And that is basically what precipitated the decision. Why does Pluto get elevated above other similar bodies like Ceres and Eris? At least Pluto no longer has to feel awkward at the big planets' table when they talk about clearing their orbits.

I think they crossed back in the 2010's. Pluto is now back outside Neptune's orbit, but it was inside from its first discovery until after it got demoted. It'll be a few hundred years until it crosses back in again, iirc.
