Guys like this are the OG expats in Japan. I have been studying Japanese and Japanese culture academically for over 20 years now and I see so many "influencers" and content creators that try to act like they are the only know-all of Japan. Many are VERY helpful, but a lot are very arrogant in the field of content and Japanese culture while guys like this have always been humble and were at the root of Japanese culture for an expat.

I didn’t realise that was Daniel Kahl till he started talking, but then I recognised his voice straightaway. Daniel (with a handful of other Japanese-speaking Americans) and his Yamagata-ben was a regular on Japanese TV in the 1990s. More of these kinds of interviews please!
First and foremost, a man who lived the very life he had dreamt up for himself. Other than that, Daniel's love for the language and culture is infectuous, and I will keep coming back to this video plenty in my lifetime. Words can't express how much I appreciate him sharing those very first learning steps, immersing in the language when virtually no immersion tools were available.

At the very end of the video when Daniel talked about how the streets are so clean and free of trash in all over Japan I swore that I would visit Japan one day. Anyway I wanted to visit Japan since 10 years or so, but Daniel really made we want to visit this country now.

So when he, a American, speaks natural yamagata dialect, ppl have been suprised especially back then in 90s cuz most of overseas came to Tokyo or city part of Japan and spaeks more received pronunciation or accent. Yamagata is a rural and remoted place and also famous for cherry.

I find people endlessly fascinating. Not all people, obviously but so very many of them. When people are mashed up by internet addiction they lose something really important, well they lose many important things and don't even know it. As a society so many things are normalised so the loss is not even acknowledged, let alone as a tragedy. This gentleman is the kind of person I'd love to have dinner with. This is one seriously interesting person. It would never happen, but if I were to make a ton of money, I would definitely seek out this gentlemen. I grew up on the West coast of the US, was involved in martial arts, was a military officer, courted Asian women, studied Japanese history, and I’m a huge fan of the culture. As someone who live in Japan ( been living herevin Tokyo for around 8 years), I would say yes the Japanese are quite emotional and they're not shy in showing it. However, they're VERY RARELY show it to a complete strangers.
This guy is amazing. I Lived in Japan from 1956 to 1959 and married a Japanese women but spent the remaining 50 Years of our marriage in California before she passed away. We made several trips to Japan and I studied Japanese language for two years. I Regret not returning to Japan to live. Again this guy is Amazing

What an interesting interview and fascinating storytelling. Just returned from 6 weeks in Iwate Prefecture: Hachimantai-shi, Morioka, Miyako-Taro, Sanriku coastline. Very different from southern and western Japan. Was also in Osaka, Kyoto on prior trip to Kuzumaki, Aomori and Hakadote. Japanese-American and Japanese family live in Iwate Prefecture. The entire country, though small, is never ending exploration. Thank you for sharing.

I came to Japan in 1982 as an Airman in the USAF, got married to a great Japanese women in 1985... we're still married, have 3 son's and 3 grandchildren and live in Tokyo. Now a days we spend a lot of time in Yamanashi, Hokuto-shi, to be more exact... we love the mountains along with the great fruits and vegetables grown there. I have a problem with the Sempai / Kohai thing myself. Even though a Sempai is clearly wrong often the Kohai just stand there an nod their heads. How can you fix problems when people will not speak up.
I believe what he says about Japanese people being Emotional..and good at hiding it..i was a Room Attendant for many years in the Tropics, i found they really appreciated little notes with smiley faces😊
I couldn't recognize him at the beginning, but when he talked about how he's been on TV, I immediately remembered when he was young. He aged well, and he resembled Santa Claus. I like his voice much better now than when he was younger. I am proud of having him in Japan. ダニエルさん、応援しています。😊

Thank you for this video. I love getting the opportunity to hear Americans speaking so fluently in Japanese, because that is encouraging for me. I've only been studying for less than two years, and I don't live in Japan, but it's always encouraging because it's like: "Yes! Americans CAN learn to speak Japanese! This guy did it, and so can I!"
風貌がすっかり変わられて、最初は誰か分からなかったのですが、「ダニエル」と言われて、ああそうかと思い出がよみがえりました。他の方も書かれていますが、当時山形弁を使いこなすアメリカ人として大人気でしたね。
ただ、人気の秘密は、ただ方言を話す外国人が面白いというのではなく、画面から伝わってくるダニエルさんの温かい人柄が皆を惹きつけていたのだと思います。

確かに40年前頃は先輩後輩文化が人間関係に強く影響していましたね。田舎は特に顕著かもしれない。しかし都市の人間関係においては今はそれほど先輩後輩関係が影響する事はない様に思います。長年において日本人と深く関わって暮らしてきたダニエルさんの話は本当に面白いです。

どこかで見たような方だと思って観てたら名前を聞いて「あ~」と思い出しました。山形弁で有名になった方ですが、実は関西弁も標準語もできる。ロシア語も話せる多言語話者なんですよね。長年日本のために情報発信されてくださっているのには頭が下がります。山形の庄内地方などを回って個人のお宅に泊まるような昔のほっこりとしたような番組でもう一度お見かけしたいものです。

I came to Japan in 1982 as an Airman in the USAF, got married to a great Japanese women in 1985... we're still married, have 3 son's and 3 grandchildren and live in Tokyo. Now a days we spend a lot of time in Yamanashi, Hokuto-shi, to be more exact... we love the mountains along with the great fruits and vegetables grown there. I have a problem with the Sempai / Kohai thing myself. Even though a Sempai is clearly wrong often the Kohai just stand there an nod their heads. How can you fix problems when people will not speak up.

I believe what he says about Japanese people being Emotional..and good at hiding it..i was a Room Attendant for many years in the Tropics, i found they really appreciated little notes with smiley faces😊

I couldn't recognize him at the beginning, but when he talked about how he's been on TV, I immediately remembered when he was young. He aged well, and he resembled Santa Claus. I like his voice much better now than when he was younger. I am proud of having him in Japan. ダニエルさん、応援しています。😊

Thank you for this video. I love getting the opportunity to hear Americans speaking so fluently in Japanese, because that is encouraging for me. I've only been studying for less than two years, and I don't live in Japan, but it's always encouraging because it's like: "Yes! Americans CAN learn to speak Japanese! This guy did it, and so can I!"
