Hi, I’m K-Lowe, from the TH-cam channel, K-Lowe, and I want to tell you a story. A story that only a select few might still remember. But a story so integral to my childhood that I would go as far as to say that the day this took place, was one of; if not, the best day of my life. I want to tell you a story… About the best Minecraft update ever made, how this update developed, and the deep mid-2010s culture surrounding it that sometimes lead to more confusion than good. This is the story of 4J Studios’ Title Update 31.

I just hope 4j stdios gets to do minecraft again.
Because the fact that 4j studios can update the multiple minecraft versions while also adding dlcs and stuff

When this update dropped, it felt like Christmas day. I can't begin to explain my excitement of loading up this update on my PS3 and watching ibxtoycat break down all the new features on his channel
we're actually twins fr. We had a family ps3, and I was the one who told all my brothers about the update when it came out. I remember those Tu31 videos being a few hours old, now there 8 and a half years old 😭
You know it's good when Title Update 31 sounds like a bill to be passed by the government, therefore, it's a political video, therefore, Joe Biden is gonna boost it himself and it's gonna get 3.6 million views.
I just recently found my old xbox 360, and when i looked on my games i found the old minecraft game. Got to play my old worlds i made when i was like 8 years old. Was amazing nostalgia, great video Lowe!

When 21:49 in the video started.. it felt so surreal. I'm a teenager at the time but legacy console and PE were my starters for Minecraft. The way you described looking back.. I did and it honestly made me a shed a tear. Now, I'm probably not near when you started. Though I always enjoy legacy more then the modern. Same goes for java which I never experienced until later in life. Playing old versions of java and playing 360 edition and one in 2023, heck even split-screening with my little brother who never really got to play before the updates ended truly felt wonderful. Heck I even split-screened with my own dad who got to experience minecraft 360 when it first came out! I just wanted to say thank you for this video and the part where you talked so openly and deeply. Thank you.

@@K-LoweIndeed, it may have seem like a random video to many. Though the deeper you go the more you understand this time was different. The game is different. I also feel as if youtube is more then a platform to upload media. More as like a place to sympathize with the media and to understand it feels like it means more. Comment sections are versatile to send feedback, but can also send a message on how certain points felt and relate to yourself. Heck even share memories of yours. It’s what makes youtube truly special.

I always thought console never had unlimited worlds due to console power.

The “speed of Java edition updating”, this stopped after 1.7. It started getting really slow in 2014.
Yeah, Console Edition and also even Pocket Edition were able to catch up because Java went through development hell so-to-speak with 1.9 taking about a year.
Doing all this on a non monetized video makes it even better

TU31 was my fav Minecraft console update since it’s the one I started with, but it’s tutorial world was the best out of all of them
I am about to cry. Also I just realized, I missed tu 30 by a few days. My Xbox 360 was not connected to Xbox live so I didn't recieve any updates, meaning I was stuck in tu11 for more than a year. And on Chirstmas 2015 I got Xbox live access. I litterally didn't get to know the old tutorial worlds between, but it was still very nice looking back

I started playing minecraft xbox just 2 days before TU31's release, I remember being so excited to try all the new features, such beautiful times.
Have you seen the backups/jailbroken versions? There still being made and they have things like custom textures and worlds. I just think its cool legacy is still alive.

Incredibly underrated video. Brought back memories of waiting for new updates (update aquatic), though I started much later after TU46.

I remember TU31, I deleted my brothers tutorial World because he renamed it “Clan Island” and didn’t let me do anything
Hot take: I hated the ice spike biome when it was first introduced and still don’t like anything about it to this day, it’s just a huge empty space of nothing but polar bears and obstacles for a boat right now :/

@@K-Lowe visually it’s cool, the idea is cool too and that I respect, however the fact that 90% of the time it’s a ginormous space on the world that is annoying to use for builds, bad for gathering materials and really should only be used as an ice source reinforces my opinion that we should be able to toggle which biomes can load in a world

I just realized TU31 was the first version i played when i got Xbox one edition as a Christmas gift in 2015. I still think of those fond christmas day memories playing through the tutorial world, overjoyed to be free from the limitations of pocket edition. Even when I saw the world border, instead of thinking "aw man these worlds are tiny", I just thought about how cool it was to see the world's edge :)
I still love legacy console edition to this day because of the incredible polish and care 4J gave the game that bedrock completely misses the mark on. Bedrock just feels soulless, and corporate. Legacy console felt like it's developers truly loved Minecraft and wanted to make the best console experience possible for the game, and that's why I still love it over bedrock, despite it having far more content that legacy had.

Small correction about the coding language of console edition. From what I’ve heard, only the Xbox 360 edition was in C#. All the other ones were C++. Also, I’m not even entirety sure if they “rewrote the entire game from scratch” since, I’ve heard theories that the original Xbox 360 version (but not the updates after) were just Java edition’s code literally converted to C# (or C++) with a bunch of modifications.

@@K-Lowe Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition's original release was enough of a direct port that it even had the Steve Co. Supply Crate April Fools block that predates the release, with full functionality (lighting and despawning), whether it was converted manually or actually over to C# or C++, it's definitely 1-to-1.
I understand that you prefer Legacy because of nostalgia etc...
But I got my cousin who onky played Java, and he played both Legacy and Bedroc, but he preferred Legacy, as in his words:
"The camera in Bedrock is shit, the whole game feels unstable, and the crafting in the controller is annoying, also this other version has epic minigames that are like servers built in, but has less updates so idk"

I dont prefer legacy over Java. I'm not blinded my nostalgia, but I do prefer legacy over bedrock. Because it's objectively a more well crafted and stable game
They were also working on Wii U Edition during this same year of TU25 and TU31.
Oh yeah you mention it, I think Wii U Edition might've been why TU25 was a small update, and TU31 was the big update since they were working on both the update and Wii U Edition. TU25 also included every single item and block, which data miners found in the files. The new biomes just likely weren't ready.
Legacy Minecraft is the reason I play Java on version 1.8.9.
It's more like the good old Minecraft on Xbox, simple features, simple items, simple blocks.
You don't have as many blocks to decorate your builds with which means that you have to get more creative with what you have.
It's a little kickstart for you creativity - if you can build awesome builds with limited assets, you'll be able to do even better with many more in newer editions.
But not just building, PvP is also pretty nice. The way you can just spam click monsters and mobs as well as other players makes it so much more fun than the versions with cooldown. It's a lot like the old console editions, just without the minigames and skin packs. I love the old Minecraft, the old textures although they're uglier than the new ones. But that doesn't make them better.
There is this charm that Minecraft lost over the years...

i still have legacy ps4 edition because i got the disc during/before tu3X, and now whenever i boot up the game theres an option on the menu to go back to the final update of the legacy version of the game

There is a version of minecraft legacy (I think title update 13 or 12 im not sure) but if you had a second controller and a second account you could do something weird
If you go offline and go into tu 13 or 12 (just find the disc with that version and delete the updated version to get tu 12 or 13) then you want to make a new world grab items that would effect players and put them in a chest (for experiments) and you want to build an end portal frame then go into survival and then make player 2 join in and make them go up high and make them jump in but as they are about to enter make them leave the game (like just as they are about to enter) and if the game chat says player left the game and after that it said player entered the end then you did it you summoned a broken player also you might want to join and leave then sign in on different accounts then make them leave to actually make the player visible (this is not fake me and my friend accidentally did this we didn’t know that would happen) the player itself is player 2 but isn’t at the same time now if you want the player in the overworld you do the same thing its more complicated for some reason I don’t know why

This update changed legacy Minecraft made it a whole new game and made it feel more like PC
remember when we use to think the next big thing was gonna be mods on console and then they fired 4J shortly after and then came now and we still dont have mods, we have the behaviour and resource packs but not mods.
Funny enough from what I hear a lot of the consoles of the time minus the xbox one and ps4 were RISC based so at the core the legacy consoles use the same base architecture which is then modified for the companies needs

Dude... I remember TU31 so much... It came out on my sister's birthday AND it was the same day Star Wars The Force Awakens released. I was young and I thought that the ambience sounded like Chewbacca, lol. This was a seriously good video, thank you for reminding me of this. 🥲🥲🥲
Legacy Minecraft on the ps4 got me thru my divorce. Even tho ive been playing on pc since about 2009-2010, the ps4 was just much more accessible to me at the time.

Legacy Console Edition was made in C++, not C#.
You're not wrong, but also not right. Minecraft Xbox 360 edition was ported to C++ when the later editions came out, but from what I can see (especially on old minecraft forms), it was originally coded for the Xbox 360 in C#. Sorry if that was a little confusing
@@K-Lowe C# wouldn't really be possible for gamedev on the 360 unless if you're using Unity. The other issue is how would TU's be able to work if the TU's were made in a different programming language then the base update
@@archimax08C# was standard on Xbox 360 with C++, I'm not super informed on programing languages outside of Java and python, so idk
@@archimax08 Actually afaik there was a framework released by Microsoft called XNA which allowed for cross-platform development of games in C# that could run on both the 360 and Windows.

Forgotten? I remember it crystal clear... The first real Minecraft I played on Xbox 360 had this. Before that, I was speed running the demo stuck on TU1/TU2 even before it was a thing
TU31 IS DEEMED FORGOTTEN? It's literally my favourite preferred version of minecraft which SUUUCKS because it's so impossible to play nowadays unless you already have the update data.

Well, of course it's possible, it's possible on the 360 too. The only reason it doesn't is because of storage space for saves. If you molded the games, you could theoretically, but that's outside of the scope of the video
