I leave my potatoes every year in the raised beds all through autumn and through winter and then I find my potato treasure the next year. It is so exciting to find them a year later!
Thank you, that's probably the best way to store them. I really enjoy harvesting potatoes as well because you never know what you will find. Thanks again.
9:00 I could do with some trousers with kneepads like that 😊. On my plot I use an old cushion wrapped in a compost bag to save my knees. Works well but a bit annoying having to fetch it from the shed all the time.
Hi Ady I forgot about lots of things this year, don't worry about it. i buggered my best garlic and forgot about the leek seeds i was going to save 😂.👌😁👍
Nice harvest 👍 We had the first frost already and I managed to harvest my potatoes, eggplants 🍆 peppers 🌶 and tomatoes 🍅 and pumpkins before it was getting too cold.
Thank you Heidi, the growing season this year seems to have been reduced with the cold weather we have had at the start and at the end, fingers crossed for a long growing season next year.
Oh lord are we supposed to remember everything 😂😂, I’m lucky if I can remember what day it is Ady. You definitely are harvesting loads in mid November 😮. Have a wonderful week hope it’s not snowing 😮, Ali 🌧️🥶🇨🇦
Thank you Nik, they do get so tangled together, I've still got all the small ones so will cook them and save some for salads and the rest I'm going to pickle. It's something I've got to learn more about, using as much as possible with various different cooking options which I know you are really good at. Thanks again.
Check out the 3 sisters planting method. Native Americans grown corn until they're about six inches high, then plant beans around them and squash on the sun facing side. You need to grow corn in small plots, 3-4 rows because of the way they pollinate. What this does is the corn gives the beans structure to grown, the beans pull nitrogen out of the air and down into the soil, and the pumpkins act as ground cover and living mulch. The crops usually grow quicker, bigger and happier.
Thank you Lucy, that's certainly something I could do with the new bed. I not grown sweetcorn or pumpkins for a couple of years and it would be really nice to give them ago again. Thank you again that's been a really helpful comment.
Thank you Allie, I'm looking forward to trying the fermentation of the beetroot and it was after watching your short on making sauerkraut that I started looking into fermentation. Thanks again.
@ my top preserved veg this year is Saurkraut for sure. Definitely doing more of this!! Oooh good timing with all these beets I think I will start a jar of something beet fermented. ☺️
You ended up with fantastic harvests, Ady 🎉 The potatoes can get annoying popping up in random areas 😅 I've left quite a few beets in during early winters and the light frost don't seem to bother them, especially if the frosts are short-lived. Your sprouts look amazing, too I've got nothing this year...😊
Thank you Maiju, the sprouts is camera angles because I have two plants, one is ready to harvest and the other is only half the size so it's either luck or sunshine is the key. I'm expecting volunteer potatoes and on potatoes when will you harvest you main crop? Thanks again.
@adysveggarden I'm harvesting them as needed, 1 bucket at a time. I think there still a bucket of 2nd earlies left to empty. I haven't touched any of the main crops yet. I'll stack them under shelter and use a bucket a fortnight usually 😊💚🌿
planted my spuds in tubs this year- fed up with volunteer potatoes. I always miss them. This year I had a whole row of Charlotte popping up amongst my brassicas, lol! Lt us know what the flavour and cooking quality of Ndine potatoes are please. Cheers! Cook your baby beetroots and pickle- delicious. I store mine in stacked mushroom crates in dampened pet's wood shavings. happy growing 🙂
Thank you, will reply again to this comment when I've tried them. They are two good suggestion with the baby beetroot which I still have got, so will clean them up a try the pickling. I've got some of the pet wood shavings (I use it for browns for the compost if I'm out of everything else) so could give that ago. Thanks again
For Beetroot I know Steve on the Seaside Kitchen channel stores his in wood shavings. I think he dampens the shavings slightly and the wood has antibacterial/anti fungal properties to prevent the beetroot going bad. I was thinking of trying this but it's my first year growing and my harvest wasn't that big. I've pickled a few and wrapped a few in packaging paper and put them in the unheated garage - not sure how well that will work. I've also just cut the tops of a few and left them in the ground. This is something else I learned from Steve's Seaside Kitchen. As long as the temperatures don't get too low I think they should be ok.
Your Brigette Brussels look huge compared to mine. First year growing brussels for me and mine are tiny. I think it's either not enough nutrients in the soil or I started them too late. Probably too late now for them to get any bigger before Christmas. Hopefully next year I can do a better job.
Thank you, I've got pet wood shavings because I use them when I have no brown material for the compost so if I have any beetroot left over I can give that a go. They are big but I have two plants together and the one with less sun the Brussels are only half the size so it appears that sunny positions are need for early Brussels which I did not know until now. Thanks again.
@adysveggarden If you have the wood shavings anyway then that's good because you can still whack them in your compost once all your beetroot has been used up. Was just rechecking the video I mentioned. This is the video from Steve's Seaside Kitchen where he shows how he stores beetroot. The wood shavings bit is from around 5 mins 30 seconds in. He actually gets the wood shavings a lot wetter than I remembered. th-cam.com/video/eTfXz1Sv-kI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IHSIsXjFgqTkDEFA
I'm going to give growing some Greek Gigantes a go next year hopefully. How will you store them? I recall Jessie from the Plot 37 channel saying she has issues with some kind of weevils so she dries hers then freezes them to kill the weevils. No idea how common a problem that is though. Let us know how you found the taste once you've tried them.
Thank you, I had to look up the bean weevil. I'm just going to allow them to dry but now you have said that I may put them in the freezer. Will reply back when I have used them.
Hi Ady, I'm new to your channel after seeing you on Danny's heard it on the Grapevine I love your garden it looks massive and I will be binge watching your videos from the start. One thing I'm curious about is your accent, without telling me your address 😀 what part of the country are you from? I'm picking up what sounds like Liverpool or surrounding areas. I'm originally from Liverpool but moved out 53 years ago but still have a Scouse accent. I like following channels that are in a similar area of the country because of the weather etc, I do follow other channels but make adjustments to how they plant out etc because of the variety of weather in different regions. As for your beetroot you can do lots with them, make chutneys, chocolate and beetroot cake is good, pickle them, great with Scouse, I have even cooked them and frozen them, then when required I throw them in a roasting tin with the Sunday roast. Ohh also you can make Borsh soup, it might encourage you to get out in the garden and do some Cossack dancing to keep you warm now Winter is here 😂
Thank you Liz for your kind introduction, I'm from the surrounding areas but moved about 30 years ago. I'm close to Jane, Roo and Clare. Beetroot is such a versatile vegetable, I'm going to cook the baby ones to pickle so will cook some of the larger ones to freeze as you have suggested because we do like them roasted. I'm not ruling out the dancing (off camera) because it has been bitterly cold today. Thanks again.
mistakes happen easily, ady. i've made more than my fair share and no doubt will make more. lol. i recently lost some onion seedlings from under my grow lights in the bedroom. it took a while but i eventually realised why. every morning i use my electric shaver i finish with a touch of aftershave. i think some hit the plants. just one of many mistakes. lol. oh well, start all over again.......................brian
Thank you Brain, that's brought a smile to my face I don't think I will ever hear that reason again for why the seedlings have died. Thanks again Brian much appreciated.
Have you got any vegetables that you have left and needs harvesting before the frosts?
I leave my potatoes every year in the raised beds all through autumn and through winter and then I find my potato treasure the next year. It is so exciting to find them a year later!

They are handy, I use a cushion pad but like you said it can be a bit annoying to fetch it. Thanks again for your kind comments.
Hi Ady I forgot about lots of things this year, don't worry about it. i buggered my best garlic and forgot about the leek seeds i was going to save 😂.👌😁👍
Thank you Nick, it's nice to know that it's not just me. Thanks again
It’s like finding lost treasure Ady 😂👍
Thank you Mark, it is.
Oh lord are we supposed to remember everything 😂😂, I’m lucky if I can remember what day it is Ady. You definitely are harvesting loads in mid November 😮. Have a wonderful week hope it’s not snowing 😮, Ali 🌧️🥶🇨🇦
Thank you Ali, it really was a bonus harvest especially the potatoes and beetroot. It's certainly getting colder, have a great week Ali.
I can never get them up without the little beetroots coming up so I take them all and then use them in soups and salads
Thank you Nik, they do get so tangled together, I've still got all the small ones so will cook them and save some for salads and the rest I'm going to pickle.

Great harvest 😊
Thank you Tracey
cant go wrong with spuds!, nice video
Thank you, that's much appreciated.
I’ve fleeced my Pak Choi and pulled the rest of our beets for the incoming freeze 🥶 😊
Thank you Allie, I'm looking forward to trying the fermentation of the beetroot and it was after watching your short on making sauerkraut that I started looking into fermentation. Thanks again.

Thank you Sylvi, much appreciated.
Hahaha love this. I forgot about my beetroot too!
Thank you Holly, I hope the beetroot is okay.

Thank you Stella, hopefully the potatoes have made it. Thanks again
Stella, how were your potatoes?
