the game for heals. And then you throw on top of that the enemies that can just stop showing up, and now it feels like how many Souls I can waste is extra limited. Not to mention the enemies are part of the difficulty of the area. If I can't get through something and then I make a few attempts and despawn some things forever, then it doesn't feel to me like I actually beat that zone legit. It just feels like the game's going easy on me and giving me a pity pass. Which is the last thing I want from freaking DARK SOULS of all things.
@@traeirby yes you are correct that mechanic was first in demon souls but there was a slight difference were as in demon souls you are the boss solo and in ds2 you team up with the boss.

I only started playing the souls series with 1, 3 months ago and I’m halfway through 3 now, I think 2 is way underrated tbh not as good as one but I honestly prefer it to 3, it felt so unique compared to 3 (I’m still loving 3 tho )
6:08 that door is a skip. Walk to it, don't roll, from the ledge on the other side. In my SL1 run it was useful so to not fight any enemy before the sentinels.
I’ll tell you man it hurts my heart that you weren’t notified in time to be there for the Premier but trust me I am going to correct this for the next video and I will make sure that notification goes out at least a day ahead of time! Love you brother always appreciate the support! ❤️
Yes, I’m sorry it took so long but now that I’ve started live streaming in between the videos, I’m not just sitting around editing all day but I did wanna make sure I took my time to make sure I did a good job for you!
I think my favourite is definitely bonfire ascetics because being able to rematch bosses or even grind early game makes up for a lot of the issues the game has imo. Sure I have to spend a ton of points into adaptability, but I just killed The Rotten 3 times so I'm okay with that. A mechanic I'm surprised you didn't mention though is changing how curse works, making it so that it hollows you rather than half your health until you lift the curse. It makes curse still dangerous since lifting it requires a valuable item but one that's not very out of the way like with DS1 purging stones which are a nightmare to find for a new player.
I think Adaptability, in a vacuum, is a fantastic idea. Making dodge-rolls more potent is cool, it's perfect for my playstyle. But nothing exists in a vacuum, and this is no exception. Taking away basic features and giving them back through stat investment is a bad idea. There's no reason to de-empower the player like this. The proper way to do it would be to have DS1 style roll states, and agility just adding up to what was already there, like scaling for weapons. It would be really stupid if you had to level some totally separate stat just to unlock scaling for your weapons. I know agility doesn't work quite like this, but i think this comparison works well enough
Thanks a lot for saying that I appreciate the feedback because I tried to work diligently but also take my time with this one and I’m glad to hear from you that it paid off!
The first time coming from DS1 being the first FS game to this i still don't understand the hate this game gets. The bosses except a few are underwhelming but thats my biggest gripes
Wait, at 4:02. Flashmans glass prison? That song absolutely kicks. I dont understand all the hate ds 2 gets. I mean, 1 has a lot of QoL bullshyte in it that would probably annoy tf out of someone playing it for the first time in 2023. 2 had a lot of really great things added, and a lot of enemy designs are just epic. I think a lot of the hate it gets is just unfair parroting. Its a good game. Sure, its got some really rough edges, but frankly *so does 1*
Oh yeah love that song! I agree with everything you said about DS1 and DS2. I feel like every Fromsoftware game has some good points and some bad points, but I enjoy them all!
don`t for get that is the only game in the series that actually has important changes on the next NG+, game has a lot of surprices till NG+5, and thats why i love dark souls 2, by far the best game in the series, haters they only know how to simp in anor londor lmfao
Hahahahah vey good point! I’ve actually heard that new game plus in armored core six changes the game up like dark souls two did so that’s actually another really important innovation so I’m glad you pointed that out!
Oh boy, I really dislike DkS2. I suppose I'll give you my takes. Honorable Mentions: I don't really mind the human effigy thing too much, Demon's Souls did it first though. Not having to trade a weapon for a boss weapon is nice though. 10: I don't know, maybe it removes penalty from messing up. The charm of the first couple games is if you mess up there's no fixing it. Also there are 2 blacksmiths other than the Giant blacksmith, you got the magic dude, Richert right below Firelink, and you got Vamos in the catacombs. Although Andre is the only one that can get a weapon to +15. 9: disagree, I like running around in Dark Souls 1. 2 is just a mash of different levels and makes it more convenient for the second game which is why it feels nice but if a game had the level design of 1 then it would be bad. 8: fair 7: I hate this mechanic, it is a bandaid. 6: Didn't really like this much either to be honest. 5: I don't know. I didn't really fall in love with the torch. Especially, ESPECIALLY the damn timer. For me personally, if it were a different game it would be cool, however, it's in a souls game and I don't really like messing with it. 4: Oh god I hate bonfire aesthetics so much. I really dislike that mechanic. I find it hard to put into words the problems I have with it but it just feels lame and cheaty and rubs me the wrong way. 3&2: I like how Dark Souls 3 handled dual wielding better than the other games. I'm not a power-stance fan nor much of a dual wielding fan but at least 3 can be balanced with it. Again it's hard to put into words but it just doesn't impress me at all. 1: Respecing is something that I don't mind as much, I rarely ever use it though and I don't think any game really needs it to be fun. I don't hate it but I don't love it. I see a lot of people mentioning NG+ changes in other videos, I actually hate that too. It makes it feel like the first run is less of a first run but part 1 of a full run. You need to get to + for the better rings and +2 for some covenant goodies if you can't get the points or items. It's just a lame thing to me too. Someone mentioned the feather for infinite use homeward bone, but the bones are cheap anyway, by the time you get the feather you'll have so many bones that the consumable is practically infinite already. Someone else mentioned not being shoved into NG+ after the final boss. I do like that, something about this game I do like. other than that the soundtrack I guess. I really dislike DkS2. I hate this game with all my heart. I've played it multiple times with friends too and that does not make it better. I have around 300 hrs in the game and I don't think there was a second I genuinely enjoyed.
Whew! That was a lot of hate 😂 I appreciate you sharing your feelings, I really like being able to understand different views and this was a very well thought out and expressed one! 👍
@@traeirby Thanks for recognizing my opinion 😊 i even disagree with ALL of your Personal statements and opinions :) I Played and consumed Dark Souls as much as my life and i see the world vastly much different than you do :) Thanks good luck
Yeah, that despawning 'innovation' fucking sucks. I like Dark Souls 2 well enough, but it has so many problems, and despawning enemies is one of those problems. Also, you forgot about Rickert, the mage smith in DS1. (But yes, you absolutely fuck yourself over by killing Andre because he's the only smith that can do divine upgrades, and upgrade a normal quality weapon from +5 to +6, and without that jump, you'll be unable to get some other upgrade paths from their respective smiths. I think the director for DS2 is a co-director on Elden Ring, so I think that's why there are several things from DS2 that weren't in DS3.
@@traeirby It makes farming annoying if you're unlucky and don't get the item you want. (and if you suck and don't want to increase the difficulty with bonfire ascetic, assuming you have one. Or maybe you just don't want to mess with the ascetic) Also if you're trying to get a smaller amount of souls for something and don't want to fight annoying enemies or bosses. Either way, I don't like it for those reasons. Though, I'm sure it'd be nice on the run up to Alonne if anyone actually killed those enemies and assuming they can despawn. It's probably better for people newer to the series, especially because DS2 already punishes you for dying. Still, I'm not one of those newer people so it's of limited use to me.

Always happy to see another video
❤️🥰 I really appreciate that, comments like that really make my day and make me feel good! I’ve already started writing the next video and I hope it’s gonna be fun!
It always makes my heart happy to see some love for DS2. Great content!
Glad to hear that you liked it! ❤️
Great video dude, keep up the good work
Thank you brother I appreciate that, I’m already working on the next one!
Really hope the bonfire ascetic gets the praise it deserves. Awesome video sir 👍
Thanks friend I’m glad you like it. I hope that my praise of the bonfire aesthetic was adequate! 😀
@@traeirby Yes! Btw, hope you're working on a top 10 frustrating things in Elden rign, cause that would be a smash hit i'm sure!
@@ruthWICKED I’ve definitely been compiling a list, and I KNOW IM GONNA GET HATE LOL
I only started playing the souls series with 1, 3 months ago and I’m halfway through 3 now, I think 2 is way underrated tbh not as good as one but I honestly prefer it to 3, it felt so unique compared to 3 (I’m still loving 3 tho )
Yeah they all have great qualities
Oh man, I freaking love DS2 content! Keep it coming
Well, that’s great because I’m planning on making fromsoftware videos for a long time!
6:08 that door is a skip. Walk to it, don't roll, from the ledge on the other side. In my SL1 run it was useful so to not fight any enemy before the sentinels.
Oh yeah! It’s been a while but I remember accidentally discovering the trick about coming from the other side!
Awesome video as always 🔥
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it and I’m already working on the next one!
Just started watching you and just like the chosen undead I gotta ring that bell
Oh, thank you very much sir appreciate that and I’m glad you enjoyed watching the video!
Ah yes, the best fromsoft game. I'm always happy to see a ds2 video
It’s fun talking about DS2 it’s so controversial 😂
@@traeirby even though it shouldn't be. It's a great game that people have been misinformed about
@@thebigbean8783 I agree, people just like being so hyperbolic lol
Love the video! Can you do the ten sexiest from soft enemies next?
It’s going into the notepad right now!
Ah god damnit TH-cam the notification came 1 hour after the premiere nvm i started watching the video i love it♥️
I’ll tell you man it hurts my heart that you weren’t notified in time to be there for the Premier but trust me I am going to correct this for the next video and I will make sure that notification goes out at least a day ahead of time! Love you brother always appreciate the support! ❤️
How could you only name Straid, but not the best npc of all of them, Ornifex.

He's back!
Ooooooh very good point there! I’m glad you mentioned that!
Fire content as always stay awesome
❤️👍😊 thanks so much
I think Adaptability, in a vacuum, is a fantastic idea.
I very much like the way you put that, 100% agree!
Big Daddy Trae at it again!
I’m so excited I finally got this one finished! I hope you liked it! 😊
the editing is so good in this one
Thanks a lot for saying that I appreciate the feedback because I tried to work diligently but also take my time with this one and I’m glad to hear from you that it paid off!
thx for this video man, amazing video.
You’re very welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
1:13 pure fear 😂😂
😂 oh yeah
The first time coming from DS1 being the first FS game to this i still don't understand the hate this game gets. The bosses except a few are underwhelming but thats my biggest gripes
Yeah, I think a lot of the problems with dark souls two are pretty overblown, but you know everybody on the Internet has to be hyperbolic 😂
Trading with the crows was easier. No more quitting and reloading.
Ohhhh yes! I forgot about that!
I. NEED. MOREEEEE
More ds2 or more countdowns? Cuz ill be making both!
Gooning to this right now
🤠
Your FromSoft videos are all amazing
That means a lot to hear, I'm really happy that you enjoy them! 😄
I really like your videos 👍🏼👍🏼
❤️😊 I’m so glad you like them!
Bonfire ascetic rawks
Heck yes!
The Deal Tho
😂
don`t for get that is the only game in the series that actually has important changes on the next NG+, game has a lot of surprices till NG+5, and thats why i love dark souls 2, by far the best game in the series, haters they only know how to simp in anor londor lmfao
8: fair
7: I hate this mechanic, it is a bandaid.
I loved the video
❤️ I’m glad you did! And thank you for letting me know!
Im gonna get a lot of hate for this. But Dark Souls 2 is my favorite souls game.
I think you’d be surprised at how many people hold that belief as well!
Ds2 hate is so undeserved
Hello my friend! I agree!
@@traeirby sure there are valid points but most of it is unfair nit picking
@@Personontheinternet4598 oh yeah I agree!
A non slander DS2 video? Can it really be?
I figured after all I did to spread so much DS2 hate I should give it the credit it deserves!
Ecxept the Bonfire ascetic, i disagree with all your Statements. Only the Bonfire ascetics were a great idea
Well all right then thanks for sharing your opinion 😊
@@traeirby Thanks for recognizing my opinion 😊 i even disagree with ALL of your Personal statements and opinions :)
I Played and consumed Dark Souls as much as my life and i see the world vastly much different than you do :) Thanks good luck
11. You dont use your nearly perfect engine from the first Dark Souls. You are using some clunky shitass engine hurray
VERY TRUE! 😂
Its objectively the worst game but theres a reason ive put 3 times as many hours into it as i have the original
Oh yeah I feel you there!
I went to this video to press dislike and shit in the comments. And I already pressed dislike.
🤣 congrats, there are now two of you lol
I’m curious, could you explain more about why you don’t like despawning?
@@jimmybalzac6021 I see! Thanks for explaining that, I totally understand 😊
