Sid was a legend. came out with some funny, and bizarre lines at times. Watching a game as a kid, one of the players hit a check out, the crowd went mad, and sid comes out with something about "playing a honky tonk piano". It cracked me up, even tho i had no idea what he was talking about. But at that moment, i was hooked on his commentary. Rip bud
ThefightingCelt I think that is a bit of a disservice to the players like Manley, Bristow, Taylor etc. Sid was good, very good infact, but to say darts wouldn’t be where it is now is a bit over exaggerated.
Sid rules the commentary box. His commentary with Steven Fry was a blast. It would be amazing if they could get John McEnroe to guest commentate with Sid on a match.
Can't believe some of the shite said about Waddell in these comments. He was almost single handedly responsible for darts hitting the mainstream. Darts is an event, its about the crowd banter, theatre, and psychology. Sid knew that. Yes he liked Taylor, but how many sports have one man be so dominant? How can he not talk about him? Plus Manley is an unpleasant, dare I say it, cheat.
You only need to read Sid Waddell's Wikipedia page to realise how influential he was. Darts was a major sport on the TV well before Taylor's time. The whole issue of BDO and PDC split was that the TV coverage was decreasing.
I've seen so many people slag off Sid and they clearly don't understand darts , it's just all this modern generation that go for a piss up and they don't have a clue about the game, clueless
@@riddle1239 I really don't understand your comment!. What does a contemporary crowd who excessively drink alcohol and then act like morons have anything to do with how people view Sid?. They're 2 different eras and 2 different topics!. I Loved Sid but what the hell does someone going to the darts nowadays, obviously before Covid-19, drinking and being an idiot have to do with Sid Waddell's involvement in the game years before?. Absolute nonsense.
Can still remember word for word exactly what Sid said during a final with Jocky Wilson and Bristow in the 80s and I was a young lad . He said John Thomas Wilson the wee fifer from Kirkcaldy. They will be chewing the curtains up there tonight. Brilliant. Man was a legend
I never blamed Lewis for walking off, think about it; you're at the oche, dart lined up, and buddy behind you says "jinx" just as you're throwing. If this were in a pub a fight would break out no doubt(at the time adrian was 20 he probably did want to turn round and pop manley in the face). To see this in pro darts is just bullshit. Really childish of Manley. He could throw decent darts he never had to be a dick.
Diddlediddledum....if Manley really said that then he should receive a life ban. As simple as that. That is overstepping the mark, in my view, I would say, such as, sort of.
He made it all up, there's no proof. He gives it up in the next sentence. "I don't know what he said". Cause he said nothing. Lewis has always been a crybaby
@@doraemon402 I remember watching the game and Manly was saying all sorts. I actually found it funny because Adrian was getting so rattled and it was good tv.
After analysis, it was found that Manley had actually said, “If I were a rich man, Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum. All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.”
Manley actually said "having it large are ya Adrian?" as Adrian was going for a shot. I play darts myself and when I'm in the zone I block out the crowd watching in the pub, but when your opponent deliberately tries to throw you off it's a completely different story. Take a fool's advice here. Anyway, look it at it now. Adrian is a 2 time world champion and Peter has 3 tonkings from Taylor in world finals to his name. I doubt Lewis lets this get to him anymore
Lol all this rubbish about Waddell in comments... Yes, he did talk rubbish at times, but he had some good commentary, and literally made darts what it is now.
Yes Sid Waddel was a pure genius. Although I don't agree with him on this. There's no rule that says you can't talk whilst someone is about to throw. Adrian Lewis might not like it, but it wasn't cheating. Also he could have just been muttering to himself in frustration. He simply wound lewis up as he knew that at the time Lewis was fairly inexperienced and would react. In my opinion that's the game. If you can't handle pressure and intimidation than either don't play or deal with it officially by notifying the officials. Don't just storm off
If Sid say's you're a CHEAT then you're a CHEAT. Plenty of players today that push those boundaries from coughing/ talking/ tapping dart barrels and standing where they shouldn't be trying to put the other player off. Then you have callers calling game shot when the dart is nowhere near the bloody double.
He was right in what he was saying here Manley cheated you don't say something in your opponents ear when he's about to throw Manley wasn't good enough to beat the big boys like Phil, Barney and Adie so he had to try to put them off and cheat his way to victory
Mardle will never come up to Sid’s level as a darts commentator! Sid didn’t like players being disrespectful to each other! Mardle seems to promote that side to the game!
Like him or Hate him!!! Least he made a fame for himself) For those who don't like him, What you lot Done for yourself then!!!!! Not seen you on lot in same job yet!!!
What's the definition of cheating?? Surely no matter what manly said or when he said it, it's not cheating as there is no rule that prevents someone talking
There is no direct rule to prevent people coughing either, but you can be fined by the DRA for doing it to distract your opponent. Talking to deliberately put your opponent off is a finable offence in the DRAs eyes as well.
What do you mean?you can step over the line , shout as your opponents throwing, walk up to the board and stab your darts init , injure your opponent , Haha there's a load of ways to cheat
Sid always had a good soundbite or two but after a while at being at Sky he became almost unbearable to listen to he was great when he started out at the Bbc then went dulalley over at sky , but for sure a real character with a distinctive and much missed voice
I couldn't imagine how boring Darts would be with out this hero commentating along with John Gwynne of course People say he doesn't have a clue about darts how can you say that when he's been commentating for over 20 years Also he's written many books & written for TV.. Wat have you don to entertain me?
Because it's different when it's right behind you, you expect the crowd to be making noise, when you don't expect your opponent to talk (which they aren't meant to) it does put you off
What is this guy talking about? He clearly states he doesn't know. So how can he call someone a cheat? He said he watched the clip six or seven times and still can't tell. If he can't decide after watching it that many times why is he making a claim?
I think he couldn't tell exactly what was said, but (as he clearly states) he spotted Manley speaking at the particular moment that Lewis was about to throw. I agree with his opinion. It's cheating - no matter what words came out of his mouth. But how they're not put off with all the shouting from the crowd is anyone's guess. Anyway, it's all old news now. Storm in a teacup/handbags at ten paces material for bitches to get stuck into.
It's a magical thing. It's called an opinion. It's what the smart people have. They're also allowed to have it, so you complaining about him having it, is going to do jack shit.
Wadell knew Taylor=Money, and that's why he always sided with him. To say someone like Manley was cheating is a filthy comment. We all know the filthy tricks Taylor pulled off over the years, with his interviews, and undermining, and ridiculing opponents via innuendo. Darts is a mental sport, not as much physical, and a mental cheat is a hell of lot worse-but, the sneaky part by Taylor, is that it can't be proven. Taylor=Conman, and PDC Shareholder, by the way :)
Best comment ever on Taylor. Sky gave him the platform to do his opponents. He's chucking it cos he can't take getting beat and Sky can't help him there.
How can you cheat at darts? Don't be precious and just throw the dart and smile. If I can take someone talking as I throw and I'm shit. A pro should be able too as well
+whatever happens happens. Said like a guy who has never played the game at any sort of competitive level. Trust me, this is probably the lowest move a dart player can make and Manley knew precisely what he was doing.

Shame he didn't make it to 180.
He was the last ‘voice of’ a sport.
We no longer have those people. David Vine in snooker, Murray Walker in F1, Sid Waddell in darts.
