I have been pretty thirsty, once. Hiking in the mountains in East Tennessee, I ran out of water one evening. I hiked down ~2000 feet elevation to a fast running creek and filled my water containers. Then hiked back up to the ridge. Thirsty, by now... On this occasion, long ago, I had iodine tablets for purification. 30 minutes passed and I am quite thirsty but though the water might be safe to drink, it is quite unfit to drink. Next morning... still as unfit as the previous evening. I could not eat because I could not drink. My tongue was glued to the roof of my mouth and I was 10 miles from my car. Three days later, I read that a little vitamin C would clear excess iodine. I tried this at once. Broke a vitamin C tablet in two and rubbed the parts over another container of iodine water. The effect was instant. I2 becomes I-, which is tasteless and harmless.
It sounds like you needed water more than you needed to worry about the iodine. Mega doses of iodine can be taken if need be and the Japanese naturally eat a massive amount.
For bleach: They need to change "retreat" to "treat again," like you said. I thought they meant to "back away" and give the water another 15 minutes before drinking. I'm very glad you cleared that up for me.
Sometimes after a Hurricane we are told to boil the water because the water pressure had dropped down low enough that there could have been outside water get into the pipes from small leaks
More great information. Thank you! Some people have a reaction to iodine that can cause severe acne or skin infections, which can show up after about a week of drinking iodine-treated water. So it's a good idea to be familiar with how you personally react to different treatment methods before planning to rely on them long term.
I realise this is an old video. Still very pertinent. Thanks. You missed one type of disinfection, that I would consider others should know. That is hydrogen peroxide. It is similar in nature to how you disinfect, with chlorine, though it is far safer. With a chemical formula of H202, it is essentially water, with an extra oxygen molecule. It is formed in nature, in the upper atmosphere. It's what gives clean, fast running river water it's freshness. Also, why plants thrive better from rainwater (even with all the airbourne pollutants), than tap water. And, you can use it in your garden, at appropriate dilutions. We even make it, in the our bodies. It is manufactured inside our white blood cells, & does the actual warding off of disease. It is also the active ingredient in many tank water treatment products. You can buy 35% H202, & dilute as necessary. Just be careful, it will burn. Store it like any dangerous goods product, but freezing it will increase it's shelf life, which degrades ~10% per year. The reason I know about it, is I use it for health reasons. Contrary, to what mainstream health people say, it IS perfectly safe (as long as you understand how to work with it), for numerous issues: emphysema being a perfect example. I am currently drinking it (under stringent safety conditions). I did this some years ago, for 4 years, to improve my spinal arthritis. Also, just started using it, in a nebulizer. If interested, research the book, "The One Minute Cure.". Dr. David Marquis has some good videos on nebulizing it.
Isn’t calcium hypochlorite also Pool Shock? For above ground pools? Also, iodine is derived from shellfish so it will not be a viable option for people with that allergy. 🐚
@@TheProvidentPrepper that’s good to know. I searched for the disinfectant bleach you recommended and Amazon recommended the pool shock. Finally found the other one too though.
Distillation will separate pretty much all contaminants, yes it is energy intensive. However a solar still is easy to make. using readily available components. Those big water jugs are perfect, some pvc pipe, a sealant. Add sun!! A bit slow but in an emergency it will work.
@@crazysquirrel9425 In a survival situation if you can take unclean water and use a solar still to make it potable, it would save your life. Worry about the other stuff later.
@@ant-1382 Items needed to make a rudimentary solar still: 1) A digging tool 2) Sheet of clear plastic 25% larger than the hole you have to dig. 3) A small rock. 4) A container to collect the water. Hey LbFaith Figueroa...that is a good question. From my perspective, it doesn't matter too much - the important thing is that the water gets clean. There are some combined filters that do a very good job of this . However, it does make some sense to have separate filters. This allows you to change out component portions as needed without losing the remainder of the filter life of the rest. The important thing is to know what you want the filter(s) to do, then find the right products (based on sound performance data) to get the job done. Thanks for being part of the solution!
Hey Pa Sal...sorry for the long delay in responding to your question about coffee filters. Your email went to a strange place in my account until I just came across it. Yes, coffee filters can play a role in your water disinfection. Coffee filters can be used for clarifying your water before disinfection. Clarifying is important in getting out dirt or other things that biological contaminants can "hide" in. Coffee filters won't disinfect or remove any of the bacteria, viruses, or protozoa that can make us sick. Hope that answers your question...Thanks for being part of the solution!
I recently opened one those Water Bricks containers that I put distilled water in months ago. It stores about 3 1/2 gallons. When I opened the lid had a little guey looking something. So I boiled the contents just to be safe. Was that a good or bad idea? 2 questions: How would you recommend to prepare the empty container before filing it again; and is it safe to treat water like that with some kind of bleach? Thank you.
@@TheProvidentPrepper Thank you very much. I put that boiled water in other clean containers (glass). I will now clean that container with gooey look, with your suggestions. Thank you very much again.
Your video suggest that 'Disinfection' includes Filtration, Distillation, Pasteurization, etc. Disinfection is a scientific term that means to kill all living organisms. It has nothing to do with removing chemicals, toxins, or other non-living molecules. As I listen a little more, you come close to distinguishing the various terms.
Hi! Again lol I've been trying to do my best with water storage but currently all I have access to is a climate controlled unit because I don't have a home. Anyway, I've been mainly storing cases of water. I was wondering if I transfer those bottles to blue bricks can I leave it that way indefinitely? Or, does the water have to be rotated to prolong its shelf life? Thank you for always responding 😊
@@TheProvidentPrepper Thank you so much. I've been learning a lot from you! I'm a truck driver so I literally live in my truck until I buy a home. Do you think the blue water jugs at Walmart would be thick enough? The ones offices use for their water machines.

2nd comment: For iodine. You've obviously already got your iodine crystals so I guess you didn't hear that in 2011, the DEA effectively outlawed the sale of iodine crystals in the US. You can still make your own pretty easily or you can buy iodine solution which requires a similar number of drops to bleach to disinfect. Update: Polar Pure may or may not be back in business. You can definitely buy something on Amazon called Polar Pure. It's not clear if it's the same product or not though. Lots of negative reviews. I think I may buy one just for the bottle in case I want to make my own crystals.
@@TheProvidentPrepper Okay, I got my Polar Pure bottle. Found out something new. Iodine sublimates (turns from a solid to a gas) slowly at room temperature. Instructions said to fill it with water and store it that way (in the dark).
Yes. It is the virus killer, in our own bodies. In the upper atmosphere, ozone (0₃) is converted, by water vapour, to oxygen & hydrogen peroxide: 0₃ + H₂0 = 0₂ + H₂0₂ & rains down, onto the earth & water.
