As soon as I saw the intro shot of Sprocket, it gave me an idea for a whole series of videos! How to mill brass covered in cat hair, how to blue steel covered in cat hair, how to powdercoat small parts covered in cat hair, etc.
That’s all my videos 😂 If you look closely you will very often see a stray cat hair on my parts in closeup
I have 8 cats in the house. The whole trick for me is to not mill or drill or turn a cat instead of the work I wanted to do.
@@oldfarthacksI expect they're somewhat difficult to hold in a vise or chuck.
Cats are generally taking care of us
Does Sprocket look at you funny when you say "That's what separates us from the animals"? What a cute helper!
Given that Sprocket is a cat, probably no more than in any other circumstance, they know they're the one who is really in charge.
How dare you blame Sprocket for purring in the background, when it was obviously you, being so pleased with yourself. >_> 😂😹
Cat Lib
Sprocket did a wonderful job supervising the voice over!!
"not expecting any large rocks or birds in the water tank" ... so, are you expecting small birds in your water tank?
What is a bug if not a small bird? 🤔
Small birds are attracted to the coal fire and help feed the crew. It’s the circle of life.
@@Blondihacks
Yep even more so when the engine is humming along, it attracts humming birds.
@@Blondihacks plus: they taste like chicken.
Extra bonus: you have a coal fire to cook them on! And there’s also steam available if any of the birds happen to be carrying some broccoli and/or carrots.
"Good enough" God damn, Quinn, you kill me sometimes.
"Good enough", the secret of good engineers
Beautiful job on the hand pump, Quinn! I had the same issue with the travel of the pump handle and had to do the same thing - file out the slots in the linkage. And the same issue with the o-ring retainer. My solution for this was to open up the hole for the ram a little bit so that the deformation from tightening the set secrew didn't impede the movement of the ram. Your solution is much more elegant though! Thanks for sharing the struggles you have with the design too. Thats one of the things that sets your channel above the others. It's real! I appreciate that! 😊
"Put a chamfer on because it separates us from the animals" made me snort!!! I love your humor! Keep up the good work!
As a former film technician, I always feel a tinge of sadness when I hear “Sprocket”…have a look at old film camera movements, the machining is superb, and the whole ‘sprocket” thing will always be evocative for a generation of film folks😢❤
Film is certainly not dead!
I'm pumped to see this all assembled and working
I see what you did there :P
Living up to the name. 😂
Me too, but I don't want to put any pressure on her.
Hobby machining - I make parts for fun using all my cool toys.
Sometimes I make a part twice so I can have double the fun.
If I’m really ‘enjoying’ the process I might even make the part more than twice for compound fun 😂
Yaaay. My weekly treat. Thank You Quinn.
*"I'll just YATZZIE it off of the end!"*
Nice change up! 😁
“Yatzzie!” Adverb
“Yatzzie it off” Verb
“Yatzzifier” Noun
Nice work, I never would have thought you were around in the 80s
Same here. I figured she was a good 10-15 years younger - maybe late 30's.
Thank you for the warning at the beginning. I can deal with regular purring, but rogue purring frightens me when I'm unprepared for it.😂
I had a reverse Tuxedo Cat. (Black-capped ears and tail, white body) and Casey NEVER purred, That is common with these cats.
I find the inconsistent timing of the 'aaaaand yatzee' very amusing! Some other time you could just keep it in the 'aaaaaaaaaand' and then just cut to the next scene, just to confuse us hahahah
I think half my audience would ragequit if I did that 😀
17:31, comedy gold, I didn't see that coming.
17:28 the pump lever arm is a really attractive part ❤
For accurate groove spacing, I've cut the first groove, zeroed the DRO and then used the grooving tool to pull the stock out of the chuck the required distance.
That mesh is what I'd file under suitable for screening out AN bolts and small children 😉
Ahh, Quinn, you don't know how happy you've made me tonight! Tomorrow is my birthday, and today we got a yahtzee, as is tradition, tappy-tap-tap, separates us from the animals AND the Employee of The Month: Sprocket!
Happy birthday! 🥳
Any and all included purring, rogue or otherwise, is a bonus. :D
I got a second opinion on milling stainless without chain drilling first from Clubber Lang. His prediction: pain.
Mediocritas: the Greek god of "good enough".
Kittys make the best assistants!
Excellent!
I love the tiny parts.
Thanks, and Meow to Sprocket.
I do appreciate your honesty when you don’t have to because of editing. In my machinist days, I made a pile of scrap metal that my boss didn’t know about 👍
Robertson screws and caribou quarters 🇨🇦

Beautiful job on the 'secret pump!
The tender is shaping up nicely. I'm really looking forward to the engine.
Me too ! 😅
Sprocket 😍
Quinn you spoil us with the quality of your work, both editing and machining and now this, a purring background to voice overs?!
If you or any native English speaking person reads this, a genuine question, why are steel balls from a ball bearing called ball bearings, shouldn't it be bearing ball or steel ball?
Perfect to wake up and have this in my shop. Saturday mornin' solderin'.
Coins that are about the same size as the Canadian quarter shown in this video include:
• the US quarter
• the UK 10p
• the Euro 50c
• the New Zealand 50c
• the Australian 10c
The thing I love about your video's Quinn is that your willing to show that some times you don't have to be perfect, some times you mess up and that's.. well ok because its how we learn and you show the various little things that might be 'gotcha's' like people not understanding that square tangs might not go into a slightly curved slots etc.
Also Sprockets just making certain the Humans doing things right.
Thank you, Quinn, now I am all PUMPED UP!
9:16 ... Maximum pucker! :)
just lovely, again! Careful or I'll expect this level of joyful watching every time.
You're getting very good at this.
You’re awesome Quinn ❤️
Perhaps in a few years, you'll be on par with This Old Tony....then you just put that short part in the lathe, run it in reverse, throw old chips at it, and wha-laa....your part is now longer!
I'm a recovering technical illustrator and I have to say how much I love the dimetric and trimetric projection illustrations in Kozo's plans. You just don't see that stuff these days. Which is weird because doing it digitally is stupid simple compared to how I learned with pencil and paper back when the earth was cooling. Thanks for the video. Sprocket can come visit me anytime. 🤣
Great video ! Thanks Quinn !!
Thankyou 👍
I love this project, I've learned a lot about model engineering. If I may make a suggestion, if you don't have a 5C collet for your lathe you could use your square collet block in a four jaw. Obviously you got away with it but in the future it may help?
Chuck is way too small for that
24:30 very satisfying!
As a firearms accessories designer, I think I would have secured the bushing in place with a cross-pin.
Love the 'Good Enough!' fanfare...
Awesomeness Extreme!
Purrrrrrrrrr purrrrrrrrrrrr
Great job
awesome! love this build.
Great!
We require more kitteh!
Great video Quinn!
I love Secret Pump!!! I’m guessing the weird intake is probably purely meant to be more “historically accurate”, despite the scale difference, right? In any case, I sure hope it stays bird-free well enough for ye!!! Haha!
Pretty cool
If I was invited to change something in this pump, maybe I would change that brass o’ring retainer, with a external thread design, not using that small screw. Despite of this, pristine work, amazing results, as always!
My wife and I are fortunate enough to live with a 14+-ish year old cat. She puts up with us in a well mannered cat way, We have a regular live with us dog as well, and currently, we have my daughter's dog as well, while she is reuning with some friends.
Now, back to the video. Thank you, I watch each week and look forward to seeing you riding on this machine that you are making.
Tack!
a purrr-fect video
Work close to the chuck, low speeds and feeds, flowers and chocolate.
Got it
Gosh, I could put your videos on the background while I work.
I for one welcome our new Sprocket Overlord!
LoL I enjoyed your good enough on the rounded end of the handle. According to my performance in my own shop today, if I ever go pro, I'm going to have to name it " Close Enough Inc.". My conscience would never let me have a peaceful night sleep again if I named it anything else. 😁
Wonderful project! Probably too late, but I would suggest a chamfer at the top of the internal pump lever and (if you can) at the very end of the handle. It'll just make mounting the handle more satisfying.
Just wonderful. Hey it's actually easy to accurately cut rod while it's spinning using a hand hacksaw and fine blade. Takes a practice cut or two to get the hang of starting the cut where you want it, but then Bob's your uncle. Now who says that?🙂
Pixel art for video games in the 80's !? Hey, hello fellow veteran games artist :)
Hello Quinn..I have followed all of your videos on the construction of the Switcher. Are you in the process of completing the Engine. Looking forward to watching the Engine run. Thanks for your content. Ron
Always a learning experience! Great job! I can't wait to see the final results 😁
A little food coloring in a syringe squirted near the intake cone could have helped visualize the flow, at least until the dye mixed thoroughly.
Very cool. I've watched this entire series. Nice work.
Very impressive and always entertaining. That is going to be some cool steam locomotive!
Do you think a simple anti-vortex plate, soft soldered around the base of the inverted funnel, would help the pump pick up water by preventing it from sucking air at low water levels?
Quinn, when you machine metal it give me real Quonfidence to try turning metal myself.
Awesome 👍👍
My wife would like you to know that she would be pleased for you and Sprocket to narrate audiobooks.
Quite a good idea, actually. 🤔
Thanks Quinn
Quinn - please write a children’s book about how a bird gets caught in a water tank. And a rock….😅
As always excellent work, your videos are always enjoyable thank you
WOW !!! Do you have patience !
By chance, would Loctite work on that bushing? A low strength version that could be removed with a small amount of heat when needing to replace the O-ring?
I'd like to see more "Sprocket".....👍🙂
How many times have you been recording your intro and said "my name is blondihacks" because that's something I would do SO MANY TIMES.
Too kewl! It looks good and works great :)
This tanker is looking colossal. Thank you for posting. It is amazing the things one can accomplish with not every tool available. Your dollar investment is a lot larger than what I have and I like the manual machining. Who wants to watch someone building the with a CNC Hass with the closed door? Watch out for excess cat fur.
Very neat job as usual!
yay!
No apologies needed. Any rogue Sprocket purring is absolutely appreciated.
Wonderful video, and execution of the process. One thing that would help me as someone who does not know design specs or machinging - try showing completed parts and how they mesh together clip before the actual machining of said parts, so I can follow along. Showing them after is the usual MO of most videos, and I wonder why ??
Your creating something beautiful and functional and so what could be better ? Cheers
Yeah, seeing the finished parts laid out might be a bit more satisfying at the beginning, but a YT creator should test the effect on total views and view length before just doing what viewers request. Worth a test, I guess.
Nicely done.👍😎
Imagine the smell of filling the water tank with last month's dead bird in there.
Note to self: replace bird at least monthly.
Your chamfering tool is better than most peoples forming tools, so no worries there.
Quinn great pump
I know codes differ around the world but "using the tender hand pump to pressurise the boiler" makes me wonder?
For the set screw, can you turn a V-groove in the collar and use either a pointed set screw or a square groove with a dog nose set screw?
So cool
Pixel Circle counters, represent!
I jokingly curse you every time I see Abomb79 or Kieth Rucker or whoever parting something off because I always say or think YAHTZEE !!! 😂
So many non family friendly jokes could be made about the comment: “The slot is not the prettiest thing in the world due to the amount of hand work that I had to do at the end there, but it will certainly be functional.”
But I will refrain because I respect Quinn and this channel - but oh, the teenager in me is screaming right now.
LOL
❤
New drinking game. Take a shot every time she says 316😂
Drinking games on my channel are generally fatal, fair warning. I do tend to repeat myself so drinking games are very dangerous. Usually fatal.
Iv been watching your videos for years. It wasn’t a dig. Keep up the good work!!
