    Hi Jean, I looked at this vid again to refresh my memory and realized that you also gave dimensions for a smaller rectangle. I am so grateful for the extra you so generously tossed in. Thank you, love.

    I'm seeing this two years past your post date. About the waste...I love this way of making the flying geese since I don't have to worry about perfect seams corner to corner on the 45 degree angle. This is fantastic and so much quicker than any other way I have seen. Thank you, Jean!

    You did a great job on explaining the 1 seam flying geese. I am wanting to make flying geese for a quilt. So glad you should the small one because that is size I need
    You are so right in saying, if people think material wasted. Do make it. If you don’t like the tutorial -don’t watch it. Wish people didn’t feel they have to say something hateful. Most of APPRECIATE AND LEARN DO MUCB FROM YOURS AND OTHER LIKE Jenny Doan, Donna Jordan, Jennifer on Shabby Fabrics etc. You all give us so much. Especially ones like you, who give snd give and not sell. If you do sell, I don’t know where to look. 🙏 😊 THANK YOU

You are very kind! And no, I don't sell on TH-cam anything. I actually have/had an Etsy shop for years where I did sell my quilts ~ I only have a few left there. I'm pretty busy with making videos now:)

    Oh my gosh Jean! I love you!! Your attitude is pleasant & infectious 😃 any rude commenting people need to go on, scroll on or just freaking swipe lol. I never worry about wasted fabric, because it’s not really wasted, as you said in this video it’ll make the quilt warmer! Nothing wasteful about that! Any little bits from the traditional way can be used in a future quilt. I’m not a penny pincher because my pennies aka “bits” get put into a bin for another quilt & if too small they go into the bin for pet bed stuffing!! Love you & your authenticity- keep on a rocking!!
    Cheers from Central Texas 🤘🏼

    Glad your feeling better. To clear up the "waste" topic it is all in your outlook. You can sit and iron or draw lines on your squares to sew them and then probably cut them and throw them away. Very few people save those scraps. I can see this is faster and on point. Thanks for another great video!

      Hi Jean, Random question. My sewing machine has quit and it wasn't very old. Anyway I usually buy Brother, as I'm not as serious as you are. My one that just quit was maybe two years old. The one before was about 12 years old. Do you have a recommendation? I don't want to spend as much as you as I'm not where you are. Thanks so much!

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love my Brother but there are many straight stitch machines (without all the bells and whistles) that can be had (in my area) for about $600 - $800. That might seem a lot but for a sturdy machine to withstand the rigors of quilting, it is not. Of course, you can go and get an inexpensive machine from Joanns or Walmart and I suppose they are okay, but probably won't stand the test of time. I actually am looking at a Juki 2000qi - fabulous straight stitch quilting machine that can be had for about $700+, but a great machine! My friend just got one and LOVES it!!

    • @koriewilson3643
      @koriewilson3643 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for answering! Hubs says I am more serious. I do want some other stitches. I would like more wiggle room to get into machine quilting. I am just learning that. I have a lot of quilt tops I want to try and do that. I love quilting.
      I live very rural. I will be ordering online.

      I hope people don't think I have this 'who cares about waste' attitude...but PLEASE.....a bit of fabric is not the beginning of WW3!! But to some, perhaps it is!! But, great minds think alike....lets' go get MORE fabric!!! :)

  • @MartinGiadrosich
    @MartinGiadrosich 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I decided to do the one seam geese on my recent quilt because I was going to be "wasting fabric" anyway by sewing the squares on and having to trim them because the pattern called for it and I wasn't aware until today of "no waste" flying geese. So, everything was already cut out for me, so I was very happy to see the one seam method with the geese. :)

    I can see now how cutting the inch off and making the geese piece shorter makes less work after. I'm not worried about wasting fabric sewing it the way you are making it makes a more uniform flying geese. The way I look at it the more seams you have to sew to make the geese the more margin for error which makes for squaring up in the end and who wants to have to do that all the time.

  • @bonnielee8935
    @bonnielee8935 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Jean, I love this method! People could get creative by pulling it back and top stitching the curves like you demonstrated. But maybe they could find a way to add a little puffiness with a bit of batting, or even sew some type of ribbon or lace behind the diagonal open edge. There's so much someone could do with this method with the time you save in their initial construction. And of course, for the naysayers, well, there's always other videos about flying geese; there's the 4-at-a-time, there's one method by making 20 at a time from Kits by Carla, there's no-waste flying geese, and on and on and on. You're absolutely right though, if you don't like the "waste," then don't make them this way. It's just that simple. Good to see you are on the mend, and best of luck with your oral surgery next week.

    Hi Jean absolutely love your videos. In regards to the seam, what about ironing it open, then it would be flatter and joining the blocks would be a breeze. Keep up the good work.

  • @rosejohnson452
    @rosejohnson452 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The maneuver of flattening the big triangle to make the geese is called a "squash fold" in the art of paper folding, origami. You can slide your index finger up into the triangle and it opens up over your hand. Then flatten. You are squashing the mountain folded edge of the big rectangle. Fyi

      I don't use steam (or any water in any iron) due to spitting, scorching, spilling, staining, but mostly due to the distortion that I FOUND happened with steam on my cotton fabric. I like a nice hot dry iron, but always spritz with water directly onto the fabric or sizing/starch where it calls for it.

    why don't u press the seams open?

      On most quilting blocks, seams are always pressed 'to the dark side' :), as agreed amongst most quilters. Why? Almost always to ensure a sturdier seam, so I read. However, it has been brought to my attention that THIS particular seam COULD HAVE been pressed open!! I will listen and learn for the next time!! :)

      yes pressing to the dark side has been the rule of thumb but today opening the seams an pressing helps to have less bulk in the seams when quilting so of heard.

    The extra layer of fabric looks 3D sort of.

    I really don't see the waste, wouldn't you have to sew two plain squares one the ends and cut off anyway?. Ahhh I don't care this is easier and easier makes me happier, why can't people keep their bad comments to themselves

      Thanks Marisol...yes, some quilters don't like to 'waste' a crumb....I'm not so bothered and its the way I do things anyway! And like you, I don't sweat the small stuff and a bit of fabric left over is small stuff! ;) I have a lovely scrap bag full of bits!:)
