1967 VW Bus Super Charger Install

- This is a pretty long video about my experience installing a supercharger kit onto my 1967 Volkswagen Transporter. I am a professional athlete, but cars have always been one of my passions. I wanted to give my Bus more power, and in looking at options, from installing duel Webers to buying a turn-key engine online, I stumbled upon Kompressor Haus in the UK. This seemed interesting, and sounded like something that could potentially tackle myself. So I purchased their "Ultimate Supercharger Kit." This is by no means a "professional how-to" video, but shows in detail the steps required for an enthusiast to attack a "do it yourself" installation of the Kompressor Haus Ultimate Supercharger Kit and my encounters along the way.

Nice little unit mate, didn't know you had a vw bus :) Get your self a blazecut fire unit for the engine bay, cheap insurance in case of a fire.
Great Video, love your commitment 👍🏼
When I saw the video I was like WTF, Robby Naish gone DIY You tube Mechanic, Looking forward to your Plumbing and Carpeting Videos 👍🏼😃
great looking car - that deep blue and white brings it to life! my knuckles would have all been busted/scraped by day 2 :O but a treat to watch the vid; the maui breeze at a peaceful location is heaven on earth IMO. reminds me of when my fam had lunch behind Lindbergh/church area during our visit :)
Great to see you finally having the time to work on your cars, I know you have wanted to for a long time now. Still remember you telling me in the Gorge how much fun you had cleaning up and detailing your Uncle's 240Z when you were younger. When you do pull the carb to get more clearance, put in a drip pan between the carb and the alternator. Webers have a habit of weeping after they flood and the fuel will go straight onto the alternator and light up! My Lotus Esprit has this same problem and I know of a few that have burnt to the ground. Cheers, Kean
Servus from Southern Bavaria! Never thought I´d watch you upgrading a Bulli..., thx for sharing, cheers. Btw.: you´re definitely not bad at working on the stuff - I know people just giving up half the way down. Hope it´s not a bird killer now....
Wow robby naish I absolutely idolised you back in my windsurfing days you taught me to waterstart! And now here you are inspiring me to supercharge my bus!
That was fun to watch. I really need to climb into the engine bay of my '55 Bel Air and get her back on the road.
Nice one buddy would love to see a video of all you collection of car and all you toys 👍
Nice work. That classic ‘67 VW bus becomes a daily driver again. Enjoy the ride Robby !❤
Cool work Robby. Tight clearances! A bit of safety advice, although I know how nice it is to be able to see fuel flowing on these older vehicles when troubleshooting, you should replace that clear plastic fuel filter with a metal one. The plastic one can break at the nipples after heat cycles and vibrations in the engine bay....
Thank you Lionel! I appreciate the insight... I am aware of this, but wanted to see how much gunk was in the old fuel initially, but plan on changing that out to a metal one soon.
R.N. Loved your video, and your trials and tribulations of installation.. I have been looking at these kits for some time now.. Everyone knows what a turbo will do and i wanted to try something different, and your video really grabbed my attention.. R if there isnt a problem, would you mind sharing the cost of the deluxe kit.. Thank you for sharing your time and info in this video.. Take care and God Bless...
your the goat, even in VDub repair, I have a cool 64 bug, Kailua Boys 4ever
Great to see you enjoying some of your other interests. I too love Windsurfing and Cars so many thanks for sharing 🤙
Excellent video Robby . Next time take the engine out , it's about 15 minutes work and it makes working on the engine soooo much easier . I spent an hour messing with the generator and fan then I decided the engine needed to come out , I couldn't believe how easy it was and how easy working on the engine on the floor was .
He said in the video that he should have
Hello Robby,...a beautiful old VW bus and I can well understand your enthusiasm. I had a high-roof bus from the German post office (built around 1973) converted into a camper van in dark blue at the beginning of the 1980s. (1600cc/50ps) I often used it with my friend at weekends in Renesse,....du can imagine why.
I had large "PatLove" sail stickers on both cab doors. It was a great time, even though we always had to go to the campsites in the evening.
Greetings and have fun with the bus!🤣😉
Great job in a tight space Robby , been looking at these kits in the UK recently , good point about that throttle cable angle , could see you were genuinely impressed with the extra grunt 💪, Enjoy ! 👍
I did not imagine such hard work also the location is not the most comfortable, nice work boss! I want to try it one day 😁
Great job Robby!
Nice set!.. tooltip..get yourself a quickjack it makes things easier.
For safety reasons I personally never install fuel filter and pump inside the engine bay.. but thats just me.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing Robby!!, it's winter in Argentina, Cordoba, a mediterranean province with beautiful lakes, the weather when it normally blows, but it's been a couple of weeks since we've been in the water and it's quite cold, so I'm also in the home workshop doing maintenance on my motorcycle and I played your video for company, listening and looking out of the corner of my eye, very interesting work, congratulations and enjoy the ride!!!
Fuel pump & filter should not be in the engine compartment. They make a fire extinguisher TUBE that's about 6' long you can tie it up above the motor. Highly recommended. I've had 2 bus fires and other close calls. Both were saved thankfully. Love the color Nice Bus! I used to be all about stock. now stock is cheap crap so bigger is better and way funner. Our 66 bus is now IRS, ball joint, & 4 wheel disc. 1649 with weber progressive. Currently building a 1904. Not me the shop. Another bit of advice is do not get cheap parts. Quality is everything. When I ran them stock in the 80's & 90's I would get about 60,000 on a motor. not bad when a rebuild was only $350. Now $3500 but who drives them daily anymore. I'll be shocked if we put another 60,000 on the old bus. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for all the information and for sharing your experience.
I watched the whole thing out of respect for the King 🤙🏻
I am sure that was painful, but thank you... I appreciate it!
@@RobbyNaishUS1111 you’re very welcome sire 😇💙🤙🏻
Great video everything I needed to know I have a 1600 dual port rail I'm wanting to install a supercharger next ❤
Came over from your IG and subbed!
We are waiting for you at Leucate 😉🤙 during the "Tramontane"
Good job and great vid! Thank you.
Love v dubs gonna get that kit for mine just live down the road from Nottingham love my naish wing foil board ultra carbon 110 ltr but I would love that cadburys boost😍🤙 all the best Lannaye uk
Nice. Been thrashing on a 72' Wagoneer with a Cummins 6A Swap. Pretty fun. Road 3.2 at the Gorge yesterday for the first time ever. Starting to hit some chop hops too. Thanks for the inspiration!
sounds like a classic ride...maybe even with the fake wood paneling on the sides? good for carrying wind toys too!
@@RobbyNaishUS1111 Yup. I'll post some Wagon stuff soon. I got started windsurfing 2 years ago at age 36. It's been life changing. I'm cleaning guys garages out for dimes on the dollar. Three quivers. 8 boards. Even found an old Naish Supercross 264 that I love. It's an incredible time to get into windsurfing. Everyone is super stoked and encouraging. Hope to see ya on the beach someday.
Your absolutely right when you work on cars. But there's no better feeling than driving something that you've worked on or fixed yourself. I've been a big fan of your windsurfing career, and we own a Naish custom board that we picked up while we we in Hatteras.
Peace
Great work, Robby! Appreciate the documenting and upload of this project. It's amazing some of the tolerances on some of these things (even down to a couple mm, if that!). Genuinely curious about any similar projects; be it board repairs, rig tuning, or whatever might be going on. Thanks!
Very nice bus, I love that blue!!! It looks GREAT
En plus d'être un grand champion, tu est un bon mécanicien ✌👍👏💪
Dude
pushin' 70 and still hitting the swell at Jaws...
not you the bus.
In either case
caps off👣
"hopefully leak proof..."🤨

Given a fire extinguisher...
I'd be stoked
to feel the power differential
compared to stock.
No longer putting
over Highway 9
to get to Santa Cruz (?)
or up Highway 1 to Wadell Creek
would be quite a different experience. (?)
🤙
Wow! I really enjoyed this video.
I bilt a 2332 and have been pondering this, and as expected, I've been watching plenty of supercharger installations. One individual used a spacer between the supercharger and carburetor intake which avoided the alternator problem. That's a pretty nice van you have there
That supercharger is not big enough for a 2332. It is barely big enough for a 1600. You would have to overdrive it at least 2.5 engine speed, maybe 3.5 engine speed to make boost on an engine that big. The compressor only displaces 500cc per revolution.
Can you tell me which kit of jets did you use for the carb? Main jet, idle jet etc...? thanks
Oh Robby! Ive get chickenskin about your bus! How sick is that for me 🎊 🎉. I like it so much
U a legend Robby, i wanted to know where u live it seems so nice
Easy doing comparing to super duper models they say we have to buy, 😊
Hello, I'm going to do the same Conversion for Ado here in the Netherlands. He has a VW bus too, and now he's seen yours he's asked me to do it.
Love that you shared the problems, nothing on a bus is as simple as IKEA. Can you fit a 123 Ignition Distributor with this kit?
Braddah! Do you got a stock exhaust or a performance exhaust?
How cool, great job! Also not killing the Nene on the way out the driveway. Did you keep the Audi Quattro you once had? I rode in it with Uli Stanciu in like ´84 before you got it.
Unfortunately I sold the Quattro about thirty years ago....
Uli Stanciu from the German Surf Magazin. " Das waren Zeiten" ! Cool you met him and drove Robby's Quattro!
Super...
Gratulation
Grüsse aus München
How’s the supercharger doing??
I’m looking to get one for my bus also….Mahaloz for this video🤙🏽🤙🏽
Don’t you think the amp cable is not close to the carburettor? I fear the cable would melt…. Amazing craftsmanship!!
It is close, but has a rubber boot and a hard plastic shim between them as well. I do not think there is too much heat there...
@@RobbyNaishUS1111 okay…as long you it have under the radar :-) I am not an expert …just knowing that very high temperatures can occur and that the plastic might melt because of that. In the videos it seems nearly touching it so close it looks
iOS it ok to share this to my amr500 group ? I think it will be very helpful
Absolutely 🤙
Hi there. May i ask what size jets did you end up using in the end?
After installing, did your oil temp or cylinder temps go up?
What happens if the 60amp alternator grounds out on the carburetor 2mm above it? 😳
That would not be at all good. There is a rubber boot over the amp positive terminal, with no threads sticking out on top (cut down to the nut). I also put a hard plastic shim between the alternator and the carburator just in case. They are not touching, but it is close. Now that it is finished, I will likely pull off the carb and compressor and bang out a bit more room on top of the engine bay, letting me angle in just a tad more clearance between the carb and alternator. In the whole scope of things, this will not take too much time or be too much trouble. There is also a bit of idle "rattle" with the top of the two units coming in contact with the ingine bay top that I would love to eliminate. Thank you for your concern!
Ich will auch ! 😜 👍

Well, thats a quite different video😂❤
Dude! Just electrify it! But she is gorgeous.
I thought about it. But this one I had to keep at least close to original...
@@RobbyNaishUS1111 fair call. You probably don't rack up the miles on her too much.
Could you be any cooler Robby????🫶🫶
Cool vid. Mahalo
Hi there. Could you please tell me where do you get the complete kit? Thanks
kompressorhaus.com
buy a blue Dist. cap
When I see our Robby, I guess I wasted a bit of my life indeed..
The fast VW have Subaru motors dropped in them.
Yes, some do for sure. I looked at doing an STI swap,,,, but decided it needed to stay VW powered. And I can at least kind of work my way around an air cooled motor like this myself... likely not the case with a water cooled, computerized, turbo flat four.
@@RobbyNaishUS1111 I had v dub van that same color in Florida , I sold it before I came out here. It was the windsurfing road trip to the keys and west coast Machine. Lots of good times.🤙
