    This episode covers the short career of Captain Bartholomew Roberts who ransacked the Caribbean over a three year period from 1719-1722. He raided the West Coast of Africa in 1721 and the next year was hunted down and found by the HMS Swallow, captained by Chaloner Ogle. In the confrontation Roberts was killed and his death is seen by many to mark the end of the Golden Age of Piracy

      That's kinda the thing to remember about pirates, gangsters and the underground in general. The more unstable the environment you inhabit, the less likely one is too have a long career or retire in any form. Dean O'Banion is another good example of this, struck down by the Chicago bootlegging wars during America's untenable prohibition. I.E. His family was ANYTHING but surprised his rivals murdered him. A handful of both pirates and mobsters did find ways out, but they where few and unlikely to sustain a post-career life.

    He's very famous in Wales, we call him "Barti Ddu" (Black Bart).
    He was responsible for writing the 'Pirate Code', and he made sure that his crew were always sober when at sea.
    One of the unique things he did was often wear full scarlet clothing when captaining.

    He was so successful because he controlled on his ships the great vice of all pirates that usually lead to their downfall: alcohol. Consuming alcohol was okay while on board, but he worked to control the amount being given out to his crew and limit drunkenness. He also acted as the chaplain on his ships and forced his crew to attend Sunday church service on top deck. Controlling alcohol rations meant that his crews were much more able to repulse nighttime pirate hunter ambushes which had ended the careers and lives of pretty much every other notable pirate legend.
    His downfall came because eventually he grew lax on the rules about alcohol due to threats of mutiny if he did not. Ogle's fleet ambushed Roberts', everyone was drunk off their ass, they put up a fight but not enough.

    A pirate is a thief on water. And thieves like money 💰. Making by definition Henry Avery as the most successful pirate after his successful raid with Thomas Two on the Arab/Indian black ship convoy. The captured sum was $700,000 gold as well as artifacts and spices/silks heading to the orient.

    Strategically, why would announce your intentions with a flag? If you're gonna kill someone, tell them you're not and get the jump on them and take less damage to your own ship and crew.

    • @KoIossov
      @KoIossov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If this is true, then most likely to not devalue the use of the black flag. If people learn that when pirates fly the black flag they'll kill you anyway, people will always resist to the best of their ability. When the use of the black flag has a credible reputation then people will be likely to just give up their cargo to spare their lives. So I guess many pirates used the black flag most of the time, but switched it over to the red flag when they came across somebody they really had a grudge against.
