Love the clay block videos! I think it would be cool if you put a piece of plywood or cardboard behind target to see what the bullet does to it after it comes out of the clay. If it does make it thru.
I thought that I saw part of the .22WMR bullet inside the clay block in the first test. What was the rifle that you used to shoot the .22LR? Another interesting thing about the .22LR block test is that the bullet didn't expand the block at all. With the .22WMR, the block was expanded significantly, particularly on the top. All of the energy from the .22LR went directly through the block on a cone shape.
A few observations... I suspect the results from both rounds would have been more violent/dramatic/damaging if the clay blocks weren't half frozen. I was surprised how small the exit hole was on the 22 Mag, again that might be due to the block being half frozen. I'm very impressed by all of the damage caused by a 17 grain projectile! Finally there are faster 22 Mag rounds, that CCI round even comes in a higher velocity +V version. Fun vid Adam!
The 22lr v/s 22 mag Was very interesting. I would like to see more test on those two Maybe a ballistic gel test or maybe try different types of bullets It seems like the mag dumps all its energy at once and the LR pushes through more
Modern, current production 22lr is just so versatile, more than it's ever been. I love it. You can get lightweight, hyper velocity varmint rounds or heavy subsonic suppressor rdy stuff. Rounds like Velocitors that will (when fired from a full length bbl), mimic energies close to that of 380 from a pocket pistol. Pretty good option for defense from a rifle IMO. Love some 22 for sure. We live in an awesome time to enjoy firearms 👍
I think the .22 Mag probably won, but I also think you hit with the .17 HMR at a weird angle & that might have affected it. I'd like to see this test with FMJs.
They both hit on the corner. 17hmr did what it always does, blew up on impact. The 22wmr expanded and caused more damage with more penetration. You can drop a hog with the wmr, don't think I'd try it with a hmr.
This comes down to ammo selection, those TNT rounds for the 17hmr are made to explode upon impact compared to other hollow points and fmj rounds, hence the name TNT on the box.
I think the 17hmr gets a better initial impact energy but doesn't carry through very well because of its weight and the 22 mag really holds its energy and has more overall energy
the 22 mag in this example does have more overall energy. The 17 has about 330 joules while the 22 has about 420 joules. surprising since the 17 is moving a lot faster, and kinetic energy increases much greater with velocity.
I would love to see these comparisons in handguns at room ranges (fifteen to thirty feet) in the clay blocks for people who, for whatever reason, want/have to use a small caliber bedside gun. Noisewise, recoil, size, amount of rounds in some, really makes them a viable option for some. Before all of the haters come in, I know bigger is better but if you really don't think they are an option for some people, feel free to stand twenty feet away and take a few rounds and tell me how it feels. ;-) And I have multiple guns (long and short) in multiple calibers and carry a .380 or 9mm myself most of the time. I am also a pretty good shot (even under pressure) and would consider a .22LR or mag with a bunch of rounds as an option since I know I can put all of the rounds in the important places pretty quickly. :-) I would still love to see the two and the damage they do in the clay at realistic ranges. Great videos and always entertaining!
@@davidh9659 to be fair, neither the .22 or .17 will have a ton of energy left at those distances, but it’ll be easier to hit the target with the 17, simply because of the trajectory.

I think a better/closer comparison would have been the 25 grain 22 Mag ammo vs the 17HMR. Hornady makes a 20 XTP load for the HMR. At least the 25 grain Mag load would have been closer to the 17 grain bullet. While I do agree that 22 Mag would win regardless, I believe the off center shot with the 17HMR made a difference in this test.
Have you shot any of Federals 30 gr. Ammo with the Speer TNT bullet? I've shot it out of both of my AMT Automag 2's into some homemade gelatin blocks very impressive. The hollow point goes about 90% through the bullet. The pedals come off and go evert which way.
This is a very good video you have got me wanting to start using Norma ammunition I've never tried it but I'm definitely going to I have a Marlin model 60 semi-auto in 22 long rifle I bet that ammo would do a number on a squirrel 🐿️
The .17 hmr is definitely the superior round for its intended purpose: Varminting. You need to expend all that energy with less than 6 inches of penetration, and even though the .22 wmr has more steam, it's wasted in the dirt behind your target and not in the target itself.
Wasted? I don't think so, 2 holes are better than 1 any day. Shoot coyotes with these 2 holes bleed far more and faster. A 17 in the lungs will raise hell with a lung shot but the 22 mag does it better between the little rounds.
17 is a frangible round IIRC.. designed to break up and make several would channels... all energy delivered TO the target... maximum shock...22 mag blew thru....
@@Luckyrider1958 so the true test would have been to use TNT frangible rounds of both 17 and 22mag, or both non-frangible rounds, as the TNT rounds perform very differently from the standard rounds from my personal experience... that would have made it more interesting!
.22mag !! You can tell that the temperature of the clay had an effect; usually that .22mag blows through bigger. Whoops ! Just caught that the clay in the earlier shots was 10 pounders at 12 yds and these today were 15 at 100. I don't know.
17HMR just because of the velocity. Amazing little round. Doesn't like a dirty bore. 50 rounds through my Savage and groups would double in size. Clean it and I was back in buisness. Edit after results- Wonder what the v-max version of each would do. I was suprised of the results. Typically 22 mag doesn’t expand and the 17 explodes..
.22lr is my favourite by far with .17 an easy second place, (super accurate out to 150yrds or at least it’s easy to DOPE it). But that being said the .22 WMR was amazing!
Know why people keep asking for more rimfire stuff? It's because you're the best at talking about rimfire ammo, the best I can find anyway. I quibble with your opinions sometimes, but I can't find anyone else who really considers the relative merits of rimfire, so thanks for that
Hoping to see some Norma .22 lr eco power clay block test. It’s the same as the eco speed but a hollow point! I got some in January from Norma shooting website.
There is a gent in our area, who has been hiring himself and his .22 Magnum rifle (I have no idea what make or model) out to several of our local farmers for cayote control since about 2000. I've been told he has rarely needed to take a second shot on any cayote due to the massive damage the .22 Mag does. I wish I knew of anyone in our area that uses a .17hmr for similar purposes but since the ammo is so rare around here, I can only assume no one is. Come to think of it, as I type, I can't recall seeing a new or used .17hmr for sale since we moved back home in 2019. I know I could stock up on .22 Magnum ammo with ease if I owned a rifle or revolver in the caliber but finding 17hmr ammo would be a real pain.
I gotta say that 22 lr was a very satisfying hole in the clay. Honestly I'd bake that clay and try to keep its shape, then place it someone for people to enjoy. That'd be my kind of art.

Awesome video. I've found quite a bit of rimfire ammo online but some of it is expensive.
Which is more effective on a mid=size Military Drone? and how many rounds ?
Another really fun video! 😀
🙏🙏🙏
22. Mag!! , way less wind drifting (17 hmr don’t like wind at all)
This video came at the perfect time, I was trying to decide which to get out of these
Thanks for watching Joe
I think a better/closer comparison would have been the 25 grain 22 Mag ammo vs the 17HMR. Hornady makes a 20 XTP load for the HMR. At least the 25 grain Mag load would have been closer to the 17 grain bullet.
While I do agree that 22 Mag would win regardless, I believe the off center shot with the 17HMR made a difference in this test.
Here's an idea. How about comparing a .222 against a .444 in the clay block test? I know they're totally different but it would be fun!
Never heard of a .444.
The triple deuce vs the triple quad
I love the clay blocks. Oh no Mr. Bill!
😳😳😳
Bwahahaha!
Have you shot any of Federals 30 gr. Ammo with the Speer TNT bullet? I've shot it out of both of my AMT Automag 2's into some homemade gelatin blocks very impressive. The hollow point goes about 90% through the bullet. The pedals come off and go evert which way.
I have
Wow! Nice video. I would not have expected the 22LR would have that exit hole!
Surprised me
The 17 and the 22 mag still have a lot of power at 100 yards
have I missed the 410 100 yard shooting video you was going to try? also what scope you running on 17hmr
This is a very good video you have got me wanting to start using Norma ammunition I've never tried it but I'm definitely going to I have a Marlin model 60 semi-auto in 22 long rifle I bet that ammo would do a number on a squirrel 🐿️
Either way, freaking love you who tee!!! would love to bring you down to come hunt here in North Ga!! lmk
🦌🦌🦌
Love them both, i like 17 because i tend to get better accuracy
.22mag !! You can tell that the temperature of the clay had an effect; usually that .22mag blows through bigger. Whoops ! Just caught that the clay in the earlier shots was 10 pounders at 12 yds and these today were 15 at 100. I don't know.
The .22 WMR is a highly underrated cartridge these days, but every farmer and rancher has one!
so wtw have you ever used the 17 for hunting? how'd it work out?
Awesome video WTW, as always! 22 mag is awesome, but 17 HMR is no slouch brother! I love em all, (just like you!🤣)🤘🏽🤘🏽🇺🇸👊🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
17HMR just because of the velocity.
Man I didn't see that coming thanks for the video and I still like Spitzer rounds
Know why people keep asking for more rimfire stuff? It's because you're the best at talking about rimfire ammo, the best I can find anyway. I quibble with your opinions sometimes, but I can't find anyone else who really considers the relative merits of rimfire, so thanks for that
Appreciate you watching 🙏
That was awesome would like to see what the 17 wsm would do to the clay or the 17 hornet
Hoping to see some Norma .22 lr eco power clay block test. It’s the same as the eco speed but a hollow point! I got some in January from Norma shooting website.
Sweet video brotha!!
Hey can you do some vids on the .17hm2 -17msch 2
Making sure I commented from last night, I had 22mag for the clay win against 17hmr. But was surprised how good 22lr did. Thanks WTW
Both are impressive calibers
Have you done the new 17 hornet vs 17 win super mag rf
I'd like to hear your intro song all the way through! Great vids!
Appreciate you watching
I gotta say that 22 lr was a very satisfying hole in the clay. Honestly I'd bake that clay and try to keep its shape, then place it someone for people to enjoy. That'd be my kind of art.
Those 17hmr (TNT) ROUNDS are literally made to blow up hence the name "TNT". Try a regular hollow point or fmj 17hmr
👍
Never underestimate a rim fire, i've always been a fan of both .22 lr and wmr
Have you done a video on the 17 WSM?
Nope
Great video again ! A coyote would have a bad day with either one ……but I’m a 22 mag owner and fan so I’m gonna stay put with it . Appreciate ya and God Bless
What a great job of showing the ability of 22cal and mag to I can justify the difference in price.
WHO🦉T🦉WHOOO!!
You should use play-doh over top or mixed in with your clay... call it “colored clay”?
Give your clay some flavor to savor
The only big surprise was how well the 22 LR did at the end of the video.
It gave a new light on my 22 rifle, not as wimpy as people try to tell my it is!
Different mass of blocks, different distances and different temperatures. Comparing oranges to bananas.
Every party has a pooper 😝
Thank you very much I’ve been telling everybody that a 22 mag it’s still better than 17 HMR
The .17 is a great little new round, 😆.
The .22 mag @ 40 GN has been the rimfire monster for a good long time.
Been shooting the old "Chukster" for a long time...
WhoTeeWho back to you! 🤠
I worked in a gun shop and firing range for 6yrs. The .22magnum is a highly underrated round. I consider it a very potent personal protection round that you do not want to get hit with. Imagin that impact on your body?
22 mag enjoyed the video as always
wow didnt know my 22Lr could do that 😂
Yep
good video 👍
