- House of the Dragon season 2 episode 6 scene of Larys Strong visiting King Aegon II Targaryen and telling him that Aegon will never be whole again and all that remains is his mind which can't be dulled by milk of the poppy. Larys tells Aegon about his birth and his foot and how Aegon will be understimated by everyone. Larys then tells Aegon that his life is in danger from Prince Aemond before Aegon begs Larys for help.

This might be the only time Larys has truly connected and empathized with someone else. How sad is it that Larys of all people was able to give Aegon exactly what he needed when he needed it yet his own family has always been absent. The tears running down his face as he was talking was so good. Then letting Aegon know that now he has to be strong and he has to use his mind.
While it is clear that Larys is only manipulating the vulnerable Aegon here, you are right that there is a part of him that genuinely empathizes with Aegon, probably because they are both cripples that are not taken seriously by other members of their family

He dumps his own story on him in order to gain leverage. He’s manipulating a dragon fire survivor to gain political importance AFTER Aemond treated him like smallfolk.
This is not empathy. This is abuse.
Larys MIGHT have some genuine sympathy for Aegon, maybe. But everything he said here was calculating. He definitely wants him to survive and eventually get back into power, but with him as the king's most trusted advisor.

Larys genuinely does seems empathizes with him. Why else would he tell him his very personal story of what it’s like to be a cripple, as well as now to use it for his advantage, why else does he give him solid advice on how not to be manipulated by his councillors and why else does he sneak him out of King’s Landing at great personal risk?
@@nelsonchereta816 sure,Larys is loyal to Larys but there is some sincere form of empathy for the Aegon's plight as a cripple. His speech about how they, as cripples completely underestimated and pitied by their surroundings, have their minds as their greatest weapons, was so good for many reasons: It reminded me of Tyrion's pep talks to Jon, and it served as fuel for Aegon's future development into a more hardened, smarter and (mentally) stronger person.
His speech also hinted at some less than ideal upbringing which finally gives some explanation at his ultimate lack of love and loyalty towards his father and brother.
I almost teared up because -1. Larys is truly being honest, sincere, and compassionate. 2. Aegon, although obnoxious and childish didn't deserve this and never wanted any of this. It was forced upon him by his mother and Otto. 3. He may have been a brat to Aemond but I think he loved his brother at heart and never thought he would be so horribly harmed by him.

@@eggheadusa9900yes him flying to battle was his own choice. But he never wanted to be king, it was Otto that laid the groundwork for that to happen and Alicent aided it along. And had aegon never been king like he wanted he never would have need to go to battle

Crippled Aegon II will fight another legendary dragon battle again. I called it legendary because he was crippled riding an already crippled dragon. There was no such thing in the history of Asoiaf that happened. It's also not coincidence that Aegon and Sunfyre have the best dragon rider bond in the story. They're literally fused as one. He defeated a fresh from battle Baela, daughter of Daemon and definitely his strongest offspring. The show will definitely changed it tho because BOOKS ARE NARRATED BY SOMEONE 😂 hell yeah 🤣 only Rhaenyra kissing women power scene ✂ is canon 🤪

Sunfyre also downs another dragon, and possibly another one after that. He’s a mean little cannibal and his flames are so bright that they blind other dragons

Aegon has been one of very few people to tell Larys he is valuable and gave him the MoW position. It's clear why Larys would rather support him over Aemond who just insulted him
He supports Aegon because Aemond doesn't and sees him for what he truly is. I 100% believe if Aemond gave Larys the position he craves, he would've forgotten all about Aegon.

I think one of the running themes for Aemond now that he has power is that he will keep on underestimating people

If you make an enemy of someone, you'd better strip them of any power, lest they retaliate against you. insulting someone with the means to take revenge on you and then letting your guard down is basically the same as giving him a reason and then giving him an opportunity. Aemond is cruel enough to understand this, yet he takes half-measures constantly. If he were smart, he'd have made the Grandmaester his ally by bribery or blackmail, so that Aegon would die, but he lets the Grandmaester try to save Aegon and that risks Aemond's plan to steal the throne.
As for Larys, showing such obvious contempt for Larys will piss him off, and only if Larys is spineless or stupid would that behavior from Aemond go unpunished. Larys is clearly neither, so turning him against you is just turning an asset into an enemy, which you should only do if you can get rid of that enemy easily. You don't need to have the power of audience perspective to know that its a bad idea to piss him off and let him live unsupervised.
Matthew Needham and Tom Glynn Carney were so amazing in this. As soon as they both started cracking it made me tear up a little. His line "you have written yourself into legend. You survived dragonfire." was great. I always love those scenes where evil characters like Larys show their vulnerability because it makes you think that there is a soul beneath the black heart and there is a broken child underneath. We were all innocent before we realised that the world is fucked up. And circumstances do make villains. He mentioned that his father called his leg "sorcery" and that has to get to your head and hurt you and make you bitter because you feel inferior. So this was a greatly written and acted scene. No one is mentioning what a presence Aegon was. The noises that he was making in agony and whimpering and crying were just horrendous. I couldn't bear to hear it. So realistic.

His voice break at 1:48 tells me this is genuine. I think Aegon will take his words to heart and stop with the milk of the poppy and embrace what he is.
WHO he is, not ''what'' he is. poppy milk is for pain, not just for highs, he can't just stop it like that.

Amazing scene for them both. You really saw how Larys actually genuinely empathizes with Aegon, even crying at the pain of what it will feel like for him. Incredible acting
The best liars mix the truth with falsehoods. It’s possible that he is being sincere about the hardships he had to endure because of his deformity. But he only shares them as a means of manipulating Aegon. He doesn’t actually care about Aegon, he just wants him as his puppet. His character is based on Shakespeare’s Richard III. In the play, Richard constantly talks about how horrible his life has been as a hunchback, but only as a way of garnering sympathy and excusing his crimes.
Along with the otto and Aegon scene this is one of the best scenes of the season. I loved it when he didn't let Aegon have milk of the poppy because he wanted him to be clear of mind. Say what you will about Aegon but he is very strong physically to survive what he survived. Even Orwyle said his grace is very strong. Aegon is a strong boy.

He's strong physically and mentally. After the fight with Rhaenys he got more experienced in battle. That is his character development but of course the show will change that shit

No he isn't, Aemond denied him the position he craves , which is why he hobbled to Aegon's bedside, telling lies sprinkled with truth in hope to curry his favour and gain power.
He’s using him to keep his power. It’s Machiavellian. Its not outright harmful or anything but his intentions in being vulnerable and sharing his past was to galvanize Aegon and ultimately keep him in power which is all he craves. If Aemond never dismissed him, he’d have no use for Aegon.
Yeah, I also believe Larys empathizes with Aegon. He was trying to regain power by using Aegon again, but a part of Larys really empathizes with him.

This is honestly the most relatable scene I’ve ever watched in the song of ice and fire universe. A little over a year ago. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I just woke up in pain and couldn’t understand why for weeks. What sucks is that it’s an all of my joints from my ankles, feet, knees, as well as wrist, and hands. To just wake up and be in agonizing pain all because my immune system is attacking my body was absolutely insane. I never thought I would be a disabled person, but the worst part is seeing my family’s response, knowing that I’m in constant agony and there’s nothing anyone can do about it except for medication that only reduces the inflammation that severely damages my immune system. It’s so horrible.
I'm really sorry, I hope you can find the way to strongman your situation and live fully, as this is the only life we have

For your sake and your family's 🙏🏻 But I would also ask - if you haven't already - that you look into lion diet. It's specifically meant to alleviate autoimmune issues. I'm no doctor, so I can't say for certain that it'll help, but to whatever degree that it could improve your quality of life, it's worth at least a try! I know the point of the comment wasn't a cry for help, but you never know
I think Larys was being genuine because he never tried to be sympathetic when he worked for Alicent.
Larys is growing on me a bit. Him and aegon could be a very entertaining duo.

I'd still give it to Veserys's slow walk to the throne in season 1 when trying to save Rhaenyra. This would come second to that.

I love the mix of Larys' sincerity and his sinister smile at the end. Aegon gives me the jaime lannister feeling, once an awful person but he now must reconstruct himself after losing everything. I hope its for evil tho. The greens just keep getting more and more interesting
First time we see humanity in Larys
The acting by Larys' actor Mathew Needham is great here. At 1:46 you can see him reliving the pain, sorrow and humiliation that he has suffered because of his disability. But then at 2:00 you can see how he has channeled all the pain and humiliation into anger and determination to rise above what others expect of him. This one scene made Larys an infinitely deeper character.
And at 1:55 you can see a teardrop. Great acting

I'm not falling for what I now call, "The Deep" trick. (Introduce a character who uncharacteristically commits grape so as to extinguish any empathy for them for the entirety of the series.)
I'm behind Aegon all the way and have been team green since the start.
My absolutely favorite scene in the entire episode. Aegon lays there shattered vulnerable and helpless as a baby, his life is still in danger. In his anguish and desperation he begs Larys for help and Larys looks at Aegon with a little smile and decides to become his ally and help him. Great scene performed beautifully by Tom Glynn-Carney and Matthew Needham. 👏👏👏
Alicent and Larys are praying for Aegon's recovery and trying to get close with him cuz Aegon will actually listen to them. Aegon is influenced easier than Aemond is. As long as ppl say nice things to Aegon, it's kinda easy to win his loyalty. But if you are brutally honest to him in his face (like Otto was) he'll kick you out

Aemond is just a psychopath. Even Tyland and Criston wants Aegon back after Aemond sent them on a suicidal mission

Brutally honest means saying something true, or percieved truth in an aggressive and demanding tone. If you want to speak truth, especially to sway someone or relax, or come to insight.. you so it from a relaxed tone. @@woops9076
The blessing of despair, acursed people like larys come to the realization that the way others can empathize is by suffering the same despair as they have they will pave the way for others to fall so that one day everyone is cursed, if everyone is afflicted by the same curse no one is.
Larys is also kind of similar to Tyrion with the sentiment he tells Aegon to have about his new disability.
they are more similar than you may think, Tyryon killed his own family, his father with a crossbow and his brother and sister with his army wheter intentionally or unintentionally.
I felt sorry for him when he said help me, I didn't care for him up till now.

You can see who the heavy hitters in terms of acting really are. Viserys, Larys, Daemon`s actors have much more experience than anyone else and it shows. Not to say the other actors are bad but these guys are at a league of their own.
Perhaps the only decent thing Aegon did as king was nominate Larys to the Master of Whisperers position.
Yes, Larys is very dangerous, ambitious and unpredictable, BUT he as at least very competent in his job.

It’s very interesting and compelling to watch two villainous characters have this moment, being very human and vulnerable with the added layer of Larys securing himself a close tie and bond with Aegon he could use in the future. Really hope to see more of these two
I won't lie, I've been fairly unimpressed by HOTD so far, especially while I find most of the characters boring and their interactions bland and I just cannot get invested in more or less anything, so I watch it for the dragons :-D But this was a spark of what I loved about GOT, how unlikely characters could bond and you loved it (how many times did that happen in GOT?) and I would go on watching HOTD if only for this scene and possibility of some friendship between these two. Finally something where you could feel the characters were real, vulnerable and made sense. Great scene and perfect actings as well. Hope they go down this path and develop this plot more, please! This was better than like 80% of the episode's other boring dialogue :-D (Sorry, true fans, it's just my opinion :-D)
Beautiful scene. I love how Larys is planting his little seeds of deception in the greens to secure his place. He knows Aemond has a wall that will be hard to enter to manipulate, so he goes to someone vulnerable to secure his allegiance.
That face he makes at the end. like a mask hiding a smile...

Something must have happened in the writing when the show runners lost two episodes from the budget. Pacing is so messed up this season.

One thing that has always been clear that Aegon needs a better mentor. He's never had a good father figure in his life except Cole which is not a great influence. But it's not just about personality but intelligence and wisdom that a king requires that everyone for so many years schemed and plotted to happen but never actually trained him. It is infuriating that everyone has been roasting him for being a bad king - when in Ep 9 he made it very, very, very clear that he was not suited to be a king. They had to convince him hard to take the job. This is the same man who was crying at his coronation. Sadly, this littlefoot here recognises that vulnerability and insecurities. Now we will see a complete different side from Aegon and someone who is interested in actually teaching him as opposed to his mother who basically told him that he will be killed one day and become king and never taught him anything.

Let's not get too emotional. Again, Aegon is so easily manipulated, while Aemond is reading through people.
Larys is doing both, he knows that Aegon is the easiest path to power and he won't betray him or discard him like Aemond, but he also saw himself in Aegon. Westeros is not a good place for people with disabilities or physical flaws

Reading the books yes you're in for a good treat with Aegon because he will do a lot of shit in the future that you'd never expect him to. He is a very unpredictable character.

Guys you are confusing sincerity with good intentions, greatly because Larys’ actor should get an Emmy one day. Larys is being sincere and vulnerable but only to manipulate.

Larys may be truly emphasizing with Aegon and he may be genuine, however, he is obviously there to consolidate his power, especially when Aemond openly threatened him.
Larys, given a taste of real power, will never relinquish it willingly, so he will work against Aemond, for Aegon.
I like how complex they're portraying characters in this show. You hate them one moment, sympathize with them the next. Both Aegon and Larys are "evil" but in this scene you're kinda on their side.
Is Larys truly showing empathy, or does he think that Aegon is a better “path to power” then Aemond?
This is either a heart felt moment. Or some of the most brilliant manipulating ever.
I think the most brilliant thing to me is that it feels like Larys is doing both. Larys knows how it feels, the emotion he has regarding being a cripple and how people treat him seems very real, but at the same time, he’s only having this conversation with Aegon because Aemond shunned and disrespected him.
Seeking his best interest, still, but still having enough heart to converse with Aegon sincerely. I thought this scene was incredible for that tbh. Excited to see where these two go from there.

In the books, when Larys is executed his request is to have his club foot amputated and not buried with him.

@@gfdgfdagfagfa It's really only the Rhyneyra and Alicent scenes that are truly bad. The writers wanted to subvert Fire and Blood by making the 2 queens good-natured but it's just made them dumb and boring.

Aegon is still evil.
Sympathizing with yourself doesn't prove you've changed. He's still failed to sympathize with anyone else, like all the people he burned with his own dragon at that same battle.
He has no concern for the rat catchers or their families. He doesn't care about Otto who he dismissed for being rightly upset by those murders.
This is the problem with selective focus. I didn't need the camera to spend one single second on those Aegon burned or on the ratcatchers families. It's bad. I haven't forgotten he did that.
If you were one of the relatives of the rat catchers that were murdered, you wouldn't be "rooting for Aegon".

Ned Stark beheaded a poor deserter who was scared shitless and had fled after seeing a white walker!!! Jaime killed his cousin, r*ped Cersei next to their son’s dead body and pushed Bran out a window, The Hound killed the butcher’s boy, Daemon killed his wife with a rock !!! Rhaenyra had a servant killed to be able to marry Daemon…Theon killed two innocent boys… This is GRRM’s universe and it is full of grey characters. These characters are fan favorites !! I LOVE Aegon the character in that universe and I’m not sorry. I do feel sorry for him.

Difference is Aegon who has more power always bullys his young brother. Where as Harwin strong never once at least on the show belittle his brother for being born different.
Larys' main gripe with his family was that despite being loved and protected, he was never taken seriously and always seen as weak or needing protection or pity.
Its fascinating to me to see how many people just forget all the horrific things Aegon has done and the fact that he's a terrible person, simply bc some "bad things" happen to him.

Daemon kills kills his first wife, choked his third wife, order to kill a child, dreaming about sexing own mother. But still people loves him. Its pretty normal give sympathise for aegon in this situation
The writers tried to make him worse in season 1 than what he was in the books, so people don't feel much sympathy for him. Also, the world of A Song of Ice and Fire is full of bad people doing something good or having redeemable treats and good people sometimes committing atrocities. Grey characters, there's no such thing as good against evil

I don’t know how else to tell you that it doesn’t matter, lol. He’s not real, how people feel towards fictional characters is not indicative of their true morals.
Aegon’s characterization, especially this season, way more prominently focuses on the “Unloved insecure child who is desperate for love and acknowledgment” side of his character, and less so “Spoiled prince who watches children fight and assaults servants”.
Complex characters will always be received differently. I’m allowed to detest his vile actions just as much as I am allowed to pity him for everything he’s been through. I don’t know why that’s difficult to grasp.
My brother in Christ, we don’t forget. It’s a fictional story with fictional characters. You can root for Daemon like most others and forget that he’s arguably the most evil character in the Dance. We root for Aegon because he’s morbidly complex and is the best written, not because we like his deeds.

A legal one. Rhaenyra and Viserys I violated sacred laws by trying to usurp a noble family and the Iron Throne with bastards. This is a feudal monarchy, and Viserys had his own duties and vows, thus he had no right to abuse his position. Therefore, Aegon's the rightful king who usurped a corrupt heir who is guilty of high treason with her thieving children.
Best part of the episode. Larys and Aegon will manufacture Aemond's demise I bet.
