This was the very first plane I got for review and it has been with me since October 2014. Soon after I reviewed it I wanted more from this little plane as my skills in flying progressed, so I upgraded the motor to a Turnigy Aerodrive D3530/14 1100kv motor which served me well for about 3 years and had plenty of power on 3S using the same 9x6 prop used in this video. However, in late 2017 I had a small-ish crash with the Trainstar (first one ever with this plane) as I was trying to do a low inverted pass and lost lift at low speed. The plane stalled and hit the nose on the ground at a angle that cause the cowl and motor mount to break. I ordered those parts from A-Main Hobbies (Hobbyking no longer stock this plane or the parts) and received them about 3 months later due to them being out of stock. I put the plane back together but upon bench testing it I found that it had a terrible vibration at full throttle. Turns out, the motor shaft had bent ever so slightly and at high RPMs, it would vibrate too much to be safe to use. So, I went shopping for a new motor... Found this PROPDRIVE motor that seemed almost too big to use, but since it was cheap, I decided to try it. I believe the stock motor was 1000kv, then the Turnigy was 1100kv and now I decided I wanted more revs and went with a 1400kv. I wasn't sure if the motor would fit or if I had chosen the right KV for this plane, but I installed the motor and tried it out. Well, it fits - only just - and it's very nice on 3S and flies somewhat similar to the Turnigy motor with a little more top speed, but on 4S this motor has transformed the Trainstar into something completely different.
After a few flights I decided to film it and show you what it can do. One thing is for sure, this is hardly the docile trainer it once was that helped me hone my flying skills a few years ago. This thing is a wolf in sheep's clothing and will scare the pants of most folks that aren't expecting it to be this fast. The good thing is that it still flies very well.
Note: ESC does get a little warm if you fly it hard on 4S, so best give it a few minutes before going up again with a fresh pack. Going back-to-back with batteries may not be ideal with this setup on 4S. Motor is happy as can be, but the 60amp ESC needs a break between packs. There's no heat issues on 3S though. Just FYI.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching. :)
