"I would like to be remembered as a good human being, someone who brought little happiness, hope and reflection into life and into the world and perhaps a bit of faith by those religious pieces. If I were to die seeing that just one person had converted because of me, I would have been satisfied." - Wojciech Kilar, may your memory and opus live forever.

Here is a fair question I think. You want to be thought of---well, I assume that you need to think it first--as a good human being. Your case is dependent on your criteria, of course, but if you eat meat, if you wear or use the flesh of animals---that is, if you participate in the mass delusion that you have the right to steal the lives of sentient beings who feel pain, know fear and suffering, and want to live as much as you do (go to an abattoir if you doubt any of this), then how can you see yourself as good? Of course there are other criteria which relate to people, environment, etc., but billions and billions of feeling creatures who have no way to prevent their own murders are dependent on you. If you fail them, you must consider the possibility that you are bad. You can enjoy Kilar and Kilimanjaro, and none of this will matter. You will have been bad, evil if you like---no God, no man, no fictive redeemer--nobody in his right mind will believe that you have brought good or happiness to anyone.
Hope you enjoy the rest of Kilar's work....

We played this at the 1997 marching band competition in Toledo Ohio at the State Championships and we knew we were going to be way over the time limit. The judges tried to stop us from finishing this piece but we had the color guard aggressively bar them from the field with their flags and guns until the bitter end and afterwards the drum major got laid so much that sex lost all meaning to him and he became a hermit. The audience clearly knew who won even though we got disqualified but at least I got into the community college safety school of my choice.

I'm not sure why, and I don't really care to know why, but this 19th century romantic russian/eastern european style resonates so deeply within me. Perhaps it has to do with listening to Tchaikovsky during Christmas from infancy. Whatever the case may be, I am grateful. Such beautiful music.

Yes, that's an interesting point. Why is this not boring or wearisome? I guess because there is so much variety in the way the insistent phrase is delivered. It's almost like hearing the same story from a multitude of angles, and there IS a sense of progress as the piece moves along.

Listen to John Williams's piece "Schindler's workforce" (original soundtrack for Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List") and you will instantly hear the unmistakable similarity between the two pieces.

Fun Fact: "Exodus" was actually used in a Trailer for "Schindlers List". Maybe John Williams got some inspiration from Kilar. :)

No. Williams just didnt have the music ready when trailer was released and they simply used Killar's work.

He's talking about an actual piece composed by Williams that was used on Schindler's. I know exactly the one he's talking about.

When I first saw Schindler's List, I remember listening for the compelling piece I'd heard in the trailer and was puzzled it didn't show up--just one that was rather similar. I didn't know at the time that it wasn't Williams' music in the trailer. (Not that the actual score for Schindler's List was any less compelling--especially that main violin theme.)

interesting piece. Very similar to Ravel's Bolero.

How can one motif repeated over and over be this interesting? This works better than Bolero.

It is a shame that this great piece of music was not composed in 1964. Stanley Kubrick & MGM could have used it in the trailer to 2001: A Space Odyssey as Spielberg did in Schindler's List.

Oh no, what a shame indeed that this wasn't used in a bloody TRAILER! I'm sure this weighed heavily on Kubrick's mind before he died, regretting to not include this in a freaking trailer lol

Comparisons to Ravel's Bolero are of course utterly ridiculous. The only thing that could remotely put the two works together is the repetitious theme and perhaps a few bars of side drum, close to the end. The construction of the work/orchestration/inclusion of voices and musical climaxes are as about as far away from Ravel's writing as you could possibly get.
It is however, like most of Kilars's music.......fascinating.
