A Review Of 3 Super Cool Vintage Watches - Omega Seamaster 166.088 - Seiko Pogue 6139 - 1940s Stowa

- Today I review and take a closer look at three killer vintage watches. First up is the retro early 70s "baby blue" automatic Omega Seamaster 166.088 120m diving watch I recently acquired. Secondly, I take a look at not just one, but two Seiko 6139 Pogues. These hugely iconic Japanese chronographs were not only the first Seiko automatic chronographs but the first automatics to make it into space. Last but by no means least is a stunningly elegant and classy Stowa Bauhaus inspired manual wind piece from the 1940s.

I love my Pogue. I got mine as a Christmas gift in either '78 or '79. As I was either 11 or 12 yrs old, I had no idea of the significance of the timepiece. I just thought it looked cool !! Luckily mine is in great shape !!
Every watch I have bought, I have bought it after watching your video. You got me into watches. cheers bro.
That makes my day to hear that. I hope they bring you much enjoyment.
Thank you sir!
Best regards,
TGV
Found one of these washed up on the beach when I was 5 years old, estimated to have been underwater for 6 months & still working perfectly. Dad wore it for years & passed it down to me, I'll pass it to my eldest son when the time is right.
I enjoyed your video! My dad wore a Seiko 6139-6005 when I was just a little one and I remember the watch fondly. Recently he gave the watch to me and I had it serviced and replaced the crystal with a NOS one. What an absolute stunning watch! I have since become obsessed with watches and I find myself watching a lot of TH-cam watch videos, soaking up as much information as I can. I love the fact that you can find the appeal in an old Timex watch and talk about watches that are in a completely different league.
I completely agree with what you said at the end about the character of vintage watches. They are not top of the line anymore but they still keep time like a champ and look classy as hell.
Ugh... I so want that Seiko Pogue with gold colored dial. So wish Seiko reissues the Pogue. This is one of your best reviews (with history of the watch).
My father owned, now mine, the 6139-6002 but with a Navy Blue face.
The Seamaster line is impressive. Doesn't matter from what period it is, they are all so beautiful!
EXCELLENT point my friend,
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
I thought the Pogue was a bit ugly until I listened to the back story and now I'm in love with it's uniqueness. It's like if the Bee Gees were working at NASA. Fab video.
The Stowa is a very handsome watch... very nice piece for a nice, laidback and dry, sunny weekend drive...
Totally agree,
Thank you Neuro,

Thanks for such an awesome video. My "Pogue" should arrive in 2 days. Found a 6139-6005 that is in decent shape!
Love that Seiko. Thanks for sharing TGV!
Thank you James :D

Modern watches can be very good, but the right vintage watch in good condition is always a classic and a treasure. My pick of these 3 is the little Stowa with the Arabic numerals, sub-seconds dial and slender hand set. Having said that the Omega and Seiko Pogue have history and quality on their side. A great video from you. Thanks again.
Such a fun video! When buying a new timepiece, it's as easy to ignore the heritage of an old house as it is to appreciate it. But going vintage forces us to truly study the history of the piece. A next-level pursuit for the watch enthusiast! Wonderful examples, all three.
hi man, nice video i got an old seiko 6139-6012, blue dial. It was my father's watch. it's simply amazing, very resistant but the pogue...dear lord, it's astonishing
wow, 3 trues dream watches, that blue!! that yellow gold and the shapes of the cases!! 😍
true class and simplicity
So glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you :D

Grandfather's mystery watch found + cancer convalescent help!!! While looking at/ dreaming about the Rolex 116622 Yacht Master (blue dial), I was fortunate to come across the Urban Gentry Channel. This channel has been instrumental in my recovery as I went through 6 weeks of radiation and slowly start recovering from curable throat cancer. When I viewed this video, I was shocked to see my Grandfather's WW2 watch that he acquired for a pack of smokes at the end of the war from a German officer POW. The watch has no brand on the dial or back. He wore this watch for the rest of his life and I was left the watch 25 years ago. The Unitas watch in the video is almost an exact match for the watch and certainly the military history corresponds correctly. Thanks for helping identifying my Grandfather's watch and much more for helping me get through the toughest event of my life. I will be a life long fan.
The omega is the definition of less is more.. The blue hand is gorgeous
Very well said, thank you Amro.
Best regards,
TGV
Right, finished the old video, now to this one
I have anxiously awaited this Seamaster review and I must say, it is Absolutely Gorgeous in every way! I have really never had a Grail watch but I need to have one of these! I only have one watch and have, until now, never wanted any other! What a stunning piece!! Thanks for taking the time to give it such a proper review!
Wow what a flashback. The Seiko Pogue 6139 was my first Seiko that I bought after getting a part time job in high school. I bought it at a military PX in Hawaii (Army brat here). I loved that watch and regret selling it to a friend on a neighbor island as they were not available there.
Hi TGV - I always love your video's on vintage pieces as almost half my collection is vintage now. The Stowa is a beautiful example. Best Regards, John
I had a feeling you would like this one ;-)
Thank you John,
Best regards,
TGV
Best advice with Seiko 6139 is to leave the chronograph running. Acts as running seconds and stops the clutch from wearing out. Once the clutch goes, you need a donor movement - no spare parts left out there. Pogue looked good on the wrist. Great stuff TGV, loved it.
Thank you for that info.
Love the Omega!
Thank you Sam ::D
Best regards,
TGV
That Stowa almost made my heart stop! It's breathtaking
Great to see a Stowa on the show. Great little house. My first watch was a Stowa Ikarus with a blued hand that pops.
Love vintage reviews - thanks for the video Tristano.
A pleasure Arthur, I hope you are well my friend.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry I love my Pogue. I got mine for Christmas in either '78 or '79. As I was either 11 or 12 yrs old I had no idea about the significance of the timepiece. I just thought it looked cool ! Luckily, mine is in great shape !!!
I absolutely love your watch reviews, fantastic information delivered in a classy and enthusiastic style.
I always enjoy watching what you've created here on your channel. Best of all you appreciate watches for what they are and represent, from the $30.00 Timex, to high end luxury pieces. It's great that you've got such great access to so many different pieces to give us/you the content that I really enjoy watching.
Keep up the great work, all the best.
Regards,
Chris
So, I'm having my dad's 6139 from '72 repaired at the moment and I can't think of anyone better to ask about what Nato to use... I'll keep the bracelet around but as a desk worker typing all day the nato bands are really all I can do without hurting my wrist or having to take off the watch. What do you think? I'm leaning towards either gray or blue.
Great stuff. That Seamaster is stunning, coolest second hand ever.
Thank you Mike :D
I struggle to think of a cooler second hand myself ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Great show and knowledge, TGV! Big compliment!
Really loved the wrist-watch check! It shows, yet again, that you don't have to spend big dollars to own a classy and beautiful watch to enhance one's looks.
Thank you Alexandru, I could not agree more!
Best regards,
TGV
Stunning watches. That Stowa though, wow what a beautiful watch.
Great video, Tristano. I agree, each of these pieces has their own charm. Makes one wonder if in 30, 40, 50 years from now if watches purchased today will be equally charming or iconic. Thx for the review.
Those are 3 excellent choices for this show. Thanks for sharing.
That Stowa really is pure class. Literally, everything else has been stripped away and what is left is class. Perfect. That Seiko dial is just the kind I get crushes on. I almost bought a badly worn Orient just because it had an outrageously pink dial. That is almost as shocking.
esa062 Buy a Pogue and the crush becomes everlasting love.
Top drawer as ever..couldn't get a cigarette paper between any of them, absolutely lovely!
Thanks TGV
Holy Cow that vintage Seiko Pogues is a thing of 70s style and beauty! Thank you for taking the time to really explain the watch, it's provenance and it's unique history. Can a watch posses a manly sex appeal of it's own? In this case you've shown that it certainly can.
Where do you come up with this stuff? Utterly informative, entertaining and enjoyable.
Fantastic vid, as always. That could be, indeed, a 3 watch collection, with the diver, the chrono and the dress pieces, with the added bonus of vintage charm. Impeccable good taste, Guv. Cheers
Very clever Carlos, I didn't even think of that!!!
Thank you my friend, well observed.
Best regards,
TGV
Great video! Beautiful timepieces! My Wonderful Wife recently gifted me a 6139 6000 proof june 69 blue face. It's got a couple scratces on the crystal, but shows no other signs of being 51 yrs old.
Wow. Thank you for the mention, I appreciate it. A customer told me about it this morning. Yes, Pogue's actual watch was a 6139-6005 with dial marking "Water 70m Resist". His was made in August 1971.
What an honour! I adore your channel, thank you so much for stopping by.
Keep up the great work my friend, thank you.
Best regards,
TGV
I'm glad you like my channel! Coming from a big yt guy that's quite the nod. I appreciate it. A customer told me about it this morning as I was trying to figure out why my email traffic had doubled with new watch servicing inquiries. By the way, I am uploading a video I just made, inspired by yours, I give a shout out to you in it. Hopefully it's useful. It lays out what is a true Pogue. Thanks again. If ever you wish to chat, feel free to email or skype.
You both have great reviews. I just watched a couple of yours Spencer, and am soon to receive my April '69 notched case 'proof' dial Pogue. Can't wait.
I absolutely love the Seamaster. So unique. So classy. It's easy to buy an Omega that EVERYONE has. This shows actual taste.
My Dad just gave me a Seiko 6139 that has a black face with black and red bezel. It is not currently running and has some good scuffs in the bezel. I discovered Spencer Klein in colorado, who has been recommended for service, but wonder if you might recommend another watchmaker for service that is nearer to Vancouver? Thanks for the excellent videos. You are a true gentleman and a delight to listen too.
fell in love three times watching this video... the Stowa at the end is absolutely gorgeous.
TGV... love the fact that you appreciate all sorts of watches, be it an Omega or a $30 Timex.
I Argentina that golden-faced chrono was sold as the 007, allegedly because Bond had worn it on a movie. One of the most coveted chronos of the 70s. Love your channel TGV; you speak in a manner we foreigner have no problem understanding, unlike lots of your cockney-talking, fellow countrymen. Although I had to give up collecting watches to keep up my main hobby, audio, I spend hours watching your reviews. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
Great video! There is so much character with vintage watches. You made a very good point about the water resistance with vintage watches. I recommend a pressure test after new gaskets are installed to give you that piece of mind. I lost a watch once due to old gaskets that no longer sealed out water.
Thank you Sean, greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
I love the sheer simplicity of the Stowa especially the hands. In fact i'd go as far to say that the hands are the most beautiful i've seen on a vintage piece.
Thank you Stephen, hard not to fall in love with her right?! ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
Love, love vintage. Logic says, every collection needs one 'keeper' pre-1980's piece - if you ask me.
Love that idea!
Thank you Taylor :D
Best regards,
TGV
I like the Stowa very much! Keep up the awesome reviews!
Another great video, TGV.
That Seamaster is most aesthetic diver I've ever seen.
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
Love this video, can't get over that Seamaster it's believable!
Thank you Dieter, so glad :D
Best regards,
TGV
Great video mate. Great selection. That Seiko blew me away.
Amen! I second your emotions. It is missing the point to compare such vintage pieces with more contemporary examples. Would you compare a pre-war Rolls Royce with a 2017 vehicle? I would hope not. Therein lies the appeal; the magic. An oft missing glimpse into another era. An all too rare opportunity to experience and appreciate where we've been and where we are now. Keep 'em coming, Tristano! Bravissimo. Is that a word?
Another great video Tristano, nice you did an overview rather than a full in depth review this time. All extremely iconic pieces and all desirable in their own right. My Seiko Pogue stood up well to close scrutiny, surprisingly so and I thank you for doing it justice. May be you will do a full review of the Pogue some time; I for one think it's too an important a piece not to? The 6139 movement was arguably the first automatic chronograph to be released to general sale and it's not commonly known they are vertical clutch column wheel movements too; both features are extremely desirable even to this day. For interest, the Pogue you demonstrated here runs accuracy at -8 seconds per day; incredible for a 46 year old time piece!
Keep up the great work TGV and very best wishes.
Thank you my friend, just sorry it took so long!
I should be shipping it off to you soon ;-)
WOW -8 is really not bad at all.
Best regards,
TGV
Like the crown on the Pogue, the 2 o'clock arming button on a Seiko Bellmatic advances the date when pushed.
Not sure if the feature is unique to Seiko but it makes it very easy to adjust the date on shorter months. No need to pull out a crown to first position and remembering which direction to turn.
That gorgeous Stowa defines elegant simplicity. It appears to be in pristine condition, remarkable for a watch from the 1940s. It really is a lovely watch.
Here I am again commenting before the video has ended... Worst case scenario I'll just make 2 comments!
Love to see the old intro make a come back TGV! Keep up the great vids :D!
Thank you William :D
Best regards,
TGV
Seiko 6139 Pogue is defo on my wish list.
Love your videos so much, I have just started my own watch collection! For my 15 birthday,I have a Rotary skeleton watch and at the minute it is own a red, white and blue NATO strap and I have also just bought a Seiko Chronograph 100m
Fantastic! Great choice Joel, enjoy the collecting journey!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
The Stowa! Uber-cool and perfect size!
Very good overview, TGV!
I actually have a Pogue that was given to me by my Father. Originally I wanted to refurbish the whole thing but I have since decided to leave it as is. What do you think I should do if anything to it?
Any advice on where to find a excellent condition Seiko Pogue I've been hunting one and all that seems to turn up on eBay are ones with not original straps or white inner bezels
That Stowa is stunning in its simplicity
I have a Seiko 6138 8030. I think that the Seiko automatic chronographs from 70s are very beautiful and great timepieces.
That Stowa is gorgeous. They really ought to add something like that to their contemporary offerings.
I can imagine a perlon strap on that Stowa. Absolutely beautiful timepiece... it's true what they say: sometimes less is more.
That Stowa is stunning!
Given that the pogue is now difficult to find and expensive, would you buy the Seiko Ssa329K1, the 'pogue tribute'?
That vintage Seamaster is just beautiful!
Awesome Video sir!
All of them are great, specially the fourth one that owned by some one in nasa before. But the stowa is another.realy nicely built that i think it needs more specific care in a collection.
Three belters right there, but wow, that Stowa really stole the show, simply beautiful.
Thank you Anthony :D
I have to agree with you there, it's classiness is timeless.
Best regards,
TGV
I have a Stowa arriving Tuesday this week though not a vintage, big departure for me as I'm 99% a diver guy.
WOW, congrats, I am sure you will LOVE it,
Their quality is amazing. May I ask which one?
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Marine Auto, polished case, white dial with top version ETA upgrade. (old logo 2014). I'm just about to upload some pics to the fb group once I get the sellers permission to use his photos so keep your eyes peeled, it's a beauty.
the pogue is cool. I seem to remember seeing someone wear one back in the day.
Bauhaus or not, that Stowa is a stunning little watch. I do like your Seamaster - love the 70s look of it. Definitely of it's period. And the honey yellow on those Seikos - wow! A fun video TGV. Thanks for sharing those cool watches. Ciao, John
Thank you John :D
Best regards,
TGV
Love all of them, but love Stowa the most. That Stowa got its design inspiration from a 1924 Lange & Söhne. Then Stowa start producing the Bauhaus model from 1927. Nicely done TGV!
excellent video, a real treat!
Thank you Donn :D
Best regards,
TGV
this episode gives me a second chance to propose the subject of vintage 70 digital watches pre gschock era like the texas instruments, hewlett packard (both with red led digits) and the citizen digi ana from the early 80s
Hi,
There is a seamaster same as on videofor sale but the 2 oclock indicator is not and there is no service history. However, I maybe can get it for 422 USD of or less. should I buy it?
Thanks
Cedric
I bought a new Seamaster 120 in Switzerland in 1971. Mine is a 165.027 with the 552 movement (no date complication). I bought it new in the box but it might have been a late 1960s model. Mine had the heads of rice bracelet that fell apart decades ago. I didn't know any better and discarded it. My bezel looks a lot different from yours, recessed below the crystal and has a lume pip at the zero marker. Uninterrupted coin edge.
Great review. love the Seamaster. I have a couple Vostoks with the same case, like that retro look.
I can confirm that the Bill Pogue Seiko is a 6139-6005 with serial no 190945
Good of you to mention this since the myths regarding this being a 6002 are so widely spread
Enjoyed the review, I've got the 6139-6001 with a silver dial from November 1970. I'm going to have it serviced for it's 50th birthday. By the way when you press to change the date, if you press a little harder it will also change the day mine has the choice between English and Japanese days. I wear it every day I probably should take better care of it.
That Stowa is my kind of watch . Very handsome .
Good video TGV, but will you do a buyer's guide for the Seiko Pogue? Tracking down reliable information with clear reference pictures is difficult to say the least, and certainly tedious. I would definitely hope to see such a video from you!
another great video keep up the good work!
Thank you Will :D
Best regards,
TGV
Amazing episode!
Really enjoyable, beautiful watches.
Hi TGV
Ticking all the main boxes vintage style...
This really makes up a little collection for the person who cares for having something different. You're right; it's charming beyond criticism.
I suppose that the Seiko has the opportunity for manual winding??? I can't see how it would work in weightless conditions as a automatic watch only.
Keep up he good work. Stunning and very interesting video👍
Thank you Kjeld,
Great question about winding, as far as I know it honest have it so god knows how it would wind in space, I guess it just does! LOL
Best regards,
TGV
I have a March '72 Pogue 6319-6002 with resist text, the first Pogue you showed is a July '71 and the second Pogue you showed can be dated July '72.
Hi TGV,
Nothing against the Omega and the Seiko but - the Stowa rocks! It's amazing to find such immaculate NOS examples of an over 70 year old watch!
Best regards,
Claus
Just got my first vintage watch! 1955 Longines. A bit like the Stowa.
You took your Alien critter out of the package!
Haha, I just had to!!!
Thank you Steve,
Best regards,
TGV
Hey TGV,
Another great video!! Quick question, what brand Perlon strap do you have on that Timex and what brands do you recommended?
Best Regards,
Dexter
Thank you Dexter, I did a video review on them, links should be there.
I got mine from Wrist Candy Watch Club,
Best regards,
TGV
That Omega is amazing ... I'm in love with it !
The blue Nato is really nice, but I think on a brown one it would really enhance the blue of the second hand ;-)
Thank you SA :D
Best regards,
TGV
I’m with you on the nato straps they just look great, even though I’ve only got one lol
Hi TGV,
Can you paste a link of the channel mentioned at the time 13:32?
Thanks.
Love the reworked pharcyde intro!!!
Well spotted Alberto :D
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
i been trying to find a 6139 that is in decent shape but cant seem to find a decent one.
