    I am a skeptical 64 year old and have eaten dairy and meats for all my life. As I've been getting older I have noticed increased stiffness in joints all over the body with particular problems in the right shoulder. I had a gall bladder removal about 3 years ago and my digestion and stools never really returned to normal.
    As an experiment I have avoided all animal protein and dairy for only 3 weeks. In this short space of time my stiffness and shoulder problems have disappeared, my bowels have returned to normal and I seem to be walking much, much faster. Overall, I have more energy and seem less forgetful. This particular experiment will not be ending. Thanks Colin.

    Many thanks for this video, I like you, avoided giving any advice on nutrition to my patients for over thirty years because I saw the subject as a "can of worms", fads, money making books, money making dietary systems, pressures from the food industry, pressures from the supplement industry and the lack of knowledge and training of doctors. Until I read "The China Study", then everything changed for me. I enrolled on the eCornell University Plant Based Nutrition Certification Course, I now incorporate "Whole Plant Nutrition" into all my consultations.

I am lighter than I’ve been for over 20 years too. I have gone from vegetarian to vegan now and will never go back. Thanks so much for the superb explanation. Unfortunately I put some weight back on and am about to try and lose some of it again. You can still eat unhealthily being a vegan - crisps, peanuts and especially dark chocolate! I myself do the ketogenic diet. I do not knock anyone who has a different point of view or chooses a different path. With that being said. I believe in a person's right to believe in and practice what they want. Now with that being said that I believe we have been all made differently. Some of us can eat dairy and others not.some meat and others not. Simply put there is no such thing as a one size fits all diet. I myself love fresh veg and grow my own but I also love meat as well. I balance the two and with the diet I am following (I tweaked it to benefit me) and have seen amazing results. I no longer have biomarkers for diabetes my bmi has went from 40% down to 33% and recent tests have been positive. I wish that people all over could have a peaceful dialogue and not try to throw shade and proselytize others. I wish for us to come together and share to help benefit others who so desperately need to better themselves both mentally and physically. Peace and blessings.

Thank you for explaining the main chunk of the book (108 pages) and further explaining the benefits of the "China Study" and how it really does make sense once someone takes it into true context. A good example of this is "Kris Carr's" journey of battling her rare form of cancer and how she used this diet to help keep the cancerous cells stable, and not growing. Amazing! Thank you for a great summary of the book. I’m finishing it now and want to organise the information in order to pass it to others. Well done, I enjoyed watching your video. Just one comment would be that you didn’t say anything radical like - going fully vegan for one month that was highly recommended in the end of the book. I myself am vegan for the last 2 years and I cannot imagine a better more healthy diet than this.
    And from what I see in other people, most of us just don’t want to admit that our eating habits are that much wrong… it’s hard to admit and it takes time to fully switch to a plant based diet , but it’s one of the best things I did in my life. Abd I’m walking not just about the planet but more about my personal well-being.
    Let me know what you think and if you had a chance to try it.

    In Exp 2, what kind of animals are you talking about? clearly the type of animals would matter. some animals are probably not designed to eat protein. while others are. if you do this study of protein on cats for ex, do you get the same results? some animals eat mostly protein, so if you feed it more protein would have the same effect on foci as feeding a rabbit for ex (ie herbivore) lots of protein?

    Here sugar consumption, carbohydrates were ignored. So this study is incomplete and partial. High amount of carbohydrates along with high animal protein is dangerous.

  • @sonim4858
    @sonim4858 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The assumption is that that casein represents animal protein and gluten is representative for plant protein. The only finding is that if you eat over 5% of your calories or more in casein that promotes cancer grow. But who does that. Even in milk only one part of the protein is casein. And gluten is a very special protein which is present in wheat and by no means stands as the plant protein. Which kind of diet consists of more then 10 or even 5% casein?

      The more I learn, the more it seems that everyone's body has slightly varying needs. That there's no "one diet" for all. All that to say, these days I'm 95% plant-based, but have developed slight alterations that I feel work best for my body.

    Did I miss you saying this - is this accurate?.... This is how they got these results. They took half the study participants and had them do 10 years low casein and other half high casein. The high casein got cancers vs low casein didn't.... then they switched the diets and the health results reversed. ie it had nothing to do with genetics (sorry about the boobs Angelina) and mostly to do with diet. As a population we typically repeat the habits of our family growing up, thus reactivating health problems generationally - making it look like genetics when in reality its habits.

      It's both genetics , or moreso gene expression and diet. Epigenetics plays a large roll. There is no one diet fits all. And everyone cherry picks studies to suit their agenda. Look at the diets and lifestyle of centurions.

    Great summary... some food for thought: This book implicates protein. Was Warburgs discovery taken into consideration? (Cancer ferments glucose primarily) .. that's a solid fact. its known as the "Warburg effect" in modern oncology and exploited in P.E.T. scans to find tumors...Wouldn't this suggest that high protein and high carb diets are carcinogenic? Dr. T. Seyfried relates that all cancers ferment either glucose (sugar) or glutamine (most common amino acid used in making protein in the human body)....again, Wouldn't this suggest that cancer uses primarily sugar and protein to thrive? Seyfried and Dagostino have reversed full metastatic cancer in mice using only food (high fat keto) and hyperbaric treatment. If we consider that we are wrong about the only macronutrient left, fat, being toxic, wouldn't the China Study tend to lend credence to a high fat, lower protein and very low carb diet? a keto diet? aren't most green vegetables very high in nutrition and water and fiber and very low in carbs and protein (5%vegetables because they are only comprised of that many carbs and most is fiber)? ...isn't fat (fatty organs like liver) also very high in vitamins and minerals and fat but with no carbs and lower in protein as compared to meat? isn't this in keeping with what Cordain, Epps and Eaton published in 2000 that humans evolved on a diet of vegetation and animals? Both diets seem to have success in reversing cancer... Both plant based diets and keto diets (including fat from healthy animals) are low in protein and carbs.... lots to consider....

      Hey Noelle! I think you're right. And long story short: I put an correction over that part of the video @ 6:15 (Note: TH-cam doesn't allow us to replace videos otherwise I'd have rerecorded that part).
      I had this discussion down below in the comments a few months ago. Explaining that my choice for "less" came from occasional times with Campbell does hint at less, such as:
      * On page 305 of The China Study, T Colin Campbell writes, "There is nothing better the government could do that would prevent more pain and suffering in this country than telling American unequivocally to eat LESS animal products, LESS highly-refined plant products and MORE whole, plant-based foods."
      BUT, despite that, overall you make a good point. And so it's updated now. Hopefully that helps clear confusion! Thanks for your contribution.

      @castig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bryan! First off, great question....
      1) Regarding Steve Jobs, hypothetically speaking, a vegan diet isn't going to save you if you're stressed 99% of the time (which may have been one factor, but who knows what else contributed to his cancer). Also, according to Campbell it's not just being a "vegan" (no meat products) but rather that you eat a "Whole Food Plant-Based Diet" (no meat products, but a healthy amount of plant-based ingredients). If you eat vegan, but you only eat fruit (e.g. Steve Jobs considered himself a "Fruitarian" for many years) or if you only eat vegan cookies it's not going to be healthy.
      2) The videos about the China Study being biased? Many of those videos haven't read the China Study Book (and are only referring to The China Study Project that came out of Cornell). The book includes many studies that aren't just Campbell's, which is I think a more wholistic look at nutrition research.
      Is the CS "Project" biased? I'm not sure. It's an epidemiological study, and based on correlation. So by it's nature it doesn't PROVE a plant-based diet cures cancer (by any means). It's just shows that more research needs to be done. Campbell (in the book) shows his additional research, and backs it up with research by his peers. I think the place where it falls a little flat - is I'd like to see other people reproduce the studies. Dr. Michael Greger seems to have been aggregating a lot of solid research continuing to flesh out this theory - I'd highly recommend his book How Not to Die, and his website nutritionfacts.org
      In addition, Campbell's second book "Whole" is really nice in that it talks about the science behind The China Study and the about the nutrition space with a wider lens. Barely anyone ever mentions this book, but I found it well researched and his argument is solid.

      Dr McDougall has done an interesting video about Steve Jobs - concluding as I recall Jobs probably lived a lot longer than he otherwise might have by his having eaten a plant-based diet for as long as he did. It’s easily findable on You Tube.

    • @castig
      @castig  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying that the China Study says "minimize refined carbs" where as in the video I say "avoid starchy carbs?". I'm just clarifying to make sure I understand. I may have got that wrong - happy to look it up to verify, or if you already know then that'd be great. Maybe I can even update with a annotation if we know the minute in the video.

    • @michaelmedel2449
      @michaelmedel2449 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Castig 6:15 you list starchy carbohydrates. Potatoes, brown rice, whole grains, etc are starchy carbohydrates and The China Study does not ask us to avoid these foods at all. In fact the book recommends that we make these foods the base of our diet. Yes, minimize refined carbs like white flour, white rice and highly processed carbs. The most major food to avoid according to the CS is added oils of all kinds.

    Why should we avoid vitamin supplements?

    • @castig
      @castig  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Flavia! Good question. So according to The China Study (and most nutritionists, and doctors) general advice says not to take vitamins, and instead to get your nutrients from eating a variety of fruit and veggies.
      Reasons against vitamin supplements
      * There isn't much research that proves that they work (ie. provide the body with needed nutrients)
      * Everyone knows that "when you eat an orange you get Vitamin C", but what you don't know is that you also get dozens of other nutrients, some of which scientists haven't even been able to name. It's the dance, and mix of all of these micronutrients that cause our body to respond positively. When you buy a vitamin you're just getting the "vitamin C" pulled out of an orange (for example) and reduced to just 1 nutrient. And because of this you don't get all the magical chemical reactions that occur natural in the food. This is what scientists call "reductionism", it's the idea of reducing a complex series of nutrients, to 1 main nutrient, and assuming that you'll get the same result. The research shows that reductionist eating doesn't have the same positive effects as actually just eating the fruit to get your nutrients.
      * So why not just take vitamins to play it safe? There is evidence that suggests that putting vitamins in your body you actually add unwanted nutrients, or chemicals. One such is calcium, which makes up the pill capsule, and having too much calcium over time can lead to calcium build ups... and bad things.
      Those are the facts as I've learned them. Feel free to make your own mind up - and perhaps to use vitamins in moderation, if at all.
      Another book I love, called How Not to Die, gives a "daily dozen" checklist of where to get your nutrients from (instead of using vitamins). Here's an image except from the book of the list: i.imgur.com/o99tdL8.png
      And Dr. Greger (the author) has an app you can download as well: itunes.apple.com/us/app/dr.-gregers-daily-dozen/id1060700802?mt=8 ... if you're interested in learning more, his site is also wonderful: nutritionfacts.org

      Not even in winter for ex. when the quality & quantity of nutrients in fruits and veg are not so high or maybe in the case when someone suffers from malabsorption? Thank you for your responses :)

    • @castig
      @castig  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd say consult your doctor, and/or keep reading and learning. The only truth about nutrition (at the present date) is that we don't know everything. Doctors don't know it all. Scientists don't know it all. Vitamins themselves were only "discovered" less than 100 years ago (around the 1920s). www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/themes/medicine/carpenter/
      ...so at this point. I'd say the general rule of thumb: get your nutrients from ORGANIC WHOLE PLANTS whenever possible. And if it's winter, or some other edgecase, then you'll just have to use your best judgement. And also listen to your body whenever possible.
      Best of luck! Thanks for asking curious questions. They're fun to discuss and answer.

    I'm curious if Halal meat makes a difference??

    • @castig
      @castig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to the China Study (and the research sited in the book), as well as Dr. Greger's How Not to Die @nutritionfacts ....
      Yes, Halal is the same as regular meat for the most part. Now, industrialized meat (e.g. factory farm meat, the meat at Mc Donalds etc) may have worse things in it, because of the antibiotics, and stress under which the animal lived. And maybe Halal is better in this case? I don't actually know all the gritty details.
      But the general argument in The China Project (to which the first 100 pages of the book is on) is that casein in milk promotes cancer in the human body.
      And the general argument of the book The China Study (which looks at a 5+ doctor's and scientist's research) argues that ALL meat and milk promotes many diseases (such as cancer). And that it's the enzymes and quality of the meat itself (regardless of where it was farmed) has this result.
      Does that make sense? Hit me up with more questions and I"ll try to help explain!

    • @45.N.45

      I agree with castig, halal is 'cleaner' and might not have the +-450 drugs found in the regular fast food American meat but meat still contains cholesterol, fat, no fibre, and it's just not the best long term.

    • @castig
      @castig  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, and you're in part correct: What I've found is that there is overlap in the similarities between many of the common diets. Even paleo and vegan have similarities (e.g. plants are good in both diets, unprocessed foods are best in both diets, but paleo argues not to consume legumes and to consume more meat - there's more to it, but that's an overview). I wrote a whole deep dive: castig.org/debate-cordain-paleo-vs-campbell-the-china-study/
      So yes, Mediterranean does have some similarities, but it's not quite the same. The Mediterranean Diet includes oils, fish, and occasional meats.
      Whereas the Plant-Based Whole Foods Diet (aka. based off the China Study research) doesn't suggest you consume any of those.

    WRONG. Campbell doesn't say to eat "LESS" animal protein. Read his work! It says eat NO animal protein. This whole video is missing the point! Read the China study, not a ridiculous summary that misleads!

    • @castig
      @castig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey @gabriela. Are you angry? Why?
      I appreciate your watching the video, but I think we could have a better conversation here if we could avoid getting so emotional and discounting the entire video, or the entire book when just 1 thing might not be correct. Know what I mean?
      Here's my response...
      * On page 305 of The China Study, T Colin Campbell writes, "There is nothing better the government could do that would prevent more pain and suffering in this country than telling American unequivocally to eat LESS animal products, LESS highly-refined plant products and MORE whole, plant-based foods."
      * Later in Campbell's 2014 followup book "Whole" he writes, "The ideal human diet looks like this... AVOID heavily processed foods and animals products."
      * With that said, you are right that the China Study Project (the data that he references in the book) AND his own personal diet advocates for eating NO meat. I think I could have made that more clear in the video - but with the summary, I guess I tried to get the main points out.
      I'm sad to hear you think my summary is "ridiculous." My intention is not to replace reading the book, but that this could possibly get someone excited about reading the book, or for those who aren't going to read the book (340+ page) that this might be a starting place.
      Anyways! Happy to chat more. I'd love to help foster mutual understanding about The China Study.

    • @castig

      1) I really want to understand. Is my report "rubbish" because of the one line where I say "eat less meat" and you believe I should say "eat no meat"? If so, what if I put a pop up at that moment, and use a quote from the book. Just curious.
      2) Just because you put it out there, and for sake of credibility. Do you live in NYC? And is this you? Please confirm. www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielakaplanradiologist

      First of all, thank you for making this video. It is very informative. I would like to clear this up though. Is the book saying that it's better to eat zero animal protein or just not to have a lot of it?

    • @castig
      @castig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for the kind words.
      1) Yes, according to Dr. Campbell's research in The China Study, he advises you eat zero animal protein.
      2) He agrees that eating less animal protein is at least a step in the write direction. But he's advocating that you eat zero animal protein.
      That is the reading from the book.
      My suggestion (personally) is that each of us can get towards that goal in different ways. For some it may be going cold turkey, for others you may need to take baby steps. And in that regard, I don't think there is a "right or wrong" to how you execute. Every person is different, and I'd encourage you to read from multiple sources, and maybe even consult with a nutritionist (someone who understands this research in an educated manner). Best of luck!
