Today I bought Golden Stage! Another danmei novel with a very romantic couple! I can't wait to sink my teeth into Fu Shen and Yan Xiaohan's relationship. Stitch has already read it and loves the main pair, Yanfu, and from the small exerpt we read it already sounds funny and super well written as well! I hope you enjoy! :)

I actually loves hearing about the history of the gay marriage in the book and uses for it. Using it as an excuse to cut off bloodlines was actually so smart! It also gives a reason for the arranged marriage. I have not read the book but I might have to...

I just read a post earlier that said the “wife” title in ancient China goes to the same sex character who has less status. That it’s more of a political placement than a top or bottom thing. I wish I could post screenshots because I took one less than 10 minutes ago talking about this lol. Often the wife title and the bottom possition go together but this novel just happens to not be that was. So Yan Xiaohan really would be considered the wife. Even though that might not be the way it looks based on height and presence. I think that’s really interesting. It’s a seperate thing entirely from gong/shou.

I really appreciate Stitch's gay rainbow halo throughout part of this video.
Fu Shen is so brutally straight-forward though leaving Yan Xiaohan to wonder how his mouth hasn't gotten him killed yet. But FS is still quite naive, seeing most things in black-white having grown up on the battlefield. His loyalty is to the country, no matter how imperfect it is.
Meanwhile, half the things Yan Xiaohan says have double-meanings to them, and if you make the mistake of taking them at face value...dead. He sees the world in shades of grey; for better or for worse. His loyalty is to the Emperor, no matter how crazy he is.
Im buying more and more series with plots I can't explain to any of my friends or family.

My comment isn’t letting me edit it so I’m replying to myself. In case no one has done more research on it, I did a little which may or may not be accurate. I’m sure it would be easier if I could read Chinese
金台(夕照) is/was a real place. I’m not sure if it’s specifically the Golden Terrace referenced in the book. Looking up the former Miao Family Estate would also probably give results. It’s one of the 8 Great Yanjing Sites, and the only info in English I could really find was on tourism websites.
Wheezing the entire time, you two are gold. But here are some things I wanna add/clarify based on my understanding of the things.
*1.* Stitch-sama, their first time 🍆 wasn't Fu Shen LOL, it's totally YXH. And he was totally like "I won't do anything about it, I'll chant heart sutra and it'll go away" to which Fu Shen rolled his eyes and took matters into his own hands 😏. (Once again, please listen to this scene in the AD as well, it's hot).
*2.* I love the research you did for Golden Terrace. In my head it's like a pavilion more than a stage (previous fan TL) or terrace. In the novel it's a hall of fame thing essentially, has pictures of previous eminent celebrated figures. It's an honor to have you pic up there when you die and your beloved family carries it there (essentially, your partner or your child). Fu Shen's entire ancestry has their pic there, so it's very important to him. They get married on Golden Terrace instead of a temple and FS bestows YXH with the duty to carry him up there when he dies (i.e. accepting him as his most beloved person).
*3.* You can actually say which one is which by their clothes. The Jiggy cap is actually worn by civilian officials, same with the robes that has flowing sleeves. On the other hand, when sleeves are tightly bound on the wrist by cloth or vambraces, it's a military style garment. Militaries don't wear flowing sleeves 'cause it can get caught in a battle situation and essentially cost you your life.
*4.* They have a 2 year age gap. Fu Shen's 23, Yan Xiaohan's 25. So yep, he is gege.
*5.* Fu Shen's not really a twink, Yan Xiaohan's just taller. Fu Shen's arm strength is amazing and he has that general aura. (yep, I'm a General Fu stan) There's an archery on horseback art from the AD where he looks that amazing. And as said, Yan Xiaohan by canon has a prettier face, he has done full drag before and it suited him.
*6.* Since it's not a spoiler anymore, I can speak about his disability. This is one of the novels which treats protagonist's disability seriously and doesn't do a magic potion stuff to completely cure him overnight. Yes, there is the fact where he plays up the degree of it, but he essentially doesn't lie. Even at the very end, he is still very much dependent on his wheelchair or prosthetics (those sexy thigh high boots). YXH actually takes advantage of this when they fight 😂. He'd hide the wheelchair and boots so Fu Shen can't move around at all and essentially has to depend on YXH to carry him around, which is a great opportunity to patch things up again (which is totally a foul play, and he needs to be punished).
I totally went off and wrote a lot LOL. BTW, *what do you think their weapon of choice is? Also who do you think is the crybaby in the two?*
P.S. I wanna ask Stitch her thought on the daddy (uncle) CP and whether she has read *Fight the Landlord and Fall in Love* .
Love your commentary!! I am utterly in love with this novel since i read this 3 yrs ago to the point that I was on various forums, messaging chinese friends on how things are translated or what some symbolisms mean, literally obsessed!! But it wasnt a big thing back then so i had a hard time looking for friends to fangirl about YXH :(

Also. Animal science major here, whether a bird can eat human food or not depends entirely on the type of bird. For what it's worth, birds ARE a lot more sensitive to inhaled toxins than mammals are though - that's where the whole "canary in a coal mine" thing comes from

For real. A friend of mine who grew up in Germany is still haunted by the memory of a camping trip that got derailed because someone saw a group of boars, so everyone camping in the same general vicinity gathered together into one bigger camp, put all the kids near the fire, and the adults took turns guarding the perimeter. Boars are hardcore
