Huge french drain trench

Huge french drain trench - This infiltration trench is part of the storm water management system on this property. We used about 120 ton of #3 stone and 180 ft of 6" pipe. I dug the trench with my Kubota KX080

Awesome work. Can you explain how this works? Does water enter the stone from the house and then leave from the grate? Or does all the water drain to the grate and then filter out into the stone?
