Love your vids. Found them last week and subscribed. I learn at least a little something from all of them. However, my husband is singularly appalled at your rhubarb plants (he loathes rhubarb with a passion). LOL Do you have a video on how you built your compost bins? Hubs is interested in those. Like I said in a previous post, our weather is so dry in summer, we can't have your standard pallet/chicken wire bins.
Thank you for these videos. I’m getting started on a garden and need all the good info I can get. I’m in Ohio in the U.S.and we are still having frost. Are you having frost there? Is it okay to put potatoes out even when it’s frosting?
This is my first year in buckets and, so far, great success. I followed your feed tips and I am probably 4 - 6 weeks ahead of my neighbours on my first earlies, which I started in the greenhouse and are due to harvest on 1st May. I will never grow spuds in the ground again. Thank you!
Here in Japan, we use the husk of the rice that is left after harvest. It makes an excellent mulch. We also use the inner skin that is removed when the rice is polished in a rice polishing machine. These machines are set up like a self-service kiosk. You buy your bag of whole-grain rice, pop along to the kiosk, pour the rice into the hopper, set up your bag at the other end, put in your 100 Yen coin and the rice comes out polished to your specifications. I just realised that I still have some of that dusty stuff so I will mulch my potatoes tomorrow. Cheers Tony.

Tony I used shredded paper as a mulch in my Pepper bed one year. Most productive peppers I ever grew. I think the reflected sunlight on underside of the leaves supercharged the photosynthesis process.
I personally use seaweed I gather on the beach as a mulch for potatoes. Holds tons of water whilst feeding the potatoes micronutrients at the same time and the bonus is slugs absolutely hate seaweed 😂

Fantastic video Tony totally agree on being able to control the growing environment. I like to soak the buckets in my wheelbarrow full of water whenever they feel like they're starting to dry
Your videos have encouraged me to try again. I planted a small plot directly in the ground two years ago and watched daily as the voles moved in and ate all but one. (I found it when it popped up out of the weeds.) Was waiting to see what I got at the end of the summer when I saw that the voles found that one too. :( This year I will be planting above ground and will be buying containers a bit at a time for next season. Love that I can use my shredded paper as mulch and will be checking with my neighbor to see If I can get several barrows full of his wood chips too! Thank you!
I've had decent success collecting creek sediment and forest floor mulch as soil boosting components. Both resources are within 100 meters of my garden, it is still labor intensive. It is worth it though.
Tony for the last few years i have grown my spuds in containers with great results, the compost i use is home made ,its a great feeling when my grand children help me to harvest the spuds come June [ early ] and Sep for the main crop. Keep up the good work Frank
Again, thanks for another interesting video, I thought you had taught us all we need to know but here you are with more ideas. I have never noticed you mulch potatoes before and I like the idea of the netting to hold the tops as you have described. Well done.
Thanks Judith. I havent had to before due to living in wales, However, Over the past year or so I have had to look at alternatives as more and more people from around the world have come to me with their challenges. How can I reccomend something to someone else I have not tried myself. I run all sorts of experiments that you may not see in the background. When you see the video I have usually tested something for a year or so to ensure its viable. I dont want to give info that is run of the mill. I want you guys to succeed in growing not fail because I wanted to make a video
Great video Tony. I mulch everything I grow in tubs, not just spuds. All my blueberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, patio fruit trees, mints, flowers etc are in tubs. What I’ve done this spring is buy some large saucer pots to stand some in to bottom water rather than from the top to see if it helps.
@@simplifygardening just filled 4 plastic containers and planted 4 Charlotte potatoes in each as you described. Will need to water frequently though as I live on the French riviera!
I will be start growing my Container potato on the end of this month, until then I hope the weather will be warm enough durning the evening. Thank you Tony, each time you applod a video I learn something new.

I am new subscriber , just love how you deliver the information. I’m growing potatoes this year in black fabric bags which I anticipate will need more water then the plastic buckets. . The bags are 20 gallon. I purchased them several years ago. I will mulch the tops. I am in Massachusetts , USA. Hot summers. Thank you 😃😃
Hey welcome to the channel. Yes they will require a lot more water because they are double the size, but will also evaporate moisture through the sides too. The finger test is still valid though stick in to your knuckle and if moist it has enough when dry water it completely
I never thought of wood chips under the potatoes, i will do that. I do use grass mulch on top to hold in water. But there is another use it protects the potatoes from the sun from turning green.
Hi Tony I am cofused. New gardener. 3 years dabbling. But this year it's become more relevant to learn faster. I tried 1st year growing spuds in ground. Better results than expected. 2nd year tried growing in pots very disappointed with yield. Would like to try pots again this year. Is this why I did not get many spuds and thanks for your videos. Great learning tool. I don't have allotment, so don't meet any growers. I grow in my garden. So your knowledge is appreciated. Thanks
Hi Kenneth. The only reason you would hoe up or earth up potatoes is to keep the light off them, They are more than capable of pushing through the soil. You risk damaging the haulms if you earth up in buckets. so fill them at time of planting. I did a very detailed video on how to get the best results a few weeks ago. did you see it? th-cam.com/video/hgJa2wrX6lA/w-d-xo.html
Great video Tony. As I have some potatoes left I will give it one more try this year. I used to put them in the ground leaving them there for good. That was a mistake. I will get more compost and water them the way you recommend it. Fingers crossed that there will be a good harvest in autumn. Greetings from Bavaria, Germany
Thanks tony for your response. I have 33 separate gardens and as of yesterday have 888 veg berries flower seedlings started in various stages , taken from over 100 seed pkgs . love it mate! just started planting potatoes in the garden with the kids they absolutely love it, was trying to get some big ones to make it worth there while
Another great video,Tony. Because of being unable to get much compost this year I have used a mixture of my sieved garden soil and my own home made compost to fill my 30 litre tubs and topped off the top couple of inches with multi purpose compost to keep down the weeds that will inevitably be in the mixture.
Sounds great! Mike. I am running an experiment this year thats what a load of the containers in a circle is for I will release that at harvest time when I have the results too
My grandmother taught us to dig a deep hole and bury our food scraps. We would place used paper towels or cut up cardboard to cover the food scraps and water the hole really well. Wait a month or two and plant in that area. This technique works wonders for those waterlogged wood stacks that's been sitting in our yard for years.
Thanks for the sub Welcome to the channel and you should do it. Its nerve wracking at first. I used to shake when i made my first videos and look at me now lol. Remember you have full control the only person who will ever see it is you if you mess up. but take a look at my first videos, everyone is rubbish when they start and then they grow with practise. DO IT, and DO IT NOW! give it a few weeks and you will love it
Hey! I followed ur advice and made my first video 😂 the potato in the video is just a prop though because mum said not to actually dig in the garden haha please rate me in my comments. Your my inspiration.
Really liked the cattle panel idea! My potato stems always flopped over, snapped and or broke off. Sticks and twine wasn't really doing the job either. TY
Thank you for the potato tips, I have just started to garden. I am growing potatoes, I like salad potatoes. I am presently growing salad blue, violetta, baby potatoes, purple potatoes, Apache potatoes, in potato bags, shopping bags and I was covering them over with soil. Next time, I'm waiting for these ones to harvest, they have a lot of greens at the moment, one of the purple ones, I can see a flower bud, I shall take it out. I went definitely get those buckets to plant my next crop of potatoes.
Thank you so much for that video you answered everything I was looking for how I can improve growing my potatoes in a container in a small backyard of my beautiful garden I create for so many years thank you again ewa
I grow my potatoes in pots and bags always have a good supply for family and a neighbour, that’s last till around February, I’ve only a small back yard but the potatoes and peppers always do well, I only have the sun in the garden from 11 am as it’s in a south facing house surrounded by other houses on south and west and flats on the east side,my yard is mainly shaded, yet the spot where the spuds are and pepper s the sunniest lasts till sun moves to the northwest.
I really appreciate your videos. You go thru the whole process from seed to storing. I love both potatoes and sweet potatoes. I am a beginner at this and I''m scared to spend all this time and money only to epically fail. I am one of those people that have a "brown" thumb. I've even killed and air fern. Again, thanks for all of your shared knowledge thru you-tube.
Thanks Tony, last year i did beds and containers, this year only containers as allotment is closed( totally in agreement it closed) so containers grown at hime, ive put the containers in tyres( tyres painted) keeps my dogs away and paint to reduce the heat from black tyre that would absorb heat. Great results last year. As always a great video, thanks Tony.
@@simplifygardening no not at all. I have them in buckets and big pots. Wouldnt in the tyres as chemicals too dodgy Tony , i know you well know this and thats why you asked
As I keep telling hubby containers all the way so much easier 👍I do containers ,he does ground but it’s so much harder getting them up ,disappointing when you put a fork through a great potato 🙈I’m getting bigger more tubs for next year too ,great tips Tony thank you
Great idea Julie, but dont get bigger than the 30l ones they crop doesnt grow as well in larger containers, I think its because of the soil that has to remain warm
So glad that I found your channel. Congrats on achieving 100k, that's awesome! I always grow my potatoes in containers and have had success. I'm in Zone 5, Chicago. You've given me some great tips, thanks!
When you mentioned grass cuttings as mulch, I tried it in it's own but I become a hard lump, the gardener in our estate gardens told me to mix the grass cuttings with plant cuttings , this stops the grass cuttings to become a thick mess. The other things I have seen and know that it works. I look at them from my 4th floor balcony. In every part of gardens there is a wood box about 1metre square. The top is left uncovered. I see when they cut the grass they put the cuttings in those boxes, this breaks down very fast and I see them put the broken down grass cuttings around the plants. It is a good fertilizer. May not be the best nutrition for all plants but a good idea. Try It, the grass cutting break down very fast
Thanks for that video Tony . have just started growing my pototoes in tubs this year, as you can never them all out of the beds and they keep popping up every where.
soil stingers. they make then for military look up stinger but make one that is small solar panel and button then put indoor during winter on light bulb to cause heat at stinger for root growth and therefore cold season plant growth or accelerated growth.
Thanks for the info mate. I didn't know about the difference between Indeterminate and Determinate and the growing on one level for Indeterminate. Should double my first/second early crop. Also love the watering advice. Cheers
Question. I live in Oregon. Especially in Coos Bay, chips are abundant!!!! But, the Douglas Fur smell really wonderful, but bad for potato’s because of the acidity. What chips would you recommend. Thank you. Love your channel!!!!
Brilliant videos - you have got me totally into spud growing. I bought my 30 litre containers and am well on my way with 2nd earlies and maincrops. Can’t wait for harvest!!
I am wondering about putting bales of hay beside the pots to stop the hot Australian sun from overheating the exposed black plastic. Loving your videos thanks
Just subscribed yer knowledge is great... I've got my spuds ready to go in on Monday but think I'll use buckets next year I'm a newbie to allotment life so its trial n error
Hi, Your videos are the best I’ve heard. Im so glad I found you. We rent a duplex with NO YARD, so the only place I could grow potatoes is on my driveway. Could I build a “frame” that would hold about 6” of wood chips then put my containers on top of it? The frame would keep the chips from spreading everywhere.
Hey Genita. Welcome to the channel. You could do that, or if you do not have an issue with watering more often you could just sit the containers right on the drive. but the woodchips do help with watering and keeping the containers cooler. I am glad your enjoying the videos :)
I use barrier netting to surround the buckets but the wire would be better. It would also help if manufacturers made the containers / pots white to reflect the suns heat & prevent water evaporation. Same with compost bins. Not sure why they dont?
Folks I hope you got value from this video. now you just need to know how to keep them after you grow them. The next one you should watch is Effective POTATO Growing Tips for Astounding Results th-cam.com/video/hgJa2wrX6lA/w-d-xo.html

Apart from my garden i started on an allotment earlier this year. They provide free compost; cow manure and horse manure year round. Great

Remember you have full control the only person who will ever see it is you if you mess up. but take a look at my first videos, everyone is rubbish when they start and then they grow with practise. DO IT, and DO IT NOW! give it a few weeks and you will love it
@@simplifygardening thanks, I'll try lol
TY
Yeah we have all been there Kathleen im hoping this way will help
Thank you for the potato tips, I have just started to garden. I am growing potatoes, I like salad potatoes. I am presently growing salad blue, violetta, baby potatoes, purple potatoes, Apache potatoes, in potato bags, shopping bags and I was covering them over with soil. Next time, I'm waiting for these ones to harvest, they have a lot of greens at the moment, one of the purple ones, I can see a flower bud, I shall take it out. I went definitely get those buckets to plant my next crop of potatoes.
The buckets work very well Valerie. Great your growing agsin
@@simplifygardening Thank you.
I teach container gardening to young kids and with covid 19 its important for them to control a garden now and helps to calms their fears of covid 19.
Yes Gardening has so many benefits it is why I work with kids trying to get them into gardening also
I wish I started when I was young , thank you both for teaching our young
@@takilove3566 you're welcome. Please grow a garden this year if you can.
Your videos are so instructional and I like your step by step guide for me as I am new to growing potatoes! Thank you
I am glad it is of interest to you
Fantastic! Been wondering if im watering too much or not enough. Thanks Tony! Jen
Glad this has helped you Jen. Remember your finger is the key
Thank you so much for that video you answered everything I was looking for how I can improve growing my potatoes in a container in a small backyard of my beautiful garden I create for so many years thank you again ewa
Glad it was helpful!
That is awesome!
Your videos are always good thanks Tony
Thank you very much Lizzie
Thanks from North Carolina, USA!
Thanks for watching! welcome to the channel
Thanks glad you are enjoying them
Outstanding video, I planted in ground, but I am thinking of containers now for next year. Thank You.
Thats great im sure we will all have great crops
Going to try a couple of containers for the first time, this year
let me know how you get on martin
how did you get on ?
Dry Bracken is what I use as a mulch. Rake it up before March, lovely stuff
Also a good compost ingredient
Wow, I just discovered your channel today. Thank you for this information! Subscribed.
Really enjoyed this vlogg. Great tips. New Garden TH-camr from Ireland.
Thanks and welcome to the channel Mr Tidy Garden
Yet another great video. Cheers Tony!
Thanks 😉👍
Thank you !
Get to enjoy and learn.
Badly needed info
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thats great. Your not growing in the tires though are you? Im in the middle of fliming a video on that after my blog post was very busy
Awesome! Thank you! i am glad you found my channel too. Welcome lots more coming up :)
The watering of dried compost must be done very slowly the first 2-3 times it's done. After that it hydrates as regular dirt does.
I am going to try the containers method because it is much easer
It is very easy
Just placed my order for 5 30ltr tubs 👍🏽 look forward to getting some first ‘early potatoes’ in and on the go... cheers for the advice Tony
Hope you enjoy it!
In every part of
gardens there is a wood box about 1metre square.
Hi Farakh If your watering regular than it shouldnt matt too much but a great tip to add to courser materials
Thanks for that video Tony . have just started growing my pototoes in tubs this year, as you can never them all out of the beds and they keep popping up every where.
Yes im having a similar isdue in the new fruit garden as there were some left from the old tenant
soil stingers. they make then for military look up stinger but make one that is small solar panel and button then put indoor during winter on light bulb to cause heat at stinger for root growth and therefore cold season plant growth or accelerated growth.
Hi Tony. Do you think I could use strimmed nettle leaves as a general mulch please?
That would be excellent :) nettles are very high in nitrogen and lots of other nutrients :)
Thanks for the info mate. I didn't know about the difference between Indeterminate and Determinate and the growing on one level for Indeterminate. Should double my first/second early crop. Also love the watering advice. Cheers
Sure thing!
Good luck! keep me informed
Hi, where did you buy 30 l containers?
Great tips. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thanks !
Congratulations Tony! 100K subscribers have now turned into 123K subscribers.
Thanks a million! Its growing very fast. I will be sorting out a live stream soon and will be drawing the giveaway for it
I am wondering about putting bales of hay beside the pots to stop the hot Australian sun from overheating the exposed black plastic. Loving your videos thanks
Yes bruce that would insulate them. but they would be fine if you mulch and keep the foiliage up. i grew them when I was in Mackay
Just subscribed yer knowledge is great... I've got my spuds ready to go in on Monday but think I'll use buckets next year I'm a newbie to allotment life so its trial n error
Welcome to the channel Richie there’s 10 years of videos here to catch up on you will be a pro in no time
Exelent tips and great advice with the cattle wire thanks for sharing tony
Glad to help im sure this will work perfect
Can I use pine needles as a mulch? THANKS
Thanks. I'm definitely going to use this method this year
Great! Let me know how you go with it Kenneth
cool got my kit now for 3 tubs great info again.
Great to hear!
Thank you for this video!
Your welcome Shonna
Hi, Your videos are the best I’ve heard. Im so glad I found you. We rent a duplex with NO YARD, so the only place I could grow potatoes is on my driveway. Could I build a “frame” that would hold about 6” of wood chips then put my containers on top of it? The frame would keep the chips from spreading everywhere.
Hey Genita. Welcome to the channel. You could do that, or if you do not have an issue with watering more often you could just sit the containers right on the drive. but the woodchips do help with watering and keeping the containers cooler. I am glad your enjoying the videos :)
Awesome site!
Thank you. im glad your enjoying it. Welcome to the channel
Simplify Gardening I subscribed weeks ago. Been gardening for 40 years and you still provide value to even the experienced
Mate great tips. I'm doing all of this this season. Thanks
Glad to help
I use barrier netting to surround the buckets but the wire would be better. It would also help if manufacturers made the containers / pots white to reflect the suns heat & prevent water evaporation. Same with compost bins. Not sure why they dont?
In some areas the black colour would help in others not so much, but consider some white paint or wrap them in horticultural plastic
