Over the past 20 years Derby City Council has implemented a very successful campaign of crushing anything of interest or beauty that may potentially bring investors and shoppers back into the city centre.

      It’s a very strange place
When I started walking I just thought eventually I’d come across something Christmassy or some event or feature to bring shoppers into the city centre

@@GimbalWalkTV The council doesn't really ''do'' Christmas anymore. They prefer shoppers to travel to neighbouring towns and cities. That's why half the shops are vacant and it always looks dead. There was a time when the streets were rammed full.

I was born and grew up in Derby. I’m saddened to see the hideous destruction of what once was a pretty small market town. In particular, the market place. As a child I can remember livestock brought from the outlying farms for sale in pens in the market place which now appears to be just full of crap and gaudy graffiti like advertising. I was planning a return to see the town but having watched this video and observed the change I’m now not going to bother.

It causes offence to celebrate a Christian festival.

Also why go to the expense of treating residents and visitors with respect or bonhomie when DCC can just pray they spend their money quickly and then bugger off to somewhere that DOES no how to present itself and invest in looking good and offering what's expected?!?
If they could just have the place open to shoppers 9am-12pm or 2-5pm and then close it to traffic they would do.

I lived in Derby in the 1940s, it was a happy bustling town then with lots of character. When I returned years later I was horrified. The historic market place had been ruined by a concrete monstrocity and a "fountain" that strongly resembled a gents` urinal. New soulless shopping centres were drawing the crowds away from the centre leaving once successful stores like Ranbys boarded up and with desolation came crime, litter and graffitti. The planners and councillors who allowed this to happen were obviously too stupid to even see what they were doing and now present and future generations will pay for their idiocy.

A lot of large offices have gone from the city centre, so a lot of people who would nip to the shops in their lunch or after work have all gone. The large shopping centre has killed off the rest of the city centre. Then Covid and internet shopping has had an impact too. The council do little to encourage people into the city centre, like you say the Christmas lights are embarrassing. Car parking is expensive and they are closing more and more roads to cars. Public transport isn't great in Derby either.

Only 120 years out. The oldest pub in Derby is Ye Olde Dolphin Inn which dates back to 1530.
Derby may not look much, but i've lived there my whole life and I have a fondness for it. It may not be doing so well at the moment, what city is during a pandemic? But I feel like it has still got enough going for it and it has a lot of missed potential. I'd argue that we had a weak council for the longest time and we still have had no clear majority for the last few years, but it's my hope a new council with a majority could make Derby better. And their current plans for regeneration look promising.

A good video showing the outside streets of Derby but due to not being allowed to film inside the shopping centre, you can't show the other major feature of the retail (The Derbion Centre/Westfield/Eagle/Intu or whatever people like to call it). Also the Derby Market Hall is going through renovation with the traders displaced (some ended up in the Eagle Market). I'm not from Derby but I like the layout of the city centre where its easy to walk everywhere. Nottingham is the major retail destination for that region and whilst there's a lot more going on there, it can get very crowded. Depending on what one is after, popping into Derby is a lot easier and calmer. When driving from the M1, its a lot easier to get into and out of Derby city centre with the car parks next to the ring road.

When Derby last had a council that actually spent money, they tried to sell Normanton as the 'multi culti' centre of town and did the place up a bit - has been a hub of South Asian community/families for much longer than East Europeans though. Then the money ran out and the tourists ran a mile. For a while the council tried to make an effort then they left everyone in the lurch just like they always do.

    • @GyitMulhaneski-GloriousYears

      @@henchy3rd
Tragedy is - the local authority puts a few token quid into papering over the cracks on just about everything every 10-20 years and then let's the poor buggers who keep them in a job to get on with it.
They happily let (arguably) the World's first municipal park become a crime zone and fall into ruin until Lottery money (like the Pride Park zone and the Velodrome, Derby did far better out of National schemes and Central Government then they ever did from the City Council).
Also - Normanton used to be a high end part of town for housing and amenities before the last part of the last century. DCC don't want voters to remember Derby when it was a market town without all the problems it has these days.
Also when it tries integrate communities it forgets about them once an election's out of the way. Famously back in the 2000s an elderly community leader was once jailed to a great public outcry for withdrawing her tax payments due to the state of housing and the red light district which was spilling over into the city from Normanton.
Also there used to be events to aid integration such as the Asian Games (on Normanton Park?). Like most things that could have boosted the city's profile as well as community cohesion they scrapped it because they couldn't be arsed anymore.
The rap sheet is endless. Useless bastards, ever since the 1980s anyway.

Somehow the walk along St Peter's St looks even more depressing through that lens than it even is in real life normally (the litter and idiotic speeding pavement cyclists are a feature regular visitors will recognise). Quite an achievement. Tragic. The Council and related organisations should hang their heads in shame.
Anyone who doesn't believe it used to be a buzzing and lively place should check the videos of 70s and 80s Derby - especially the one title "Traffic problems in Derby". A one way system badly reorganised. Over-pedestrianisation. Crap lego land architecture for half a century or more. Contempt for voters and tax payers and much liked existing amenities that are just seen as JCB fodder.
The place was generally despondent and falling behind the rest of urban England even before CV19 - smooth photography here but it captures the places essence right now and that's pretty unforgiving!

Actually by area Derby has more green space than any other city. You did not see any of it in this video. Check out: Markeaton Park, Darley Abbey Park and Allestree Park on the internet. Also within easy reach (5-10 minutes driving) Derby has about four stately homes including Kedleston Hall, Locko Park, Spondon and England's first country park - Elvaston Castle country park, which is absolutely beautiful.

Born in Derby & now living in California…last visit to city 2009 & I found the shops, streets & atmosphere depressingly ugly & out of touch with what the local people wanted even then. Viewing your video once again compelled me to conclude that the ‘look & feel’ of the city is in the hands of people who have no love, care or personal attachment to my former home. It looks like a city that has been conquered by an utterly alien & antagonistic enemy who has stripped every street, structure & building of its cultural or historical references & replaced them with meaningless, drab images & symbols that none of the enslaved population can relate to. Here & there, the conquerors openly rub in their contempt for us - for example, a fountain like a gigantic urinal in the marketplace. Can anyone honestly imagine tourists burning with desire to visit a city where History & elegance have been so systematically erased?

    • @MartinMilnerUK
      @MartinMilnerUK 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

And yet, as you will know, Derby has some great history - Erasmus Darwin, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Joseph Wright to begin with plus all of the amazing history around the Industrial Revolution, including the role of Derby's Silk Mill.

The tiny Victoria Centre and the tram that not everyone actually likes that much / nearly destroyed Beeston and the fairly decent couple of theatres (+ an Argos version of the Symphony Hall) they still have because they know there'd be an outcry if they closed (because Derby's council as well as the ridiculous 'Derby Live' quango is so s*****y and useless they always deliver Nottingham extra custom from Derby and other towns which I'm sure helps with the takings.
Yes I do know the situation and I do know the region very well).
