The Scraps LIVE from Luray Caverns ✨
Caroline Scruggs' original theremin and voice track from her debut album SPACE, performed Live in Luray Caverns, Virginia.
The back story of this performance:
In September of 2023 my husband and I visited Luray Caverns in Virginia. This is the largest caverns on the east coast of the U.S. and I was absolutely enamored with the space.
I have this ongoing project called Playing the Air where I take my theremin to different breathtaking natural landscapes around the world and play whatever melody comes up for me in that moment, as a new way of connecting with nature, kind of giving that particular place a voice.
I knew I wanted to do that in the caverns, but I also wanted to play The Scraps down there, as it just felt like it would fit the atmosphere.
Once I had the vision, I was set on it. I was pretty persistent in getting in touch with their marketing team to tell them my vision and ask if it was possible…. And to my absolute delight, they said YES. So in March of 2024, with approximately one hour to record, we lugged down all my gear through the caverns, set up in the most breathtaking space, and began.
I got only 2 full takes, and we had some camera issues. So it didn’t come out perfectly.
But I think this is another moment for me as an artist, deciding on what to focus on. The product is not perfect… but it is very real, and very wondrous, and still worth sharing, I think.
And the experience itself… of being down in this millions-of-years old underground world that feels like another planet when it wasn’t filled with noisy people (it was just me, my brother/camera man, and our 2 lovely guides), was once in a lifetime. To introduce the frequencies of an instrument that these Dr. Suess-like structures, which grow ½ an inch every century, have never experienced before… was once in an eon.
To have this vision, and then actually carry it out and see it come to life… THAT was the filling part. I can only hope the magic of all of that comes through in the recording.

Playing theremin in the Oregon AIR ☁️
มุมมอง 370ปีที่แล้ว
Dusk is for nature’s chorus in Sisters, Oregon. The frogs begin their intricate rhythms, and I took the cue from them. Tune into this hypnotic atmosphere of sound and sky, and let it wash over you. I’m traveling the world with my theremin, playing the air of wild places I come across, just to see what they all sound like. Interested in the theremin or my gear recommendations? Behind the Scenes at the MOOG FACTORY 🐕

Yesterday marks 1 year since I brought my dog (and trusty camera-weilding husband Matt) to the Moog factory in Asheville, NA. The mission? To get a lesson about theremin science from the VP of engineering himself, Steve Dunnington, & explore under the hood of the new Etherwave theremin. (Ahem, the model I recommend to any new theremin enthusiast to begin on). Get it here: sweetwater.sjv.io/Or11...
Theremin on the remote Washington Coast 🌊
มุมมอง 412ปีที่แล้ว
Ruby Beach at Olympic National Park in Washington… where the rock giants jaunt around, out of the sand, where it’s so easy to feel like you’re a Goonie! Hauling our equipment down a winding path to this spot, it was all worth it to see what music would come out of this salty, misty air. I’m playing the Moog Etherwave theremin, taking her around the country to different wild spots that inspire t...
Playing theremin ✨👌🏼 under the Tree of Life
มุมมอง 482ปีที่แล้ว
The Tree of Life floats on a pocket of air - literally - somewhere on the remote Washington coast. We traveled there and climbed underneath this great tree. Her roots grasp onto the edges of land surrounding her, suspended by her own strength, creating a magic cove underneath. Here is what the air of that magical cove sounds like underneath the Tree of Life. Comment below the place you’d like t...

Learn how to wrap cable. And actually do it😂!!! Yes. And yes to Sweetwater!!❤
You obviously are a talented Theremini player and have good knowledge of this difficult to play instrument. However, I found your video almost unwatchable, due to the extreme number of video edits. You video comes across as a rather loud, manic irritating person who doesn't stop to draw breath or take a pause............ What a shame!
Just say you don’t like high energy people
So we have all these pricey moog theremins. How does the open theremin fit into this list? I think it is the only one where antenna functions can be swapped to accommodate to personal capabilities, right?
I have 11 trombones.
Stumbled upon your channel and have a question: Is there a Theremin with CV outputs for both antennas? I have a modular synthesizer, and I'm currently intrigued by the idea of using a Theremin as a controller for it. The sounds and effects of the Theremin itself don't matter much to me for now. To my knowledge, most Theremins only have a CV output for the pitch antenna.
Nice review, I’m going to get one ! - is this particular theremin good for a beginner if you don’t want to hook it up using the midi controller or anything? - I just want to use it as an instrument going through my amplifier?
The theremini is GREAT for a beginner to learn on, in my opinion! It's a budget-friendly option that's still a good quality instrument, and great all on its own... whether plugged into your amp or using its built-in speakers. I say go for it!
Can you believe this was invented in 1928? People didn't have "smart phones" but they knew how to interact with others & advance within society. Not with their faces buried in a phone completely enveloped & ignorant to the outside world & reality. "🤣🤣🤣" 🖕
Nice review, thanks
Cons for the Theremini - Hideous cheap looking design. Place this in a nice wooden box like the Etherwave and charge me a few hundred dollars extra please Moog.
Magical theremin club!
5:30 my 1000th first lesson 😅😅 but really one of the most informative.
Aside the moog theremin are there any other product? Or a good DIY circuit schematic for tinkerers 😊
The Theremin is built exclusively in Asheville NC. Moog had chosen Asheville as it's main and only headquarters. I mention that because it's totally cool to have such an amazing instrument produced less than a hour from where I live. If you have never played a Theremin, get the Theremini first. Despite all the presets, it is very hard to play. You must have steady hands. I find I can best play Celtic songs, but I get frustrated trying to play anything else. However, it is a thousand times easier to play than a basic Theramin. Good luck and have fun!!!
Magical theremin Club Please!
I've been wanting to learn this instrument for a while and decided to pick up a Theremini after watching this. It looks like a pretty good machine!
How have you found it to play? Are you able to play an actual song?
How are your notes so stable? I hold my hand in place and it jumps all over between half steps. Have tried calibrating and would like to learn how to play along the glissando rather than using pitch correction. Any advice would be super appreciated--great video!
Right before Alesis was purchased by Numark in 2001, I saw a prototype of a Theremin-like instrument that worked with an InfraRed beam. which allowed body movement while playing. Unfortunately, Alesis never developed a full-on IR Theremin-like instrument after the corporate takeover. sad face.
I love the fact that you move about so much when you’re not playing. . .since ya can’t do it when ya play the Theremin! Years ago, I had a Big Bear Theremin (signed by Bob Moog!), and not being able to move my body while playing drove me nuts. I sold it to a recording studio, and returned to studying the amplified harmonica(Really). The studio was happy. And, I am happy with my harps. Really.
a whole channel dedicated to Theremin!? I'm in!
You would be the theremin Queen
It's a trick question. You shouldn't get ANY theremin!
What about the stylophone theremin? A bit different but very affordable.
Fabulous 🎉
And that's the hot theremin lady!
Just wow!
please please please stop with all the cuts. You're selling theremins, not inducing seizures.
Have you ever watched a TH-cam video in your life?
🤣😭💀
Crikey. Maybe just listen to her reviews while looking away and this should prevent seizures. An occasional glance at the screen to check out these interesting quirky devices should be harmless.
Yes, constant cuts are hacky and annoying, not just visually, but the sound, too,
liked and subscribed!!! I love your energy! (just got the D-Lev Digital Theremin, looking forward to dive deeper into this new endeavor)
Lemme get that EPro off of you. Thanks. You can have my Claravox.
#goals Please teach me!!!!❤❤❤
Excited for you!! Which model did you buy? If you're interested in virtual private lessons, you can contact me through my website at carolinescruggs.com :)
MAGICAL THEREMIN CLUB🎉🎉🎉
I just bought 1 today, this video has me so inspired!
This instrument is like REM Pod or Ghost Finder
If you have a cat for each theremin..then YES ! Lol 😂
Hi! Will you be buying the Stylophone theremin? It's only $110 and there was a rush to secure a preorder.
Do you make sci-fi music soundtracks with any of your theremins?🪐👽
but what was the mod tho? you never told us. I have been playing for years on the same model as you, and I ordered the newer model, but moog sent me a dud/the weather damaged it -it arrived in weather in the negative numbers. Luckily I got insurance, and given my skill I was able to work with the CV controls and have it "passable," for a recording I was doing, but it just didn't work normally. Insurance wouldn't replace it cause it was still under manufacturers' warranty. Moog wouldn't cover it because I was missing a piece of cardboard included in the packaging. (yes. this is a thing.) So I will try again with insurance later this year, but in the mean time, where did you get the linearity mod from? I feel I know, but I just forget atm. Thanks! Is it Thierry's?
What a bummer! Hope insurance comes through. Yes, it’s Thierry’s mod 🎉
Nice video! Dont forget the ProxiMIDI by a company called "Copper and Cedar" ; not literally a theremin, but it is a theremin like midi controller for the midi curious !!!
I got ZERO "CRAZY LADY" VIBE. 🤪🤪🤪
This is very underrated what a lovely vid.
Does a Wedding Ring change anything ?? Do You Want One ??
Omg I want that claravox so much!
Gosh thank you so much for this video : )
@CarolineScruggs Do you know a good theremin teacher in the Charleston, SC area?
just got a theremin this evening, really. helpful @carolinescruggs
Brilliant! 🎉
Leon would love you! 😄
Love the Oregon strato volcanoes in the background!
Beautiful rendition! What a magical, spectacular location! I would love to hear more! Was it difficult to get permission to perform here?
