- In this week’s video I’m showcasing one of my top manga of all-time, Gantz by Hiroya Oku!
You have probably already heard of Gantz as a manga that’s full of mind-blowing action, blood and gore, and amazing art, but it’s also a manga full of something a little more unexpected…Heart.

One of the themes of Gantz is the value of human life, what does a human life mean when it can just be revived? The manga doesn’t really expand on this theme yet it stuck with me whenever I first read the panel because I haven’t thought of that until then. However there are a lot of unanswered questions in Gantz and that’s intentional, everything is left to interpretation, take what you will from Gantz, but understand it’s value.

Gantz is a masterpiece. It had so many great moments. I loved the final arc it was amazing. Some of my other favs were the Buddhist Alien, Dinosaur Alien and Osaka missions. My favorite character would have to be Reika. Also I think you would enjoy Gantz:E and Gantz:G.
Agreed, such a masterpiece, and man, that final arc... So amazing! The perfect ending. Those are all some of my favorites too! The designs of the aliens in those were amazing and they were pivotal moments in the series. I have a hard time picking a favorite character haha but Reika is awesome!
You are definitely right! I have Gantz G and really enjoyed it. I have the first volume of Gantz:E in Japanese. I'm still learning Japanese right now, but realized it was released in French as well so I'm going to pick it up so I can read it officially!

This is the only manga I have read first page to last more than once. First time was in high-school where I loved the violence and thought this was the coolest thing, later I reread it and realized it was a bit more than just violence and have reread it another two times when I got two of my friends to read it. When I first began recommending it after the first read I only talked about how awesome, hype and how much suspension the fight fights had. I now recommend it by talking about the character development, where at the beginning you absolutely hate Kei's guts, but by the end you are rooting for him.
Amazing review and I just gotta say Muscle Rider story and development just left me in tears. One of my all time favorites.
Gantz often gets described as just a fun action gore show with no substance, which is a huge disservice imo. There's a lot more depth to it than people give it credit for. The characters act very human, compared to most manga. The theme of life and death and human nature is also extremely well done in Gantz. It's not afraid to delve into controversial topics either, aside from just gore. One of my favorite aspects is that you really have no idea who will survive and who wont until the end. It is so unpredictable, keeping the stakes high at all times. Kurono progression is also very well done! One of my favorite characters! Everyone can agree Gantz has it's flaws but it's strengths is often overlooked by many. Doesn't get enough credit.
Compared to Inuyashiki by the same author, i think Gantz is miles ahead in all aspects. Idk how anyone can say Inuyashiki is better, but that seems to be the common opinion. It's true Inuyashiki differentiates itself with having an old protagonist, though i don't think that alone makes it a masterpiece. But that's what people act like. You even have a character named Yoshikazu who's pretty much identical within Gantz to Inuyashiki, who's also a great character. Then you have Nishi who's quite similar to Hiro, i find Nishi more interesting personally. On top of that Gantz has a much bigger cast and so many more elements. Still like Inyashiki but people tend to compare them a lot and completely disregard the characters in Gantz, to make Inuyashiki look good. Bit of a rant, just a trend i've noticed.
This is why I love your channel because you make great content like this. I love Gantz, and you make me want to read it again.

Amazing review honestly.
Its a masterpiece just like you said, the attention to details like the shade of a finger till the the mechanical part of every piece of a robot or organism like feather
its something you don't see a lot those days in manga and make you think the time you have to wait just for one chapters was sometime worth the wait of 1 month.
You can see the attention and the quality put in every other manga made by author like Inuyashiki, GIGANT.
Now im just waiting for the update of the new GantZ:E

Great review! I was reading online (thankfully on a large IPad) the art is awesome and I really enjoyed the story. I was planning on buying the omnibus collection but you got me thinking about hard covers

Yes!! I waas hoping you'd do a review of Gantz. I picked up the first omni back in August then binge read through to Vol. 9. Vol.10 has just arrived through the post so cannot wait to get back into it. It's an astonishing read with characters that grow and some of the best art in any comic ever. The art can be so detailed that some of the panels can be tricky to decipher, but that's why a deluxe hardcover edition would be so worth it.
Kei was indeed an *asshole*, but as the story progressed and his relationship with Tae grew, he became such a great character. Some scenes with Tae are utterly heartbreaking and I was close to tears.
A masterpiece.
Man, I had to!! haha I was nitpicking this one, because Gantz means so much to me. It took me longer to get this video done than I expected because I wanted to do it justice, but I'm really happy with how it turned out and it means a lot to hear this!!
That's so exciting that Vol. 10 just arrived. Gantz really keeps you invested and wanting to get into the next chapter, so I'm sure you are anxious to get into the next volume! Couldn't agree more about the art and characters. Definitely two of Gantz's biggest strong suits.
Oh man yeah, his art would shine even more in a Deluxe! Has a lot of detail and his panels would really benefit from being blown up in a larger format. Here's hoping we get one soon and thank you so much as always Coyley!

With the omnibuses wrapping up soon, I'm holding out hope! Wonder if they'll do Trigun with all the buzz around the series as of late next, though (Would be very happy about this too!) but Gantz is my most wanted!

@@AnimeCollective Imho this has to be the way forward for your channel as there are a limited amount of comparisons that can be made between omnibuses and single volumes of manga, as interesting as they are. Perhaps you can put the hyped up chainsaw man next on your chopping block.

Yea I absolutely love Gantz, it’s my second favourite manga, it’s such an amazing story, I remember frantically flicking through the pages and reading them as quick as possible in one of the battles because I just couldn’t find out quick enough what the outcome would be.
And oh god yes I hope Dark Horse brings out a deluxe, I’m actually surprised they didn’t to begin with since they decided to bring out 3 volume omnibus’, but I’d so love a deluxe, I hope they do it. Maybe after they finish the current omnibus, I just got vol 10 a few days ago.
It's up there for me too! I always go back and forth with Gantz and Dorohedoro. It's a tight race between them haha but man, it's one of the absolute best of the best. I was the exact same way! No matter how many times I pick the series up I can't stop reading even when I already know what's going to happen haha
Man yeah, a Deluxe would be amazing. I know a lot of us dream of owning Gantz hardcovers one day! I'm really surprised they didn't go straight with a Deluxe release too.
Although, they did omnibuses for BOTI too before the Deluxe, but would have been nice to pick up the Deluxes from the jump instead of the omnibuses. I think they will after the omnibus release too! They'd be throwing money away if they didn't. Although, I wonder if Trigun will be the next Deluxe they come out with. I don't know why I have that feeling haha
@@AnimeCollective Yea I do love that Dark Horse got the rights to Berserk, Hellsing & Gantz, because no other company would have given us those beautiful deluxe editions. I adore my Berserk & Hellsing deluxes. I also have to finish off Blade of the Immortal, I only have the first deluxe.

I really liked Gantz and it gets strangely "deep" the more the story goes forward, but in a good way at least for what I expected when I started reading.
If I *remember correctly*, Osaka's mission was probably one of my favorite parts because that's when I noticed more clearly that his art had evolved so much since the beginning, and it gets even better!

The shift in tone later on was such a turning point for me and I love how deep it got too. It was surprising, but in a good way as you said! Man yeah, the Osaka mission was one of my favorite parts also. I believe that's when I started noticing a change in his art too. It really was amazing to see how much he evolved as an artist over the course of the series! I've enjoyed reading everyone's love for and thoughts on Gantz, so thank you so much also!!!

This sold me. I watched the movie on Netflix years ago and thought it was absolutely incredible, but I never actually read the manga or watched the series. I'm gonna pick up the manga asap.

I didn't really mind how Dark Horse did the sound effects in Gantz while reading, but I am usually a fan of keeping the original sound effects and adding small translations underneath them on the page!
I’m definitely getting the Prime1 statues of Reika and Anzu, absolutely love them.
Oh man, jealous haha! Those look incredible. I really hope they release more statues from Gantz too. I would love one of Kato and the Nurarihyon (although not sure how they'd scale that haha) or one of Oka in the hard suit.

i totally agree with how lively these panels are, i felt this way while reading Inuyashiki and Chainsaw Man! Hiroya Oku does a great job always immersing the reader into his wonderfully dynamic world 🙌🏻 for example i forgot inuyashiki was about inuyashiki by volume 3 (if you know you know 😅)

I had this overwhelming feeling to do a Gantz video this week! haha I always kind of wait to see what I'm in the mood to do and then go with it. I had been meaning to do this video for a long time, but wanted to do it justice so it took me longer than I thought! Ah yeah haha I will have a video comparing the Gantz editions coming in the future, so something to look forward to!
Oh man, Inuyashiki and Chainsaw Man! Yes, I agree. Oku really captures me with his panels in any manga he creates and I can feel the emotion that Tatsuki Fujimoto puts into his as well. Both are incredible at world-building too as you said!

i want the gantz singles so bad but they cost so much lol i hope they make a deluxe version and for color probs like dark blue
I recently started reading it and love it so far (up to vol 12) its a shame because as much as i enjoy everything about it so far, its pretty tough to reccomend it to ppl because of how overly tasteless scenes involving sex can be. It doesn't really phase me seeing as how the world of Gantz is inherently fucked up and nihilistic, but i couldn't imagine many modern fans of anime and manga gulping it down like some of us do.

Good review. I read Gantz this year and I can only say that it is a seinen manga masterpiece. And when I finished it, it seemed that Hiroya Oku was just trying to tell us a story of love and friendship; Kei doing everything for his girlfriend and learning to be a better person through Kato and Kato improve himself through Kei. Simply incredible.
I feel the same about it being a masterpiece! It has stuck with me over time and every time I look at it on the shelf or pick it up again I feel a rush of excitement.The ending was perfect and I can't put it down when I go to read it! A story of love and friendship is an awesome way to put it. The connections that were made are one of my favorite parts of the series, so couldn't agree more!
The story started with kei and Kato saving a homeless man and ended with kei and Kato saving the world.
*I love gantz so much. It's so underrated just like inuyashiki, I wish it got a proper anime adaptation. I just hate how it started to feel rushed towards the end and when I think of 2 certain characters I really get sad ):*

Since the singles are close to impossible to get and the omnibuses from what I've seen/read arent the best reading experience since they are soooo thick Im holding out for a better release but its def on my list to get this for sure!

Wainting for a Gantz Deluxe Edition, come on Dark Horse!
Just finished Gantz. It was one of the quickest binge reading experiences I've ever had for any manga. The first two thirds of Gantz was top tier content. The final arc started out incredibly well, like some of the best panels I've seen outside of Berserk and One Punch Man. Most of the final arc did drag for me/I became less invested in it. It did get much better near the end. However, it needed at least one more chapter to wrap up the story properly. I'd give it an 8 to 8.5/10.

Gantz could easily work as a tv series but it definitely needs to clean up a lot like some of their sideplots like the vampires and also at a little more reflections of the eventual payoffs. The first live action movie is not the bad in terms of showing of the off the wall action but doesn't handle the characters that well.

Absolutely loved Kei’s character development. Went from hating him so much to really loving and rooting for him.
Yea the art is amazing, some of the panels actually look like a black and white picture, like it was taken with a camera, there’s a lot that’s photorealistic, especially anything with the buildings, cars, objects etc.
I wish I would have mentioned this in the video haha Couldn't agree more with everything you said!!! The backgrounds are so realistic and so is his gore. Everything that happens just feels real and this is largely thanks to the level of realism and detail in his art. It really does look like it was taken with a camera as you said!
If I remember correctly from an interview I read with him, the backgrounds are rendered digitally, while his characters are drawn by hand, because he really wants to call them out in his panels and that the detailed, realistic backgrounds contrast with the organic warmth of the characters. Love how he does this!
It's how I feel about Inio Asano's panels too. They both are amazing when it comes to their backgrounds and creating rich settings, but they also capture the feeling of the moment and the characters.

This manga was sooooo flawed but very good. Great concept but omg it can get so bad sometimes. Its a peculiar series but definitely push through the hard times
I remember being very upset with the explanation that the whole thing is (spoiler)
just a game show for aliens. Like that didn't explain why half the aliens looked the way they did and a bunch of other things. After that point it just became pretty artwork with a huge empty hole where the intrigue used to exist. It's literally the plot to a punchline in the anime Level E that all the things happening in the previous episodes were a silly game show. Idk if that's just me. I just stopped reading at that point because I was in it for the world building and was unsatisfied. It was fun up until that point.
Are you sure you understand the explanation properly? It is not just a game show, the god alien thing explains that he gave humans advance technology and weapons to fight off aliens who invaded earth because apparently earth is important resources for the god alien thing. Unfortunately the elite humans use gantz technology for a game show instead of sharing it with society.

Man, I'm in the middle of reading gantz rn and dear God taes death has absolutely broke me, I've never felt so sad about a death of a fictional character and keis reaction to her death just makes it so much worse
edit: finished the series and my god was it beautiful, it had a simple ending for a complex show, im genuinely glad that they didnt stop it in some way that left a sour taste, probably a seinen i will never forget

It really is. The singles are one of the most expensive to collect for sure. Volume 20 especially! Filled the gaps I had in the singles with the omnibuses, but I really hope they release a Deluxe soon. That would be the ultimate way to collect the series so here's hoping!
I will say that the omnibuses are thick since they are 3-in-1's but they are easy to read. Definitely way better than something like the Death Note All-In-One edition (That is definitely a brick!). They are the cheapest way to collect the series as of now, but I completely understand why some wouldn't want to pick up omnibuses especially when there's potential for a Deluxe release in the future!

It's almost a crime these haven't gotten the deluxe treatment yet! Dark Horse/Embracer Group is missing out on so much money with like a dozen of huge manga IP's that would sell like hot cakes if they would get a deluxe edition. Seriously it's been 2.5 years since they announced BotI and almost 3 years since Hellsing, are they really that stupid??
Definitely would sell like crazy and deserves the Deluxe treatment! Once the omnibuses finish releasing (almost there!), I think they will start working on a Deluxe Edition release. I can only hope, because the demand is high. Gantz is one of the most wanted, probably the most wanted, but there's many more I'd love to see (Trigun and Eden most notably for me). I remember they did a panel and Gantz is one of their top selling series, so a Deluxe is definitely in the future but the question is as to when. Hopefully really soon!

I'm torn between getting Gantz or I am a Hero. I read a couple vols of Gantz last year (when I started getting into manga) and dropped it due to being all over the place. But now that I found my taste, both interest me now. I might be leaning towards I am a Hero becasue it's just more coherent and more well structured than Gantz imho. But unless you can say otherwise, I'd like to hear yalls opinions.
Honestly you can't really go wrong with either. Gantz is more volumes and is a bit all over the place and the end is not the best but the ride of it makes that okay. I am a Hero is also great but is also really bizarre at time and has an ending that also kinda falls apart. If it were me I'd go I am a Hero just because it's not super popular and the volumes could go out of print or get pricey. Also Gantz singles are super expensive and the omnibuses aren't completer yet (I think there are 2 left to completion). But that's just my opinion. Maybe read a volume or two of each online then decide. I have both and don't regret buying or owning either series. Hope this helps.
