    Think about it this way, and this is a real eye opener (disclaimer: I'm a native American who spent time in New Zealand). The Maori are indigenous, just like we have the Navajo, Apache, Cherokee, Sioux, or my tribe, Choctaw. Each tribe has their own native language. Wash/rinse/repeat here for the Maori. The big difference here is that not only have they learned to respect, honor, and pay tribute to their indigenous people, but they have accepted them as equals in their culture, whereas some here in the US still regard we natives as inferior and treat them with disdain or mockery (for example, the Washington NFL team, the tomahawk chop, etc.).
    What we in the US need to do is take what the New Zealanders are doing with their natives and echo that sentiment up here. I was rather honored to learn Ka Mate, and the meaning of the composition behind it. What I would like to do is compose similar: a Haka, but using my tribe's language.
    Oh.. If you want to think abut it this way, think of a Haka like a school's fight song. Each school down there has their own Haka. Some their national sports teams have their own Haka as well:
    The Tall Blacks (NZ's national basketball team) has their own Haka; in fact, they went viral when they performed it against Team USA.
    The Maori All Blacks (rugby team, but is made up of those who are only of Maori descent) have their own Haka.
    The All Whites (NZ's Soccer team) has their own Haka.
    Some from NZ can correct me on this, but the men's teams for various sports can also perform Ka Mate or their own Haka, while the Maori All Blacks normally perform the Timatanga. In the NZ All Black's case, they either perform Ka Mate, or Kapa o Pango. Kapa o Pango is unique to the All Blacks, as they were instrumental in composing that Haka.
    Their women's teams have their own Haka as well.
    And more than that, there are Hakas that aren't even relative to sports, as some, like the Tika Tonu are performed at weddings.

    Win or die trying. As a caucasian Kiwi female, I knew the Haka from 5 yrs old. I spent 10 yrs across the US & can say categorically, The Haka is to Kiwi's what the Star-Spangled Banner & Flag combined are to Americans. It brings everyone together. Please watch the Haka for Jonah Lomu's funeral, NZ cried together that day.

    I'm Australian.
    About 15 years ago I went on a 3-day live-aboard SCUBA diving trip on the outer Great Barrier Reef in northern Australia (About 50 miles or 80 kilometres off the coast)
    Among the paying guests on board the boat were 6 Australian, 2 French guys, 3 American couples and a German girl.
    All the five crew members were Kiwis. There was the Captain, Dive-master, Dive instructor the deck-hand and the cook.
    When the trip was finished, we went back to the mainland to Cairns and that evening we had a farewell dinner and drinks in a bar in Cairns.
    Late in the evening, the five Kiwi crew members went and asked permission from the bar owner to do a Haka. We were pretty much the only people in the bar at that time (maybe another 4 or 5 people who weren't part of our dive group) Actually, I had a feeling that they knew the bar owner and I think he was also a Kiwi.
    There was a HUGE table, made out of a giant slab of wood from a tree. . the Kiwi guys all stripped down to shorts (no shoes or socks - it was in the tropics, of course) and got up on the table
    They started the Haka. . . All the Europeans and Americans were a bit puzzled and bemused for the first few seconds, but as the intensity of the Haka built up, many of them looked downright TERRIFIED, because they had *NO IDEA* what they were witnessing!
    We Aussies reassured the foreigners that it was all OK and that this was a Kiwi 'thing'.
    Well - By the end of the Haka, the three American women were crying and all the others were dumbstruck!
    They had never experienced something so POWERFUL and amazing in all their lives.
    It's one thing to watch a Haka on a screen, but to see it UP CLOSE it is *TOTALLY OVERWHELMING*

    Like New Zealand, Rugby in Wales is near to being a religion, these two countries are roughly the same population but I bet they both have twice the number of men and women that play rugby regularly compared to the USA. The USA may be a big country, but it’s a small rugby country by comparison.
    Talking about the Haka that are performed at the start of an All Black’s game, I was told by a New Zealander I worked with, the sticking out of the tongue during the Haka means I will soon taste your flesh and blood. Also the Ka mate which may or may not be banned at this time, is seen by many as being not needed in international rugby. The ka mate is the drawing of the thumb across the throat in a throat cutting motion. The gesture is said to mean the breathing in of spirit and building energy, but some All Black players stick out their tongues while drawing the thumb across the throat, which changes the meaning and spirit the ka mate gesture.
    Also, If you have Amazon Prime tv, you should be able to see all the Autumn Internationals being shown from the 6/11/21 or 11/06/21 if your from the US.

    • @williamgilbert6621
      @williamgilbert6621 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just a heads up from a kiwi here, "Kapa O Pango" is the name of the haka itself, the throat slitting gesture is the motion in the haka that has been changed to a motion across the chest (though I've noticed the odd player still does the throat one sometimes).
      Big respect to Welsh Rugby btw!

    • @chuckyboy6977
      @chuckyboy6977 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamgilbert6621 Thanks for pointing that out..
      I’ve researched it again and found that, Ka mate is the gesture of slitting the throat and kapa o Pango is the Haka in which the ka mate is the final gesture. I’m from the original ( probably not the best) Canterbury in England, I have a NZ mate that moved from Canterbury NZ to Canterbury Eng, he went to uni here, while working in a bar( as per the stereotype) had a few year of partying after uni then move from Canterbury Eng back to Canterbury NZ.

    • @mrtnite9780
      @mrtnite9780 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Buddy I am Maori, so I will tell you what it means.
      Ka mate is the name of one of the haka performed by the all blacks, and it simply means death. It is death, I am dead, I die - it means all of those things all at once.
      The slit cutting motion is not called ka mate - although it can be symbolized to mean "ka mate". It is a gesture that can mean anything from "I have taken your life force" to "I defeated the odds against me" to "death do us part". This motion is used in hundreds of different haka within Maori Culture, and most of the time it doesnt symbolize anything to do with ka mate.
      The protruding of the tongue is called a pukana. And while it useto mean "I will eat you" in the literal sense, it is now used as a symbol to proclaim triumph over adversity.

    Dan Carter comment about 'preforming the haka before the game no matter what nothings gonna stop us.' I cant remember the team, (it was on a northern hemisphere tour) but for some reason they didn't want it preformed on the ground cause of time restriction or something, so they held play up by preforming in the changing room before entry the field which took up more time.

    I'm curious to hear your opinion on the American commentating (The USA vs NZ 2014 match) vs. the other matches' commentating that you've seen. I felt like the AmerIcan commentators was a bit more bias, also calling out mistakes like forwards, which a normal commentator in rugby wouldn't do, until the referee calls it out first. And of course, aaaall the stats they can gather, player sizes, heights, history ect. I'm guessing they were probably Amercan Football commentators asked to commentate on the rugby match.
