The thing that makes the Lamenters so noteworthy isn't how bad their luck it. The cursed founding is full of bad luck chapters.
It's that, no matter how bad their losses, how ruinous their penance, how often they are kicked and abused by fate..... They remain completely devoted to the cause.
They don't forsake civilians, or the emperor. They fight to the last for the imperium- knowingly walking to their doom with a shout of defiance and heads held high.
For those we cherish, We die in glory!
It's not about the torture porn. It's about being the light that won't be extinguished, even if the universe itself conspires to snuff it out.

At first they were fightingto resotre their former glory, but now they do all of this becue it is the right thing to do. Fuck whatever unforgivable shi the Imperioum is doing, it's time to do he right thing, for the right reasons and damn the consequences. That's the Lamenters in a nutshell. And not because of some zealous fervor for their Emperor or because they like violence: they do it to fulfill at least part of Big E's goals for his Space Marines:

The Lamenters are the third most important function in the Imperium of Man, second only to the Emperor himself and his Throne. You see, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. All that plot armor the Imperials have has to come from somewhere. The Lamenters' plot anti-armor is the counter balance that lets other characters survive.

He gives Dante the Blood Angels as his personal chapter.
Sanguinius turns to the Legions. "You are all my sons."
He steps down from his stage.
Walks past all of his Successor Chapters.
And stands before the Lamenters. "But you, you are my Legion"
Sanguinius then goes on to lead the Lamenters as his personal Legion until the end of time.

The Badab War was notable because it was a sector-wide civil war/insurgency primarily fought between two varieties of loyalist space marines. The Astral Claws and their fellow chapters like the Lamenters were tasked with guarding the sector from its own warp-tainted region, the Maelstrom. Lugft Huron basically was a great leader who coulda properly purged the Maelstrom, but the high lords of terra repeatedly shot down his proposals without full consideration or let the crusade get underway but then crippled it by diverting whole chapters elsewhere because of some other crisis.
Huron eventually goes "fuck it better to beg forgiveness then ask permission", and starts doing all these questionably legal things to build up a crusade force locally. Worst of all is that he low-key stopped paying taxes (claiming checks totally got put in the mail).
This escalated until he was declaring the sector independently governed by himself, clashing first with local power groups and then with forces dispatched by Terra once things got out of hand.
Astral Claws were doing bigger crimes behind the scenes (all innthe name of building up a crusade force for the good of the imperium), but all the evidence indicates they didn't fall to chaos during the Badab War. They fell *after losing*, and Huron is NOT out of the picture after that.

I think a fair explanation as to why the Lamenters are indeed popular (at least for their lore) is that they're like the 40k of 40k. For most people (DK included), 40k is brutal, unforgiving and just all-around horrible. But it's interesting for it and it's even more impressive to hear about people who do their best to be noble and righteous in such a vicious environment and still push forward. The lamenters are the most intense version of that. They're extremely loyal, despite constant suspicion and rejection, they will sacrifice themselves to protect humanity time and time again, yet despite their best efforts, great heroism and capable military planning, the universe just keeps fucking with them like with noone else.
The parts where I would add to make this episode do them a bit more justice is simply emphasising just how noble and true to their cause they actually are. It's that nobility among all that tragedy that makes them stand out from the rest of the Space Marines and I think that's what made them popular enough to win in the patreon vote. But ofc, if anyone wants more details on the Lamenters, I'd say Arch did a very good video on them.

To clarify; after the Badab War, all of the Astartes Chapters allied with Luggy were ordered into lengthy Penitent Crusades.
The Mantis Warriors managed to pull through their Crusade and after saving the lives of 270,000 imperial citizens from a tyranid hive fleet, were deemed fit to recieve the Emperor's blessing once more by a host of Inquisitorial agents.
The Executioners, another Astartes group allied to the Astral Claws, presumably all died fighting Necrons after fucking up a bunch of secessionist factions at the edges of the galaxy.
Finally, the Astral Claws would hereby be known as the Red Corsairs. And Lufgt Huron would change his name to Huron Blackheart. Basically just badass Chaos Space Pirates. These guys deserve their own episode all to themselves.

Minotaurs are a weird chapter of SMs. They are based on Spartans, like the couple of models available from Forge World look like straight up ancient Greek armor. They're also basically the ass boys of the High Lords of Terra, so they get all the best shit and best resources, but they're basically in charge of taking out other space marine chapters. Like I think historically they've fought more space marines than heretics or xenos. They've even fought the Custodes before. My personal theory is they exist so if the High Lords ever get really heretical they'll still have a chapter of SMs to bodyguard them.

    • @Nempo13
