This story is just as real world as that one. More people have enough money for that advice to be applicable than have the money to drop on a Ferrari, let alone be worrying about rolled back ones.
This has been going on for a long time and not in just the US. My grandfather told me a story that he once deposited his Ferrari 400i at Ferrari of Clermont Ferrand in France for some repairs. A salesman decided to take him on test drive of a customer's 512. It came up during the test drive that the dealer would roll back the miles so the customer would be unaware his car was used for marketing purposes. It sent a cold down my grandfather's spine as he wondered if the dealer was doing the same thing to his car.
I think you're giving some Ferrari dealers too much credit. I'm willing to bet that some dealers who took a used ferrari in trade rolled back the odometer to get more on the resale. Even if the dealer is selling on consignment they have a motivation to rollback to increase both their profit and the private sellers profit.
I cant see a dealer with that much greed willing to even notify the seller, much less kick something back. Unless they get caught. Consider it hush money.
When I was a kid I stole $20 from my Dad and got caught he was mad but after 6 months went by I figured he forgot about it. Then one night we were eating with some company at the house and our family friend took his wallet out of his pocket and put it on the table. My dad said from across the room don't leave your wallet there my son will take it and explained in front of everyone what I did. Later that night he lectured me for a long time and explained that when you get caught in one lie you will forever be labeled a lier. After that day I never let anything like that happen ever again. And it has been huge for me in business today I buy real estate and can go to my investors anytime I want and borrow millions of dollars. Some of them don't even ask where the property is I just tell them the terms and they sign the check. Your word is everything never lie, cheat, steal or take shortcuts. I see it all the time in Real Estate funny thing is those guys are the ones who always end up losing in the end. Put in the work and time and its not hard to make it in this world.
Just don't get caught in the first place!!! haha!!! Actually I do the same in my business, after sometime they learn that your not going to cheat them. I have had several jobs called in for resurfacing a bathtub, but they looked at it before the cleaners had a chance to clean it. I could have handed them a bill for a chemical wash and said it looks good now. But I didn't,I showed them the pics and explained what I thought happened so someone didn't get in trouble. Those same properties sign my invoices without ever reading them now. And you never know who you might run into down the road. The one you padded the ticket on or did shotty work for. Kharma.
Ferrari does benefit from rolled back odometers, it keeps the enormous depreciation seen in other exotics at bay, because it keeps secondhand sale prices up, and their brand is seen as a better value.
Rollbacks is one of the main reasons why I started leasing brand new cars instead of buying pre owned used cars that came off a lease or were traded in. I would estimate that atleast 50 percent of the cars that are on the road as of today have been rolled back. Sometimes you can spot them based on wear and tear but most of the time it’s really hard because used car dealers roll back 20k-30k miles. That mileage difference on a couple year old basic luxury car like a Lexus or bmw will make the car atleast $10-15 thousand dollars and that’s a lot for a used car dealer. Most of the time rolling back odometers is what keeps used car lots/dealers in business and making good money. We have used car lots all over here in New York and their overhead is really high and inventory doesn’t move as fast... sometimes I see the same 15-20 cars on the used car lot for months but when he finally sells one he will make a good amount of money thanks to a roll back. As far as how much it costs for a civilian to get their mileage rolled back is depending on make and model of your car. Generally a Benz or bmw will be close to a grand because the mileage is stored in numerous places but I think it’s BULLSHIT. I think you get charged more by a mechanic just because you drove in with an expensive car because my friends 2016 Honda Accord was quoted $200-$400 and my bmw 550i was quoted $800-$1200
As a new viewer, i would bet Rob would not have an odometer rolled back, he seems honest and fair. I believe it's against Federal law to roll back milage.
Rollback to zero miles, yes. Rollback for legit reasons to a specific documented mileage reading (as Rob Mentioned with the failed dashboard), I might understand. I remember back in the 80s there were lots of people who would disconnect the speedometer/odometer cable. Then later on, some of them told me how they manually turned the mechanical odometer wheels on the dashboard. They acted like it was okay because everyone else was doing it. :rolls eyes:
Why? That still doesnt make sense. It should keep the original mileage. Because it still has those miles on the car. Idc if someone slapped paint on the thing, it still has mileage on it.
Gearhead Daily Ok but its not? Do you think they throw out every little part and use a new unibody? Are they throwing away perfectly good pistons rods crank block heads etc not even mentioning differentials transmissions, stress on the frame/body from potholes.... A 0 mile car has 0 miles. A 50k mile car thats been "restored" is a 50k mile car thats been restored. 2 different things
I would guess open source sites like Vin Wiki and more popular forums would ultimately be the downfall of this. It’s all about the data being in the public domain.
Odometer rollback is an everyday thing in South Florida. I've ran five VIN numbers on Carfax recently and all of them were rollbacks . One of them was rolled back only 25k miles but found one that was a 200k miles
Good video, Rob. One thing you mentioned that I tend to disagree with, is that Ferrari "doesn't care" if a car resells for more or less money. If Ferrari can achieve market recognition with every one of their vehicles as an appreciating collector asset, then they can subsequently justify higher MSRPs for future models. In other words, if resales are, from the perspective of depreciation percentage, garnering higher dollar amounts on a widespread basis, that does help their brand warrant these astronomical prices when they bring their next flagship to bear.
Thanks Rob, I wasnt aware rollbacks were that widespread. I test drove a Porsche Boxster once the owner said it had 40,000Kms on the clock but when I drove it the steering wheel, dash and interior trim looked like it had done over 100,000 kms. And driving the car also felt like it had higher mileage on it rather than 40,000kms. So always be aware if something doesnt make sense something might be wrong.
A very good warning to anyone looking for an expensive used car. If it's too good to be true, it almost always is. And it's always best to have any used vehicle checked out independently by a good tech. You just never know what one will find both inside the dealer level scan tool as well as underneath on a lift.
We did a full restomod on a '65 Mustang last year, part of which was replacing the Instrument cluster with a brand new one which was at zero. Not the same as rolling back I guess. The shell and the glass is still over 50 years old but everything else is brand new.
just drive in reverse aren't there negatives to low mileage cars too? cars like to be driven, if it's been sitting in a garage for a decade+ you probably don't want to start joyriding it without work right?
Brandon Keithley it all depends on maintenance. You can buy a clapped Toyota Camry with 12000 miles that runs like shit because they never changed oil or anything
Yup, it's really easy to to not record mileage. I was young once. Ford Explorer was as easy as wiring a switch to a certain fuse and you just turn it off and your display with mileage would not record. I've seen fancier setups in GM vehicles where it's wired to the cig lighter and you disable it by pressing the cig lighter in. Motorcycles can be as easy as unscrewing a cable (had a bike where the cable popped off, once I got around to it I hooked it back up)...LOL Boats are also common, you have a $800,000 boat it's common to discount the hours because you don't want to loose value most people don't use their expensive boats much so you blend right it as "yeah I keep this at the dock as a weekend place". I grew up and I rather not do that shit. Still know someone that does it :-( It's why you got to look real close at whatever you buy and ask yourself does the wear look like it matches the use that is being claimed.
I'm really interested in seeing all of the falsely claimed rollbacks that have been done. Like Mr. Spaghetti says there's probably more than we realise.
Michael Bacon I’d bet the dealerships do it to if they got caught on one there’s nothing stopping them from doing that to a trade in as well if anything there money to be had by making it look newer and nicer
I worked at LandRoverNorthAmerica. We had a special device that would zero out mileage, but only in ONE situation. The way the mileage works on landies is, the mileage is stored in both the cluster and the body ECU. If you swap out either, the other updates the mileage with the value stored. So, a tech would grab an ECU or Cluster out of an inventory car to try in a customer car during the diagnostic process. BOOM! Instant brand new rover with 120K miles on it! Then they would fill out REAMS of legal paperwork, and send the item back to us for clearing. The device was potted with brown epoxy, so we never knew the schematics and components to make another...
I bought one of my rx7s with 160k miles exactly. I noticed the mazda re-man motor and the snapped speedo cable. It still reads 160k. 2,500 rpm in 4th gear is 40mph in an S4 FC btw
Great subject... if people had any idea of how many cars are rolled back they'd hire an expert for their next purchase. Very difficult to roll back a non-digital odometer but a lot of sellers try it with comical results.
As an independent shop owner, I own many factory scan tools and just looked up the DEIS system, and can purchase the software alone. With that being the case, I would also be able to roll back the mileage. I would have call Ferrari and tell them why, which as you said, could make up any reason, get the code and set the mileage back. Most manufactures no longer allow this and you have to order a new cluster and the mileage comes programmed into the cluster, PCM, BCM, where ever its stored in that particular car. Ive never seen an ODO rolled back to 0 Its always been the last known service.
It is weird how the ODOs work... I had mine rolled back. In my KIA. The dealer had to replace the instrument cluster and as it turned out it was the place where the driven miles is stored. They programmed the new one with approximately same number (actually it was about 800 miles less). Non significant, but true.
2nd Gen Ford Explorers had the ablitiy to disable the odometer and speedodometer by pulling certain fuse. A few other items did not work when that fuse was pulled. It was only a minor inconvience
Look at the brake pedal. The corners start getting smooth around 50,000, and wear through to metal around 100,000. That being said, look at the pedal wear on old cars, and check the mileage on them for yourself, it's really easy to get a pretty good sense of the car's actual mileage from the wear on the pedals.
When I was 13 - me and my friend drove his dads car in reverse for over an hour before we realized the odometer was still going up. I think it was a Buick lol
This is one of the reasons that I refrained from buying a used car 2 months ago. In one instance a dealer offered me a 3.5 year old Ford Focus with (supposedly) 30K miles on the clock. I test drove it but it behaved a bit weirdly through corners (worse than my old Focus with 150K miles). And then I discovered that the carpet was quite worn where the drivers feet had been resting. 30K miles? Yeah, for sure! After that experience I decided to stock up my budget and go for a new car.
I seen a 2018 platinum duly loaded (100k+truck in Canada) rolled back twice and go to ford for warranty, its a federal offence in Canada to roll back odometers
When I was a teenager I used to roll back my dad’s Harley Davison with drill in reverse connected to the speedometer cable because every time he went out of town he would check the mileage before his vacation & then after I never got caught
I've heard of a few used car dealerships In my town that used to do this. They would roll them back just enough to not cause any inconsistencies on the carfax report.
Considering you buy Ferraris and presumably want to keep buying Ferraris in the future you aren't exactly going to rat out yourself or your dealers. Those ultra low mileage Ferraris and Lamborghinis always seemed suspicious, now we know why. My neighbor bought his 16M Spider with 2,500 miles on it when it was 4 years old and it always seemed weird someone would buy such a beautiful and amazing car like that and then only put 2,500 miles on it in 4 years.
wow, and to think Unique Performance got closed up and fined for rolling back the odometers on cars that were completely rebuilt from the ground up! I worked for a restoration shop who specialized in Camaros and Corvettes and we'd roll back the odometers to zero because with a brand new motor, transmission, rebuilt rear end, etc etc etc it was basically a new car. We'd tell anyone buying them that's what we did and what the mileage was on the car when we got our hands on it.
We aren't able to do odometer repairs at Ford, the cluster has to be sent to the original manufacturer for repair or replacement. Our scan tools don't have the functionality for it either.
I feel like rob is that one guy at parties who always tells crazy stories and people are just like ok yeah sure but then one day it’s proven that he was being honest the whole time and everyone is like :o kind of like that one movie.... I think it was called big fish? Or something? Anyway going off on a tangent. Great vids rob love them keep it up
They can't do that in Sweden since I'd say we have a pretty good system against that sort of things, however an import could ( and often are ) be. Our vehicle inspection over here do not let that that happen, you do it every year or less if your car is new . But of course, if you drive 2000 miles and they roll it back 1700 then you will not get caught, but the hustle....
Rob... The whole point was that Ferrari trade ins to the dealer are being rolled back and the second hand market getting screwed, not about the private owner going to the stealership and having it done to put $$$ on the table for that private owner.
Have you seen the ford trucks problem (fleet style). Apparently the system isn’t fully integrated with the frame so what companies would do is buy a high end interior and then swap the cab with a cheap one. They put the miles on it then after a while swap the cabs back. So you have a 200k lariat or king ranch that says it has 10k on it.
More performance cars need to come with the forward facing cameras like the Demon and Camaro ZL1 come with (10 gears!!) that also tell you info like what your lap times were and how much you accelerated during a drag run and when you made you gear changes, downloadable to mac or PC
Probably 60% of odo rollbacks I see are dealerships doing it So maybe it's nothing to do with part of a service but when they potentially are a dealership doing used exotics that they are rolling them back
This is super easy to do on motorcycles. I know a “guy” that has a 2005 wide glide with 37k miles on it really but the new speedometer put on 2 years ago now says 5600 miles.
I knew a guy that rolled back the manual speedometers on Cadillac's that were lease cars with high highway miles. The dealership paid him $40.00 a car and he was doing about10 cars a month.
It doesn’t matter if the function is there or not. It can be changed with a rom dump and a hex editor. Rob is 100% correct. The only way to make everyone honest is to have heath reporting to manufacture servers
After 10 years old (in florida) you can switch a title to "mileage exempt", then you can just buy a new dash/odomoter on ebay. I knew a guy who lost 40k miles on an m3 via dash swap.
I bought a 1990 mustang last year with the odometer showing 48k (they would role over back to 0 once you hit 100k miles). He told me that it was truly 48k miles and not 148k. For the price I paid I assumed it was really 148k. A week later I was having an issue with some of the gauges not working so I pulled the dash out to look at the gauges. When I pulled the gauge cluster out it had a sticker with a date from 1992... Hard to tell how many miles it really had
As a kid (mid-90's in a Cleveland suburb) my mom covered police blotter for the local paper. I still remember there was a shady dealer who'd reset the odometers on every car on his lot to zero. Police couldn't figure out how to bust him for well over a year until FBI got involved.
Here in NYS we have yearly inspections. Lets say average Ferrari owner drives 1,200 miles/year. If you roll back more than the driver drove that year it will show in the "Carfax".
I had a car that had an odometer that went bad. Replaced it, along with a sticker in the door jamb and the state computer had to have a report in it stating a bunch of info
That is not the case only with exotic cars, like 90% of the cars have their km rolled back. I mean at leasy 90% in Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria... I have seen WV/Mercedes/Audi and others with 200,000km rolled back to 110,000km or less.
Walmart rolls back prices
Jomievolution8 this comment is gold 😂
Jomievolution8 I saw this and laughed my ass off. Good one.

assman you're literally everywhere 😅😅
I like how you always have real world examples for your stories.
accept for the other day when he posted his financial advice and a lot of people complained because they were too poor to relate lmao
This story is just as real world as that one. More people have enough money for that advice to be applicable than have the money to drop on a Ferrari, let alone be worrying about rolled back ones.

*Plot twist:* Ferraris are actually more reliable than Hondas but they have their miles rolled back so they seem to break down easily
West Senkovec I love it...
The only valid explanation for why they would give a seven year warranty.
West Senkovec you my friend are brilliant!! That is so funny. Pure comedy with no spaghetti joke!!
Lmfaoo
Lmaooo fat marahs million mile ferrari
I would rather have a rolled back Ferrari over my nonexistent one.
If they weren't rolling them back prices would be lower and you might be able to afford one.
Naughty Nihilist get a job maybe?

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be jumping Ferraris anyway. The suspension really isn't designed for that kind of shock load.

The wing on that Corvette should be a crime.
Ferrari doing shady sheet. Imagine muh fookin shock.
Thank you for the time-stamp!
2nd Gen Ford Explorers had the ablitiy to disable the odometer and speedodometer by pulling certain fuse. A few other items did not work when that fuse was pulled. It was only a minor inconvience
Has anyone else seen the video on @lamborghiniks Instagram of a 2010 458 press car casually going faster than a 458 Speciale customer car?
Look at the brake pedal. The corners start getting smooth around 50,000, and wear through to metal around 100,000. That being said, look at the pedal wear on old cars, and check the mileage on them for yourself, it's really easy to get a pretty good sense of the car's actual mileage from the wear on the pedals.
this is interesting im gonna use this bro thanks
Excellent video, thanks Rob.
No doubt this Spider's tires were well worn...
Am I the only one that thinks or knows odometer tampering is a Felony?
wow, and to think Unique Performance got closed up and fined for rolling back the odometers on cars that were completely rebuilt from the ground up!
Reminds me of my favourite country bands....Johnny Rollback and the Texas Rimjobs .
bought a cheap 2002 ford Taurus with 98k. a year after I got it did a Carfax and they said about 270k
We aren't able to do odometer repairs at Ford, the cluster has to be sent to the original manufacturer for repair or replacement. Our scan tools don't have the functionality for it either.
Of course if you stuck to states like NY, the mileage goes to Albany with each state inspection. And is on file forever.
There is no justification ever, ever for rolling back an odometer. It's fraud pure and simple.
The only time I can think of justifying it is if the GAUGES are being taken out to be installed in a totally homemade kit car.
Who cares
I feel like rob is that one guy at parties who always tells crazy stories and people are just like ok yeah sure but then one day it’s proven that he was being honest the whole time and everyone is like :o kind of like that one movie.... I think it was called big fish? Or something? Anyway going off on a tangent. Great vids rob love them keep it up
The miles are recorded in the car computer so even if they disconnect the speed odometer it still gets recorded
All you need is a scanner to check it
They can't do that in Sweden since I'd say we have a pretty good system against that sort of things, however an import could ( and often are ) be.
Today Mr. Spaghetti feeds jimbo some rolled back pasta
Fair plat to rob for giving the time stamp to skip the video
Probably 60% of odo rollbacks I see are dealerships doing it
So maybe it's nothing to do with part of a service but when they potentially are a dealership doing used exotics that they are rolling them back
Mr. SuperFlipper's neighbors are finally taking legal action....the area is zoned residential - not business.
Thanks, that was informative.
This is super easy to do on motorcycles. I know a “guy” that has a 2005 wide glide with 37k miles on it really but the new speedometer put on 2 years ago now says 5600 miles.
First good video in a while
I knew a guy that rolled back the manual speedometers on Cadillac's that were lease cars with high highway miles. The dealership paid him $40.00 a car and he was doing about10 cars a month.
It doesn’t matter if the function is there or not. It can be changed with a rom dump and a hex editor. Rob is 100% correct. The only way to make everyone honest is to have heath reporting to manufacture servers
LAME PASTA JOKE
Meat Missile F1-11 seriously these hot old after 2 days

Disconnect speedo sensor in a F355 and the odometer stops as well. Probably many other models that this is doable for as well.
Pretty sure Rob disconnects gauges on his cars. Cough cough Supra...
Ferris Bueller: Hey let's roll back your dad's Ferrari odometer so he doesn't know you used it.
Ferrari: Quick Patrick write that down.
Thanks Jimbo. :)
As a kid (mid-90's in a Cleveland suburb) my mom covered police blotter for the local paper. I still remember there was a shady dealer who'd reset the odometers on every car on his lot to zero. Police couldn't figure out how to bust him for well over a year until FBI got involved.
He'd even advertise "ALL ODOMETERS REPLACED!!!" in print classifieds.
I've found this option looking around doing Porsche diagnostics with an Autologic blue box.
Today Mr. Spaghetti tells us how restaurants makes their meatballs fresh again
Very nice background work on the thumbnail
THE SOUND THAT ROB MAKES WHEN CATCHING HIS BREATH IS ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS...HAHAHAHAHAA
Good information
guy who had a diablo forever was that a shot on rob dahm?! Does he have his disconnected?!
Here in NYS we have yearly inspections. Lets say average Ferrari owner drives 1,200 miles/year. If you roll back more than the driver drove that year it will show in the "Carfax".
You'd disconnect the skip shift on the 90's f body's and it would also disconnect the speedo and odometer
I saw that Montana plate on the Vette:)
This is why I like Chevy. Onstar keeps track of those miles automatically in a data base.
This channel is entertaining but it did destroy any dreams I had of owning an exotic car...
