    White Pot Underjump at 6:10. Area where Rego Park Station was on the right just west of the Underjump. Remnants of the Rockaway Beach Branch right-of-way on the right.

    I had uncle's working for the LIRR I so wanted to go to work for the line when I graduated high school but my Psychopathic mother dragged me down to Florida back when I was 14 and I lost my opportunity for a great job that I would have worked probably to the day I died. I curse her for that always.

      It's a great career and it's also one of the hardest jobs in New York to get. Took a while for me to get on!

      @@MrMaster767 see that's why you had to have an in. You had to have a relative or a fellow employee vouch for you. I waited three subway trains after school for my buddies train to show up he would let me in the cab and I would practice for my motor man's test. I learned train handling rules regulations everything. People who work for the railroad never retire they work until the day they die. It's not a job it is a profession is who they are they are proud to say they are Railroader. Like being a teacher a policeman or a fireman is something you are 24/7 it is not a 9 to 5:00.

    3:30 What is that continuous flat ribbon to the left of the track? It keeps going along with the track nearly the whole trip, sometimes switching to the other side (e.g. at 8:02). It doesn't seem wired up so my best guess is a place for people to step down during an emergency stop.

    • @paulhollis8879
      @paulhollis8879 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It must be a power rail.

    • @romanrat5613

      It's the third rail

    • @Michael-rw8zv
      @Michael-rw8zv ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it's the third rail, it carries 750 volts DC to the train (the industry standard is 600 V, the lirr is just weird). there's a little metal bit called a shoe that comes out of the train near the wheels that rides on top of the third rail and that's how the connection is made. the last thing you'd wanna do is step on that thing actually, stepping on that would instantly kill you. that's why there's a protective cover on all of the third rail in this video, which would be the flat ribbon you were describing. the actual third rail looks more similar to the rail that the train is on.

    Do LIRR now have wireless? When I was commuting and needed WLAN for my laptop, the only place to get it was the far end of platform 7 at the NYC end. In February that could be a killer.

      @@MrMaster767 Thanks - yup, Wi-Fi, the M9s arrived after I left LI so I haven't had a chance to try them. But if wifi is being rolled our across the network, that's great. Thanks again for the great videos - I never was a fan of M3s but they surely provide a great view from the front.
