I would love to see the 4524 under steam again -and I hope I live to see that day. If I were given the option whether to travel by plane, train or automobile I would definitely choose train.

My parents worked for Frisco in St. Louis, Mom was 3rd generation in her family, her grandpa laid track for them, her dad and 4 uncles were conductors, she worked at Gen Office, met Dad at company picnic. He worked at freight house and later Lindenwood Yards office. I hope to get down here someday to see this engine. Great video.
It is amazing, in 2023 to see old film of a day in my life in 1953. I was 5 years old and my family lived just 2 houses south of Calhoun on N. Broadway. My uncle Forrest worked for the Frisco and arranged for me to ride this engine with him on Calhoun across Broadway on its way to Grant Beach. I remember it to this day. I am now 75. It was a slow ride - maybe 50 ft or so but probably less. I lived in Springfield for the next 18 years,until 1971 ,and frequently seeing the engine in those years brought the memory back to me each time. Right now this brings back another memory of that place and time. I had seen television for the first time earlier that year in a house on that very corner. We didn’t own a TV then, but our next-door neighbor did. We were invited to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the Second. Quite a year for me.

As a scrapping enthusiast, I would enjoy watching a video of breaking this up for scrap. It could be done in the form of an educational video showing the benefits of recycling steel and copper.
SteamLocoScrapper Not gonna happen. The PR value of these things outweighs the pollution factor(and with the amount of locomotives left in running order, it's not that big of a problem anyway). These things are historic, and as long as there is public support, these locomotives arent going anywhere.
@@Sparecards My opinion has no value as scrap. There's plenty of steel and copper in a steam loco. As well as brass fittings in the cab and phosphor bronze in the bearings. The loco can be sliced apart with cutting torches, broken into small pieces and the metals separated ready for melting and recycling. There could be $30k or $50k scrap or more in a big loco. Well worth cutting and melting.
I say thanks to the people of Springfield, MO for saving and restoring a piece of American railroading history. I would have been there to see the progress of placing 4524 into the park each and every day if I were there in Springfield at that time. I know that this video is old, but the people there still care. Thanks again.

Nice. We have one of Frisco's old locomotives on static display here in Pensacola. Its #1355. It originally was a 2-8-0 Consolidation #1318 but was rebuilt into a 2-8-2 Mikado. For a while it went into shambles, even one of the steam piston boxes rusted completely through. It since has gone through major repairs and is extensively cared for now. Surprisingly, it still has all of its original equipment still aboard and could be restored to working condition.
Cirux321. This was how they brought the one into Municipal Park in west Mobile. Shorter temporary spur off the main but two pieces of prefab track being lifted and carried around to the front. Love seeing the one in Pensacola when I drive through downtown.
The group that maintains 4500 in Tulsa has expressed interest in restoring the locomotive when the time is right. It’s entirely possible that a 4500 could ride the rails again.
My cousin and I rode the rails back in 65, went all over the country. Yes, we hoboed it, thought it would be fun, it was. It had it`s good times and bad times. Still it was an adventure and we were 14 and 15 years old. When we got back Grandmother gave us a what-for. I think about it now days and think maybe one more, catch out to where and why? Those were the days my friends.

Thanks for sharing this. If I ever get to do another Route 66 trip I will spend some time at this museum. I lived in the Ozarks for a few years in my early childhood and the Frisco was my first favorite railroad. I wish someone other than BN could have bought them.
As with any video on an engine in a park I'm seeing "restore her! Get it running!" Any of you got a spare couple of million to make that happen? Where would it run? Be kept? What would it pull? Be glad this engine has a roof over its head and that it even still exists. Not to mention a group taking care of it.

The Frisco 4500s may not have been the most powerful Northerns ever built, but they're second only to the Cotton Belt L1s in terms of appearance! Gorgeous design!
The international & great northern/frisco is what built the Gulf Coast Lines in Texas- Louisiana. I model the Guadalupe river valley branches, and a interchange branch with the Sp (great Houston & San Antonio originally) largest steam I can realistically run is 2-8-2’s. But my branch lines are mainly ran by 4-4-0’s all the way into the early 1940’s. Wish there would’ve been GCL steam locos saved.
That sounds like a great layout! I’ve always been intrigued by layouts from that era. I recently had the chance to run a Katy steamer on a friends 1950s layout. That was a cool trip back in time from the Katy stuff I’m used to operating on my layout!

The firebox on the 4-8-4 was by far the biggest on any of the Frisco locomotives, and in many ways that determines the power available. They didn't have any articulated locomotives so far as I know.
My grandfather was nearly killed by a engine similar to this. It happened back in the late 1920's and grandpa had to drive home in near blizzard conditions,in those days there wasn't any railroad gates and blinking warning lights,just a wooden cross buck,grandpa had to cross these tracks in blinding snow in his V-12 powered Cadillac Fleetwood series 75.(grandpa was a private practicing doctor) He couldn't see or hear if a train was coming or not,so grandpa put the car into first gear,released the clutch and got half way across the tracks🛤,when the engine similar to this one hit him broad side,it completely destroyed the Fleetwood series 75,but by the miracle of GOD,he only got a broken ankle out of the accident. What's odd about this,is that grandpa was a podiatrist and this was his only injury. Grandpa said that a big car is the BEST insurance policy a man can own🚘💥🚂.

Yes, it would be pretty difficult to get her back to the active rail line and running again. It’s only a few blocks north of where she sits in the park, but it would be a very challenging and expensive endeavor to get it out and restored. Maybe I’ll add that to my wish list for the day I strike it rich. Ha.
You know, I dont wanna be that guy, but I think every railway claims their 4-8-4 Helped turn the tide in thr war. In a way they all sort of did I guess.
So since it's clearly possible to power one of these old locomotives with compressed air...Why not reuse older locos in this manner? Convert the tenders carry a couple compressors and diesel fuel. That would increase the service range and the speed at which goods could be delivered by eliminating the need to constantly stop for water. If they can use carbon fiber to reinforce compressed air cylinders to hold 4500 psi...there should be no problem achieving the 200 - 300 psi these steam locos operated on.
Hi, Owen! Yes, the engines at Silver Dollar City are still painted for the Frisco. In fact, they just acquired and rebuilt another engine, and will soon put it in Frisco colors.
by a country mile yes. locomotive size isn't judged just by driver number alone but by boiler, firebox size, psi, and drawbar horsepower. 1630 is actually fairly small. long story short, yes. you're quite wrong
She has more wheels, and probably has more raw pulling power on a straight and level track, but Northerns(especially war babies) were generally much bigger than decapods, and therefore much faster and tougher due to the boiler.
everybody has very good points here! I'd say you're all right just like me! however, I wonder, since her cylinder rebuild, how much power old 1630 has gained since the steam team says that she is more powerful. I mean she has pulled 135 empty coal cars (a record for any non articulated steam locomotive), so it seems that she is making up for her driver size in pulling power. I highly doubt she's more powerful than a northern, but her power may have exceeded, almost matched, or matched that of maybe some of the more powerful (but still less powerful than a northern) locomotives of the SLSF.
What they should've done to avoid steam locomotives from retiring, they would've added a huge air-compressing tank inside the tender, after emptying the coal or oil, to inject compressed air into the boiler in order to power the pistons to make them operate under their own power of hauling trains again without burning their fires. Just like in the video when they used a portable air compressor to power the engine's movement to reach it's display home in Springfield, Missouri.

Depends on what the state of the inside is, based off what they said, it would be quite the undertaking, and might not even be doable, the exposure to the elements and vandalism probably took a toll on the boiler, not to mention running her with air pressure for ten days probably didn't do much good for her insides. I would say no, but there are other Frisco Northerns(4500, 4501, 4516) out there that may be in better shape internally, my guess would be 4500 or 4516 based off pictures, but I wouldn't begin to know how this works.
The Arctic Gamer My question is how would compressed air damage the boulder no heat stressing, no water corrosion steam and compressed air are almost the same thing just one makes pressure by being boiled the other makes pressure by using a compressor.

Hello! This engine is part of a museum now. It is pretty unlikely it will be restored. There are no plans for that, but who knows what could happen in the future?
Hello! Yes, Illinois Railway Museum owns and operates #1630. There was another operating Frisco engine, #1522, which ran on mainline excursions between 1988 and 2002, but it's back on static display at the National Museum of Transport outside St. Louis.
Mike Pericolosi Sadly no. Some steam locomotives are way more powerful than diesel locomotives but steam engines would cost way more than diesels. And that's mostly why they originally got rid of them
They should at least start rebuilding some steam engines or use the ones that are already in excursion service and test what they are good for. If this were to happen, I am pretty damn sure they will use some steam engine in frieght and passenger service. Hell I think even Amtrak would use a rebuild on passenger service if all this were to happen.
You will notice that the railroads who used Northerns and Mountains had to deal with steeper grades than those who didn't. For example, the MKT or Katy Railroad never had any locos larger than a Mikado, 2-8-2. While the Frisco had steeper grades running through the Ozarks, the MKT skirted the Ozarks to the north and west and went through flatter terrain. The MKT also used Pacifics, 4-6-2, for their passenger trains, not Northerns, 4-8-4. It seems most of the railroads running to Dallas, Texas, used larger locos than the MKT...

There's a reason why steam locomotives are not used anymore. They're just not practical in the modern freight market. They're very expensive and labor intensive machines that require a lot of infrastructure to keep them maintained. I love old steam trains as much as the next guy, but if I ran a railroad, I would never choose to use steam power to try and make a profit.

That's a short line that doesn't use them for regular revenue freight. At the end of the day, running a business is about turning a profit and growing. And to be competitive, you have to offer prices that are as low as possible, which means you have to make costs as low as possible. Steam locomotives will never be able to compete with diesel-electric and electric. They are much cheaper. And lets be honest, everybody's greedy. I'm greedy, you're greedy, and I don't give a shit if they're greedy. As long as they are competing, the customer comes out the winner. Like I said, I'd never buy a fleet of steam locomotives for regular service. I might do so in the name of preservation and heritage, like the UP, but nothing else.
Hi, Sam. I believe they acquired the caboose years after the Frisco-BN merger when all the cabooses had been repainted green. Springfield has s lot of railroaders who got their start under BN. They actually work to keep it in decent cosmetic shape. The biggest threat to this locomotive is actually the neighborhood (not a place you want to be after dark).

St Joseph, Mo has a CB&Q 4-8-4 Northern in a city park, but as far as I know, it isn't in nice restored condition like this one is.

The firebox on the 4-8-4 was by far the biggest on any of the Frisco locomotives, and in many ways that determines the power available. They didn't have any articulated locomotives so far as I know.
My grandfather was nearly killed by a engine similar to this.
It happened back in the late 1920's and grandpa had to drive home in near blizzard conditions,in those days there wasn't any railroad gates and blinking warning lights,just a wooden cross buck,grandpa had to cross these tracks in blinding snow in his V-12 powered Cadillac Fleetwood series 75.(grandpa was a private practicing doctor)
He couldn't see or hear if a train was coming or not,so grandpa put the car into first gear,released the clutch and got half way across the tracks🛤,when the engine similar to this one hit him broad side,it completely destroyed the Fleetwood series 75,but by the miracle of GOD,he only got a broken ankle out of the accident.
What's odd about this,is that grandpa was a podiatrist and this was his only injury.

Yes, it would be pretty difficult to get her back to the active rail line and running again. It’s only a few blocks north of where she sits in the park, but it would be a very challenging and expensive endeavor to get it out and restored. Maybe I’ll add that to my wish list for the day I strike it rich. Ha.

So since it's clearly possible to power one of these old locomotives with compressed air...Why not reuse older locos in this manner? Convert the tenders carry a couple compressors and diesel fuel. That would increase the service range and the speed at which goods could be delivered by eliminating the need to constantly stop for water. If they can use carbon fiber to reinforce compressed air cylinders to hold 4500 psi...there should be no problem achieving the 200 - 300 psi these steam locos operated on.
Compressors would have to be massive and you’d run into extreme premature cylinder wear due to lack of lubrication.

Likely not. The weather in Springfield isn't conducive to storing steam locomotives.
The "City" wanted to scrap it, just typical of their breed and they are the same everywhere, overpaid and underworked.

Sure it would just take millions of dollars.

Smaller boiler, and smaller drivers. Less weight and smaller tender
by a country mile yes. locomotive size isn't judged just by driver number alone but by boiler, firebox size, psi, and drawbar horsepower. 1630 is actually fairly small.

Yep, I thought the same once, but the size of the boiler and power and size of the wheels made her bigger and stronger than a decapod.
She has more wheels, and probably has more raw pulling power on a straight and level track, but Northerns(especially war babies) were generally much bigger than decapods, and therefore much faster and tougher due to the boiler.
everybody has very good points here! I'd say you're all right just like me! however, I wonder, since her cylinder rebuild, how much power old 1630 has gained since the steam team says that she is more powerful. I mean she has pulled 135 empty coal cars (a record for any non articulated steam locomotive), so it seems that she is making up for her driver size in pulling power. I highly doubt she's more powerful than a northern, but her power may have exceeded, almost matched, or matched that of maybe some of the more powerful (but still less powerful than a northern) locomotives of the SLSF.
What they should've done to avoid steam locomotives from retiring, they would've added a huge air-compressing tank inside the tender, after emptying the coal or oil, to inject compressed air into the boiler in order to power the pistons to make them operate under their own power of hauling trains again without burning their fires. Just like in the video when they used a portable air compressor to power the engine's movement to reach it's display home in Springfield, Missouri.
That only works at low speeds and for extremely short distances.

Depends on what the state of the inside is, based off what they said, it would be quite the undertaking, and might not even be doable, the exposure to the elements and vandalism probably took a toll on the boiler, not to mention running her with air pressure for ten days probably didn't do much good for her insides.
I would say no, but there are other Frisco Northerns(4500, 4501, 4516) out there that may be in better shape internally, my guess would be 4500 or 4516 based off pictures, but I wouldn't begin to know how this works.

Probably not, but 4500 and 4501 might be in good enough shape for restoration in the future.

Hello! This engine is part of a museum now. It is pretty unlikely it will be restored. There are no plans for that, but who knows what could happen in the future?

Hello! Yes, Illinois Railway Museum owns and operates #1630. There was another operating Frisco engine, #1522, which ran on mainline excursions between 1988 and 2002, but it's back on static display at the National Museum of Transport outside St. Louis.

Mike Pericolosi Sadly no. Some steam locomotives are way more powerful than diesel locomotives but steam engines would cost way more than diesels. And that's mostly why they originally got rid of them
They should at least start rebuilding some steam engines or use the ones that are already in excursion service and test what they are good for. If this were to happen, I am pretty damn sure they will use some steam engine in frieght and passenger service. Hell I think even Amtrak would use a rebuild on passenger service if all this were to happen.

You will notice that the railroads who used Northerns and Mountains had to deal with steeper grades than those who didn't. For example, the MKT or Katy Railroad never had any locos larger than a Mikado, 2-8-2. While the Frisco had steeper grades running through the Ozarks, the MKT skirted the Ozarks to the north and west and went through flatter terrain. The MKT also used Pacifics, 4-6-2, for their passenger trains, not Northerns, 4-8-4. It seems most of the railroads running to Dallas, Texas, used larger locos than the MKT...

There's a reason why steam locomotives are not used anymore. They're just not practical in the modern freight market. They're very expensive and labor intensive machines that require a lot of infrastructure to keep them maintained. I love old steam trains as much as the next guy, but if I ran a railroad, I would never choose to use steam power to try and make a profit.

That's a short line that doesn't use them for regular revenue freight. At the end of the day, running a business is about turning a profit and growing. And to be competitive, you have to offer prices that are as low as possible, which means you have to make costs as low as possible. Steam locomotives will never be able to compete with diesel-electric and electric. They are much cheaper. And lets be honest, everybody's greedy. I'm greedy, you're greedy, and I don't give a shit if they're greedy. As long as they are competing, the customer comes out the winner. Like I said, I'd never buy a fleet of steam locomotives for regular service. I might do so in the name of preservation and heritage, like the UP, but nothing else.

Hi, Sam. I believe they acquired the caboose years after the Frisco-BN merger when all the cabooses had been repainted green. Springfield has s lot of railroaders who got their start under BN. They actually work to keep it in decent cosmetic shape. The biggest threat to this locomotive is actually the neighborhood (not a place you want to be after dark).
