Me again:-) I did this drive yesterday. I'm pretty new to offroading, so this trail had several challenges that I was able to do, but scared the bajeepers out of me. Anyone thinking about this drive should know that the end-point, Butcher Jones Recreation Area is closed to OHV vehicles... They've completely baracaded the trail exit to the parking lot. This was a bummer...so close and yet so far away. To exit, you now have to navigate to Pobrecito (boat staging and OHV access).
Nice video. I used to go out to that area in my truck and jeep all the time. Looking forward to going back out once it cools down again. Jeep will be all sorts of upgraded by then. Looking forward to it. Keep Jeeping man.
Frank, thanks for this vid. I love this trip and plan to do it soon. Do you mind if I ask how you were able to record/display the real-time GPS coords as you drove? Software? Hardware? Service? Did you need satellite device? Cell? I'm a newbie researching communication gear and needs. Thx.
All dash cams have the GPS info embedded in the video file, you need to use telemetry extraction software that allows it to be overlaid onto the video file. Action cams can have this telemetry data too, if they have a GPS chip, for example GoPro Hero 9 & newer embed it but older models don’t (no chip). For the dash cam you just need a large enough SD card to record the whole days drive.
Looks like a fun drive. Are you guys part of a club? I'm a newbie with little experience hoping to hook up with some experienced drivers for drives like this one. Thx.
My family and I are somewhat new to offroading (clubs, rather) and we'd possibly be interested in hitting a trail with you sometime. I know Central AZ very well as I was born and raised hereso I know a lot of good trails. My wife is disabled so therein lies the problem of doing solo trips with her and the kids. I have a 97 Tahoe that I'm currently rebuilding in to my offroad rig.
Hey good morning Frank. Just watched your video great job really enjoyed it a lot. Question for you. Do you by chance have Tav your trail on a mapping app that you possibly can send to me.. We've done that ride but never the way you did it I would like to try it sometime.. I use all trails the most Just checking to see if you possibly have it on any mapping app that you can direct me to. Thanks so much great job. Randy
Thanks! Can't send a .gpx file via the comment box but this link will take you to the the route/gpx we used. But you will have to plot an exit route to (33.594957, -111.542257) because of a locked gate. www.jeeptheusa.com/saguaro-lake-the-rolls-30.html
Another great video, I really enjoy how you put these together. I did this trail in the fall of 2021. I think I will hit it again soon.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoy them.
Nice video. I was just out there with a group. We didn't do your run but we were all over the place having a good time. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, glad you liked it.

Any passes/permits required? Looking for a trail for this summer with the family and one that takes us to water in August sounds about right.
Arizona Land Use permit, valid for one year

Hey couple of questions, do you think a stock '19 ranger XLT make the journey down? Also how long on average to make it to the coves?
If it has 4 wheel drive, yes. From where we started it took about 75 minutes.

Yes we’re part of a club, but from San Diego. Best to search for a local club, they will welcome new people.
