I'm so so happy you're trying gel! I've been doing my nails with gel for almost 2 years now, and I promise the cost of the lamp and the gels pay for themselves after a couple of manis compared to a salon. For anyone thinking of switching to gel from regular polish, just remember that less product on the brush is best, otherwise you will flood the cuticle and the sides of the nail. ☺️
Great tips and great point about getting your money back over time, although it is an investment it does save you long term if you're used to going to the salon!
Kelli Marissa For sure! I was spending so much at the salon, & I just happened to come across the lamps and gels at Ulta and went for it. ☺️ Thank you for the tutorial; now I know how to do a gradient with gel!
I had some sensitivity in my nail plate after using gel and I think it was because of the light. Like, even washing my hair made them ache. Is there a kind of light that’s less likely to give me a repeat of this? I really love gel, but I had a terrible time growing out my nails after stopping.
Nail Therapy Studio Sounds like that salon used a UV light. Those can hurt and even burn. LED lamps are the way to go. And it’s faster to cure! So sorry that happened to you!
I watched an interview with one of the pioneers in acrylics, where he touched on why people get reactions to a variety of things like products to UV vs LED lamps & which are designed for what product. She's right in that more lines of gel or acrylics are being designed for use under an LED lamp, but some salons are using a UV lamp & vice versa causing damage, reactions that are either similar to or are allergic & allergies can be developed over time. It was a very in depth & interesting interview, I thought, even though he gets right into the chemical properties of his line, how he came into the industry & all of that. I'd have to research the guy's name, since I watched that this past summer.
Question, how do you do swatches of gel? Do you use a peel off base coat? I've steered away from gel polishes because I can never get them removed without my nails looking wrecked. :/

Hi Kelly love the models one creams I love any polish that's a one coater though.!!! To me any way you can get away with one coat thanks for sharing. I was like you I stayed away from gel polish but since I'm not changing my Manny's all the time I want mine extended but I'm a little disappointed I don't find that I have to soak them off at all I can just peel them off they don't last quite as long as everybody goes on about they do I mean a regular polish you've got chips going on in a couple days if you're having to wash dishes by hand or something but I don't find they last any two to three weeks at all. They peel right off and that's without using a peel off base coat anyway that's just my take on gel polishes so I don't plan on buying ones that are very costly which there's so many and I really prefer the no wipe top coat so there's no messing with alcohol and all that nonsense.lol oh and the fact they dry quickly that's another big plus about the gels to especially if you live in a very humid area winter and summer like I do. Anyway I think gels are definitely a plus I prefer them now.. a lot of times I'll use regular polish and then I'll put a gel top coat that extends the Manny to just by having that no wipe top coat I find it does anyway...lol anyway thanks for sharing and happy New Year to you!❤ sh@#@ all my blabbing I forgot to tell you how beautiful the gradient and the stars look absolutely gorgeous thanks for a great idea
Do you NEED a topcoat for gel polish? I mean.. or are two layers of coloured polishes enough!? Does the gel topcoat has more protection in its chemicals to prevent from chipping or is it better to have less coats?
Good evening, I have a question but I first want to start out by saying that I'm a fan. My question is this... With nail polish becoming more fashionably acceptable for men, what are your thoughts and views on men wearing nail polish?
Hey Joshua! I've actually been asked this before and I considered making a video on it (I still might!) But I don't think nail polish is gendered at all, despite the "feminine" connotation. It used to be exclusively worn by men, after all! I think it's awesome to see more men of every sexuality doing nail art and wearing polish and I've worked in professional fields where I've seen men wear polish too. I've also given friends plenty of "man"icures over the years ;)
Love that you bring this up & love it even more that you're willing to cover the subject with such an open mind Kelli! I just had an unfortunate conversation with my exhusband about gender norming & we have a 10yo daughter. It was brought up because I was learning makeup application techniques from Manny MUA.
I love the polish collection and the nail art bag (which I would want to use as a purse too...haha!)! I also love the gel polish gradient and art that you did; it was awesome and very pretty! I've actually never used gel polish either. I want to, but I've heard that it's a pain to remove. I don't know though. And I'd also get bored with the same color or design after a few days...lol!
@@KelliMarissa Lol...maybe that's what I'll do! That's definitely awesome that it dries so fast. Hm...I think that I'll get peel off base coat and try out some gel polish. :D
Haha glad you liked it :) and I wouldn't recommend mixing regular base coats with gel products because you never know how they'll react. I did use a peel off base coat specifically meant for gels by Madam Glam though, it's great!
How did you get the gel polish off? I’ve tried a couple and it just wrecks my nails soaking them in acetone and I don’t care to keep them on for weeks at a time (but love the quick dry).
You should do what I do and use peel off base coat! I'm the same way, don't love keeping gels on for long but I love the fast dry! I use the one from Madam Glam cause it's intended for gels.
@@KelliMarissa Thanks! I'll have to give the Madam Glam a try. I've tried Unt but it didn't peel (it's possible it didn't dry enough and just mixed with the gel).
Do you use the same finger for all of your swatches? (I love your videos and your hair looks awesome, by the way!) Also, is there a reason why you always keep your nails short? Just curious. :-)
Haha yes I do use the same finger - my ring finger on my right hand! I had them super short for the holidays but I'm actually growing them a tiny bit longer just to try it out. I usually prefer them short though!
Kelly I was on Amazon last night looking at these because I was really impressed with the colors of them. It says that they are harmful to our (aquatic) environment. I don’t know where you stand, but unfortunately I will not be buying. I did learn over Xmas, that glitter doesn’t ever degrade. The nail art you did, awesome, gorgeous, so talented
Hey Joan, that is disappointing to hear! I know that glitter is bad for the environment but unfortunately the nature of being a nail polish swatcher makes it difficult to pick and choose which polishes to swatch since I do full collections. :( I know that the chemicals in nail polish and remover aren't great for the environment in general either but I try to make up for it in different ways in my personal life, by recycling (and composting when I can) and conserving energy.
I think with that wide flat brush you could probably dip one half in the purple and the other in the gold and that might make “gradienting” easier? Just a guess. Ive actually never used gel cause i love regular polish too much.

Thanks Kelli for a great video, loved your nail art design...……..luv from across the pond Xv
I'm so glad you enjoyed :)
Love the gradient!
Thanks so much Laura!
LOVE your hair color and eye makeup :D
Ahh thanks so much!!
Do you NEED a topcoat for gel polish? I mean.. or are two layers of coloured polishes enough!? Does the gel topcoat has more protection in its chemicals to prevent from chipping or is it better to have less coats?
It's usually just as important as regular polish top coat. And it brightens the color and gives it shine.
Gotta agree with Kat here, top coat is always important because it smooths out the manicure, helps it last longer and less prone to chipping!
That nail art tho and the nail polishes 😍😍😍😍💖💖💖 Love the makeup as well. 💜💜💖💖💜💖💖
Oh thank you so much :)
Kelli Marissa No problem :)
I've also given friends plenty of "man"icures over the years ;)
Please do the video on the topic lol no ones really talking about it
Love that you bring this up & love it even more that you're willing to cover the subject with such an open mind Kelli! I just had an unfortunate conversation with my exhusband about gender norming & we have a 10yo daughter. It was brought up because I was learning makeup application techniques from Manny MUA.
The way I look at it is it's just paint, it'll come off so what's the big deal
@@joshuawatts9996 exactly!
Yeah I can't commit anyway so I always use a peel off base coat haha! It dries so instantly though which is awesome.
@@KelliMarissa Lol...maybe that's what I'll do! That's definitely awesome that it dries so fast. Hm...I think that I'll get peel off base coat and try out some gel polish. :D
love the green
Me too!!
You did AMAZING, especially for a first time! Bet you went through a whole lotta UNT with those swatches. Peelies for days!
she's just U.N.T
Haha glad you liked it :) and I wouldn't recommend mixing regular base coats with gel products because you never know how they'll react. I did use a peel off base coat specifically meant for gels by Madam Glam though, it's great!
@@KelliMarissa I heard that one was great from someone else too. Gonna have to take the plunge and get some. Thanks!
Gorgeous Kelli!!💖🌌🌠💅
Thank you!!
Love the design!! How long will this mani last?
It's supposed to last up to 3 weeks but I can't wear any color for that long, I'll get too bored LOL
Love these. So beautiful
I agree!!
Shines Pearl is gorgeous
Pretty night
Oh crap I like em all!
Love the nail art, so beautiful!
Thank you so much!
That nail art is 😍😍😍😍😍
Ahh thank you!!!
Perfect as always! 😍
💕💕💕💕
Do you use the same finger for all of your swatches? (I love your videos and your hair looks awesome, by the way!) Also, is there a reason why you always keep your nails short? Just curious. :-)
Haha yes I do use the same finger - my ring finger on my right hand! I had them super short for the holidays but I'm actually growing them a tiny bit longer just to try it out. I usually prefer them short though!
@@KelliMarissa Okay, cool! Thanks for answering my questions. :-D
Gorgeous!!
So glad you like them!
I've never used gel but i'm tempted just for that white. So many times in the summer I'd like to paint my nails white but it's kind of a pain.
Oh you should def get it! I've never seen a one coat white gel like this!
Do you know if the “sponge trick” can be used with gel polishes to really pack on the glitter?
Honestly I'm not sure, I feel like gel feels so different with application so I feel like it might not work lol
The nail art is so pretty! Nice work! And use that bag as a purse for sure Lol
Haha isn't it so cute??
Gel Polishes are good for that. They don’t dry which makes it super easy to clean up messes and not worry it’s drying.
Yeah it was awesome to use for nail art!!!
Great video. Love your makeup.
Oh thank you so much!!
I think with that wide flat brush you could probably dip one half in the purple and the other in the gold and that might make “gradienting” easier? Just a guess. Ive actually never used gel cause i love regular polish too much.
Haha I am the same way with regular polish. I will definitely play around with more gels though cause it dries so instantly!
Kinda funny, we love regular polish because it dries quickly but we love gel because it doesn’t. Lol
I want my nail polish collection to look like yours in the background 😭 I love gel polish ! I use it more than regular polish
Haha im starting to really enjoy gels too!
Omfg!!!! I need purple ring and Santa claus in my life!!!!!
Awesome choices!!
Kelli help - where do you get ur brushes. am I missing it in the info. LOVE the nail art
Hey Paula! I linked the nail art kit in the description which is where these brushes are from!!
@@KelliMarissa THANK YOU!
They named theirs Diamond Rain but your collab with Starrily was the real DIAMOND RAIN! 🤗
LOL is it embarrassing that I didn't even realize the name of the polish until I was recording my voiceover????
Kelli Marissa Not at all! Your a busy gal lol
Please do more bright make up tutorials
Sure!
Love the polishes and the nail art.. Xoxo
Thanks so much!!
Is that the necklace bae got you for Christmas?? Also, I see the new crayola collection in the background! Are you gonna swatch those?
Haha yes! And yes! That review should be up this week 😄💜💜💜💜
Good job beautiful colors
I'm glad you like them :)
Hey there GALAXY GAL!! I haven't dropped you a line in quite a while and you've been on my mind lately!! Anywhoo.... I love the nail art and commend you on marching to the beat of your own drum! Also the stars were a perfect compliment to the color schemes in your gradient. Honestly(sorry, just a lil disclaimer, lol!!) I dont know why but this nail art look reminded me of Christmas A LOTin fact!!! It looked like what the sky would have looked like when Jesus was born......anyone else feeling that kind of vibe??? Also congrats on the move and I have to say that you seem at least from an outsider's perspective to be happier than I've seen you in quite a while and I'm so glad. Anywhoo, now that written a novel for you(yw,😂😉😂) I'll look forward to hearing back from you!! Oh yeah.....almost forgot!!?!!?!!.
...... out of the 1st set of swatches my absolute, hands down, favorite would be ,and I'm sorry that I honestly have forgotten the actual names of my fave swatches) anywhoo!!! LMAO!!!!] But I loved the purple and oh yeah I absolutely loved the crelly green!!!! It reminded me of a candy apple but green not red. Also I loved the purplishey muted silver color as well. Anyway,I hope that your year is going amazing and until next time........ BYEEEEE!😉!!
Haha well I've got a fun fact for you / that nail art was actually filmed before christmas and was meant to be a christmas mani! I'm glad you liked it :)
Omg, socks for Christmas....I counted all my socks and nicely asked my hubby not to get me socks for Christmas (before Thanksgiving) and he already had bought me 2. I now have FORTY SEVEN pairs of socks! LOL Good thing I love socks😉👍
LOL omg that's a lot of socks!!
I actually only started using gelpolishes last year too ^^"
Haha we are twins!
How
long did it wear???? How was the removal????
I actually don't wear polishes for too long so I couldn't say - I used a gel peel off base coat by Madam Glam though so it was easy to take off!
