- From electric cars to spacecraft, tech titan Elon Musk is widely known as an industry disrupter. Tuesday night in Los Angeles, Musk unveiled the very first tunnel in what he hopes will become a network of underground highways. The test tunnel runs between the headquarters of Musk's SpaceX company and a parking lot behind a shuttered business a little over a mile away. "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King takes a ride through the new tunnel and talks to Musk about what inspired him to build it.

Which subway is that? It takes decades to build new track in New York because hundreds fines and regulations make it impossibly expensive. Read The NY Times article “The Most Expensive Mile of Subway on Earth”
This is brilliant! To make it even more accessible, what if we connected multiple pods together? And in order to prevent tire wear, we could use steel wheels on rails instead of rubber tires. And what about power? Lugging around big heavy batteries isn’t very efficient, but because the hyper-pods are traveling on a designated route we could use a separate rail to provide shore power to the pods! And all those car elevators provides a ton of failure points which could break down - what if instead of car elevators, we transported passengers directly underground using high tech motorized stairs? We could consolidate entrance and exit points, reducing maintenance costs and potential failure points. And by just transporting passengers without having to transport cars as well, we could massively increase the efficiency of the system. It’d be like a parkway, but underground. A subterranean parkway! A sub-way for short!

Car dependent areas will always struggle with congestion. The obvious answer is public transit, which is vastly more efficient, safer, and cheaper at moving people.

Clearly you don’t understand economics. A lot of these things just can’t be done because of funding. The people have to pay for it. I believe when traffic becomes such a bigger issue than it is now, people will be ok with tax increases to pay for efficiency. Obviously we aren’t quite there yet.

Like someone in another thread said so well, "Elon is trying to solve HIS traffic problem". For 100 million other Americans on the roads this plan simply isn't feasible. In order to avoid the massive wait times at hyper-tunnel bottlenecks it would require a vast, immediate retrofit to the entire highway system - rural and urban. By Elon's plan there need to be tens of thousands, maybe more, little elevators to take a single car down to 60-80', unload, and come back up. Basically a traffic light that only lets one car through... every 4-5 minutes?? Without even belaboring the obvious from a lift technician's perspective that elevators are inherently flaky, where do you put these things? Just... dig...? Dozens of 60-80 foot holes (for a three story elevator) all through a city? Can you appreciate the sheer scope?? Of that one single part of this plan? Decades in political and environmental impact studies... Tens of billions of dollars. Just to get these cars to the right depth to even START moving anywhere...

@L3nny 666 True and I wish we had better subway systems in place. However cars have several advantages over a traditional subway. First, not every city has subways or even light rail for that matter and even the ones that do the stations can be very spread-out and only reach specific areas. Whereas with this system you could have elevators taking cars down on every other corner and stretching very far. Second, These tunnels are far cheaper to construct and there isn't much money in operating them or overall maintenance cost. Third, it will still help relive traffic in the US due to people loving their cars so much. A lot of people still choose to drive cars over using public transportation for many reasons.

I think his bringing the traffic underground with single cars. My opinion it would be better if he made a Metro with Metro stations around the city it holds more people just like any other major city in the world.

I live near the factory and know a ton of workers at Tesla. Never heard anybody have anything bad to say at all, in fact they all thought they had the best job they could ever get. Don't make this into something it's not, there's a reason so many people like working at tesla and so many want to work there.
The witch hunt comes as a result of what he does, and it's fueled by powerful people. He's directly opposing and competing with trillion dollar industries. The upper echelon of oil and gas would love to see him dead. He's trying to offer a better option at a cheaper price, and that could crumble fortune 500 companies within the next decade. Every time he's sued, or fined, or targeted, I wonder who is behind it.
