I was about to say, what if it’s just a villain like Blind in disguise? It could very easily be that she is a Yiga member disguised as a Gerudo woman, and not only sells her wares, from more inappropriate attire (come on, skintight “sneaking” clothes? I think it’s just the Gerudo equivalent of lingerie just using a more family friendly term, “armor”), to straight up illegal things, all to make dough and use it for illegal reasons like getting materials for yiga armor, weapons, the like. That stuff takes resources, resources a merchant like her could get her hands on. Plus, that would explain why she’s in Gerudo Town, a town nearby, that’s full of warriors. It’d be easy to sneak around, buy weapons and the like, if you pass as one of them. And if someone suspects something? Oh, she’s just a lingerie shop owner, no wonder she plays it on the down-low, privacy and whatnot. It’s the perfect cover. And… come on, she could be lying about “the sun not agreeing with her”, to explain why she’s never working at night; she’s out doing Yiga stuff, running goods to her clan, in the night where it’s the perfect time to do it. It’s probably an excuse, cause… come on, Gerudo are literally a people who live only in the desert. Either she got the worst of the genetic lottery, or she’s lying.

something I've noticed, the gerudo are often shown wearing very reveling clothes. the reason why people in desert cultures wear covering flowing robes and the like is to keep your skin safe from the hot winds, both to stop sweating (the largest cause of water loss in the desert) and to block sandstorms tearing at your skin. this indicates that the gerudo:
    1) don't sweat
    2) have much thicker skin than humans
them having thick skin makes sense in hindsight. they are a warrior culture and are often described as being very tough and durable.

Looking at the type of armor on sale, it's rather more on the appealing and spicy side rather than functional.
I mean, shirtless armor (playing as the sole gerudo male, thus king?) skin tight "sneaking" (gimp) suit? If you take off the family friendly vaneer of armor, then you can see why other people wouldn't wear it in public.
My theory is that gerudo women buy the clothes for their husbands to wear... in the bedroom, shall we say.
TL;DR the Gerudo Secret shop is the Gerudo equivelent of Victoria's Secret, and they want to spare the young girl's innocent eyes.
EDIT: Pandora's box has been opened. Those who go into the comments, beware!

@@danielparsley3675 According to lore presented in Ocarina of Time, Gerudo males are born exactly once every 100 years, or rather * were * born. No game since has really addressed it, and they seem to be unaware of this fact in the “present” of BotW. Since a century is rare but not long enough for a culture to forget something so huge, either (1) Ganondorf’s refusal to properly die has messed with whatever reincarnation magic thing would cause the birth of a new Voe, and there will not be one again until his “slot” is opened (2) the once-a-century male gerudo was never natural in the first place, but somehow ritually created by Gerudo magic or weird biological stimuli that were kept secret in the Gerudo royal family (or by their court witches Kotake & Koyume) and either was lost or simply stopped being used and was forgotten after OoT, or (3) this fact is being deliberately hidden, probably by either a Ganondorf-serving monarchist cult or the Gerudo royals who do not want competitors for the throne.
If (1) she’s definitely NOT a voe, if (2) s/he could be if the secret rites were rediscovered or never lost but merely kept secret, but probably not, if (3) s/he is almost certainly a secret voe, whether hidden from birth by the rulers or the “ganonists”.

I'm inclined to think it is other Gerudo women. If the Yiga were her customers, why don't any of them dress this way; why doesn't ANYONE else dress this way? If we at least saw Yiga masquerading as Gerudo, in the desert (or as Zora/Gorons), maybe I could see them getting into town, and getting gear, but they don't, and it wouldn't make them any stealthier, as it's STILL male armor, and not for women. If it was just for the element protection, I'd be more inclined to imagine them dressed as Hylian women, and purchasing/stealing the earrings from that Gerudo shop, instead, allowing them to maintain their traditional attire, or Hylian civ getup, and just wear some earrings, or a necklace, which this game shows are normal for people. I think the Gerudo in Tarrey Town also sells Desert Voe armor, after that quest is completed, so maybe it's okay outside of town.
In the end, maybe it's Ganon's fault. Since there are no other male Gerudo, and certain agencies; possibly even the Gerudo themselves have taken steps to keep him from returning, maybe it's illegal because someone who might want such attire is Gdorf, or someone working for him. Making male Gerudo gear might be seen as paying homage to him, and they've had it with Ganon.
As for the darkness, it's a secret shop, so no peek holes means no light. The luminous armor doesn't work as well in the daytime, and sunlight might even be bad for it, lore wise. If she needs to always be in her shop; never know when a customer might actually sneak by, or sneak out at night to get resources for, and test the luminous armor, maybe she just can't be as active in the day. If people want to see it work before paying,, that means buying said armor at night.
Maybe the aura of the luminous stone has soaked into her. It's been theorized that it glows with the souls of the departed, so maybe she isn't as fond of the light, but I assume she's st least no more a monster than Kilton.

Luminous stones are rumored to light up st night because they were infused with the souls of the dead. It's possible that if she really was a vampire, she didnt drink blood, but harvested some customers souls from their bodies to make the luminous clothes. Or she could have harvested them from the stones themselves. Probably why she needs them to make the clothes.
Also: I seen some comments about the yiga not buying voe clothing:

Idk if this has been suggested yet: but what if she’s a moblin? There was that one time in Minish Cap we had to light a place up to reveal an intruder was a monster in hiding. Also, poke fun at the numerous moblin’s throughout the series that hide peacefully.
Plus, it would go nicely with your immortal idea given monsters don’t die-die. They just get resurrected every blood moon. If Greta got killed- she’d just have to wait a generation and walk back in!

  • @JariDawnchild

I'm wondering if Greta underwent a similar process to the Sheikah monks? Maybe she learned it from the Yiga Clan? Here's a thought: maybe she has intentions of birthing the next voe? Not necessarily for any nefarious purposes. She may be of the opinion that outlawing voe in their society has removed something important from their cultural fabric? Or, she may be secretly in league with the Yiga, and specifically intends to mother the next Ganondorf? Or not; it could be that she and the Yiga know where Ganondorf's semi-corpse is at and wants to ensure he has plenty to wear when he's revived. That brings up another question: How did she know what the desert voe armor should look like? Going to go examine what Ganondorf is wearing in the BoTW2 trailer very carefully now lol.

(Plus, canonically, there aren't that many male Gerudo anyway so it would be weird for there to suddenly be enough to be a non-insignificant proportion of the Yiga.)

That last part about her being something more than human is quite interesting. An affinity for darkness, hates sunlight, and apparently has a few skeletons in the closet doesn't paint a pretty picture.
I know this sounds crazy, but what if she is a disciple of Ganondorf? An affinity for darkness is typically associated with monsters. In BotW, stal enemies and Kilton are the only things that come out in the Night. Another thing is that she sells Voi armor, perhaps she is waiting for the day that Ganondorf returns, or at least pays respects to him. And one last thing, the memory of Ganondorf isn't entirely gone. Urboosa says that there are tales that Calamity Ganon took the form of a Gerudo at one point, obviously he was originally a Gerudo, but after so long they likely believe that Calamity Ganon was always his true form. Also in AoC, Astor of course has the Gerudo symbol on his attire, and is a disciple of Ganon. It could be that Greta is also a disciple of Ganon, who uses dark magic to prolong her life and youth at the cost of being restricted to the Darkness...or there's really nothing and I'm digging deeper than this already is.

While hindsight is 20/20, I find it funny that TotK confirms that the Gerudo HATE the Yiga, thus making it very unlikely for them to be a potential customer of that shop (well, except that that would explain more of why the sales are illegal). I'd say a more likely secondary customer is the only "man" who ever was confirmed to sneak into Gerudo city, the one "Voe" who gets you the "Vai" outfit for entering the town in the first place.

There have been vampire-like enemies, Vire. And Ganondorf is also a long lived Gerudo so there's a bit more evidence for either of those.
But just a thought... in Zelda 2, some of Ganon's minions could take human forms and would transform back into monsters when talked to. Not unlike how the Yiga do in BotW. And that said, some Yiga do appear to you as a woman travelers. So they would not even have that hard of a time getting in. And Greta could be a monster in disguise. The sunlight thing also reminds me of Blind the Theif from LttP. Blind took the form of a maiden until exposed to sunlight. So maybe she does have a reason to avoid light that doesn't necessarily mean she has to be a vampire.

  • @felixevers478
    @felixevers478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I've looked at the video, and at some of the comments here, and I might have an explanation for this.
Greta makes Yiga clothing, sure, but she doesn't need to be an immortal creature to do that. Her mother, grandmother etc. might've run the store before her, and now it's up to Greta to do the same. The reason she can't go out is because the people outside may know her face, so she has to hide. Maybe she can go out at night though, seeing as most Gerudo are asleep by then.
That also makes an opportunity for something else: During the night, Greta sells Yiga clothing to them. She meets up with someone (maybe a Yiga, I've seen someone say that might be the guy who sells Link the female clothes in the Kara Kara bazaar) and sells them the Yiga armor.
However, if that's the case, why would she need a shop in the Gerudo Fort? My explanation would be similar to what MNB said, which is that they gift the clothes to their husbands. They would still need to buy the desert-suited clothing somewhere if they wanted them to visit sometime (doesn't need to be in the fort, the Kara Kara bazaar is a pretty easy meet-up point).
Something that I can't really understand still, is the Luminous armor. The stones Greta uses to make them (Luminous Stones) are said to contain the souls of the dead. Of course, the stones support the "Greta only goes out at night" theory, because it's just way easier to spot the luminous ores in the dark. But why does Greta have them? Why does she sell those clothes? Possibly, she has a set for herself, to have a little bit of light during her nightly travels. But that doesn't explain why she sells them, or even has them in the first place.
The shop could also be a masquerade; she needs a place to live for herself, without coming across as suspicious. That's why she sells the Voe armor, and the luminous armor. Of course, she makes more money because of it, but it's also a good solution. She needs a place to live, the Gerudo women want her clothing for men, setting up a shop is a win-win.
*TL;DR:* Greta's not immortal, but does make Yiga armor. She goes out at night to sell them to the clan, and collects materials for her armors in the meantime. She lives in the Gerudo Fort, so she can sell more, and has a place to live.

It was a pretty good playthrough and my first exposure into the wider Zelda universe (I have heard of Zelda, Breath of the Wild most of all, but haven’t really researched into it until an offhand comment I heard from someone before finally deciding to search for playthroughs out of curiosity). With Greta I thought she was biologically a woman but identifies as a man and was inspired by this to make male Gerudo clothes but you might be right instead.

So he makes up the lie that he is Hylian Vai so the Gerudos don't kick his ass. He is also one of the few people that can sell you Gerudo clothes. The only other way to obtain the clothes is the Gerudo city and Terry town which has a Gerudo citizen. This implies that only Gerudos know how to make these clothes knowledge he could have gain from his Gerudo mother. The word Hylian Vai is highlighted in multiple conversations. Huh, I always thought that the secret of the club was that there were actually male-bodied (voe) Gerudo in Gerudo Town disguised as females just like Link. That the demand was for better fitting clothing to wear at home or in private. We got the female version of the armor from one such voe who preferred dressing as a woman after all, and his skin tone and appearance were very similar to a typical Gerudo vai. It's been awhile since Ocarina of Time, but male Gerudo were seen as bad omens then (or potential leaders of great power, Oh Hi holder of the Triforce of Power!). However, male-bodied Gerudo were a possibility. I don't think it's ever really mentioned what happens to voe who are born to or as Gerudos in Breath of the Wild... but, I could imagine crossdressing becoming a sort of norm, as in "No, I'm not a Gerudo male. I'm not Gannondorf's reincarnation." A way of rejecting that once connection Gannondorf had to the Gerudo by the other Gerudo, yet allowing a male-bodied Gerudo to live their lives peacefully. Just as vai rather than voe. A potential huge cultural mess of misgendering, but necessary to try and prevent Gannon reincarnating? Instead of Gerudo men being born rarely, it became there is no such thing as a male Gerudo?

  • @samoththemamoth

Kilton is part monster, therefore he can make armor to blend in with monsters and society. If you upgrade the radiant armor, you can walk almong the stal monsters. If Greta is part monster she can make monster clothing like Kilton, and to add on, Kilton only comes in nighttime... When it's dark and the sun is not shining. Blood moons also happen at night to recreate monsters because it's dark... And monsters must like darkness.
Bonus: Monsters of different kinds get along, so yigas and vampires could too because it's common. And vampires may be a new monster, but Kilton is too. There both special, and I think they connect. Greta and Kilton are very mysterious.
And that's why what she's doing is secret and illegal...

You need to cross dress to enter town, it stands to reason maybe townspeople wish to cross dress themselves. For many reasons. After all, it’s Gerudo who know the password, and don’t like that you’re eavesdropping on their secret discussion. As for the “size” of the clothing, I chalk that up to video game logic, all armor fits everyone.

@@damagedcharizardcollector1195 Greta is actually a man. He just keeps portraying himself as a Woman because otherwise he would be Banned. Thats his little safe space where he can Dress however he likes and makes masculine clothes for other folks

I assumed that she was selling direct to disguised Hylian men. She sees right through your disguise when no one else does. Given their similarities she might have made the Hylian Vai garments that you walk in with. She might strait up be supporting human trafficking into Gerudo town.

I feel like she is totally selling to the Yiga but maybe it was passed down to her. I feel like “the sun doesn’t agree with me” is more of a euphemism about not bringing her likely despised business to the light of town if it was ever found out. Also, maybe the yiga buy in the dead of night to avoid having to pass as hylian? But vampire Gerudo is pretty metal so I’m going with that too lmao

Going the vampire route, she could be some kind of undead (aside from vampire) that uses makeup and perfumes to hide traces of it. If she is actually some kind of vampire that would be rather interesting, since we've seen all manner of undead in the Zelda series.

I think the obvious answer would be that Greta is a voe... that's it, no other secret to hide.
Maybe (s)he got to stay inside a house not to scare the other Gerudos, because of the Ganondorf thing in their history?

Greta is honestly one of my favorite NPCs and that's mainly cuz of a roleplay I did years ago and hearing the possibility that she could be something similar to a vampire is amazing and I LOVE this theory

    ***TOTK SPOILER ALERT!!!***
Now, that is pretty curious and plausible theory. Especially, with something that happens in TotK. We need someone who went through the whole game to confirm that, but....
With the whole Gerudo City living in an underground bunker and City being abandoned (not sure if Greta's still in GSC or in the bunker) Yiga are now shown kidnapping fashion students &designers to create their Yiga armors. And, I know that overall it's just a plot to allow Link to infiltrate Yiga hideout, but...
...What if Yiga are in dire need of new seamstresses, because Greta is in the bunker and can't just go to her shop?
