I felt that this was a very sad death in DBZ. Really was unexpected. Good to see that he became the ultimate catalyst to reason with Gohan and help him release his emotions and tap into SSjin 2.

I'm quite curious about how strong 16's bomb would've been. Sure Cell does say "A mere bomb wouldn't have been enough to destroy me anyway" but up until Cell found out 16 didn't have it; he was absolutely terrified. No doubt Cell said what he did out of arrogance as there's no real way of telling just how powerful the bomb would be. I imagine 16's bomb blast would probably be quite focused (Like when Majin Vegeta sacrificed himself against buu)

I agree with the analysis. If Dr. Gero could create androids/cyborgs that could destroy the earth, surely he can make a concentrated bomb that could do the same. If a "blast of ki energy" that big (like the literal kamehameha stand-off) can happen then I do think this would be basically just like Vegeta's sacrifice. Especially since the bomb (or bombs as 17 and 18 had them too) was meant to kill Goku and Dr. Gero was supposed to actually be alive.
At worst he would come back like he did later.

Kira actually nobody truly died in the comic/animation world. That’s why I truly never understood the whole kill the heroes ploy. That makes characters with hyper sanity like The Joker and Deadpool extremely interesting considering they’re so aware of themselves that they’ve often mentioned themselves being comics in their own jokes.

Because 16 was the closest in comparison to Gohan in the Cell Saga....even more so than his father at this particular time due to Goku making some poor decisions. 16 loved life & gave Gohan the speech of the century. When 16 died it was as if apart of Gohan had died. "Just......let it goooooo......"

Dunno why people keep saying Bulma and her dad were stupid for this. I mean, did some people COMPLETELY forget that he said "That thing could blow up the whole planet"? Usually when someone in the series says that, they know full well on what their talking about. What's the point of relying on something that will kill you all anyway? That, and if Cell survived his "own" complete explosion, who's to say he wouldn't survive 16's? Everyone would die for nothing.
Though what they "were" stupid for was not telling 16 he had the bomb removed, unless they forgot. Common sense would tell them that an android like 16 would resort to his self-destruct function when desperation calls for it. If he knew the bomb wasn't in him anymore, he probably wouldn't have attempted this and would have still been alive...

Not really. All Gohan needed was to see one of his friends (or Goku) die, which the Cell Jrs. were very close to doing if 16 didn't intervene. He was already about to pop, and a death right in front of him was the only trigger he needed. It would have meant someone who was formerly alive to be dead, but it was set for Gohan to transform regardless of who died. I guess 16 was just the one who had to go down so none of the relevant(ish) characters had to suffer a death, as sad as that is.

true. and even though the whole idea seems like an afterthought (as well as akira toriyama giving names to 17 and 18-lapis and lazuli), I wish they'd brought Dr. Gero back with the dragonballs as a human. THen he wouldn't be strong enough to give anyone trouble and he could've worked to stop Cell and/or the situation with shutting them off. Presumably he'd die a second time either by the hands of cell himself or someone random, as he'd definitely be scheming even if in front of everyone. His time was too short lived even if his "death" showed how things were going and did have an impact and meant business.
Even though it was a filler saga I liked seeing him again talking about all humans changed like him and super android 17 ultimately killing him again.

The original dub really undersold the capabilities of that bomb. In the original English dub of DBZ, Bulma and Dr. Briefs stated _"It's built like a nuclear warhead."_ But in the Manga, Japanese audio version, and DBZ Kai (which is what this is), Bulma clearly states the bomb has the power to destroy the whole planet. Because it's clear Gero correctly deduced that, no matter how powerful Goku is, he cannot withstand an explosion powerful enough to destroy a planet.
Pretty sure Vegeta literally blew up a planet when his PL was only a few thousand. The truth is power levels are bullshit and so is planet busting. Toriyama is not very consistent in his worldbuilding.

Roshi and Piccolo still obliterated the moon and that was with a PL way lower than Vegeta's at the time.
Anything that can obliterate a moon can also decimate the surface of an earth-sized planet, like with the dinosaur extinction event.

What everybody seems to be forgetting is that the bomb 16 had implanted in his body may have been a "specialized antimatter bomb" specially designed to "destroy to the last molecule" possibly "feeding" on every last "body cell" to complete termination.
Such a bomb like that is designed to "make sure" any kind of "organic being" like Goku for instance would be disintegrated and "fully dissolved chemically".
If a bomb like that directly connected on Cell like 16's real intentions were it is within the realm of possibility that Cell could have been caught of guard "overestimating" his regeneration power out of his personal arrogance when in reality Cell is not "invincible" as he can be damaged and possibly defeated/destroyed.
16 already knows how powerful Cell has become up to this point so he took his best "calculated risk" to be at least "useful" to the Z fighters in this battle.
Y'all gotta give 16 his credit though. I really wish there was an "alternate scene" where 16 didn't have his bomb removed and he was able to successfully explode on Cell: I would like to know "what kind of bomb" it was that 16 would've used and how powerful and effective it would have been.
I want to believe 16's word when he says "Even you won't survive this one Cell": 16 seemed quite confident in his remarks so just makes me that more curious to see if Cell could've actually died from the bomb or not.
Anyways if Cell is legit not "faking being scared" in this scene that just adds to rapport that 16 might've been on to something. 16 knows Cell can regenerate, so when facing an opponent with regenerative healing powers you need power that can internally stop and sabotage any possible regeneration from recurring again. Perhaps 16 thought his bomb had such kind of capability?
It's unfortunate we'll never know given how things went down unless Mr. Toriyama reveals more information in the future about this...

It's still unfortunate to me that we never got to see a fight between Goku and 16 (BEFORE Goku went into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and got a year's worth of training). With it being his soul mission to destroy Goku, I just have a feeling that the fight would be an epic one, much similar to the one that Piccolo and 17 had.

I think Cell really underestimates his own creator. That bomb was intended to kamikaze Goku and kill him. And since Cell and Goku proved to be at least equal in their match, Cell would be in a lot of trouble if 16 did self-destruct. You could argue that Cell would've survived so long as a fragment of his biomass was not obliterated, but I like to think the reason he survived his own self-destruction was because Dr. Gero intentionally designed it that way. Where at least one cell wouldn't undergo self-destruction, not because the explosion wasn't powerful enough to completely kill him.
I think he was bluffing at the end to maintain the whole perfect appearance he was terrified before when 16 was getting ready to self destruct, he must have known how strong that thing was
