    7:05 That's the nicest ignition of anthracite I've seen on youtube and I've been searching for days. Bravo sir

    This video is the best one on utube by far. I am doing to my furnace a lot of what you show in the video. I even made some of the same tool you are using. Its so much easier to maintain my fire after watching this. You saved me from many hours of frustration. Thanks Leon

    Thanks Leon. What is the negative pressure system for the ash tub? I would LOVE to keep my ash tub by my stove like you do. Thanks!!

    Nice !! So this cole furnace heats water that runs through radiators?

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin No they don't run thru radiators. One coil preheats my domestic hot water with a separate tank and the other coil keeps my outdoor hot tub warm all winter. Thank you for the question :)

    cool video! interesting process and setup you've got. now I'm trying to figure out what song you used...

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! The song is off a solo album by John Petrucci from the album Suspended Animation. I believe the song is called Damage Control.

    +Leon Layton, do you know the specs of that furnace unit? in terms of BTUs. trying to gauge my house needs.

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The furnace is rated for 120,000 BTU per hour but I would never want to run it that hot. Based on my coal usage, it will comfortably put out 65-70,000 BTU which was adequate for my 2400 square foot home at -10 Fahrenheit outside. I've used as much as 120 pounds of anthracite per day in bitter cold and as little as 25 pounds per day during warm spells.

    Why do you leave the ash pan out during the burn cycle?

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bombs Away LeMay - So that it can't block radiant heat from the fuel bed coming down thru the grates and hitting the floor of the furnace.

      Leon Layton ok makes sense. I just installed the Hot Blast 1557M in my house and have been testing coal in it.

    How long before you need to do this all over again?

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeffipookins Depends on heat demand. During shoulder months I shake and load once every 24 hours. During high heat demand, in January and February I'll do 12 or 18 hours between tendings.

    a think a stoker would be so much easier. i use a keystoker 90K free standing stove. fill the hopper and it takes care of itself completely and its thermostat controlled.

    • @leonlayton8923
      @leonlayton8923  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have since hooked up a thermostat in the living room and it controls the primary combustion air and keeps my house temp steady. Yeah I agree, stoker would be much easier. I'll have one at some point in the near future. But for now, I enjoy taking care of the fire... :)

    • @ad356
      @ad356 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i find hand fired interesting but a automatic stoker fits my life. i love the way it takes care of itself. make sure there is coal in the hopper and dump ash once a day, controlled by a thermostat it otherwise completely takes care of itself. almost as east as natural gas furnace, lots of heat and cheap to run
