Jake, you're the man bro, you're the reason why I started vlogging my uni life so I really miss your vlogs a lot! We all would love to see you make a massive comeback to vlogging!
yeah, this is why i fix my laptop and i never go to apple to fix simple things..... they fixed my gpu of the 2011 macbook pro like 3 times and its dead, i managed to disable it so i can use the laptop with the intel gpu haha :D
Just watched your video as my MacBook has exactly the same problem and sound! You are far more confident than me in fixing it but your video has enabled me to confirm diagnosis and I can find a local company to assist. Much as I love Apple products, my 13” MacBook Pro is only 3 years old and the fan is failing and my beloved MacBook Air was 6 years old when there was an RAM failure which could not be fixed as integral to the Motherboard and no spare parts available! Thank you for such a clear and informative video - now following!
The black rubber pad on the fan connector is protection, under it there is a small circuit board so the fan can speak with the logic board for fan speed etc. The fan that you put in is taken from a more recent MacBook, on the earlier models the fan was black, and on the later ones they are silver :-)
You da man, Jake. Your Macbook fan wasn't the only thing grumbling, though. I'm sure many of your TH-cam FANS are disappointed when you fail to post videos of your day-to-day life and experiences. You've got us trained, man. Throw us a bone once in a while.
I have a late 2016 MPB without touchbar. My fan has started making that same sound over the last few months. Not very often. It usually only happens for a minute every once in a while when I boot into either MacOS or windows, never when I’m playing the sims 4 or doing a lot of productivity work, just normal fan function then.
Great video! I wonder if you'll stick to your 2012 model for editing or you'll update to one of the newest macs. I have a mid-2012. I updated the memory and the SSD and personally think it's one of the best macs ever made.
About to upgrade my RAM and the fan, so thank you for this video! I've previously upgraded my hard drive to a SSD, best thing I've done, so I'm continuing the upgrades, sooo much cheaper than getting a new laptop or paying someone else to upgrade it for me. The fan was 10 euro on amazon.
Thank you. Workers at the nearby airport are already complaining that my 2011 MBP fan is too loud for them to concrentrate when I'm turning my machine on. I wasn't sure if a replacement would be any more quiet, but that helps the decision making.
Great video! Thank you very much! Why did you get the fans with ifix it and not with say Amazon? There are a bunch of alternatives at lower cost. Are they as good as the ifixit fan? I pressume they all should work ok. Please, advice. Best greetings.
They probably all work fine but I guess I just have more trust in iFixit as a brand, and I quite like them as a company so happy to sometimes pay a bit more to support them.
thanks for your enlightenment Jake, I think I'm going to follow your tutorial. I have the exact issues on my 2013 MacBook Pro, the left fan is somehow making noise the same as yours. The (left) fan only cost around 17 pounds in Indonesia :)
I have i think similar problem but my laptop wont turn on at all the fan spinning with similar sound, but no light at the screen , do you think replacing the fan might help?!
I’m about to replace both fans after 9 years although only one is broken, thanks for the video mate was most helpful!! Which software did you use to monitor the fan speed??????
You can use Macs Fan Control or smcFanControl :) I personally like Macs Fan Control better because the readings are updated faster. If this helps after 11 months....
Was wondering if I could repair my MacBook Air as well, stumbled upon your video, so glad I found it. Will keep it saved for when the time comes :) Thx bro
I had a similar problem with my HP laptop, I had to replace the fan three times. The reason is that the fans are very poorly made and if your power settings are set to get maximum performance out of your laptop, it will spin too fast and eventually damage the bearings of the fan, and make that horrible noise. The last time I changed the fan, I just reinstalled Windows and let power settings on default. I didn't have that problem again so far. Fingers crossed though...
Hi Jake , i have to do the same thing - and in the apple store they also told me that it could be a software issue so i´ve decided to try my self. the video was so helpful thanks a lot!
I adore my mid- '12 even though the display cracked a year ago when I shut it on a pen. I have it HDMI'd to a 55" 4K. Too many keys are janked so I use a wireless keyboard and trackpad. All = splendid. Use a 10.5 iPadPro a lot these days as well. Was surprised to find I can do quite a lot. Cloud makes it easy to pick up on one where I left off on the other sans sync. I've always devved on live servers anyway, so don't need localhost and to install plethora of maintenance heavy shit. Took Mom's Air to a 3rd party repair that sent it far away to another 3rd party repair shack and cost just about as much as Apple. The trackpad is jiggly so it was a loss. Checking iFixIt to see if there's something I can do. Marvelous vid, mate. 👍🏽
Loved this video, I do my best to do all my own repairs on my pc's and mac products. I have let Apple fix one or two things over the years that I was not confident in fixing. Other than that though I fix my own computers. Thanks for the reference to ifixit, I will be looking into some of their tools. Could you possibly do a series on Javascript & Dom scripting? I just started a new job and I have to become proficient in Javascript and Dom scripting. Most of the Javascript training on youtube does not provide you with the ability to verify that the code you have written is correct. I know Javascript is probably not very challenging for you, and that it might be boring for you to do a series in it, but it would be very helpful. I know your busy, but I think your able to explain things in a way that's easy to follow and so the learning is easier. Please think about it. Your amazing!!! Cheers
2years back my macbook pro battery was dead. Now I replaced with new battery. But MacBook is not working when I turn on. What should I do?____________ My decision is : I want to replace my macbook pro with new mother board and fan.
my 2011 macbook pro is still going, my gpu is dead but i managed to disable it so the laptop can boot and be used lol. Its still "fast" and i only edit photos on lightroom and photoshop. Im only going to buy a new one when it decides to die, even having a broken gpu that was fixed by apple like 3 times (in warranty and that program that they had for the bad gpu probs). I like to see people using thei machines till they die, this is the best for the planet and we make sure we use our things to the max livespan as possible. Hope it lastes a bit more years :DDDD
Am doing 1st year computer science degree and am glad that I have found your channel, really interesting seeing how life after grad is etc

At 2:48 when you first present us with the sound: It sounds like a bycicle spike card ( th-cam.com/video/krPQ1PMM00Y/w-d-xo.html ) so maybe blades were just pretty worn out and were "bumping" at something. In my experience, if it were the bearing, it would be a more constant noise, not so much rattling. But yeah, there is definitely a difference in laptop fan and desktop fan (the most different seems to be a frequency of the noise, as this seems to be a higher pitched noise than the noise that a fan in my desktop is making).
Jake, I'm less than 2 minutes into your vid, and I advise you to NEVER take the advise of anyone at the Apple store. Never. In another comment here I show you a great Macbook repair channel by Louis Rossmann, in New York City. If you watch a couple of his vids, you'll understand why not to trust Apple EVER. He initiated a suit against Apple last year as a part of a class action suit, supporting 3rd-party 'right to repair', which Apple is heavily against. Anyway, FAN RATTLE HAS ZERO TO DO with any software, app, or system function. - You figured that out, thankfully. I'll watch the rest of the vid now. EDIT: Hey you survived the repair and it works fine. Some tips: Never try and lever against or apply pressure to any of the chips on the board - you did fine. Angled pressure can break solder connections under the chips and can break traces in and on the board as well. You figured out that flip-up connector! Those can be really difficult for first-timer encounters. The fan could be an alternate supplier 2nd or 3rd party. As long as it works, it's fine.
Ivy Bridge was a good architecture. I have a MacBook Pro only 3 years older than yours and it is insufferable to use even with extra RAM, SSD, with a minimal install of patched Mojave Too bad I can't afford a new one
Good to see you back, Jake! If anyone is interested in watching/learning how to repair Macbooks online, OR have them repaired (even internationally) go to Louis Rossmann's channel here: th-cam.com/users/rossmanngroup He shows you how he repairs Macbooks live, and offers parts, info, and service for your Macbook when Apple tells you it can't be fixed or that it will cost you $700 plus your first-born child. Every day he broadcasts himself fixing Macbooks brought to him by folks who were told at the Apple store that they couldn't be fixed. His videos are very entertaining as well and has over 800 thousand subscribers. He is located in NYC, and you can send your Macbook from anywhere in the world. He has 10 employees at his NYC store. Just sayin'. Check him out.
It looked like you did a great job. Save your laptop! Siguyine~ Tedane~ It was interesting. By the way, I like the way you explained it calmly and easily.
OK, so I watched and liked this even through I have no apple products, nor am I likely to try my hand at fixing stuff anytime soon. I think I'm just waiting for the next vlog. Hopefully the next installment of Cooking with Jake.
Lol mine died exactly after 3 years. Something happened to the keyboard and the touchpad, they just stopped working one day; the repairs were obnoxiously expensive so I just threw it away. :(
Unfortunately I couldn't hear the advice over the sound of my Macbook fan
bro its probably running at 12,000 rpm! lol
Just put it in rice
Jake, you're the man bro, you're the reason why I started vlogging my uni life so I really miss your vlogs a lot! We all would love to see you make a massive comeback to vlogging!
Well done, Jake - I admire how smart, frugal, and ambitious you are - You jumped right in. No fear. Bravo!
My god that Apple staff diagnosis had me laughing out loud
yeah, this is why i fix my laptop and i never go to apple to fix simple things..... they fixed my gpu of the 2011 macbook pro like 3 times and its dead, i managed to disable it so i can use the laptop with the intel gpu haha :D

Jake, you always have a refreshing perspective on things and everything that you do makes this world a better place. I can't thank you enough. 🙏

Does it make a difference if you put a newer one on an older model ?
"The Genius at the apple store. " Apple made the name condescending to start with, it sounds sarcastic when you say it lmao
Yeah they proper shot themselves in the foot with that one
Ofnadwy Me walks into Apple store.
Me: I need a genius to fix my Mac! 😂
Awesome video Jake. Do you happen to have the part number/link that you purchased the fan from?

Did you replace the battery? Any brand you can recommend? I had trouble with the one I selected. It lost capacity immediately.

Is it too difficult to say which, what year and the size of the mbp? Because y'know, macbook pro could mean any of them.
Hi Jake, is it necessary to purchase Apple Care + for MacBook Pro?
I’m about to replace both fans after 9 years although only one is broken, thanks for the video mate was most helpful!! Which software did you use to monitor the fan speed??????

Can u tell, which laptop would be good for bioinfomatics practicals ?
Waiting for reply

Nice fix! But you should have tested it under heavy load because the fan doesnt turn on till its hot and when you just started up it def is not hot.
Jake you're back!
Good to see you’re doing well. Keep it up, Jake. 👍
Hi Jake , i have to do the same thing - and in the apple store they also told me that it could be a software issue so i´ve decided to try my self. the video was so helpful thanks a lot!
Is it possible to repair the faulty fan ?
I accidentally popped off the head of the flex cable, can I glue it back on?
which version year of macbook are you using?
Every day I am waiting for your updated vlogs, hopefully, we will see your new vlogs soon.
What a smart choice! You did a great job, Jake! You should open a repair shop on your own! Believe me, you will be rich.
thank you for giving me the confidence to repair my own computer parts
my MacBook fan did that I've left it a while and now it SCREAMS. need to fix it.
1:18, it fine as a space heater.
Bring back the vlogs! We miss you!
I fixed this issue by opening the fan. There is a bush which holds it in place which was loose, now it works normal.
omg Jake we don't care if the videos are not interesting. You could vlog yourself sleeping and we would still watch!
LoL
Good video. I just replaced my MacBook Pro 13 battery it sucked replacing it.
This is like destiny, my MacBook fan has just started rattling as well
Brilliant!! Will be trying this too. thanks for posting.

Great video! You might want to look at Louis Rossmann's videos of Mac repairs. He agrees with your opinion of the Genius's at the Apple Store.
your replacement is very easy to follow, thanks man~!!
you should ask louis, he will be happily fix your macbook for free, with just some additional mac swear word, right Louis? :D
2years back my macbook pro battery was dead. Now I replaced with new battery. But MacBook is not working when I turn on.

100th viewer! Nice video Jake.
Great video Jake what camera have you got?
Thanks! This was filmed on a Panasonic GH5. Links to my other cameras & equipment are in the description.

it's my first time to see the inside of the MAC
Oh this was very interesting and satisfying!
well done mate thanks
thanks really helpful
Let us know if you are going to buy a new one!!BTW loved the video
Not niche at all. Great! And glad it worked
OMG. I burst out laughing when it works well. I am proud of you Jake!!!
My MBP fans have weird sound, but after watching your video, it's gone... what happened!
Good to see you back, Jake!

Comment before watching, nice to hear u again
same laptop and the same problem started with mine a month ago well i sat on the laptop lol
Seems that repairing Mac laptops is not as complicated then when working with Windows laptops
Wtf is a Windows laptop lmao
@@Nevexo287 A Windows laptop...
Apple Laptops are harder to repair on your own, especially with Apple's predatory practices towards self-repair.
Ok so service centres around the globe are alike in so many ways
I missed your voice Jake!
Hello
It looked like you did a great job. Save your laptop! Siguyine~ Tedane~ It was interesting. By the way, I like the way you explained it calmly and easily.
I had this issue on my old laptop and I applied some mineral oil to the fan which fixed it
lots of 'hope'
It's tragic that they got rid of the "bong" when MacBooks power up on new MacBooks :'(
OK, so I watched and liked this even through I have no apple products, nor am I likely to try my hand at fixing stuff anytime soon. I think I'm just waiting for the next vlog. Hopefully the next installment of Cooking with Jake.
why not fixing the fun? or cleaning the fun?
Lol mine died exactly after 3 years. Something happened to the keyboard and the touchpad, they just stopped working one day; the repairs were obnoxiously expensive so I just threw it away. :(
Software issue... what a ''genius''
Aay good to see you
Hello Jake
I mean, computers are cool, but I have no interest in their inner workings... I still sat and watched this video, filled with enjoyment
I remember watching you unboxing this year's ago
you are good!
If i shake mine a certain way it’ll stop rattling lol
2 weeks later: replacing my exploded mac
lol its not gonna happened
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
WARNING!
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.
just kidding great video!!🌟
Don't try this at the Apple Store
What a handsome young man! ;)
Nice
Someone at the ifixit shipping department seems to have misplaced their snack.
15 Inch MacBook Pro.
Hiiii
Mid-2012? Uhm.. looks like a mid-2013
Anh Jake ơi.
