BTW, I still haven't flown my Freewing F-14 yet, and now that I see E-flite is coming out with a 40mm Tomcat I'll probably have to get that. Hope you review it when the time comes!
Hi Chris, great video, very helpful! Can you possibly do a video on the freewing f14 setup, it would be great if you could do a video on how to set up the plane in the radio as you did with the f16, we can't seem to figure out when you sweep the wings back, how to stop the ailerons and flaps from moving, a setup video would help greatly, thanks
Thanks! Good call on the su-30. For me, I like to have the gyro setup fairly passively, so I don’t do much related to heading hold. Based on folks who’ve used it, you either love it or hate it, haha
Chris good looking jet and flight. Can you list the channel hook up with the AR10360T ? When I set up on my NX10 it seems to put control surfaces on some odd channels. I just did the software update on my NX and I have read that that is one of the Spektrum bugs. Thanks
I will have to go look, but am currently traveling. You can move those channel assignments around however you like them though in the channel assign menu. So, I wouldn’t let that hold you up if it is. Just move things to where you want them.
Hi Chris, I love your channel. My wife got me the Freewing F-14 as an early Christmas gift. I am not good with mixings and I am planning to get the 10 channel rx from spektrum with as3x and safe. I have the NX10 radio. You mentioned that you are running that rx in the tomcat. Is it possible to update the spektrum file on your website so others like myself can download it?
Cool! The file I have available should work on the nx10. Just needs to be transferred onto the radio from a memory card. That said, I am planning to do a similar video to this one on the f-14 programming. It’s not been started yet though.
@@Thercgeek ok, thanks Chris. I will wait for the video. It’s going to be awhile before I get her up in the air since I’m going to give her a new paint job. Gotta give her the Top Gun livery. Lol.
@@Thercgeek Hey Chris I, too, have an F14 and would be interested in a Spektrum receiver setup video. I have the AR8360 in it since I only have the DX9. Also, I set up SAFE on it, too, as I'm definitely just an intermediate pilot. It saved my F14 on the maiden as I struggled with it diving and rolling as soon as it got in air. While trying to sort out the trims it got far enough away that I lost orientation and it was beginning an inverted dive. I had to flip on SAFE which level it out. I was able to get it back and trimmed her. Without SAFE that would have been a one and done maiden! Video at: th-cam.com/video/TeCPtw-0uJQ/w-d-xo.html I fly with AS3X but do have the SAFE self-level feature on a switch for just this purpose - don't use the other SAFE features. It has saved many jets. Anyways would be very interested in a AR/F14 video which includes how to set up the flaps to go up when wing sweep is enabled. And explain how that works. I have it setup on my F14 based on the DX file you have on the site but somehow it quit working. Thanks for all you do - I learned so much from your channel.
Thank you! The panic button is a good feature for sure. I’ll keep in mind what you’ve mentioned when I put that vid together. Appreciate the suggestions! I still haven’t been able to get fresh video of the tomcat since finishing it. 😕
Primary flight control surfaces are fixed on Spektrum, once you select aircraft/wing type it’s locked and loaded. channel assignments are fixed. some may wonder why not pick the Taileron wing type ? If you do you’d loose your mixing ability and is "hard" mixed at 75% with the ailerons and active all the time. I prefer the dual elevator type setup. the ONLY thing I don't get why they use a different connector vs other spektrum receivers ?? exacto knife need to make servo connectors fit. great vid!!!
Thanks! It all starts with the right config in Spektrum. I started with taileron but as you said, that locked me in with tailerons all the time which wasn’t what I wanted and so took this approach. 😊
Using tailerons with flaperons causes the elevators to roll as flaps are deployed. You can trick the receiver into using the stabs as tailerons but use dual elevators in the transmitter. I covered this in my F-15 setup video but I don't want to plug my content on Chris's channel - unless he's cool with it.
@@Thercgeek Must've missed that part. Sorry! Edit: Watched through again and didn't see what I was referring to. What I'm saying is if you set the receiver as a taileron tail type but then set the transmitter back to dual elevator, you'll get full AS3X stability on the stabilators - both roll and pitch, not just pitch. This is incredibly helpful on the F-16 as full flaperon deployment means that there is little, if any, roll correction being done due to having the flaperons maxed out. You do have to adjust the gain settings though, otherwise you'll get wobbling from the additional stability of those stabilators.
I get that. I generally stick with the oem stuff as I’ve been really happy with them. That said, My friend has used lemon rx’s with good success, but I don’t have any personal experience with them.
Hi Chris, do we need a minimum of 10 channel receiver and transmitter to get this Flaperons and Tailerons set up? I only have the DX9 thats why im asking :) thank you
Man spektrum has to get a clue!!! I’m absolutely NOT buying a $170 receiver for each of my 31 planes!!!! This exactly why I have changed to the radiomaster tx16s and can buy a good receiver for $46! So long spektrum!!
I understand where you’re coming from. At the end of the day though the best radio system is the one that gives you the performance you’re looking for, you know? For me, Ive been very happy with the spektrum gear performance and am willing to pay the higher price for that confidence i have in the gear. But I do understand on the price point for sure.
@@Thercgeek yeah. My v1 dx8 has been crashing planes pretty much from day one. I’ve been flying for 39 years and started with futaba but switched to spektrum back when bnf was starting to be a thing. With a dx7se first then spent the coin on a dx8 and almost immediately started having problems. I will be darned if I will put that on a $4000 plane!!!😬
I have a 6 channel receiver that came with the F-16, is it possible to program both flaperons and tailerons on the 6 channel receiver that came with it or can it only program one of them?
I use the green frog tape and generally haven’t had issues. The baby powder is good insurance to avoid lifting the paint, but it’s important to not to put too much otherwise the tape won’t seal.
I never point the 1st or 2nd antenna toward the nose or tail. Antennas don't work off the ends. I always use switch D for flaps. And, I put the transmitter's flight modes on switch D and enable the F-mode trims for ailerons and elevator. This lets me set the aileron and elevator trims for each position of the flaps..
Yep, all good tips. It’s about personal preferences mostly. On the antennas, that’s where having them at 90deg in different planes is good. There will always be some aircraft attitude where the antenna will be point towards you, but with the second in a different plane and direction, you have redundancy.
Chris I appreciate the video and details on set -up. Just had a couple of questions. I have the 8 channel receivers AR 8360T same as the 6 and 10 and I am planning on using it. You didn’t show the channel set up in the receiver but I’m assuming it would be Throttle Rudder Right Aileron Left Aileron Right Elevator Left Elevator and Gear for a total of 7 channels being used correct?? Could you give me the channel listings as what you did ? Thanks again Great video!
Thanks! When you setup the configuration, the radio lists out what channels are what. I can look it up when I’m home from work and get back to you, but once you set the flaperon and tail configs, go into the channel list and it’ll tell what should go where. Oh, and I am using one additional channel for the afterburner too.
Hey Chris is there any way you would list your channel assignments please ? I’m having an issue with my tailarons are reversed and reversing the elevator servos does not fix it. When servos are reversed then when in regular elevator position it is backwards pull up and it goes down. Aircraft type is correct flaperons and two elevators just about tried everything that I know to try. Could it possibly be in the mix? Ail to elevator? Thanks for your help in advance
Assuming you setup the model type as mentioned, It’s all labeled in the radio. They’re labeled at RAL, REL, LAL, LEV where AL is aileron and EL is elevator.
What I have done is to use masking tape to lift them up with mixed success. Otherwise, I just paint over them. The sticker type are easier in that sense since you can lift them up.
I prefer the brush on minwax poly as it tends to dry harder. After that’s applied, I lightly sand and then apply multiple coats of primer sanding in between coats. This is what smooths it all out. This is the latest vid I talk through the process: th-cam.com/video/nQX9aXoNeVI/w-d-xo.html
@@Thercgeek thanks appreciate it. I did watch the video. Some people say 2 coats of minwax but I don’t need the jet to be a paperweight plus I think it’s overkill. Like you said primer sand primer will get it smooth
That landing at the beginning was BEAUTIFUL! I could only wish to land my 70mm like that!
Thanks! The flaperons/tailerons really helped the landings with the 80mm. I really like it.
