  • Every wondered how a clutch fan (viscous hub) fan works, and how to rebuild them? Wonder no more, as we rebuild and test the viscous hub fan in a LandCruiser 80 series to try and cure the car's intermittent overheating.

    Great vid mate, didn't know about the screw adjustments. Those screws stripped out on me too... so I replaced them all with M6 bolts, life long fix!

    One of the best things I've learnt on the interwebs this year is when you're dealing with a reluctant small soft screw or similar fixing, don't use any impact driver but instead, use a regular drill driver with it's clutch set to 'weak as p...'
    With the right size driver bit, I had a very difficult fan-clutch-hub-thingo screw out in mere seconds !! , with no great force or risk of damage.

    I replaced the screws on mine with Alan key bolts. i also put the tubes of silicon fluid in a container of very warm water to make it run easier.

    Well done.
    8 - 10 hp for the fan!! So when I bolted the failed viscous hub solid due to a silicon oil leak I reduced the power from the 2L petrol 21R in my commuter bus from claimed 105hp to 95hp! It was an old donk, with 300k on the clock, so it was possibly closer to 65hp at the flywheel before the fan mod and with the mod, getting down to 55hp...explains why it couldn't exceed 40km/h up steep hills in first! Ahh, those were the days - not.

      Incidentally, and if memory serves me well, the viscous coupling in my HiAce looked exactly like the one you were working on from the outside.

      Probably the same part! The drag from fan is one of the reasons most manufacturers have moved onto electric thermo fans. Cuts fuel consumption and emissions.

      ​@@LockyourHubs4WDing Two bottles of silicon oil is best value, but if the unit was completely rooted and you needed to replace it, would you instead fit the thermatic fans? It seems, under those circumstances, one would put the extra friggin around factor to do the conversion.

      @@BenMitro one reason I like electric fans is the ease with which you could install a switch to cut the fans for water crossing, or even hard wire an on switch if the temp circuit fails.

    I changed my fan clutch of my fj cruiser for a new one. I see that when cold the blades move not so freely and when hot it gets much harder. I have seen that the engine makes more effort and has lost acceleration. Could it be that the hardness of rotation of the blades influences the motor to slow down?

    Cheers, thanks for the video mate, but I had the opposite problem to you.
    I bought a new Dayco clutch and it had too much viscous fluid in it & it wouldn't disengage, constant roaring/ howling so I sent it back & they sent me another one. Unfortunately the replacement did the same, so I opened it up and removed a couple of ounces of viscous fluid & that fixed it. Can only hear it now when stuck in traffic jam or going up long steep hill.
    Tip: if you want that thick viscous fluid to run out of the clutch like water heat it up with a heat gun and it just pours out ( don't worry, it goes thick again when it cools). Also, if the O-Ring seal is stretched & won't fit back in the clutch groove, heat it up also with your heat gun and U can actually see it shrink back to size. I used to boil them which is a lot slower.

      I also bought an aftermarket Dayco fan clutch and found it to be rubbish, never cuts in at all so rebuilt the aisin unit instead. The Dayco units are very hit and miss.

    The only trouble with that test is the factory gauge. Mine doesn't move until around 100°c. Would be good to see what real temp it's reaching.

      Agreed, in my 80 I've got an engine watchdog bolted to the coolant outlet pipe, the temp gauge stays in the middle over a very big range!

    if you don't have the adjustable type, you can add some more oil to make up the difference..

    Can you over fill the cluth with fluid ? And how much did you know to put in?

      I guess you could! Though the 2 bottles of silicon fluid we filled it with wasn't full.

      While you've got it apart, I would just clean it out and replace the lot.

    Does the factor hubs take a full two tubes from empty?

    What happens if I bore it and engage the fan permanently to the axe? Would this solution destroy the belt?

      No, but it would sound like a jet engine and waste power.

      Unfortunately not, you'll need to use the correct silicon oil.

    If anyone ever sees this comment dont waste your money on genuine toyota viscous hub oil goto your local hobby shop pay $8 for 60ml 👍 instead of the $60 of bucks toyota charges you for 30ml
