The most UNDERRATED Total War EVER - A Total War Saga Troy 2023 Review

  • Yes, Troy is actually AMAZING, and I tell you exactly why that is in this video. Troy has always occupied a special place in my heart, and it comes down to one thing - the absolute detail and dedication to creating a holistic package, a game that is so tightly made and focused that everything just fits - and fit they do so well. Troy has the mechanics, the visuals, the vibes, AND the performance any reasonable Total War fan could ever want from their game, and I find that despite Troy being a mythological game, that it serves as an excellent basis - at least campaign wise - for future historical Total War games.
    And so, is A Total War Saga Troy worth it in 2023? Should you pick up on the Steam Spring Sale? Let me know your thoughts about A Total War Saga: Troy and this video in the comments below, and don't forget to leave a like and subscribe to the channel :)

I felt it did a great job enrapturing what a saga title should be. A good short and fun campaign to take breaks between the main game. Also it may not be a historical title, but adding basically and Age of Mythology Total War is a great middle ground. I wish they would model more Saga's like Troy

    Yes, Troy is actually a good "little" Total War. Everything you said is 100% correct! I like almost everything (especially the mix of Bronze Age setting and mythical units), but there are some things that are unfortunately not really good:
    - Unfortunately no Anatolia and the Hittite Empire, as Troy's other opponents.
    - Unfortunately no Egypt/Levante for Memnon.
    - Unfortunately, combat animations and sounds in battles don't look/sounds great, especially the "normal" human units.
    Otherwise: There are two great mods, each appealing to two types of Total War players.
    1.) "Agony" for history fans. Plays like hardcore DeI, new factions and mechanics; no (semi)mythological units so purely historical mode.
    2.) "Extended Factions Mod" for all modes. Name gives it away, new factions like Athens as well as units are delivered.
    PS: I love the soundtrack of Troy... just relaxing. :D

    I don't think the battles are bad or even sub-par compared to the campaign, they changed up the way flanking works so that the nerfs to MD from flanking affect the unit as a whole, not the just the model in thr back of the formation, making pinning and charging much much more effective, and making the front line combat more effective too since the whole unit is weaker as a result of the flank now. It totally changes the pace of the game and makes factions without much ranged units more viable on high diff.

  • @fotppd1475
    @fotppd1475 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I see the game in much the same eyes as you, I love it all, the unique mechanics of each and every hero and their ancient appearance in them, the many different cultures and armies of ancient Greece and its neighbors, how the character and affiliation of each hero is translated in their playstyle, the fact that although there are only 2 factions (kind of) the hero you chose makes the army extremely different than your allies, even the trade system and so much more.
    I'm pretty sure though that if you where also Greek like me you would see an extra love for the game. (we tend to learn much about our ancient past and be proud of it since very young) Also I personally prefer the Trojan factions and their allies (though it is historically debated its quite likely they where also Greek. Hector who is my favorite character has a Greek name after all.)

After looking at the reviews at the time, I decided not to take the time to play it. one of the things I like about your channel is that you always take a unique perspective, and try to convey what the developers vision was for the game and highlight things that most other gaming channels don’t bother with. Once again, you made me interested in playing a game that most people wrote off. You should be getting a commission for this lol. I've been playing as Agamemnon and doing well. I became allied with all the major Danaan factions early on; Pylos, Phthia, Argos, Sparta and Ithaca. I also managed to turn Salamis into my vassal and uphold positive relations with the Greek states that are my neighbors, including Boeotia which starts off pretty hostile but I managed to make them friendly. Hector was harassing Achilles and since I didn't want to let all the Trojan states destroy one of my allies I declared war on them thus beginning the Trojan war. Everything was going well, I sent my armies to attack Trojan lands while using the coordinate military target function to get my allies to deal with any pesky and weak Trojan armies being sent to the Greek motherland. I literally just captured a major city held by Paris in the middle of Anatolia and began building up my third army after capturing a food and copper production settlement but right after capturing the region capital, Sparta, Ithaca and Argos decide to make peace with all the Trojans and don't want to attack the small coalition led by Paris and Hector nearing Mycenae. The problem isn't their army cus I can easily destroy it once my third army is complete, but my issue is that I don't want my allies to sign peace with the Trojans. I assumed that the whole point of this game was for the Greek states to be at war with the Trojans after a certain point with two large alliances clashing and constantly attacking one another. If I'm the only one fighting the Trojans with my two relatively small vassals that is going to be pretty game breaking so I decided to suspend the campaign until I figure this out. I'm sure there is some way to cheese this like making peace with the weakest member of the opposite alliance and then declaring war on Troy again, but I'd like to know why exactly my allies are doing this? It's really annoying, and the only reason I can think of atm is that I have become an 'established threat' in the diplomacy screen, though my reliability rating is very high and all my allies are very friendly towards me. Any thoughts?

      Agreed! I personally would’ve loved formations for shielded spear units especially (spear wall?), just something that would’ve made it a bit more tactical against charging horses or mythical beasts or even arrows honestly

      Actually, Troy has introduced new battle mechanics to total war - Flanking and Weight classes.
      Flanking drops melee defence of whole unit, not just model, therefore your frontline is even more effective. And Weight matters a lot, both in charging, disengaging and dealing with chariots. It is like having a parallel combat triangle on top of standard combat triangle.

    Troy not doing massively well, I expected. Troy being despised, I did not. I really don't understand the vitriol towards Troy: yes the Mythos DLC should have been how the game was released but oh well, it's now a really fun, really interesting game with loads of unique and well done mechanics (some of which even the main line games haven't done right yet) with a gorgeous artstyle across the board and is genuinely one of the most well optimised Total War games, not just in terms of gameplay, but for modding tools as well.

  • @HeloisGevit

    This is hands down the best vanilla historical Total war game right now. It reminds me of Shogun 2 in being highly polished and focused on a specific time and place. But it's got plenty more depth to it both in campaign and battles. I briefly tried it at launch and disliked the 'truth behind the myth'. Came back after they added the proper historical mode and I absolutely love the direction they've taken with the generals and their bodyguard unit, and the focus on various types of infantry. And the battle maps are the best in the series, clearly learned from their work on TW Arena.

    This game deserves more praise and attention, so this video is very welcome. Though I don’t understand why you (and many others) find the battles to be meh. The more I play Troy, the more I find it to have the best battles in all Total War (though I only play Truth Behind The Myth mode) because all unit types work (on legendary), maneuvering is very important to success, sieges are good, single entity units aren’t OP, and the AI isn’t a hillcamping nightmare. Great game.

    • @emanuelalfred1565
      @emanuelalfred1565 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I’ve been trying to figure out this complaint. I’ve played every Total War besides Empire and Napoleon. In those gunpowder focused games I never attempted a campaign yet just custom battles. I’ve really enjoyed the combat and the time infantry types and weight classes play. Selecting them with more attention really adds more tactical depth in conjunction with the battle maps. I like how I’ve been able to squeeze out victories with lesser quality troops using maneuvers and strategies on the field.
      I’ve seen some people mention the unit collision, noting routing units going through their line then coming back to flank them. I don’t have this happen to because I usually have units chase them down, time the mass route well, or the unit takes so long to come back after a route that I can reposition my troop. I tend to use guard mode on my front line units as well, so I don’t expect them to chafe or engage the routing unit . If I give them the order to attack after the unit routes, I haven’t notice the enemy unit running through them without suffer heavy casualties.
      Some complain of the lack of cav. How common was cav back in this time period?

    • @viamdolor9226
      @viamdolor9226 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nobody seems to be able to explain why they don't like Troy's battles. Everyone mentions this collision thing, but that's such a minuscule part of the battles it's a shame to even bring up. I'd say they just don't know how to engage with the battles and don't know units have types that actually matter for once. I.e. it's a git gud situation.

    • @emanuelalfred1565
      @emanuelalfred1565 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@viamdolor9226 I had the same thoughts as you. I’ve actually enjoyed the battles. The unit roles are not so cut and dry. There are many factors that help change the battles up. I think what some people don’t like are the animations. I’ve seen comments made about the way units fly back when hit by missiles or some of the kick animations.

    After being pretty much obsessed with total warhammer (thousands of hours) because of my preexisting taste for the setting, I realized I had Troy about a year ago and tried it because I was feeling like I kind of got into a rut of just doing the same thing in total warhammer. And I was absolutely blown away. *Everything* was more in depth than warhammer. The factions, though not different as dwarfs and lizards and elves, *felt* more different, and in depth, with positioning of units and the battlemaps mattering more, with the complex economic system and the fun god mechanics - and the monsters felt better in this spinoff game, where they were DLC, than they do in total warhammer!
    That started my journey throughout the rest of the franchise. Total War Three Kingdoms is my new favourite in the series, but I've played Attila, Rome 2, Shogun 2, etc (of those, Attila is my favourite). It's amazing what I was missing and it's thanks to Troy that I got into those in the first place. Now, while warhammer's games are easy to turn my brain off and thus I can get 'more time' out of them, the other games are simply more complex and interesting. Seeing how people were so negative on troy in places I talked to about it, I plan to play Pharaoh as well soon, because I like the bronze age - and a lot of criticisms I've seen of it that are given from warhammer fans seem to be bad faith in my opinion.
    Unfortunately, I think marketing is a big part of it. They don't know how to market the mechanics of these games that people actually like them for - so the big monsters and fantasy of warhammer is what attracts the most attention. And with all that, I'm hopeful that CA Sofia get to be in charge of a gunpowder era game which has all the good of their games so I don't ever have to play the bloody Empire again to get my 30 years war fun. Though i'd also love a three kingdoms-mechanics game set in korea, china, and japan in the 1400s-1500s to have the gunpowder era going into full swing

    I played troy a lot before the mythos expansion, never tried it again after release because of time and money. But I absolutely loved the economic system, it made diplomacy finaly be something interesting, where you would find yourself negotiating with everyone so you could be able to get that unit, building or tech. And in the mean time you plan your conquest so you wont break after de deal expires. Wish all total war games had that mechanic, for me it was a great improvment.

    We need a good game that is based on real world mythologies, just like Age of Mythology did, and the concept is actually really good, as it actually bends our reality and gives a fantasy-reality hybrid, and it fits the antiquity really well, sadly after Age of Mythology no one did that, but since Age of Mythology retold is one it's way I think there's might be a revival to this concept

    What I think is especially underrated is the game's historical mode which like Rome II I really like how you can change the unit type of your leaders so maybe one day they are leading a band of infantry while another, they are fighting on horseback or chariot for speed and mobility. Not like Three Kingdoms or Shogun II or where you are mainly stuck with cavalry who can dismount.

    Troy truly is a fantastic game. I thought I wouldn't spend too much time on it after I went back to it with a gap of a year. Ended up adding 50 hours in the space of a week playing as Agammemnon. The visuals are fantastic, AI is solid and challenging. The different mechanics for each lord is amazing. Actually looking forward to buying the DLC and further enjoying this masterpiece.

    Troy is one of the best TW games made in recent times in my opinion for the same reasons you mentioned. It has its own personality, amazing art and UI style, new mechanics on both campaign and battle. The new resources being tied to settlements, interesting new factions and religion mechanics, terrain changes, general/hero archetypes. And all this from "just a saga" game. I simply don't understand the bad reviews it gets.
    I wish the next historical TW game is made with the same effort and passion as Troy. And of course, I wish the next TW game is made with a new engine built from the ground up. I believe most of TW game issues and bugs arise from poorly built old engine with spaghetti code.
