    In addition to the many PPE comments, I'd reccomend a full face clear screen when you're grinding in odd places, it's also much more comfortable over your glasses. It's always the errant spark that bounces off your cheek that gets you.
    I think you did fine with the welding, I work in sheet metal, so well versed in thin stuff and I see nothing wrong with your efforts. I try to keep away from vehicles (unless it's my own, had to do a bit on a camper I had) and half the time you're chasing nasty rotten stuff that just erupts at you. Admittedly I have had to rebuild the subframe on a Transit tipper, which was horrid, but within my skills. I much prefer TIG'ing stainless for catering 🤣.
    The fact that your runs went so well shows that the parent metal (the cab) it still pretty solid, which will be relieving to know.
    If you haven't already, get a narrow "finger file" belt sander for your compressor, invaluable for all sorts.
    One last thing, mix up equal parts acetone, Automatic Transmission Fluid, and diesel for the best bolt unsiezer ever. Brush it on, leave it half an hour, then it should have got in enough to start wiggling free 😁

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great comment thanks for all the useful info! The full face shield is a must I think. Especially as the real grinding hasn’t started yet. We have chassis to do soon. I would really like a full face with air filter in one because it’s such a faf taking the mask off every time I need to film or speak etc. they’re a bit pricey though.
      Anyway thanks again for the comment 👍

      I'd definitely want more coverage if going under to do the chassis. Not just for stuff flying around, but dust settles and it WILL go in your eyes when you stand up.
      My work one is a clear screen with a flip down auto darkening welding mask so best of both and it's a dream to have.
      See if you can get hold of a shotblasters hood, you'll have full coverage then.
      Looking forward to seeing your progress on this :)

    You ought to cover any glass when you are grinding or welding.....the red hot sparks WILL stick to the glass and leave it rough. You can remove the grinding spatter with a scraper, but it will leave pit marks in the glass. Ask me how i know lol
    You should also have a blow gun on the end of your airline to blow out any fires, cos you're bound to get some as you progress with the build.

      And don't worry about how long everything is taking - it takes time to learn 'on the job' ... in the 80's my father built a brick kitchen extension with a book from the library, it took time but he got better / quicker as he learnt more and got practice! Just start on bits that are hidden and bulk buy grinding disks!

    Just see ur channel so subscribed there. Did a bit of this work before. U get rust removal wheels for the drill and the grinder. Two types sand paper flapper wheels and plastic string wheels. Real good to get into places. The primer u need so called weld through primer. Also when welding sheet metal short quick blasts of weld and spot around it it. Try not to do long runs the metal warps. Don’t just spray the head of the screw with WD spray the nut behind if u can get at and use the wire brush in the threads of the screw or bolt if u can. And spend the money and by knipex pump pliers they just grip everting and don’t slip. It’s all hard work and dirty work. Just keep going

    Rust converter works on rust. if you grind away all the rust, it has nothing to convert and you've wasted your time. Welding is a great skill to learn, so keep practicing every now an then on odd bits of metal you can find and you will soon be able to make your welds look professional. And as others have said - wear PPE. Those "chairs" look magnificent!

    • @LesNewell
      @LesNewell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After 30+ years of fixing cars I have found that plating over rust is a very bad idea. The big problem is that water seeps between the old metal and the new then the patch rusts out really quickly. Always cut out the rot back to clean metal then butt weld a new patch. This video is a pretty good tutorial th-cam.com/video/krfZRdYY7iY/w-d-xo.html
      Preparing patches for butt welding is tedious and butt welds can take a bit of mastering but in the end you have a much better job. The tighter the gap the easier it is to weld.
      When welding, keep the weld area clean. Weld through primer is mostly a lie. Like any other paint it burns away in the weld area and it really messes up the weld. It's fine to spray the panel but keep the actual weld area as clean as possible. Look for a true high zinc content primer, preferably 90% zinc or higher. Avoid Zinc 182. That stuff is useless and doesn't stick very well. To add insult to injury there's actually very little zinc in it! The good stuff is heavy. You should really notice the difference when you pick up the can.

      It was a weld through primer which is designed to be welded. But it did still smoke a fair bit!

    Hi guys, new viewer to the channel, just binged your videos, I noticed in the first video you talked about people in the comments giving you advice, but was confused as that was the first video, do you have another channel? - Love the series, can't wait for the next episode!

    Trucks have seats, not chairs.

      When they’re in the cab they’re seats. When they’re out on the ground they’re chairs 😂

      Yes we had quite a few H&S comments 😅We did have safety glasses but we may have forgotten to wear them a few times. Need to form a new habit of putting them on! Thanks for the comment.

    Its plain to see you have no idea of what you are doing , or how to use tools , you where blowing though the metal , as the body is rusty , the patch you cut should have being bigger not a small patch , plus the setting where wrong thats why the weld just looks awful and is not strong . you have chopped in to the metal that bolts the seat down to the cab . please be very carfull as you have weakened that area with poor welding . just be careful you are a lovely couple , the job is massive for what you want .

    "WD"-40 is a "Water Dispersant" great for cleaning, lubricating not so much.

      @@RoadToOffGrid I've found AC90 or Duck Oil to be much better than WD40. They seem to penetrate better and are more oily.
