  • Lots of folks had VCRs running on the night of the first game of the 1989 World Series. Consequently, we have lots of surviving tape from the immediate aftermath of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Here's something different, a complete ESPN SportsCenter from the night after the quake, October 18, 1989. Lots of interviews with players from the A's and Giants, as well as footage from MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent's famous candlelight news conference. It's a slice of history as well as a peek at ESPN in the days before it started dictating league alignments and schedules.

    The SF/Oakland area was soooooo lucky that the world series was happening between Oakland and SF because if the quake happened and both the As and Giants weren't in the world series, more people would be on the Bay Bridge and Cypruss Structure and hence more deaths because folks would not be home for the game like they were.

    Imagine that! There actually was a time when a sporting event wasn't considered more important than rescue efforts

    Actually, the death toll turned to be a mere 67, but it was no less tragic.

      That's the downside of having to pull the information from a number of different sources when something like this happens. Wires get crossed, people who normally have reliable information don't, and there were undoubtedly duplicates in the list.

    Today was the *30* year anniversary of when this episode aired on ESPN.
    EDIT- 10/19/19 (12:24 A.M.: finishes video 1 hour and 4 minutes later)
    They were *way* off on the death toll. Only 63 people died as a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

      The first cell phone I saw was one that my dad borrowed while wating in the parking lot at candlestick - following the earthquake. The same guy who had the cell phone, also had a portable television with rabbit ears tuned to live news footage of the bay bridge collapse - after finally leaving the parking lot that night, we drove across a bridge.to Oakland.

    I'm actually not a sports enthusiast, so I don't stay up on what's going on. However I just learned that Candlestick Park was completely demolished a few years ago. I'm really shocked by that because it did in fact survive the quake of 89 quite well.

    • @almostfm
      @almostfm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry this is so late, but it's pretty clear that you don't understand what happens when there's a disaster or other big news story:
      Normally reliable and authoritative sources of information get stuff wrong right at the outset and there simply isn't time to confirm with a couple of independent sources.
      Also, it's really easy to get duplicates from different sources: The PD reports 50 dead, the FD reports 50 dead, but 25 people are in both groups. Unless and until you have time to cross-reference everybody on every list, it's possible to have duplicates that you can't catch.

      Think they just estimated because of the number of cars crushed when 880 collapsed (think something like 200 cars were crushed so someone just pulled a number out of the air and it snowballed).
