      We need to upgrade our power grid first. I talked someone from energy Alberta (or whatever they are called), and he said our electric grid cannot handle the demand for more EV. And updating the grid will take decades, and no level of government is even talking/investing in upgrading the grid 😂

    I think saying, "Government, don't get involved. Let people buy what they want to buy when they want to buy it" has a bad assumption that everyone has the money to buy what they want. I think there is a big group of people who are very concerned about the environment and want to get an EV but can't afford to. With incentives it helps people get over the hump of the price difference between gas and EV. Especially early on when tech is in its infancy it helps companies figure out the tech and increase economy of scale so prices can go down faster than just letting the market slowly transition to EV. Without incentives to drive sales, how many EV models would there be? A handful? Looking at hybrids, it was pretty much just Toyota Prius and Honda Insight for the longest time.

    • @GlennLaycock
      @GlennLaycock 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the primary concern is the impact from creation to return to mother nature .. we are going to get smaller EVs soon .. but shoot just get a hybrid and further than that a FWD based sedan or small van. My little Elantra gets magical -- it was explained to me to which I replied to the sales person "yes like I said - magic" -- but driving in suburban-city in -- for 3 season I get around 5.3L/100k (4.3L to 6.3L) .. it is literally magic and the Elantra is good enough for many. Toyota has their van, and Kia is going to have a hybrid van too. The NEED and WANT - you buy what you can transition too and time will evolve and optimize the market to allow more people to act on the want part of it. BTW I would have got the hybrid-Elantra but they were all sold out "due to crazy demand" - and it was $2000 more but better content on top of the power-train (including 3 more years warranty on that powertrain).

    I think the rebates were simply to balance out the initial cost of building electric vehicles (extensive R&D) because EVs would have been unreachable for most. It was a jumpstart for the technology and ensure that EVs get a real traction v. a false start. I don't think anyone would buy a $40K Leaf (just an example) when it came out. No company wants to build a product that just loses money but now there's momentum, some consistency in technology, and reductions of cost to build, so yes, maybe they're unnecessary now. Just my thoughts.

    The Grand Highlander has a “ no sale “on it ( as of 2 weeks ago anyways ) that is a Toyota not a dealership situation. This is as you said, due to the third party made airbags being defective. A fix should be in place b6 now but production is probably no where near turning* out the numbers of replacement airbags that are needed for all sold or sitting on the lot but not being released to customers Grand Highlanders. Remember Toyota is also dealing with an issue with crank bearing issues on the new a Tundra twin turbo V6, that apparently is being recalled ( I guess the6 have a fix? ) with over 100,000 units being affected. @@johnjames7712 Agree. My experience in the communications industry with batteries is that they start losing capacity so eventually the pack will have to be replaced. By that point the vehicle will be worth less than the battery pack. I would buy an EV with the longest Extended Warraty on the battery pack and then drive it until the end of that warranty. At that point I would stick it at the end of the driveway with a "FREE" sign on it.

    Responsible governments trying to find ways to reduce emissions dealing with climate change. There aren’t a lot of tools democratic governments can use to achieve these goals, other than to support green initiatives, support the R & D for new technologies like EVs.
    I understand the no government involvement but it’s not a level playing field, we’re still in the baby steps phase of EVs. And to allow super subsidized Chinese cars in with all that CCP R&D, our burgeoning EV car industry would be destroyed quickly, and auto manufacturers would have to all go back to ICE vehicles. And we’d be back in the good all days of a huge carbon footprint. Kind of a rock and a hard place scenario.

  • @user-tj4br4it7f
    @user-tj4br4it7f 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Saying govts should cut incentive programs and let people buy what they want overlooks the entire climate change movement that led to them in the first place, the same as incentives for home energy efficiency upgrades. Whether you believe they are worthwhile or not is a separate question but govt always has its finger on the scale to pick winners and losers in everything they do. The tariffs on Chinese vehicles reflect a belief that the PRC govt is doing the same things to reduce the costs of exported vehicles. There is value in maintaining an ability to produce EVs in other parts of the world.

      The banks heavily subsidize the money factor in the lease, making it effectively cheaper than purchasing it in some situations. The leasing company also inflates the residuals, so they absorb the depreciation. Only problem is that you have virtually zero equity at the end of your lease.

    Totally agree there should be zero government incentives for EV's let the market decide. Every taxpayer is subsidising an EV owner. Did I get a government incentive on my Silverado Duramax diesel of course not. Don't know what BC does but in Ont EV owners are getting kind of a free ride because while gas or diesel powered cars there is a lot of tax on fuel some of which goes toward roads. Not a huge deal now but should EV sales really take off they will have to figure out some method of applying a tax to even the playing field. As a sidebar I did consider a F-150 Lightning but too much money, I like my Silverado Duramax better as you can contest from driving one in Newfoundland. I want a truck that sounds like a truck, just something about a diesel clatter.

    In the future we will look back and see thr EV incentives were more a national security drive to bring modern tech manufacturing back home. If China invades Taiwan and secure natural resources in Africa and Russia, we will be dependent on them for most energy and semiconductor technology until the industry is ramped in higher cost areas that are more friendly. That's what we are subsidizing!

      Not “most” energy as we will still have fossil fuels.
      Solution: Rare earth minerals requirements are reduced 85% for a PHEV versus an EV, probably 95% for a regular hybrid, China stranglehold reduced accordingly. And this nullifies the rationale for the $40B+ continent wide charging station boondoggle. There are critical energy related priorities this money could be put toward.

    Santa Fe - I will re-write this as it is hitting close to home - and it is still a working out over the next month anyway - those transmission are a very proven design - literally 100s of thousands have been built by Hyundai and Kia with constant improvement and innovation (reason they are now "wet design" for example). The Santa-Fe got a new generation of software that was faulty - easy fix IF it was not damaged already. So the units being sold now should all be factory correct or fixed upon arrival at the dealer. As a point of interest - Audi - was the company that took the excellent dual clutch design off the race track and brought it to the domestic market. I am pretty sure that Hyundai and Kia looked to Audi to see if it seemed a customer satisfier worth the extra cost.

But since it's a brand new model, it's important to consider recommendations. I’m conflicted on the tariffs. Chinese manufacturers have significantly benefited from decades from tariffs and other barriers to entry for Western vehicles.
