In my experience a machinist jack needs a fine thread or better a differential thread to adjust accurately. Using a tap and die leaves you with a sloppy fit. I enjoyed watching but I suggest you cut both threads on your lathe. If you're not accustomed to this I understand your approach but if you start doing it you'll never go back. You can make any thread you like and make a tight accurate fit too. Fun to learn, fun to do. If you're insecure; attach a handle to your spindle end and turn the lathe by hand and avoid collisions at the end of the thread with broken tools and parts as a result.
