A beautiful song, by a very talented man. He was singing these songs when I was in my teens. Now at 66 I am approach the end of my life due to pulmonary fibrosis, Cat as he will always be in my heart, keeps me company on this journey.

Music is such a powerful force. I truly believe it will extend your life beyond what the doctor say. Cat Stevens is such a great musician; too bad about the mess he created back in the "Rushdie days." He has repented and continues to carry his beautiful music with him. Stay strong and let the music play as much as possible. Oh yeah, be sure to sing with it as loudly as you can - sort like dance like nobody's watching.

As a teen I was always sad and couldn't understand why, yet this song brought comfort to me. I'm 41 now and diagnosis with Bipolar Disorder and this song still comforts me, during my low fazes.
Lisa Henness i was abused as a child and had no idea how much my sadness showed until my husbands mate bought me a copy of this and said everytime he heard it he thought of me not just for the name but my eyes! blew me away someone could see it.

When I was a little girl in the 70s my daddy would sit on my bed at night and play and sing this and other Cat Stevens songs on his acoustic to help me fall asleep. Now 47, Its probably the only good memories I have and I will cherish them.
My dad used to play his guitar and make up silly songs for us at bedtime, too.It was really nice and is also a cherished memory.We were very lucky to have that experience.My mom also sang for us, folk songs and songs from musicals.I've had a lifelong love of all kinds of music because of that.😥😍

I have suffered from depression many years, and i thought no one from my family really understands how it feels. Then my dad sent me this song, now i know that he can see my pain..
Julia, depression often makes you feel alone, trust me when I say you are not alone. My neck collapsed in 2003 severing and crushing nerve fibres. Neck was repaired but the pain was left. Despite all the drugs, therapy and counseling depression set in. 5 years ago I was classified as terminally ill with non-alcoholic cirrhosis and pulmonary fibrosis, to which there is no cure or treatment. Music has kept me company as well as my wife and family. However, it is songs like "Sad Lisa" that enables me to reflect upon my pain and depression and makes me grateful everyday I wake up. I hope that in the last year you have found some relief from depression.
Sad update, my dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer that's not curable anymore. My heart is broken, i will always going to miss him so much. I don't know how to live without him.

@@RIDETHESUNSHINE the only remedy is to learn to forgive. people forget that forgiving isnt condoning. when you are hurt by people with no conscience, they dont care about your forgiveness. You do it for your own purposes. its the only way to purge the resentment safely, since they often purge on innocent people (transference). (Christians are required to forgive or you wont be forgiven yourself.) its the single biggest favor you can do yourself and you feel 100% better and far more functional.
I saw an interview ages ago and Cat was asked who Lisa was. He replied it's no one, anyone and everyone ... a ghost. As with all great songs, this one speaks to so many people and conjures many different emotions and memories, each unique to the individual. Never discount anyone else's feelings and emotions. They are real and need no judgement. Many of Cat's songs touched me and got me through a lot of bad stuff over the years. He's still one of my 'go to' guys. I heard this song when I was a little girl, and though I wasn't sad myself, I saw - and still see - sadness all around me. So I related to the perspective of the story-teller in this one. Though I think this song is about mental illness, it's also about isolation of any kind. Sadness is a pure emotion, and in that way is beautiful. Thanks to Cat Stevens (Jusef Islam) for this song, as it is lovely and has always touched me deeply.

I was 13 when this came out but I must have heard it first when I was 17 or so. It hit me hard, the melancholy. Although it isn't my own language. Don't think to much about it, it is about sadness and love. You might see yourself in it or someone you might love and want to help, but it's a personal thing for everyone. I came to this through a cd-review, and was shocked by the impact it still has after decades. I started shedding tears already at the first notes.
Perhaps the song describes paranoia schizophrenia. So sometimes I think this song may be to describe my wife that I love dearly. I will never know, but it helps me realize how much I love her and that I can never leave her because she is my duty to take care of no matter how lonely I may feel. Sometimes she has moments of clarity, and I rejoice...
In about way, in most severe cases, it could be paranoid schizophrenia. Its more like a person who has a split personality; one who is trapped inside. This song is maybe about a Trauma caused in childhood.

It was with great surprise that I learned of Cat's embrace of Islam, a religion that I knew next to nothing of. Having heard his Hebraic references in some of his songs I assumed Cat was of the Jewish faith. Now his memory and music are fading away, only occasionly finding voice in TH-cam. Sad. This music and precious others were the soundtrack to my life, I have tried to share this with my family and friends, particularly with my grandson. Perhaps when I am gone he will recall the music I tried to preserve in him. I can only hope. I have been fortunate in that my extremely broad tastes in music have allowed me to access rare music, including many native songs most people that aren't well informed of. As a musician I have cherished these songs because of their exquisite flavors, new to me so long ago. From bagpipes to electric guitar, Zydeco to symphonies, I have enjoyed the spirit of the Music of the Spheres in every form that I could find. I also appreciate some forms of Rap, it wasn't an easy appreciation, it took time for me. But I am not sorry for my journey, I am simply sad that Cat's music was overshadowed by his choice of faith, which is his right as a free man. I have witnessed the flames of Zoraster, seen the ecstasy of the Sufi, heard the chants of Catholic and Jew, the transport of true belief. There is room in my world for all of these things, and I welcome all.

I heard this song when I was a little girl, and though I wasn't sad myself, I saw - and still see - sadness all around me. So I related to the perspective of the story-teller in this one. Though I think this song is about mental illness, it's also about isolation of any kind. Sadness is a pure emotion, and in that way is beautiful. Thanks to Cat Stevens (Jusef Islam) for this song, as it is lovely and has always touched me deeply.

I was 13 when this came out but I must have heard it first when I was 17 or so. It hit me hard, the melancholy. Although it isn't my own language. Don't think to much about it, it is about sadness and love. You might see yourself in it or someone you might love and want to help, but it's a personal thing for everyone. I came to this through a cd-review, and was shocked by the impact it still has after decades. I started shedding tears already at the first notes.

It was with great surprise that I learned of Cat's embrace of Islam, a religion that I knew next to nothing of. Having heard his Hebraic references in some of his songs I assumed Cat was of the Jewish faith. Now his memory and music are fading away, only occasionly finding voice in TH-cam. Sad. This music and precious others were the soundtrack to my life, I have tried to share this with my family and friends, particularly with my grandson. Perhaps when I am gone he will recall the music I tried to preserve in him. I can only hope. I have been fortunate in that my extremely broad tastes in music have allowed me to access rare music, including many native songs most people that aren't well informed of. As a musician I have cherished these songs because of their exquisite flavors, new to me so long ago. From bagpipes to electric guitar, Zydeco to symphonies, I have enjoyed the spirit of the Music of the Spheres in every form that I could find. I also appreciate some forms of Rap, it wasn't an easy appreciation, it took time for me. But I am not sorry for my journey, I am simply sad that Cat's music was overshadowed by his choice of faith, which is his right as a free man. I have witnessed the flames of Zoraster, seen the ecstasy of the Sufi, heard the chants of Catholic and Jew, the transport of true belief. There is room in my world for all of these things, and I welcome all.
Jorge, rest assured that much of your musical choices will stay with your Family - it's all part of the Cultural Capital that (hopefully) we all learn from. It took a few repeat plays to figure out that Lisa is the ghost of a woman who passed away in whatever house or structure that the songwriter is currently in, and only he can see her, but yet not hear her... She is sad because when she passed, it wasn't her time, yet she wants to leave, and no one really feels her pain...
