Grew up watching Sky King, at noon on Saturday. It was the last Saturday morning show, before you got on with your day. Because of this show, I ended up a military aviator and a professional pilot. Thanks, Sky King!
I wonder how many baby-boomers became pilots with this show under their belts? I opted for scuba gear but preferred sails to Mike Nelson's power-boat - if only gasoline had stayed at 23.9 or 21.9 or 19.9.
Holy shit can't believe this popped up on TH-cam. I'm 70 years old and I'm still a fan. What I really appreciated about these great B&W T.V. shows are that the background music is where it should be in the background not the foreground like today's movie's. I can actually hear the audio clearly.
@@Lrose68I watched this a kid. I ended up as an AX on P-3s. Within 10 years after I got out I moved to Alaska and bought a small airplane that I learned to fly. I had jobs up here where I was transported in many kinds of airplanes from Beavers on floats to Cessna Citations. Also a lot of helicopter time to oil platforms and mountain top communications sites. Even had a ride in a C-47 that flew on D Day for the Canadians. I sat in the jump seat on a beautiful day. I’ve lost a few friends to airplane crashes.
We had a farm. My dad would let me watch sky king and then go back down to finish my chores. I became a pilot and flew jets for 13000 hrs. Thank you sky king indeed. Loved both airplanes.
When the producers of SKY KING approached the Cessna Aircraft Company to see if they would supply a plane for the series, Cessna agreed to provide a Cessna 310, with one proviso: the stunt pilot had to be a Cessna employee. The producers agreed and a Cessna pilot and WWII Army Air Corps veteran (who flew P-47 Thunderbolts in the European theater) named Bill Fergusson was assigned to the show. In the late 1980s, I met Bill and his wife Dayle in a screenwriting class in Nashville and we all remained good friends until Bill passed over a decade ago. He was an amazing man and pilot. If you could strap a pair of wings on a Maytag washer, Bill could get it up in the pattern and bring it back down safely... I miss him to this day.
Sky King, Sea Hunt, and Fury were my favorite shows back in 1960 when I was 6 years old. I wanted to fly like Sky King, scuba dive like Mike Nelson, and live on a ranch and ride horses like Joey Newton.
I'm 80 yrs of age now. This was one of my favorite Saturday morning shows when I was a little boy. God bless whoever preserved this and brought it back here!!! (from Wayne in northwest Arkansas)
I'm almost 75 now and waited anxiously every Saturday for Sky King to come on at 12 noon when I was a kid. I had the biggest crush on Penny but also was fascinated with aviation as a child. I don't remember watching this particular episode but I've seen many of them. Hopefully, more will appear here on TH-cam soon!!! Thanks for the memories.
I’m 75 too, Disney gave us the best, Annette the heart throb before Penny. Spin and Marty, Davy Crockett, Highway Patrol we saw the first Helicopters. Sea Hunt scuba divers.
I always looked forward to watching Sky King! I later got to spend 47 years flying commercially and 40 of those years and 25,000 hours enjoying the heck out of seeing this planet from above!
judging by your comments I'm sure it was a pleasure flying with you too.I hope you're enjoying retirement.Cant say i am.Oh well thanks you cheered me up for a bit.never saw this looks good😊
Whirly Bird had me hooked on helicopters as a child, but when I was going to go for a ride in one with the rest of the family, I climbed onto the floor of the car I was so freaked out by the actual thing! 🤣🤣🤣 I was a dork child. 🫠🫠🫠
I was so happy to see this pop up on my TH-cam. I discovered 'Sky King' at age 6, 1956, when my folks could afford buying a television. The series had 'cliffhangers' that were the best! For about 6-days, I was on pins and needles until the next episode to figure out what happened. 'Sky King' was the coolest man ever, with his plane...and I probably had a crush on Penny too. Do sorry she has left us.
Same here it was one of my favorite shows I even had a toy model of his plane the "Songbird" & I also love watching Sgt, Preston of the Yukon & his dog King It was a great time being a kid "back in the day"
SONGBIRD I was a Cessna T-50 BOBCAT also known as The Bamboo Bomber because of its construction with a wooden fuselage aft of the cockpit. The Bobcat had a gas-powered heater under the rear seat. This heater sometimes caused an inflight fire. An inflight fire could be exciting.
and do you remember "The story you are about to see is true...' and later 'This is the city, etc' Great days, they was.. and B and W worked just fine once we got Cable t.v.
I was 6 years old when it first aired and loved watching "SKY KING" every Saturday. I guess most of us are around the same age, I'm 79. It was just part of the early days of tv. This episode shows a 1955 Chrysler wagon and a 1955 Plymouth police car, so I'm guessing it was made in 1955 ? I was 10 when this episode was aired.
I'm 71 years old and used to watch this on Saturday morning and dreamed about flying,,only got to the fixin' em part😂 but i wouldnt trade that part for anything,,, too many good memories......

I am still a big fan...even have a large model of the Cessna 'Songbird' ( Sky's second aircraft) on display in my home!
Yep, brings back memories, especially as my buddy back in the 70's had the same model Cessna, and we used to fly all over the interior of Florida, where it could land & takeoff in these out-of-the-way impossibly short dirt 'runways' all around Lake Okeechobee... cool plane, and it was considered state of the art back in the 50's!
The Cessna T-50 was used in the earlier episodes. It was designed in the 1930s along with the military versions AT-17 and the UT-78 . 5422 were produced. In later episodes, Sky King moved to the newer Cessna 310
At 6 years old I liked the Cessna 310 so much more. It looked cooler and faster, and those wing tanks just set it off. But now, those radial engines sound so great.

The Adventures of Sky King. Growing up in the fifties, and being nuts about cowboys, weren't we all. It was the times. And for me, I had another interest too. Airplanes. Got to actually meet Kirby Grant around '71 as a 10 year old at an autograph show in small town Ms. *Also nice to learn Nabisco stood for "National Biscuit Company"
I loved this show (and whirlibirds) back in the early 60's. We'd set up chairs and pretend we were flying while watching the shows. I've loved airplanes ever since.
Sky King, Safari, Sea Hunt, The Lone Ranger. All great adventure TV shows from the fifties which we enjoyed as children. This particular segment was from 1955 and the Cessna 310B twin would have been fairly new back then to
Being 74 years old I grew up watching this with Sea Hunt also

I loved Sky King, it made me want to live in the west and have adventures. I moved to AZ in 1979. Thanks Sky King.
This and the Whirlybirds motivated me to become a pilot. I retired in 2019 with over 36,000 accident free hours.
Got to actually meet Kirby Grant around '71 as a 10 year old at an autograph show in small town Ms. *Also nice to learn Nabisco stood for "National Biscuit Company"
He was one of the celebrity guests at a local telethon in my home town many years ago.
Nice guy.
Watching my Saturday morning shows shaped my life in aviation and public service.
How fun to see this old show again. My sister and I watched it on Saturdays. Thank you!
Oh God i am old I remember this show very well
I loved this show (and whirlibirds) back in the early 60's. We'd set up chairs and pretend we were flying while watching the shows. I've loved airplanes ever since.
Sky King, Safari, Sea Hunt, The Lone Ranger. All great adventure TV shows from the fifties which we enjoyed as children. This particular segment was from 1955 and the Cessna 310B twin would have been fairly new back then to
Even as a young kid I could see that Penny was something special!
