Logged about 70 hours into the game and I really want to hand it to CA. They really turned this game around and I really like what they have done so far. 10/10 would download for free again.
@@xxzvdogxx I felt the same. It almost feels wrong to get such a good game for free... then I think of all the DLC (that should have been in the base game) I've bought for the other games in the total war franchise and feel a bit better about it all.
Let's appreciate the time and money they put into fleshing out each and every character and faction in the game. 5 years ago, you'd basically have a map with factions on it, all with the same mechanics and 80% of the same units
The Assuwan League isn't from the Iliad I think, it's actually historical and it's based on a Western Anatolian confederacy of Luwian cities that also included Wilusa, the likely candidate for the historical Troy. The league existed as an attempt to resist Hittite dominance in the region, and according to Hittite sources it sometimes fought with and against Mycenaeans as they were trying to expand into Western Anatolia both against the Hittites and the local peoples.
Oh dude thank you very much for the correction on that. I wasn't 100% sure when I spoke. I do know that the Hittites were the main opposing force to the Western Analotians, so thanks for clearing everything up :)
yeah it's likely the trojan war was really the Luvians vs the Hitties and the Greeks were on the Trojan side. I suspect that the Iliad was really an Anatolian / Luvian tale and it was later adapted by the Greeks.
Sarpy is my dude. I just built him as a morale, armor, and defense bomb. Surprisingly good at dueling. The morale bombs can straight up win battles. This game feels really solid im pumped for Warhammer 3.
Firstly thank you for the excellent video. You have one of the most informative channels about total war and bannerlord i have come across on youtube. I think that a cool idea for a DLC in the future would be for them to do the Aeneid. They could craft a story about Aeneas and how he fled Troy to establish a colony in Italy which would later become Rome. Perhaps we could even see Romulus and Remus as characters in the game.
The gameplay feels new and i like the new mechanics they added, i really like the mythical warriors and god praising bonuses. They created a mix between the original historical total war games and warhammer series. I didn’t expect it would be this good.
I am an Danaan guy, I love the Acheans and when I first started the game I started as Achilles my favourite hero of all. His campaign was difficult for me and I drop it after 30-40 turns cause of wars against me. Then I started again as Hector and man is one of the best campaigns so balanced and lets you do your staff and dominate. Btw amazing video. Good job
Paris is ironically one of the more battle focused heroes, his unique mechanics are mostly not very good (unlike Hector where being Priam's heir can feed his Assuwan league mechanic well) but he gets a power unit in tier-3 Trojan nobles. He just needs gold, lots and lots of gold to train them.
I’m a long time total war fan and I was worried about this game but I said you know what it’s free I’m gonna try it and I’ve been playing this non stop. Wish it wasn’t so cartoony but you get used to it, I definitely recommend this even at regular price
One problem with Sarpedon and his precious resources is that other faction deplete them as well. And raid or sacking settlement don't give you precious resources. In turn 60 most of the precious resources in my reach are depleted already...
Solid informational video. Not sure if it was random or because of selecting being a veteran of TW games when first logging into the game, but I was thrown into an Agamemnon campaign right off the bat, so it's cool to get a quick overview of what the other factions offer.
I'm not a fan of sarpedon, and I find Paris to be really weak. I love hector's campaign and my favorite for the Trojans is aeneas because of his ability to get dirt cheap stacks of decent infantry.
I don't think the Assuwa league was mentioned in the Iliad. It was actually taken from Hittite documents about a league of city states in Eastern Anatolia that opposed them, one of which was Wilusa, which we think is Ilios/Troy.
at first I didn't take this game very well, but as soon as I started playing and after 50-60 tourns I realized that I liked the game)) and it's cool!)) the game makes the player look at the Total War games in a new way, and that's good
Its worth popping into Diplomacy as Hector or Paris and checking out how much gold your brother has. If he's got 300 less you should probably try and off load the gold so he can't accuse you of greed. Likewise if your brother has a lot of gold see if you can find something to spend your gold on until you have 300 less so you can accuse him of greed!
Really glad I found your channel. Been wanting to dive deep into this game and coming from TW: Rome the game has gotten so much deeper. Really appreciate this!
Hector has the strongest heavy infantry in the game (as the author says) but they require a lot of resources to maintain, this puts the player under pressure)) what to do... and that's cool! I played for Acheles and I could not destroy one such detachment of heavy infantry against him, there were two of my detachments and they both fled)) and the detachment of elite spearmen remained in battle))
He is pretty OP once he got a chariot all I had to do was send him and a minatour and he managed to kill almost 700 people by himself and won an entire siege
@@unknown_er5994 I wiped out Hectors entire late game army with just Achilles...also finished with full HP becasue regeneration. He can also field an entire late game army for just 270 food and 14 bronze, I'm talking all elites and reinforced chariots. Achilles is so OP and fun, only troy campaign i finished
I have done my first campaign with Anean, and I don't quite agree with the comments on the mission given by reading the omen. They are mainly all the same: "have 150 gold at the beginning of the turn", "defeat general X in battle", "raze or loot city X", "raid province X". And the bonus is always the same: 60 favor for a specific god. What it does is help you achieve the part of his homeric victory about getting 300 favors with every god, as well as counterbalance his other mechanic that makes you lose 10 favor with every god when you activate it.
I like the list of Trojan heroes, they just forgot to put the queen of the Amazons Penthesilea and Memnon, the Ethiopian hero who fought alongside the Trojans in the Trojan War.
I’m lmfao at all the people who were shitting on this game for months up to its release and now have to eat their words. CA has done a great job with this game
In my Diomedes playthrough Paris keep sailing around at war with my acheans allies, only for the lonely debuff of helen to trigger, the ai transport helen to one of the settlement he took close to achilles, only for that settlement to get destroy and later recolonize by paris allies and then get constant sack and raze while helen is still present there lmao.
Paris is going to hurt for stone and gold if you don't get that harpy nest settlement early on. It's mostly to do with my skill level but usually the two makarians will tag team against you and eliminate your main army
Since Hector, Paris and Priam can appear in Aeneas's pool of ghosts and assuming the Danaans don't send them to Hades first. Does this mean you ought to wipe out your Trojan allies in order to reap the benefits from them as Stygian Voices?
Forgive my ignorance, this is my first time playing this type of game. But 8m confused as to whether I should conquer nearby regions by force or by diplomacy. I'm playing Sarpedon campaign btw. Thnx for the video, very helpful
Depends, if I remember correctly any factions of your culture group can be confederated but it takes time and investment in building up relations with them. I'd recommend conquering anything not in your culture group and try to confederate any of your same culture allies as long as you have a way to become significantly stronger then them otherwise they won't confederate if they are stronger than you.
Only played as Hector so far and about 90 turns in and now King of Troy and most of Anatolia which is cool. But holy crap Paris' Helen my Love mechanic looks annoying as hell

collecting dust! it just came out brother! :) give it a whirl! it might be a little overwhelming in the beginning, but i think you'll really enjoy it if you're into strategy + the trojan war. thank you so much for watching!
@@italianspartacus well I'm not interested in that period for one bit, and the fact that they make it a hybrid of fantasy and historical makes it even worst for me, some mythical units are actually laughable to look at, Centaurs and Harpies are by far the most laughable to me (not by their stats but looks)
Hello everyone. I have 2 questions-probably silly but anyway. If I'm playing as hector and my brother gain the throne before me I will lose? And also, if the Greeks conquer the city of Troy I will be able to fight to take it back from them? Thanks in advance and of course awesome video!
Ahoy brother! So I think in both instances, the game is "over" but I'm also not 100% sure. You might get a grace period to try and take back Troy OR usurp your brother
I like it It's like total war arena, very competitive and hard actually It's unlike any other TW I've played and I own all of them and have been playing the franchise for around 13 years or more This one is by far the hardest in terms of battles. It's a very rock, paper, scissors mechanism that is great for balance/competition pvp It's very hard to cheese in battles, the game is very dependent on morale and flanking is massive here. No cav makes it easy to balance, but hard to kill off retreating enemies, so definitive victory is hard Warhammer is a different game, but I think both have a bad archer mechanism, attack...it's very hard to use a archer hero without getting destroyed
Solid game but historic period doesnt interest me and the unit roster is pretty bland. Warhammer has destroyed historic total war for me. Unless they bring out empire or napoleon 2, then im on board.
Honestly... I'm liking it WAY MORE than I thought I would and WAY more than I did when I first tried it. I think the fun of the campaign map is what really sells me
I actually did, but his mechanics are SO straight forward. I try not to labor a point so that it makes the video longer! I want to try n cut to the information quickly so you can get into the game and enjoy, bratan! :)
I don't know why, but hearing about Paris' dating sim campaign mechanics made me think of CA porting them over to Vlady Daddy and Isabella's campaigns.
My main criticism of troy is that it takes too much from Warhammer in the battles area- specifically models. All of the models use warhammer skeletons (or what the thing is that determines how a model is animated). The centaurs are just marauder skirmishers, etc I guess it's like, a tiny complaint, but it is super grating lol. Makes it feel like it's not its own game in a way. You don't really get that in the campaign map, though, and I like how stylistic the game is.
I love you brother.. But you definitely did.. Is it worth a full $50?? Ehhh.. Only if you like the Era (which I do). But for free? Holy shit. So worth it Hahahaha
@@italianspartacus I love the era too but I hate this "True Behind the Myth" approach, like if you want to do the Illiad you gotta have the myth, it's everywhere, if you want to go Bronze age, then do a Bronze Age Civilization Collapse game with Sea people as the stand-in for late game event and be done with it. Also, fuck the Epic Store.
CA need to remember one thing that made Total War games great and different was BATTLES, unlike the Paradox nonsense that is all about micro managing logistics and calling it grand strategy. I am sure Napoleon & Alexander had people to micro manage food and resources but that is not grand strategy. I've played Troy for nearly 30 hours, bought the Amazons DLC, seems pointless, the aim seems to be to work towards saving Troy from their inevitable invasion by Greeks, but then I thought what have the Trojans ever done for us. Back to Attila and Ancient Empires2 to fight some battles. Seems like only the modders know what the Total War fans want anymore.
The point of the game isn't to save troy. It's to ward off the Greeks from capturing your lands and coming for you. Even though homers work is based on a pointless war. The main premise of the historical Trojan war was the subjugation of the people ruling Ilion by the Greeks and the Hittites that's why you see the "securing" the eastern flank mission in hectors campaign. The Amazons however seem have have been a separate people with a separate goal
This game is kind of broken right now. 3-5 Chariot unit cards can DESTROY 2 full stacks of an army and you can literally steal other faction's resources with barter agreement. If CA fixes these issues, this game would be much better.
First playthrough as Hector: Excited to create an army and defend against the Spartan hordes. The hordes never arrive and my allies are too strong. I gain map data via Military Alliances and suddenly I see that everyone is having a colonisation free for all on Greece a la Africa in the age of European colonization. Everyone's just carving it up and I am just sitting there, island hopping my way across for my own slice. The spartans never came and the thousand ships that sailed for Troy actually sailed the other way to conquer Greece. I am kinda disappointed at how easy it was to steam roll the enemy. The entire East is my ally and no one has any threats besides greek mainland. Honestly, I blame the auto battle system being broken. Huge armies just steamrolled by my allies due to auto-calc. I want mods.
This game is super hard compared to Rome 2. The political system is a mess in this game and makes little to no sense. I'm playing as Paris with all the Trojans as my my military allies yet I'm the only one out of them fighting the Greeks and I can't get any of my allies to join the fight, what is the point in having military allies? Also resource system seems like it needs a fix, I can have 3 or 4 provinces yet only still be able to afford 2 proper armies?
Especially with settlements that cannot defend themselves or hold long enough for your army to reinforce, despite having a defense building, it would be nice if armies were cheaper. I see the AI field 2 full stacks and 3 half stacks, while I can only field 1½ stacks with 3 fully upgraded food provinces on hard difficulty. So I conquer with my faction leader, and press the panic button and summon Hero+Cyclops when an enemy ignores my army to beeline towards my home province.
One or two armies is all u need, even on legendary difficulty. Unless u r spamming dardanian mobs, then u can get like 5 or 6 armies. The game is actually quite easy once u learn to stack all the pertinent buffs. And if u quickly complete the epic quests for a homeric victory u can end the campaign in less than 100 turns with some factions.
How about none of them? "Truth behind the myth" is probably the stupidest route they could have gone with this, not to mention making it EGS exclusive. I will *NEVER* use that platform, no matter how many free games there might be.
The truth behind the myth aspect is honestly my favorite aspect. This isn’t Bronze Age Total War. It’s basically Homer’s Iliad total war, which was created in the 9th century BC, 300+ years after the Trojan War. That’s why the imagery is all black figure Greek pottery when none existed in the Bronze Age. That’s why the “giants” are really just big dudes, and not actually all that giant, and the centaurs are just the only horse units in the game. All the divine bonuses make some sort of sense while still having a semi-magical element. It works very well, and considering you haven’t even played the game, you’re just hating on it for some personal reason or another.
2021 UPDATE: This is still relevant for Mythos :) There's not much that has changed with ANY of the characters.

Question if Paris beats you to become the heir of Troy does that mean that Paris takes control of your faction? Sorry if this was asked already!
Hello friend and thanks a lot for your reply! Yeah, I think in both cases the player will loose but the hope dies last😜
Haven't played yet. It looks so complicated that I'm afraid to start :-/
Are people liking Troy? I didnt hate it but I found myself back on warhammer 2 total war pretty quick.
I like it
It's like total war arena, very competitive and hard actually
It's unlike any other TW I've played and I own all of them and have been playing the franchise for around 13 years or more
This one is by far the hardest in terms of battles. It's a very rock, paper, scissors mechanism that is great for balance/competition pvp
It's very hard to cheese in battles, the game is very dependent on morale and flanking is massive here. No cav makes it easy to balance, but hard to kill off retreating enemies, so definitive victory is hard
Warhammer is a different game, but I think both have a bad archer mechanism, attack...it's very hard to use a archer hero without getting destroyed
I think it's great. Obviously won't compare to warhammer because it's just a saga and not a full release but there are a lot of cool mechanics
At the moment it's a bit more fun than warhammer. Gonna play a few campaigns before I go back.
I think the fun of the campaign map is what really sells me
How take village?
You didn’t like Hector campaign - he seems so small at the preview compared with the others - did you?) That tells)
Nice video though
I actually did, but his mechanics are SO straight forward. I try not to labor a point so that it makes the video longer! I want to try n cut to the information quickly so you can get into the game and enjoy, bratan! :)
Where are all the mystical units?
i am so lost when it comes to this game they switched up so many basic mechanics
why is priam not in the game?
his days of war are over i'm afraid!
@@italianspartacus so the "troy" faction is AI controlled?
"Hangry" hahaha
they need to add an option to disable myth units. I want to play a relatively historical campaign without the myth units
this conflict is r... stupid that i find myself only being able to play Odysseus xD
I don't know why, but hearing about Paris' dating sim campaign mechanics made me think of CA porting them over to Vlady Daddy and Isabella's campaigns.
Would be a cool idea.
You don't really get that in the campaign map, though, and I like how stylistic the game is.
the campaign map is just SO gorgeous. i totally agree, the battles are a bit wonky - but the campaign map is where the game thrives
Warhammer has the best battles so that a good thing I think
it helped me so i commented
Thank you! glad to help my brother :)
Pious Aeneas for me
Spartacus stop this BS I don't wanna feel like I make a mistake by not getting this game when it was free.
you done goofed
I love you brother.. But you definitely did.. Is it worth a full $50?? Ehhh.. Only if you like the Era (which I do). But for free? Holy shit. So worth it Hahahaha
@@italianspartacus I love the era too but I hate this "True Behind the Myth" approach, like if you want to do the Illiad you gotta have the myth, it's everywhere, if you want to go Bronze age, then do a Bronze Age Civilization Collapse game with Sea people as the stand-in for late game event and be done with it. Also, fuck the Epic Store.
@@aguscm4175 ..and how long before someone mods the Myth in?
@@aguscm4175 I think you're looking for things to hate. Stop and enjoy things instead of picking them apart!
Just leaving this here to help 8]
I've played 3 campaigns and all were rewarding although not really exciting after getting troy or looting Mycenae
me likey Itspa
This game is kind of broken right now. 3-5 Chariot unit cards can DESTROY 2 full stacks of an army and you can literally steal other faction's resources with barter agreement. If CA fixes these issues, this game would be much better.
@ 14:48 funny
Hector is da best
I forgot to comment!
(Or did I?)

Yo, ill check back on this in a year when it's out on steam and out of the hands of the PRC.
The game is painstakingly boring. I wanted something more historical or full mythic IMO.
First !
Honestly who asked for this game? Medieval 3!!!!!
How about none of them? "Truth behind the myth" is probably the stupidest route they could have gone with this, not to mention making it EGS exclusive. I will *NEVER* use that platform, no matter how many free games there might be.
Get over it man, lmao crying over a “platform” a true total war fan would never give up a new released tal war game day one for free. You’re an idiot
