I am not trying to bash on anyone but, could Bloomberg have sent someone who is less interested in this technology to cover this? This woman shows no joy in the tech inside the car and what it's actually doing. 2:33 "and I've seen that a few times" come on.

She was acting as a reporter trying to get information on features. The demo was done over and over again for the press, and she was being told what anybody who had seen the demo already knew. I didn't get much information, but then again I don't need to see a cheerleader either.

To be fair, she's probably a bit intimidated by Elon's technical knowledge and wanted to show that she's not completely unable to keep up. (That she understands what's going on)

Bloomberg is all about the benjamins. Her job is to figure out whether or not people should invest money in TSLA, which has gone up 524% in the past two years. The only performance they care about is stock performance.
Also, she seemed to enjoy the ride.

I do not know what country you are from, but in the US, the Turbo is only a 30 grand more for a base price comparison. I own many other sport cars and luxury/sport sedans. I can choose to get another luxury sedan over a sports car and still have plenty in my stable. I just want this car since it is quite a leap for electric cars and a move towards self driven cars. Motors have so much more potential than engines. BTW 0-60 in the Turbo is slower than the P85D, only the Turbo S can match it.

All I ever wanted was an automatic car that was promised to me in the 1980's... drop you off to go shopping then parks itself. Call it and it picks you up wherever you are...drives you home from the bar when you're drunk or sleepy. Picks the kids up from school. A 100yrs from now a history teacher will try to explain to his students how early man once manually manipulated cars and portable computing devices. ......And the students will gasp at the thought.

patrick drew Thanks for the info, I am aware of the stats. Real world, however, I believe the results will be surprising. Many are saying Tesla's 0-60 numbers are on the conservative side. Mind you, the P85D has almost 700 hp and torque available from 0 rpm! While the GT-R driver fiddles with launch control and bringing up revs and boost, the Tesla will be gone.

I think her last question is quite valid. Where I live, birds and animals are often walking into the road and dicking around. If I'm being tailgated real closely at 60 mph, I increase the gap to the vehicle in front to give myself plenty of time to brake gradually if need be; to avoid being rear-ended. If I have to emergency stop, then so be it, I have to.
BUT if it's just some stupid squirrel in the road and I make the mental decision that stopping for it (which we're not even supposed to do) would cause more problems than just carrying on, I wouldn't want the car slamming on the anchors and getting me rear-ended just because of a stupid squirrel.

    • @vitalysavicks6756
      @vitalysavicks6756 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

this can easily be implemented as a squirrel filter in the software

    • @JonathanDWagner
      @JonathanDWagner 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

An auto-pilot system would be able to make this decision in a better way then a human ever could because it could actually calculate in real-time things like mass and velocities. It would know that if it slowed down at a certain rate that a rear collision would occur. This is even more important when humans are involved because a lot of human drivers some times tend to lock up or freeze when faced with difficult decisions, this is why anti-locking brakes were created.
Most people who don't believe in automated driving attempt to bring up impossible scenarios that no human could deal with either as a way of invalidating automated systems. The problem is automated systems can do things that humans can't for instance calculating velocities in real-time to avoid getting t-boned by someone running a red light.

Yeah when my 02 Honda Civic ECU went out on the freeway, I almost got rear ended by a Semi truck when I lost power and had to coast to the side of the freeway. Good luck controlling this thing when the same thing happens, some of them want to remove the steering wheels from the cars all together. Some cars with Electric Steering Assist have been known to have issues of Steering Wheel Lock up so you can not turn the wheel even if you lost power. Acura has a car that has the OLD fashioned steering gear backup in case the Electric Steering computer fails you can still steer the car. It is a new Safety Feature they need to advertise more often.

I think the main problem with car autopilot systems is that the the traffic networks are not enclosed systems, which means that at any time, anything unexpected, outside of the normal driving parameters can occur. This is where a human driver makes the difference, between a human which is paying attention to his environment all the time, can observe things that are likely about to happen.
A human can spot other drivers that are driving erratically, they can spot pedestrians on the ground which are not paying attention or are about to jump in front of the car, and so on.
An autopilot can do a better job at actual driving than the human itself, however, the autopilot does not have an instinct, it cannot predict what other traffic participants are going to do, which I think is a major problem with fully implementing autopilots in the near future, at least within the current traffic grid.
A good driver, with good instincts and awareness, will be able to anticipate and avoid potential accidents before they happen, this is something an autopilot will never be able to do.
Practically, the only way we'll be able to fully trust autopilots with driving would be on a traffic grid specifically created for auto-piloted vehicles, think Minority Report. You need two things, you need the roadway to be fully enclosed so that nothing except cars will ever be on the road, and the second condition is for all cars which drive on that roadway to be autopilot driven. So basically in order for a fully automated driving environment to function safely, you need to fully remove the human element from it, no pedestrians, no human drivers.
Obviously meeting these two essential conditions is relatively hard. I guess we can start by building dedicated highways for autopilot only driving. Since highways are already relatively enclosed, it would be easiest just to consolidate a highway's enclosure (make it more restrictive and secure), and then only allow autopilot cars on them.
Then as time passes and transition to EC progresses, at some point all highways will be autopilot only, which will greatly speed up long distance traffic. However, in order for all this traffic to be absorbed you'll also need to have autopilot traffic grids inside cities, otherwise all that traffic from the highways will get choked up in city entrances.
The problem with cities is that they are already built, and they are built bad, it would be impossible to convert current city traffic infrastructure to the conditions required by the autopilot grid. So you can convert the existing infrastructure into parks and pedestrian walkways (eco way, and much more expensive) and then you create a layer of suspended roads above the ground (this will go well with the future urban development since as time passes we build taller and taller buildings, so instead of driving the car to the ground level and then going 200 floors up, you'll drive it at level 100 and then only have to go 100 floors up or down), but this is already very high-tech and very expensive stuff.
A cheaper and much more realistic approach would be to just double up all roads by building another road above them. Then, instead of having two lanes cramped up next to each other, you'll have two one-way dedicated lanes, on top of each other. This will give you the space needed to fully enclose the lanes and since they will be one-way and autopilot only, it will give you that extra traffic flow speed. Obviously doing this would also allow for more pedestrian space around the new stacked one-lane roads, which can be used as green space or wider sidewalks, which will benefit and enable future individual transport technologies like electric bikes, segways, hoverboards or whatever the future brings.
Yes I like my comments nice and big!

The air bag(s) would cushion the impact to living things especially and thus reduce injury.

The problem with Tesla's that have been crashed lately, the owner's assume you can PUNCH IT when you're already doing 60mph on the freeway. This only works from a standing start. If you did this while you are already going 60mph you would hand your ass to your hand and end up in a ditch or worse. Only Formula 1 driver's would be good enough to recover and then you would need something like an Airport Runway to save your ass.

Despite all the pros and cons. Tesla truly brought electric car to a whole new level. From its comfort level and its performances, you could never found it from other electric vehicles. Some might say its overpriced, its not worth for over 100 grands. Its true that you could've so many options of choosing a nice car if you are willing to spend this much money. However, tesla model s is truly worth to buy it. Its so hard to describe how fun it is to drive a model s, especially when you realize this is a electric car. Its acceleration is absolutely incredible from 0 to 60. The car itself is quite heavy compare with others, but you won't able to feel any lags when you step the acceleration pedal. Overall, i think tesla model s is just like a first or second generation of iPhone. It changed the use of our cellphones into a new era. Its not the best yet of course, but you probably can imagine how tesla is going improve, develop and change over the next few years. I mean model s is not the first generation of electric car, yet its the best so far.

My Biggest Fear: A hacker somehow reprograms the car so that when it is on autopilot and the radar is recognizing objects around it, the car accelerates toward the objects and not away from them. Isn't hacking a problem now with these new technologies or am I just stupid?

    • @foobars3816

+C-Lux Of course it is. However you are actually surrounded by a lot of dangerous systems every day which could be hacked to cause you harm. Most of these systems don't have engineers who are a diligent as the ones at Tesla.
But yeah, of course it's a risk.

Sektion9 Even if she didn't - she has a job at Bloomberg, and is the one interviewing Elon. Say what you may about how she got there, she's there. It doesn't really matter that much. Did you see the CNBC debate? Wall Street is a different world.

    The real question is:
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN a regular 60KWh and a P85D?
Most people won't even be able to distinguish this from a Jaguar XF.
All you really need to do is add the spoiler.
I just finished driving the P85D and aside from the need for AWD (for some buyers), the P85 is roughly the same.

I got a feeling the dual motor will solve tesla's problems with the motor breaking down from too much torque. With normal acceleration having only half the load on each motor it should leave to much longer life.
