A shame too, cause he has some great dialogue with Lucien and some great quest-specific dialogue. Such as this quest and quite a few others, like the Companions.
Not sure if You heared about Relationship Dialogue Overhaul but if You install MCM addon fo it (require SkyUI) You can use calm via hotkey so everyone around You stop fighting for a while. It's the simplest solution for friendly fire.

Isn't auri essential? I'm pretty sure that it's like a standard for mod creators to make their followers essential.

That is why I am glad I play on PC so I can just disable and enable him and it stops the fight just like that.
That happens with me. I play PC so I use the stopcombat console command to end those annoying disputes.
