    I remember sitting in the theater watching the movie and when Vulcan got destroyed, my dad (who is a Trekkie) actually said "They did *not* just do that!" And I remember thinking "Oh yeah, they did."

  • @JeremyJahns
    @JeremyJahns  11 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I would buy that if Chekov didn't say "Away team is entering the atmosphere" well after the freefall began. Then again, he did say "20,000 meters", which implies that Vulcan is a much smaller planet than earth. It matters not. The movie still kicks ass, and Humans are impervious to the defense of the Vulcan Atmosphere. Which is why Sci-fi is awesome.

  • @SlimThrull

    No mention of Karl Urban as McCoy? I get that McCoy had a smaller role, but Urban nailed the character (arguably better than either Pine or Quinto). The accent, the demeanor, the... grumpiness. He IS Bones.
    Though, I did love the rest of the review. Spot on for everything else. I had a nearly nearly identical reaction when Vulcan was destroyed. "Wait, what? No. No. Ok, they're dreaming and they'll wake up. Or they can make an anti-black hole and fix everything. Right? Riiiiiiight?" I was not expecting that. At all.

      I was half expecting a "Yesterday's Enterprise" situation where if the thing that had caused the time-line to split off were somehow "fixed" that the timeline itself would automatically repair itself. But yeah, that didn't happen.
      Though I was happy with it overall. And afterwards I definitely appreciated the fact that they found a way to do a reboot, and have some creative leeway with it while not saying that none of the other stuff had happened. Especially since they did it in a way that's already been established to be possible in Trek.

    Technically, this is like the "Days of Future Past" film for the Star Trek franchise. Think about it, the original movies did happen, and then what happens is that some character has to go back in time and alter stuff and it ends up creating a new timeline.

    .........They don't splat during Warp Drive, because it isn't the ship that's moving, it's the space around them. Yes, they talk about "inertial dampeners", but otherwise, Warp Drive "works" because they're literally warping the space-time around them, and the ship itself is "motionless".

    To me, Nero was just simply there as a device in which to develop the crew's building relationship with each other, particularily Kirk and Spock's. He had a motive and being Romulan he was closer to Vulcan's ancestry. The focus of this film was really about re-introducing the crew.

    The depiction of him being conflicted and confused between emotion and logic is just sooooooo good. He is literally the most interesting character in the movie because of that, and again, I am so shocked that him being conflicted between emotion and logic has never actually been developped in the previous movies. Really nice job JJ!

    Not a huge Star Trek guy, but I liked the movie alright. That supernova destroying the galaxy thing rubbed me the wrong way though, as did the villain blaming the destruction of his home planet through that supernova on Spock and the federation. Or, you know, that space-faring, technologically advanced race could have just vacated their planet, it's not like we can't roughly calculate when a star is gonna blow up.

      And yes, you can skydive from space into atmo if you're properly shielded and not jsut following the trajectory of the vessel that dropped you. Gravity at space station level is nearly as strong as it is at sea level, it's jsut things that are up there are only falling as fast as the planet is falling away from them so they never get any closer.

    Nerd moment:
    Warp drive would not splat people to the back of the ship, because technically the ship isn't moving.
    A warp bubble contracts the space in front of the object while expanding the space behind it. The ship isn't moving, the space is the thing that's moving.
    That's why trans-warp beaming is talked about in this movie. "It never occurred to me to think of space as the thing that was moving", which actually doesn't make sense from Mr. Scott since he should know how warp technology works.

    I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but regarding the scene where they "dive" into the atmosphere; the shuttle has a magnetic launch system, which you hear immediately preceding their release. In addition, the air being sucked out of the shuttle would provide momentum as well. However the primary force behind their ejection is the mag-release. Not sure if that matters much to you, Jeremy, but there is at least some explanation behind what is happening in the scene. Great review!

      +Christian Tyler Hannah That's fantastic but...do you actually LIKE the rest of the Trek setting?
      Most people draw a very firm line between the JJ-verse and the other 9 movies and 748 episodes of television.
      JJ-verse is...well, Star Wars. It's fun and exciting and slickly produced sci-fi action. But it is completely separate in tone to the rest of the Trek setting (generally much more cerebral, slower paced, less action-forward, more talky...and frankly smarter--or at least it tried to be smarter whether it succeeded or not).
      Nothing wrong with liking one, the other or both but they are VERY different.

      ***** That's "Trekkie" not nerd.
      And also, kirk left some pretty good marks on 4 guys at once in that bar fight before he was finally pinned and had the crap beaten out of him.
      Kirk grew up as a tough guy, and I would bet you $1000 that he got into a LOT more fights than Spock did growing up!
      Also, Spock as a kid had total surprise when he tackled the bully, thus throwing his opponent off balance. That kind of advantage is almost an instant win.
      Also, I am basing my argument off the Original show, where Spock was baffled by human fist fighting. A famous quote of his after Kirk decked a guard: "Doesn't that hurt captain?"

      Nemesis was okayish. Just a really unfortunate way for the TNG crew to bow out.

    Just watched 'Star Trek' from 2009 for the first time. Not only was it the first time I watched the film, but it was also the first ever 'Star Trek' thing I have watched. Based on the strength of this movie, I am now a fan of 'Star Trek' and I can't wait to watch 'Star Trek Into Darkness' tonight. Great acting, cool characters and fantastic special effects. I don't know how close to the mythology of 'Trek' it really is, but as a newcomer to the franchise, I loved it.

    I watched it again a few days back. I've never seen the original series, and I can understand fans that nitpick that this Kirk is different than William Shatner's version. BUT, context. I've seen clips of Shatner here and there and he appears like he's in his mid-30s in the original show; Kirk in this movie is in his mid-20's at least, and it's not out of the question that he was a bit of a playboy 'back in the day'. Along with that, history was changed; Nero goes back in time and Kirk's dad gets killed off, and Kirk grew up without a dad to look up to, and in a dysfunctional home. By Star Trek: Beyond, Kirk's matured in my eyes, he's a respectable and responsible Captain; the kind of progression that would lead to him becoming Shatner's version of Kirk.

    7:15 Vulcan being destroyed was great. What makes a good movie, for me, is not everything going perfect and everything being fixed, but for everything to happen in a way that allows misses and hurdles to happen.

  • @MasterCleife
    @MasterCleife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the skydiving scene i think maybe pike brings the shuttle to a complete stop before releasing them, taking away any orbital velocity. This would make them fall towards vulcan but at a rate that wouldn't cause a lot of heat build up. Think of the guy who jumped from the red bull balloon.

    Where did you get this info?
    Have you read the 'Star Trek: Countdown' comic? It was written by Orci, Kurtzman-- the same writing team behind the 2009 film and released before the film.
    It outlines that the Hobus star system goes supernova and the resulting shock wave wipes out the Romulus system.
    It's annoying that this wasn't properly explained in the 2009 film due to time/editing/pacing, but it has been outlined in expanded universe

    Other corrections: a human sky-diving from space wouldn't burn up because they won't go anywhere near fast enough. That effect is caused by the object moving to fast or being to un-aerodynamic for air to pass around it. In-atmosphere skydivers skydivers reach terminal velocity in a much thicker part of the atmosphere than that away team would have and they're not charred when they touch down. Also, warp travel is done by compressing space around the ship, so the occupants aren't going splat.

  • @BruceDLeeStudio
    @BruceDLeeStudio 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct me if im wrong by I dont think they would go "splat" because the concept of warp drive is bending space in front of and behind the spacecraft and transporting it without directly affecting the ship. Its essentially bending space to shorten the distance almost. The people inside the spacecraft wouldn't be affected, as u see in the movie

    I waited seven years for this movie. SEVEN. YEARS. And yet, somehow, I was the fifth person in line at the theatre. Four hours early, and I was still the fifth in line. Be that as it may, I loved the hell out of it. Took my mother to see it on Mother's Day. And took my bro to see it on his birthday. It was the Month of Trek...and it was good.

    Hey Jeremy. I am a huge Star Trek fan and would like to clear up some confusion you might have regarding the Hobus Supernova. According to the official prequel comic (Star Trek: Countdown) and Star Trek Online, which takes place decades after the destruction of romulus, it is discovered that a device containing several volatile materials from the Star Trek Universe was fired into the star by the Iconians as part of their plot to take over the universe.

    I AGREE! No matter how hard I tried I couldn't find a thing about the movie to complain about. The characters, humor, balance between action and drama is every bit as good as the first movie but everything is bigger, more bombastic and more thrilling. The villain was fantastic too, unlike the first one. I just kept thinking "awesome", "awesome" and "awesome".
    Just the intro scene floored me, it brought up a big smile on my face and that smile remained throughout the entire film.

    about the skydive from space. The reason most things burn up when they hit the atmosphere is that they are moving extremely fast. For instance when skylab fell it was moving fast enough to almost stay in space (orbit) shich is about 24000 mph. If you entered the atmosphere moving much slower the burn won't happen till you get moving fast enough for friction to ignite you.

    you mentioned the "supernova wiping out the galaxy" and if it were a normal Supernova, yeah, no it wouldn't have. But these are details delved into in "Countdown" and "Star Trek Online" in that this isn't a simple Supernova, but a Subspace shockwave fueled by protomatter (remember the Genesis device from Wrath of Khan?). And the space jump, the drill was stationary, not at orbital velocity. They aren't falling at 17k mph, so the burn-up is negated.

    I recognize that Nero is a weak character, but I didn't mind him for 2 reasons. 1. Eric Bana nails it. 2. He creates a connection between Kirk and Spock: George Kirk sacrificed himself fighting Nero to save Jim and his mom and he killed Spock's mom and destroyed his planet.
    Fantastic review as usual Jeremy :)

    It's crazy that Mr. Jahns hasn't changed in his style of analyzing movies and the scenes that make them up, and yet he's still TOTALLY relevant in his analysis. I fully accept this may be a dovetail of taste. Jeremy just seems to have the same taste in movies as myself, which is useful to me, as a review.
    Edit: I did like Eric Bana as Nero.

  • @LostMercenary99
    @LostMercenary99 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Supernova was actually a very rare type of star that when going nova doesn't dissipate but consumes everything it engulfs as fuel and spreads and spreads and spreads until the entire galaxy is gone. It went down in the Countdown tie in comic and it also gave Nero so much needed characterization. Also it seems supernovas like that one do exist but not to galaxy killing degrees.The biggest was theorized to have been 300 light years big.

  • @Madness58741

    look into it. i don't know much about it myself, but i do know that space and time (spacetime) can be can be bend or "warped." but this would require a ton of energy which i believe they make by clashing together matter and anti-matter. which causes in theory the amount of energy needed to warp space. this warp shortens the distance between the ship and it's target by a great deal allowing them to travel faster than the speed of light without breaking the laws of physics.

    Them skydiving onto Vulcan, its the depressurisation and the gravity that propels them toward it, and they don't burn up because they're not moving fast enough to generate enough friction with the atmosphere to produce that effect. Warp Drive isn't fatal to the crew because of the ship's inertial dampeners.

    Hi Jeremy
    Fantastic review of Star Trek, I got to hand it to you, you really know how to sum up Movies very well. I absolutely loved this movie, and the humor was also great. The scene where Kirk gets injected by Bones and faints is so hilarious. Overall I think it was an awesome movie, and I'm glad they brought back the phaser guns as well. I wonder how the cast used for the J.J. Abrams' Star Trek will do if they make a new series out of it? That would be really interesting.

    A friend of mine thinks that Cumberbatch might actually be Jean-Luc Picard from the future, primarily because we see a giant-ass Enterprise-looking ship attack Kirk's Enterprise in the latest Into Darkness trailer. The timeline was forever changed with Nero, so who knows, maybe Picard is evil in this new timeline. Probably not the case, but fun to speculate!
