      metalhead2508 I couldn't agree more, the Prius is the definition of automotive hypocrisy, but he was just being sarcastic in the video.

      metalhead2508 Thats a myth.
      I hate the prius as much as the next guy, but that "the batteries are worse for the environment than what they safe" is just not true and makes you sound like the climate change deniers.

    • @crispinsugita9398

      keithwenttothemoon So true. But I'm sure that a lot of prius drivers only really care about the fuel economy.

      metalhead2508 battery recycling facilities exist, and are used quite commonly.

      LedKenji666 Are you an expert in industrial carbon footprints? Probability decides against it; If you were, you would have a more professionally decent conduct, not to mention something to contribute to the conversation, let alone society. So basically what I'm saying is: If you can't contribute positive and constructive thinking, then at least have the decency to filter your stupidity as so not to contaminate anybody else's intelligence... and stop being a troll - to become a troll on the internet is like being a piece of fecal matter in a sewage treatment facility; you are one of many, functionally like any other - just another P.O.S.
      And yes, the industrial methods to gain the required materials to manufacture a *single* battery bank outweigh the benefit to driving a hybrid after you take into effect:
      1. The mining process - The combined affect the large machines (powered by immense internal combustion engines themselves) have on the atmosphere and on the land, strip mining millions of tons of landmass to acquire the raw minerals, which then need to be refined through...
      2. The refining process - The use of highly caustic chemicals, which the reaction(s) with the minerals to separate and clean them release toxic and carcinogenic vapors into the atmosphere, to create a readily usable (albeit inefficient) alkaline metal, where it then gets sent to be manufactured through processes already applied to other batteries.
      And what's worse is the batteries are powering the vehicles under 40mph, which is fine until you account that the majority of travel in the US is on freeways and interstates, which the speed limits of which are higher than 40mph, So really, anybody is better off just using a standard vehicle.
      The only benefit to a Prius is: when *trying* be eco-friendly by driving under 40mph, you are in turn slowing other people down, and reducing *their* carbon footprint, just as Engineering Explained Jason was experiencing in the video!
      Cheers mate,
      Alaester Nikolai Modern.

  • @shadetreegiants9407
    @shadetreegiants9407 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There are way too many Corvette haters out there. I think that it's because they don't understand what it stands for. The Corvette is an American Icon that represents the American Dream. This car is not some Eurotrash bi-turbo German-overengineered pretentious POS that leaks oil after 10,000 miles. This is a car with a legendary small block V8 that can thrill and corner well for around $60,000. Also, I can guarantee that most of the haters have never driven one (or any of the cars that they claim are better).

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shade Tree Giants It's a wonderful car. No need to hate on the Germans though. :) They make phenomenal machines!

    • @shadetreegiants9407
      @shadetreegiants9407 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Engineering Explained Ok, so maybe the Germans do make wonderfully enjoyable cars, but I think my point still stands. The Corvette isn't trying to be anything other than what it is: A fun and relatively affordable thrill machine. My dislike of German cars stems from a series of problem-riddled BMWs, but the Germans do know how to make fun cars in general. Would you rather have the Corvette or a Cayman GTS?

    • @OhMyKMPR
      @OhMyKMPR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shade Tree Giants When you buy a Porsche you will buy it because of the history and quality that is attached to it. You can't really compare these cars. The Corvette is a hot blooded sports car while the Porsche is more of a luxury item and a status symbol. Being from Germany, though, I have to say I'd rather get a Corvette for the massive V8, an engine that is very rare here.

    • @shadetreegiants9407
      @shadetreegiants9407 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      OhMyKMPR
      I agree with you. Another person commented below that he would rather have the Porsche Cayman GTS, so that's why I asked the question. I agree that Porsche's are more luxurious and have more prestige. The Corvette is more of a working-class sports car (although they can be quite expensive when optioned out). I would rather have the Corvette as well, although I'm not wealthy enough to afford either, lol. I'm waiting for the Honda Civic Type R to hit the US.

    • @GammaCruxis
      @GammaCruxis 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shade Tree Giants Not to be coy - but I wasn't aware that this specific car was listed as part of an overarching philosophical ideology of individual worth and success. :P
      But I will agree it's a good car. Big engines are not my cup of tea though

None of these electronic crap that requires you to take your car to the dealer for every little issue. Also, this corvette stingray allow you to only run on 4 cylinders. @oddball0045 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jonathan Roberson the small block Chevy series engines work very well for GM, they're lighter than most 6 cylinders while having double the displacement.
      An LS engine with overhead cam would make on average 10% - 15% more power for the same displacement pushrod engine. So if you're in GM's position, why make an engine bigger and heavier when you can just add displacement to the OHV design and still make it lighter and smaller.

    I've always wondered. should American cars such as this be "Supercharged or Turbocharged" because turbos give a higher power output than superchargers...

    • @Duskconqueror
      @Duskconqueror 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VISH_AZ Both :) Superchargers haven't got the lag that you experience with turbocharged cars because they are powered by the engine itself. On the other side, turbochargers don't need to be powered be the engine to charge the engine because they are powered by exhaust gas. There are VNT/VGT turbochargers (variable geometry) that reduce lag, multi-turbo lag-reducing configs (a little turbo to spin up quick and then power an additional bigger turbo (or more) for top end power) but there are also hybrid-charge configurations. In that scenario a supercharger is paired with a (big) turbo to completely get rid of the lag.

    Why does this car at 0:20 have a clear and distinctive color separation and difference between the front fender and the door? The color change is cut along the door gap as if the front fender was wrecked and repainted poorly in a non matching shade? I discount any claim that its just the angle of view because any shade would not cut along the door jamb gap the way that does. What's up???

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stew2460 The panels are at different angles from one another, so they look like different shades from that camera angle. The exterior is nearly flawless.

    • @Stew24100
      @Stew24100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engineering Explained ... Well, the explanation of it is certainly not going to solve world hunger or anything really important, but I still cant see how any angle can produce such a defined "cut line" that ebbs and flows as it does and maintain that distinct color difference. Some of the darker panel would certainly bleed over from the fender to the door if it was just an angle. "Light" cannot be constrained and made to slam on brakes just because it's transferring from the fender to the door.

      Probably in touring mode. Most cars will dull the throttle response in a touring/eco mode. Switch to sport and it'll react quicker.
