Avoid the chemo and use Containers or above the ground bed. If you still want to grow in the ground, the deal with the ants before you plant, that takes a long time.

I'm thinking containers on my deck. Maybe this season.

Has this been a yearly problem for potatoes? In the future I would suggest using Amdro Fire Ant Killer. It is a bait type pesticide that the ants will actively bring down into the nests killing the reproductive queens. Sevin will kill the ants that come into contact with it, but that ends there and nothing is brought down below. They may not be the red imported fire ant (not likely in KS) but Amdro is successful with various ants, including harvester ants.

I only tried growing them once because the ants killed them all. I grew okra last year and had ants also. I used Ortho bait stations and they worked really well. They are small brown or black ants. Thanks for the tip.

I just poisoned fireants in my potatoes. We'll see.

I hope it works out for you. I gave up on growing potatoes at least in my beds. Maybe I will try buckets on my deck?
